there are a couple of clues in the word artifacts that explain why many people are so fascinated by them many of them are arty and they often come with interesting facts attached to them whether discovered by an amateur sleuth an archaeologist a paleontologist or by accident by a random member of the public every single one of the artifacts you're about to see in this video comes with a story make yourself comfortable and we'll tell you all about them we're all familiar with the story of the nativity many of us took part in nativity plays every christmas when we were in school because of that we know what the traditional nativity scene is supposed to look like that's what makes this ancient token stone discovered in israel in 2020 so unusual it depicts the nativity but there's no sign of mary or joseph the artifact is known as a eulogia token objects like these were carried around by early christians as they went on pilgrimages in the holy land this one was found in the remains of the 4th century church of the nativity in bethlehem it might look like a small coin but it's actually made of compressed earth meaning it's extremely delicate visible in the image on its surface are the infant christ between two stone pillars along with the ox and the ass the omission of christ's parents is a surprising one archaeologists think it might be a depiction of a vision had by a pilgrim while visiting the church although that begs the question of why they leave it behind after taking the trouble to make it during early 2021 archaeologists in india have been digging out an old well close to a ruined temple in pudupi india the researchers carried out the work on the assumption that there might be ancient votive offerings at the bottom of the well and they were right this beautiful statuette is so well preserved that it's hard to believe it's been at the bottom of the well since the 12th century while the experts can't agree on the age of the piece and the quality of the craftsmanship that went into making it they can't quite agree on which deity it's supposed to represent it's probably gen art hana also known as vishnu murthy but the team isn't confident enough to say that with certainty the sculpture is so detailed that it has clearly visible earrings anklets armlets and even detailed eyebrows sadly its feet and right hand are missing but the team is still digging out the well and they might turn up yet they had to go 20 feet down before they found this idol so there may be even older relics beneath it with a bit of luck they might find something that tells them how the temple became a ruin in the first place just because something's in a museum doesn't mean it hasn't been stolen from somewhere else the british museum is often accused of housing stolen goods but our next story actually involves the allard pearson museum in the netherlands in january 2021 the museum was forced to explain itself when a sharp-eyed antique expert noticed a long-lost looted greek vase among its collection christos siri giannis who's based at the aris institute of advanced studies in denmark is on a personal quest to seek out and identify stolen or looted goods in museums all over the world and this beautiful vase is his latest successful mission this isn't the first time the museum has faced questions about how it gets its hands on its exhibits the dutch newspaper nrc has run several articles in the past about the dubious sourcing of some of the most popular artifacts within its halls this particular vase is roughly 2570 years old and features depictions of trojan war hero enians christo's research indicates that the piece was acquired by convicted illegal art dealer giacomo medici during the 1990s how it then came to end up in the museum is unknown so far the museum hasn't released a statement and the vase remains within its walls but we wouldn't bet on it staying that way for much longer [Music] there have been archaeologists working at the site of pompeii since 1748. you'd have thought that they'd have found everything there is to find by now but that's not the case in february 2021 a research team reported the discovery of this full-sized ceremonial chariot experts have been looking for the chariot since 2018 when they found the remains of a stable and three horses they figured a chariot might be nearby and now they finally have their hands on this four-wheeled beauty based on its design historians believe that it was probably used for festivities and celebrations like weddings in that way it could be compared to the wedding chariots that some people still like to use today most of the chariot is made from iron but it's in good enough condition for archaeologists to be able to confirm that it also features ten and bronze adornments with a floral pattern decoration and even some traces of the ropes still attached writings from ancient rome sometimes refer to a vehicle called a pillitum which was used to transport a bride to her new home after the completion of a wedding ceremony it seems likely that we've now found one at long last how interesting could an old tree possibly be well that very much depends on the tree in this case the answer is very interesting because these trees are 18 million years old 14 fossilized trees have been found thus far on the greek island of lespos all of which were buried by volcanic eruptions that happened in prehistoric times the most recent of the discoveries were made in november 2020. there's an already known petrified forest in the area around sigri which is where these ancient trees were found but the trees that still stand on the land are nowhere near this old the existence of these long buried specimens was unknown until construction work began on a new pipeline for the area which required excavation work that unveiled them for the first time in the human era the force of the volcanic eruptions was so violent that it ripped the trees from the ground and completely covered them in volcanic ash floods and heavy rains then followed sweeping the trees along a valley and then depositing them here in a pile the research team currently working at the site hopes that they'll eventually be able to create a new map of the area as it appeared at the time these trees were alive the river thames flows into the city of london england and is enormous it's hard to get a sense of the scale of the river until you see it with your own eyes if you ever do you might also see groups of people combing the shore for lost artifacts that might have washed up on it these people are known as mudlarkers and they've been responsible for some surprising discoveries over the years roman coins are common discoveries on the banks of the thames but rarer and more valuable items are frequently discovered too like a 570 year old merchant's ring there's even been a georgian era button featuring a tiny erotic drawing discovered within the past 12 months the tides of the thames change twice a day disturbing long-lost items on the riverbed and sweeping them to the muddy banks those items can come from any era in history one of the most ancient things to be discovered recently is a tooth that comes from a species of shark that's been extinct for three and a half million years someone even found a 16th century native american pipe which was probably knocked overboard from a trading vessel in the distant past you have to apply to the local authorities for a special license to become a mud locker but it's a very rewarding hobby [Music] every battle helmet tells a story and this one might tell the tale of someone who took a severe blow to the head during the war between the greeks and the persians 2500 years ago some of the disfigurations of the ancient headgear can be put down to the fact that it's spent the past two and a half millennia in israel's haifa harbor but the hole at the top of the helmet was almost certainly created by a direct hit the style of the artifact tells us that it was worn by someone on the greek side of the conflict its discovery was accidental it was swept up by a dutch ship passing through the harbor in 2007. the persians ruled the area at the time this protective piece was made and when the greeks attacked they mostly did so from warships at sea it's likely the owner of this helmet was on such a ship when he was struck it's possible that the force of the impact knocked his helmet off and sent it overboard but it's perhaps more likely that he went overboard with it and the helmet fell off in the process [Music] 1 500 years ago in the ancient turkish city of sardis someone was struggling to complete a diy project they were trying to fit new terracotta tiles to their floor but their puppy kept walking over the wet clay that left tiny paw prints in the tiles and those paw prints are still there today it seems the puppy wasn't the only animal living in the house elsewhere on the floor we find the hoof prince of a goat accidentally allowing a puppy to scamper across wet clay is something we can understand but letting a goat do the same thing seems careless perhaps the owner didn't mind elsewhere in their home which was excavated in january 2021 we find impressions of chickens pressed into the walls and even paintings on the plaster designed to make the walls look like curtains whoever lived here apparently had quite a keen sense of humor that sits at odds with the collection of five long swords that were found elsewhere in the same property only three weapons of that kind have ever been found elsewhere in this ancient city so this person had quite the collection perhaps they were a high-ranking soldier who liked to work hard during the day and then indulge their playful side when they got home finding just one unique artifact usually represents a good day's work for an archaeologist so we imagine our next story was a career highlight for all the archaeologists involved in it a team working in an old iroquois village close to toronto and canada confirmed in october 2020 that they'd found more than 35 000 unique artifacts and they were still adding to their collection the village was settled approximately 720 years ago and has become the most valuable source of information about the ancient iroquois tribe in all of canada discoveries have come in both the large and small varieties ranging from entire longhouses to tiny pieces of stone tools and shards of ceramics that were once used for food preparation there are also a couple of enigmas like a shakidani projectile point made of material that can't be found in the local area some of the objects recovered from the ground go back to a time much earlier than the founding of the village the oldest stone tool artifact found thus far was made approximately 4 000 years ago eventually the team expects to be able to prove that people have been living here almost constantly for more than 10 000 years the most famous depiction of the sphinx in the world can famously be found in egypt but it's far from the only one the sphinx isn't native or exclusive to egypt you'll also find depictions of it in greece israel india and ancient persia we're focusing on india right now though because that's where a fascinating sphenx discovery was made in october 2020. this extremely rare sphinx seal was found during an archaeological dig in patanam kerala the design and style of the seal which was worn as a ring is significant because of the greco-roman head this might represent the first solid evidence that platanum was once part of the ancient port of missouri's a place that some historians believe to be nothing more than a myth the port's name appears multiple times in ancient tamil writings but no location is ever given and no evidence of the physical existence of such a place has been discovered until now if this is missouri's it was a port that connected india to north africa persia and the middle east and the roman controlled territories in the mediterranean in other words it would have been the most important port city in the world 1800 years ago it will take more evidence than this seal ring to confirm the finding but it's a good start the grand and stately homes of england probably hide a lot of history it's just that archaeologists rarely get an opportunity to look through or underneath them one of those rare opportunities came up in august 2020 when the floorboards of oxburgh hall in norfolk were lifted for the first time in centuries the house dates all the way back to the country's tutor period which lasted from the late 15th to early 17th century as the boards came up as part of a project to re-roof the property all manner of historic items came to life one of them is a single page from a very rare illustrated 15th century manuscript which rather begs the question of where the rest of the manuscript is the page picked out in gold leaf comes from the latin vulgate psalm 39 elsewhere was a 1590 copy of the book the ancient famous and honorable history of ahmadis de gaulle an iberian romance novel written in 1420 what was briefly thought to be a rat's nest in the northwest corner of the exposed room turned out to be a pile of more than 200 pieces of elizabethan fabrics including velvet satin and silk the scattered and separated nature of the finds suggests that the room might have been used for what we'd consider junk storage today but what was junk to the people of the time is fascinating to us now [Music] archaeologists still aren't quite sure what to make of this next piece which was found in the polish village of biscuits in august 2020. it's an ancient bowl that bears the depiction of what seems to be a human face say for the fact that the face has horns attached to it based on the known age of the village it's possible that the bowl could be anything up to seven thousand years old vaguely similar pieces from this era have been found in slovakia and hungary which implies that there might have been contact between the three territories all that time ago but there's an important difference the faces on the slavic and hungarian pieces don't have horns the polish one does still there's compelling evidence of ancient contact because of the presence of other artifacts made from obsidian found at the same site obsidian is a volcanic glass that doesn't occur naturally in poland at all so it must have been imported from elsewhere over 3 000 artifacts have been found during this archaeological dig so far but almost all of them can be identified easily it's only this strange bull that's proving to be a mystery and thus far it's a mystery without a resolution subscribe to the
