Man, when LPL doesn't even mention that it's the tool that he and Bosnian Bill made, and doesn't even speak while opening the lock, that's when you know he's serious lmao
From my experience, most general locksmiths don’t actually pick locks - they just grind or drill through just to open. Then they try to sell you their replacement products.
Fun fact. It takes me longer to open that lock WITH THE KEY. Constant fiddling to get the key to rotate the full 180 degrees is always a good time.
Edit for some useful replies. Sounds like there is a good chance they’ve changed their designs. My lock is about 4 years old at this point. It’s had this issue, however, since day one.
And to those offering advice on lube/cleaning, it isn’t consistent at all. It’s like the key doesn’t move the pins properly or something, because every once in a while, it moves almost without friction at all. But that’s a quite rare occurrence.
Appreciate all the helpful replies, as I’ll still be tinkering with it to see if improvements can be had.
I really enjoy LPL's videos, he's one of the Youtubers who got me into picking as a hobby. His videos don't have cuts and he's pretty open about how he approaches a lock. He's even open about the fact that for most lock, he's spent a lot of time opening it several times before he produces the final video.
I think it's funny that once a time challenge is given, he drops all the "click on 1, nothing on 2" and just gets down to it and opens the lock.
My favorite part of the video was him pulling the box cutter towards his thumb and me thinking "that's a great way to cut yourself, but he probably has careful, steady hands and..." and then seeing the bandaid on his thumb
Think the problem is most people give locksmiths too much credit. around here you can just call yourself a locksmith. no training or certification needed. thats why most of them just drill or cut locks. seems like the lock picking extent of most locksmiths are trying to use bump keys.
I get the locksmith being like "I can't pick this" but trying to act like it's impossible that someone with the right kind of tool and the specialized skillset could is where he was out of line.
A lot of people commenting that they are concerned that people out there have the knowledge and know-how to get through their home parameter within seconds.
I worked in private security responding to burglary calls for several years. Of all the years I have worked in the industry I have responded to 100s of calls to residential/commercial/industrial/banking/public building properties. Not a single one of the residential calls was ever malicious. Not one.
Your house locks and security measures, locks, doors, windows, lights, alarms, etc, are there to slow down, frustrate, and poise enough of a challenge to potential burglars, that they view the target as not worth the risk of getting caught or effort to get into or so them down ling enough that Police, security, a neighbor, or the home owner can respond. They are not meant to stop outright the perpetrator.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Most criminals are lazy and/or stupid and are just looking for quick cash. Make it a challenge for them and they won't bother. If they are lazy, they won't bother with it if it's a hassle. If they are stupid they won't be able to get past the security measures.
The people that have this kind of knowledge, to get through locks, are intelligent enough that they know the risk of such deviant behaviour is not worth the risk and/or intelligent enough that they can make more than enough money working legitimately.
The issue isn't that the locksmith didn't know how to open it. He could have said, "I don't think this lock can be picked. There may be people with those tools and skills, I'm not one of them yet. Do you want me to continue?" Instead he doubled down on his ignorance and said it can't be done. That's why he should own up to his mistake and pay the $75 bet.
