it isn't always the case that every amazing discovery made by an archaeologist or historian involves digging into the ground to look for it but that's the way it happens more often than not there are wonders old and new in the land beneath our feet and many of us don't even know they're there you don't have to be an archaeologist to go looking for buried treasure though you can stay right where you are and allow us to bring it to you in this video instead what better way to start out than the discovery of a whole enormous ocean sitting right underneath the oceans that we already know about it sounds like something from science fiction but that's exactly what stephen jacobson from northwestern university in illinois usa found in 2014 using seismometers jacobson and his colleagues fired seismic waves through the earth's crust to discover what lay beneath it tracking changes in speed and using them to determine the material the waves were passing through as the waves reached the ringwoodite layer which is mostly made up of blue rock the waves slowed down to the same speed we'd expect to see if they were passing through water after further study jacobson's team determined that there's a massive ocean up to three times larger than any body of water on the planet's surface somewhere close to the earth's core it might even be the case that the waters of the oceans on the surface somehow escaped from this much larger one like a watery version of inception unfortunately digging down into the ground to prove the theory is impossible according to jacobson's calculations the ocean is over 400 miles beneath the mantle discovering tombs is usually the work of dedicated archaeologists but sometimes it's an occupational hazard for construction workers that was the case in 2011 when road workers in tisao stumbled upon an ancient chinese mummy entombed below the surface for more than seven centuries it turns out that the wet conditions beneath the road were perfect for preserving the remains of the woman buried in the tomb when she was brought to the surface and dried out a little the excellent condition of her clothing amazed even the most experienced experts such as the quality of her state of preservation that her eyebrows are still clearly visible along with a hint of her facial features the coffin was full of brown liquid that couldn't be identified so it's unknown whether it was added as a preservative when she was buried or seeped in over time as well as the mummified remains of the woman the workers also found beautiful jewelry and a collection of manuscripts but unfortunately the papers were too badly damaged to be read or rescued you generally don't expect to find the remains of an ancient roman fleet of ships at the bottom of a coal basin but that was the site awaiting a team of serbian archaeologists in march this year the discovery was made around nine miles from the town of pazovarik in the remains of what was once the roman city of vimnachi around 2400 years ago this was the capital of the roman province of lower malesia a variety of boats of several shapes and sizes were discovered at the bottom of a coal seam and narrowly avoided being destroyed by the enormous coal excavator machines that dominate the landscape as exciting as it is the discovery of the ships is mysterious in theory it shouldn't be possible for them to have sunk to this depth as the rock around them is 7 000 years old it's also unclear which river the boats would have been anchored in the basin of the danube is a long way away and neither the dried up river kapechka or the dried up stream malava are viable candidates it's almost as if someone buried the ships here as a joke to confuse scientists [Music] military planes tend to end life one of two ways they either get destroyed or get taken apart and scrapped to build something new possibly even a new fighter plane that doesn't apply to the aircraft that british artist roger hyorn's got his hands on though the conceptual artist prefers to bury them deep underground he buried his first mig-21 fighter plane in east anglia in 2017 and followed up by burying another one in dhoni brezene near prague later the same year the prague plane burial was part of a celebration to mark 100 exhibitions for the city's rudolphinum art gallery but that isn't hyorn's motivation to him buying mig-21 planes is a way of marking the end of what he sees as an era of development that mig planes represent he's been asked several times why he prefers the soviet aeroplanes to anything made by the british during the same era and he says that he simply finds them more attractive his work isn't always well received by cold war enthusiasts though who believe that burying the planes is a way of vandalizing history we already said that the things you find underground don't have to be old in order to be impressive if we ignored anything new we'd be denying ourselves the wonder and beauty of raw paulette's hand-carved caves in la madeira new mexico as impossible as it seems these gorgeous caves are exactly as they're described every inch of every single one of them was carved out by hand by american artist rob paulette who spent more than 30 years going about his work in the wilderness he's getting a little too old to carry on now but his legacy will be the 14 different intricately patterned caves he's already created into the desert outside santa fe occasionally he worked by digging further into a crevasse that already existed but more often than not he would simply tunnel straight into the sandstone cliffs and make something from nothing occasionally he built plinths for candles and rocky sets of furniture inside the deepest reaches of his self-made caverns raw has never attempted to make any money out of his caves he allows the public to access them freely and all he asks is that they keep them clean [Music] the city of orvieto in italy is a pleasant place to visit but you might be more interested in what's underneath it than what exists on the surface that's because oviedo was built on top of a series of 2500 year old tunnels that run on for miles and might even have once connected several european nations together below ground of all of the discoveries that have been made down there though it's the pyramidal hypogeum that's prompted the most curiosity it appears that the ancient astrusians built the structure during the 5th century bce but its function and purpose remain unknown further investigations underneath nearby umbria have also revealed the presence of underground pyramids built at around the same time the walls of the structures are elaborately decorated which rules out the idea of them being quarries or cisterns but saying what they are not is a lot easier than saying what they are historians and experts don't have the answer to that question yet while we may not fully understand what we're looking at here we can at least appreciate its beauty the financial district of san francisco is an opulent place where business people go looking for metaphorical gold but 150 years ago their gold aspirations were more literal back then the area was a port and it played host to over a thousand ships that had brought people to the city as part of the gold rush the ships were in poor condition when they arrived and quickly became abandoned breaking down in the harbor and eventually blocking it up completely rather than attempting to free up the port the city decided to fill it in instead that resulted in the burial of an entire fleet of wooden ships many of which are still there under the feet of san francisco residents occasionally one of them will be rediscovered unexpectedly like the sailing ship candace from the 1830s that appeared under spear and folsom during renovation work in 2005. if you ever visit the city's old ship saloon bar you'll discover it's genuinely part of an old ship known as the arkansas much of which is buried below the bar nobody knows quite how many ships are still trapped down there but it's likely that there are at least 50. if you know a thing or two about ancient gods you may have heard of janus the two-faced god if you have you'll probably be aware that janus is an ancient roman god not an ancient norse god that makes the discovery of this three thousand-year-old figurine in kalistrup denmark in early 2020 somewhat mysterious is this a depiction of a previously unknown two-faced norse god or is it evidence that janus was also worshiped in denmark three thousand years ago whatever the answer to that question is it appears to change history if this is a tribute to a god we didn't know about before it might help us to shed light on yet another mystery the figure is depicted as wearing a horned helmet which as we know despite years of hollywood trying to tell us otherwise vikings didn't do the only horned helmets that have ever been found on scandinavian land are the bronze age vixo helmets which remain unexplained could whoever created or owned those helmets have worshipped this figure as a god or was this a secretive sect that existed within viking society but played no part in it you'll have heard of the famous sphinx in egypt even if you know little about history and if you've never visited the country you'll also know that it's a singular object seemingly put in place to guard the great pyramid based on a discovery made in 2018 that might not actually be the case that's because a sculpture described as a second sphinx was found underground during road work in august that year it isn't especially clear from the images that the workman took but the sculpture is being described as a large creature with a lion's body in the head of a human that sounds familiar the existing sphinx that we're already aware of is around 4 500 years old so it's possible that this companion comes from the same time more work will have to be done before anything else can be said about this remarkable discovery with certainty it's still half buried and excavating it will be a slow and delicate process this might be a discovery we come back to in the future you might have to suspend your disbelief for a moment to listen to the tale of this next underground discovery but bear with us to you these pictures might look like images of a humble hole in the ground in rioja spain to an increasingly large number of believers it's an access point to an underground base of some kind some people say it's owned by the military whereas others go the whole way of saying that it's used by aliens we can't prove those claims either way but we can say that there have been numerous independent reports of strange objects being seen in the sky around the hole and lights appearing to enter and exit from the alleged entrance hole when it gets dark in still pictures the lights appear as mysterious orbs it's said that the shaft extends several miles into the ground and can't be climbed into because it's a sheer drop with nothing for human hands to grab onto there could be something top secret going on down there or alternatively maybe it's just a hole what do you make of the appearance of these strange underground structures in brazil which we see being excavated by professor louis forgi and his team are they the remains of a lost underground civilization could they be the burial chambers of a forgotten pre-columbian south american people actually no despite their labyrinthian properties and the fact that they cover a area larger than the great wall of china everything you see here was made by an enormous colony of ants back when the insects still lived here they would have been a community of millions living in a complicated structure that seems to have clearly defined roads tunnels compartments and food stores this isn't an ant hill it's a hole and city just as mysterious as their existence is their abandonment the leaf-cutting ants that once lived here disappeared quickly and without apparent reason there are no clues for their vanishing inside their former home it's estimated that 40 tons of soil was displaced during the creation of the colony a construction project of almost inconceivable proportions for something as small as an ant it's almost as if they have a hive mind [Music] because of the buzz generated by the popularity of dan brown's novels we tend to be a little wary of any discovery that claims to be connected to the knights templar genuine knights templar discoveries are made occasionally though and here's an example of one that turned up underground in israel in 2019 a team of archaeologists working in the city of acre unearthed a set of hidden tunnels if they're right about what they found these are the very same tunnels that were used during the 11th and 12th centuries to move gold around during the crusades legend has it that the secret of the gold's final location disappeared with the knights templar during the 14th century and it may still be underground somewhere it might even be underground in acre the presence of the tunnels and the central hub that appears to connect them has only been detected on scanning technology nobody's been down there to check on them in person when they eventually do they might find golden treasures beyond imagination that's a better ending to the tale than any dan brown story subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you will be the first to know when a new video comes out thank you for watching and see you in the next video
