there's nothing quite as haunting as an abandoned location a place that was once full of life but now stands in silence once upon a time these places were packed with people going about their lives but they've been left empty as the rest of the world has moved on now their time capsules that remind us of a bygone age and they are fascinating to look at here are some truly compelling examples the largest abandoned subway system in the United States of America is below Cincinnati's streets in Ohio don't feel bad if you've never heard about it though most of the local residents haven't either back in the early 1900s when construction work began on the project it was supposed to become a replacement for the city's streetcar system but it was doomed almost from the start by rapidly rising costs and relentless political disagreements only two miles of tunnels and tracks had been completed by the 1920s and the arrival of the Great Depression was the final nail in the coffin for the project work was officially postponed in 1928 and although it was never officially cancelled it's obvious that nobody's going to come back and finish at almost 100 years later initially the whole system was supposed to cost no more than six million dollars but enormous inflation in the aftermath of the First World War coupled with a shortage of building materials pushed the estimate more than three times higher and the cost became unacceptable these days the tunnels are full of optical fiber cables along with a relocated water main [Music] Rocky Point Amusement Park in Rhode Island USA has just entered its fourth decade of abandonment and dereliction for over a century before that though it was a popular tourist destination for families the park was the brainchild of Captain William Winslow who bought the land in 1847 and used it to offer a few basic amusements and a restaurant by the 1950s it was Rhode Island's most popular attraction and featured white-knuckle rides like a corkscrew loop roller coaster and a 13-story freefall attraction that allowed riders to take a plunge at almost 60 miles per hour the restaurant had grown in size to the point where it could seat up to 4,000 diners at the same time and was known miles around for its New England clam chowder there was even a palladium ballroom at the site in later years which hosted concerts by huge acts like Thin Lizzy The Ramones Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam money started to become tight as the parks attractions became dated by 1990 standards with bankruptcy declared in 1994 most of the features at the site have since been demolished to make way for Rocky Point State Park although some skeletons of the rides of the past still remain an abandoned theme park is quite a thing to behold but perhaps a whole abandoned town is even more impressive this is the ghost town of Sewell in Chile a former mining town in the Andes known as the city of stares on account of the fact that it has no roads Sewell was built on top of a huge deposit of copper in 1905 and houst miners and their families until the deposit ran dry during the 1970s leading to its abandonment under normal circumstances a settlement left alone for this long would show signs of extreme deterioration but the freezing conditions in this remote part of the world have preserved Sewell almost perfectly it's over 7,000 feet above sea level built on a slope so steep that wheeled vehicles have no chance of getting up or down it to get around that problem the town's planners built escalera central an enormous staircase that runs from the railway station all the way to the uppermost reaches there were plazas a movie theater and a social club alcohol was officially banned but the miners always found a way of bringing it in from elsewhere if you took a trip to Kerry in the Republic of Ireland you'd find an ancient monastery that looks so perfect and scenic that you'd swear it was designed to be part of a movie set but it's a genuine article it's called skellig michael and it's hidden away on an irish island with an impeccable view out across the atlantic ocean the monastery which shares its name with the island was built close to the top of 700 foot high rocky mountain during the seventh century this would have been a place of solitude where a handful of monks tended to a vegetable garden between their humble cluster of stone huts their peace was shattered during the ninth century when the island was invaded by marauding Vikings but they clung on until the 12th century when they moved back to the mainland in search of a little more company the island and its monastery have been lifeless ever since there's been a recent exception to that abandonment though the ruins of the monastery were used as luke skywalker's hiding place for the movie star wars the last Jedi [Music] whether or not you believe that climate change is caused by humans you at least have to agree that it's happening and in some places in the world it has a measurable and negative impact one such place is hotel belvedere in the Swiss Alps which used to be a picture-perfect vacation destination but was ruined by a shift in temperature back in the nineteenth century this was a popular stop on the Furka pass road offering a panoramic view across a nearby glacier the glacier was only six hundred feet from the hotel's front door and there was even a grotto carved into the glacier from the hotel allowing visitors to see the huge block of ice from the inside during the past century though the Rhone glacier has retreated by over a mile the grotto has disappeared and with one hundred and thirty feet of ice lost each year the hotel gets a little farther away from the glacier every passing day former James Bond actor Sean Connery once counted Hotel Belvedere as one of his favorite places to stay and even pope john xxiii once stayed here but now the windows are boarded up and there's nobody here at all there's a secret mountain airbase in Albania that might have exactly what you're looking for if you're in the market for a retired military plane you'll find Tjader airbase carved into the foot of a mountain and inside is a collection of mick jets dating back to the country's Communist era gathering dust the collection includes units of the mig-19 the mig-17 and the mig-21 Tjader was created because of the paranoia of former leader Enver Xhosa who spent his whole reign in fear of an attack from foreign forces and demanded that military installations like this one should be built to defend against such an attack the attack never came and most of the military equipment was never used communism in Albania ended in 1990 and although the base remained in use for a further 10 years it's now been shuttered for two decades the planes have officially been listed as for sale since 2016 but they're antiquated models and probably only have value a scrap a more recent proposal to reopen the base as a museum might prove to be a better use for both the planes and the forgotten base that they call home you've heard of the Hadron Collider but have you ever heard of the superconducting super collider probably not because it was abandoned due to its enormous cost before anything useful could be done with it they say that everything is bigger in Texas but continuing to pump money into this scientific project and wasa hachi was too big and ask even for Tex and appetites the super collider also known as the desert tron would have been even more powerful than the Large Hadron Collider but it was abandoned in a semi complete state after ten years of construction work went way over budget by the time it was called off fourteen miles of tunnels had been dug and eleven billion dollars had been spent when the order to shut down was given all of the valuable equipment inside the tunnels was removed and the cavernous holes were filled with water to preserve them since then there have been numerous proposals aimed at finding a use for the site ranging from a mushroom farm to an enormous data storage facility for Google a chemical company bought the land more recently so it may find a vaguely scientific use after all our next abandoned location should look very familiar to you if you're a fan of the Hunger Games unfortunately the filming of that movie is pretty much the only life this abandoned village in Hildebrand North Carolina has seen in living memory the Henry River Mill Village was founded in 1905 as a gold panning town and quickly attracted scores of prospectors who moved to the area to seek their fortune what started as a single building quickly became a whole network of buildings stores and of course the mill which spent the next 50 years spinning some of the finest yarn to be found anywhere in the United States of America yarn isn't as useful today as it was in the early 20th century though and even by the early 1970s there weren't many buyers left for the product the mill shut down in 1973 and a few residents who hadn't already moved away by then pack their bags and went to seek prosperity elsewhere all 20 of the buildings that are still standing today belong to 83 year old Wade Shepherd who's willing to sell them on to you for around one and a half million dollars if you're interested where do you think the first-ever stock exchange building in the world was built New York perhaps Shanghai London wrong in all three cases it's actually handles boyars in Antwerp Belgium given its historically significant status you'd like to think it would be preserved as a museum but sadly it hasn't been it's a sad and yet somehow glorious ruin there's been a stock exchange here since 1531 although it didn't look like this the first building burned down in 1858 and this is the replacement that was built on the same ground in 1871 and continued trading until 1997 it's thought that the stock exchange building in London took inspiration from this fading icon Antwerp is still a thriving city today but in the early 16th century it was the epicenter for commerce and trade in all of Europe times have changed since then and this beautiful building is almost a metaphor for that fall from grace panes of glass are missing from the ornate windows the tiles are cracked and broken even now it could perhaps be rescued it was still used as a concert venue until 2003 after which it was completely closed down because of health and safety concerns when we think about witchcraft in America we usually think about Salem in Massachusetts but there are also spooky tales about Portland OR again that's where you'll find the stone ruin that's become known to locals as the witch's castle the connection to witchcraft is probably a more recent invention though the true origin of this mysterious old building is unknown it's built on land that was once owned by a convicted murderer Danford Bouch who is executed in 1859 and some stories claim that he hid from the law here before his arrest that's also unlikely to be true though most evidence points to the building being erected no earlier than 1930 the most likely story is also the most plausible that it was a restroom for hikers provided by Portland Parks and Recreation the obvious damage to the structure was caused in a storm in 1962 and it's been abandoned ever since over the years it's developed a thick coating of moss and murals implying that witches exist in the area started to appear during the 1980s unless of course the witches were always there and it's the story about Portland Parks and Recreation that's a fabrication if you ever find yourself driving down the i-4 between Orlando and Tampa and Florida USA and you think you see a series of chrome trailers wedged into the ground in an open field your eyes aren't deceiving you that's Airstream Ranch and it's exactly what it looks like opinion on whether it's a brilliant work of modern art or an eyesore varies dramatically in the surrounding area of Seffner but the series of half-buried trailers was implanted into the ground by Frank Bates in 2008 Frank owns an RV dealership nearby and wanted to create something special to mark the 75th anniversary of his company it's a loose replica of the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo Texas there are eight silver trailers in the field and at one point hundreds of tourists used to stop off and take pictures of the unusual site unfortunately Frank didn't perform any maintenance work on the trailers after he buried them they quickly went from shiny silver to a battered off gray and the local authorities ordered him to tear them down this wasn't a battle Frank was prepared to lose though he's managed to navigate around the problem by creating an Airstream museum on the site instead all is not what it seems at top Rome the ancient temple hiding in the jungle of krong Siem Reap in Cambodia it looks like it's been left to rot for such a long time that trees have started to grow through the stones but this is actually a state of managed decline the temple was genuinely abandoned for centuries but after it was rediscovered in more recent times the leaves and vines are trimmed back to allow visitors to view the stonework better it's believed that the construction of the temple which was made in the Buddhist tradition was ordered by king jaya varman the seventh in 1186 as a tribute he had a stone effigy of the face of his recently deceased mother carved into one of the walls that isn't the most famous of the temples carvings though find the most distant corner of the temple and there you'll see an etching of a creature that looks very much like a dinosaur there's a big problem with that we didn't discover evidence of dinosaurs until 1824 and nobody around in the 12th century should have had any idea what one might look like how can this dinosaur be here it's a riddle that doesn't have an answer subscribe to the channel and turn
