the lord became my protector he brought me out to a place of freedom he saved me because he delighted in me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit we continue to pray for peace in the ukraine and with russia and we pray as well for all those who are affected especially by the floods currently in australia can celebrating with me today is father martin monsil who is the chaplain at saint vincent de paul at saint vincent's hospital rather the hospital chaplain caring for our sick brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint peter it was this salvation that the prophets were looking and searching so hard for their prophecies were about the grace which was to come to you the spirit of christ which was in them foretold the sufferings of christ and the glories that would come after them and they tried to find out at what time and in what circumstances all this was to be expected it was revealed to them that the news they brought of all the things which have now been announced to you by those who preached to you the good news through the holy spirit sent from heaven was for you and not for themselves even the angels longed to catch a glimpse of these things free your minds then of encumbrances control them and put your trust in nothing but the grace that will be given you when jesus christ is revealed do not behave in the way that you like to do before you learnt the truth make a habit of obedience be holy in all you do since it is the holy one who has called you and scripture says be holy for i am holy the word of the lord the lord has made known his salvation sing a new song to the lord for he has worked wonders glory to you oh lord what about us peter asked jesus we have left everything and followed you jesus said i tell you solemnly there is no one who has left house brothers sister father children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over houses brothers sisters mothers children land not without persecution now in this present time and in the world to come eternal life many who are first will be last and the last first the gospel of the lord i still remember at world youth day in sydney when pope benedict was preaching to the hundreds of thousands of young people gathered he said something which at the time i thought was rather challenging i didn't quite understand he said dear young people god takes nothing away but gives you everything and this statement was something i found challenging because i was in the midst of discerning a vocation to priesthood and contemplating giving up on a wife and children and i thought does god really take nothing away the point is that god gives us brothers and sisters everything that we need for our happiness in this life but we have a responsibility to to choose the good that god puts before us and sometimes in order to say yes to one good we say no to another and so we're about to enter into the season of lent a time where we are asked to say no to certain goods to abstain for example from eating meat at times to fast and to give up on perhaps other things material or otherwise that we have found ourselves becoming attached to the famous psalm the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want says that if we were to have lost everything that is good in this world but still held on to the lord as our god we lose nothing and so brothers and sisters let us not just think about what we will be abstaining from during this season of lent which starts tomorrow but let's think about how much good god is inviting us to discover in relying utterly upon him for our happiness pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church o god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as a source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for justice through your beloved son you created the human race so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew and so it is right that all your creatures serve you all the redeemed praise you and all your saints with one heart bless you therefore we too extol you with all the angels as in joyful celebration we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name and therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god saint joseph her spouse and with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs saint louis and with all the saints on his constantly decession in your presence we're alive for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and anthony our bishop and his auxiliary bishops the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion oh merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit
