[Music] i am the salvation of the people says the lord should they cry to me in any distress i will hear them and i will be their lord forever in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you brothers and sisters this mass is being celebrated today because of the crisis close to home we've been so worried about the dreadful events in ukraine with the russian invasion there but we have now the crisis of the flooding in northern new south wales this is an unprecedented event many lives and much property is at risk i have a family my own family in harm's way up there so let us implore the lord for his continued mercies and that everyone will be kept safe so the prius of this mess uh the special prayers for mass in time of flood and for special needs the readings are the usual readings for this monday of the eighth week let us begin by acknowledging our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray look upon us oh god and see the floods that devastate the earth grant we pray hope to our troubled hearts and new life to the damaged land through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the first letter of saint peter blessed be god the father of our lord jesus christ who in his great mercy has given us a new birth as his sons by raising jesus christ from the dead so that we can have a sure hope and the promise of an inheritance that can never be spoiled or soiled and never fade away because it is being kept for you in the heavens through your faith god's power will guard you until the salvation which has been prepared is revealed at the end of time this is the cause of great joy for you even though you may for a short time have to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials so that when jesus christ is revealed your faith will have been tested and proved like gold only it is more precious than gold which is corruptable even though it bears testing by fire and then you will have praise and glory and honor you will not see him yet you love him and still without seeing him you are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described because you believe and you are sure of the end sure of the end to which your faith looks forward that is the salvation of your souls this is the word of the lord the response the lord will remember his covenant forever i will thank the lord with all my heart in the meeting of the just and their assembly great are the works of the lord to be pondered by all who love them he gives food to those who fear him keep his covenant ever in mind he has shown his might to his people by giving them the hands of the nations he has sent deliverance to his people and established his covenant forever holy his name to be feared to the f to fear the lord is the beginning of wisdom all who do so prove themselves wise his praise shall last forever hallelujah hallelujah jesus christ was rich but he became poor to make you rich out of his poverty hallelujah the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up knelt before him and put this question to him good master what must i do to inherit eternal life jesus said to him why do you call me good no one is good but god alone you know the commandments you must not kill you must not commit adultery you must not steal you must not bring false witness you must not defraud honor your father and mother and he said to him master i have kept all these from my earliest days jesus looked steadily at him and loved him and he said there is one thing you lack go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven then come follow me but his face fell at these words and he went away sad for he was a man of great wealth jesus looked round and said to his disciples how hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of god the disciples were astounded by these words but jesus insisted my children he said to them how hard it is to enter the kingdom of god it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god they were more astonished than ever in that case they said to one another who can be saved jesus gazed at them for men he said it is impossible but not for god because everything is possible for god the gospel of the lord everything is possible for god jesus reassures us of that and of course we should realize it anyway and so we have faith and trust that the lord hears our prayers and so we make to him our prayers of course every day for all of the many needs that we have in recent days we've been lifting up our prayers to the lord especially for peace and for the people in the ukraine we realize that we need to do better as a human race we need our society to do better we need and this is of course a worldwide need for the whole human family we need to [Music] sift out from our hearts all that is corrupt and evil that does not mean however that our lives will be without difficulty and trauma even nature can throw things very great things our way and this of course is what is happening now with the flooding in and around lismore i'm reminded of that famous thing that king david said in the old testament where he david had sinned greatly against god by wanting to have a account of the people kind of relying on another example of humanity trying to rely on our own strength and power and not on god anyway david had sinned greatly and so god sent the prophet to him to say okay well now you've got three choices about how you're going to be punished from god two of those had to do with with if you like famine and natural events and one had to do with falling victim to the armies of your enemy david said better to fall into the hands of god than into the hands of men because god we know is merciful and so he chose sort of one of the natural disaster path rather than the war and violence that would come upon him such wisdom in that even though catastrophes natural disasters i mean they haven't constantly of course and always have since the creation of the world even though they can create terrible trauma loss of life destruction and death they do not have behind them the the malice the corruption the evil of the people who cause war who oppress who are corrupt who are violent and so it is better to fall into the hands of a provident god than malicious people and so with the crisis of the flooding and there's real risk to life and property there and great trauma already and there will be in days to come i've lived through a couple of those floods and i have memories of it from my childhood it's a very scary thing for instance to be sitting on the veranda of a house in the middle of an ocean of brown water and the waters coming closer and closer to the floorboards and the water rushes with tremendous power for hundreds of yards in every direction and the roar of the water too is pretty scary so i've got some conception of what it's like for many people we entrust everyone's safety welfare well-being to the lord in his mercy and in his providence that the flooding will subside and that people will be kept safe and not only people the loss of animals the the amount of death of livestock but also of of wild animals in these events is truly awful to see yes it may be natural but it's awful to see it scars our earth and our earth has plenty of scars already so let us pray for the lord's loving mercy and pray especially for the safety of those who who are trapped who are who are stuck in their house who are in danger from the flood waters and those who are seeking to rescue them blessed are you lord god all creation fall through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the line we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become a spiritual drink pray brothers and sisters said my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father accept in compassion lord we pray the offerings of your family that under your protective care they may never lose what they have received but attain the gifts that are eternal through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks father of mercies and faithful god for you have given us jesus christ your son as our lord and redeemer he always showed compassion for children and for the poor for the sick and for sinners and he became a neighbor to the oppressed and the afflicted by word and deed he announced to the world that you are our father and that you care for all your sons and daughters and so with all the angels and saints we exalt and bless your name and sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you live through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the passable sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion bring your church o lord to perfect faith and charity together with francis our pope and anthony our bishop with all bishops priests and deacons and the entire people you have made your own open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened make us serve them truly after the example of christ and at his command and may your church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom to peace and justice that all people may be raised up to a new hope remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the apostles and martyrs and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed come to me all who labor and are burdened and i will refresh you says the lord let us pray we pray o lord that in receiving your sacrament we may experience help in mind and body so that kept safe in both we may glory in the fullness of heavenly healing through christ our lord just a reminder of the mass times for ash wednesday this wednesday 6 45 12 noon 1 10 and 5 30. and
