perform the moonwalk and who couldn't creating a subjugated slave class of non moonwalkers exploited by a small moonwalking elite well no not really but that is the plot of my first novel moonwalking me to heaven vailable in bookshops everywhere I can sneak it onto shelves number 47 in 1984 DNA testing was developed by British geneticist Alec Jeffrey's allowing for widespread use in forensic science immigration disputes and on reality TV shows much to the delight of young men everywhere who are not the father number 48 1984 also saw the release of Apple's first Macintosh computer the purchased by the CIA after the author's death in 1950 against his will the agency changed the ending of all Welles famous warning against government policing to improve global perceptions of the West completely missing the glaring irony along the way number 55 Coco was a gorilla who learned to communicate through sign language and found her way into everyone's hearts through her relationship with Robin Williams as well as a smaller but equally hairy friend in 1983 Coco asked for a pet kitten what she got for her birthday the next year and it was exactly as cute as it sounds number 56 less cute but in March of 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev who most of us know as the man who looked like he had something spilled on his head but he didn't was appointed leader of the Soviet Union Gorbachev changed pollution and in case you're wondering it's still there number 60 February of 1985 marked the official end of the in history between Rome and Carthage this seems like an unfair accolade to received though as conflict in the third Punic War actually ended around 2,000 years earlier and the peace treaty was mostly a formality stuff like this is just ruining the competition for real Wars number 61 all the previous facts are about to get even more impressive as they took place before the patent - one of the greatest inventions of all time on February 12th 1995 patent number four million four forgotten that between 1985 and 1986 Saturday Night Live welcomed one robert downey jr as a regular cast member as a relative unknown back then Downey jr. was a complete flop and is regarded by many as the show's worst of almost 150 cast members somehow though I don't think he minds too much these days Nintendo 64 John Hughes iconic teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off wasn't released until June 11th 1986 but data taken from the baseball game he attends in the film was used to pinpoint Ferris actual day off as June the 5th 1985 number 65 despite having been born in Tennessee Aretha Franklin's AIDS patient without a glove on live television this wasn't because she was the first world to touch one of us commoners with her real hand but because it challenged two widely held beliefs that the disease could be passed on by contact which by the way is a lie number 79 the Turin Shroud is a length of linen with what appears to be an image of Jesus on it it was long believed to be in the cloth of the man himself was wrapped in when he was brought down from the cross but carbon dating from Oxford University in 1988 showed that this couldn't be the case as the Shroud was only 728 years old have been lost the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq came to an end and there was never any conflict in either of those two countries ever again right right no oh number 82 where Americans have both the dollar bill and the dollar coin we Brits only have the pound coin but this wasn't always the case until 1988 the English pound note was legal tender they were phased out because coins were much more durable and because the phrase pound pound notes y'all just didn't sound as good as dolla dolla bill number 83 just to give you an idea of how long ago the 80s were in 1988 President Ronald Reagan named the small business Person of the Year the accolade went to a little ice cream company owned by some men I don't know what came of them called Ben and Jerry number 84 at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal host nation Canada achieved the impressive feat of being the first host country to not win a single gold medal on home soil if that wasn't impressively unimpressive enough they managed the feat a second time when they hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary that's the Winter Olympics Canada you're good at snow number 85 we've all heard the Domino's ads called to us through the TV and struggled to find the voice in our head telling us to do something about it but this took a much darker meaning when a mentally ill man named Kenneth Lloyd believed the company's out campaign featuring the noid was a personal attack on him in response noid the human one not the animated one took Dom Lee's employees hostage on January 30th 1989 and while no one was hurt the campaign was understandably discontinued number 86 on November 9th 1989 the Berlin wall which separated East and West Germany was brought down paving the way for German reunification in 1990 I believe David Hasselhoff was there too I thought number 87 in 1989 Tiananmen Square in China was the spot of major pro-democracy protests culminating with forcible action being taken against the protesters and spawning the iconic tank man photo number 88 the biggest solar storm in history was recorded in 1989 it became visible on earth on March 5th and was so huge that the northern lights were in southern US states like Florida if you hadn't guessed by the way that's a big deal because the Northern Lights are typically only seen you know in the north number 89 one of the most significant events of the 80s and probably the whole 20th century took place in 1989 when British scientist Tim berners-lee invented the world wide web and without that you wouldn't be able to like and subscribe character in The Wizard of Oz but the Navy believed Dorothy was the elusive leader of a ring of gay military personnel number 93 1989 was also the year in which pop song stress Taylor Swift was born Swift later named her fifth album after this particular year giving me the opportunity to write the fact about something I actually know about and have experienced directly despite having never set foot in the 80s number 94 musical parody artist and actual hero of mine Weird Al Yankovic revealed in 2010 that sometime in the late 1980s he turned down a five million dollar endorsement offer for an unnamed beer company he claimed that he thought it would be ethically wrong because a lot of his fans were young and impressionable although he now admits he wouldn't really mind the money number 95 throughout the 80s the Los Angeles underworld was dominated by freeway Rick Ross an illiterate cocaine kingpin who at one point was making 2 to 3 million dollars a week as for his cocaine supplier it was none other than the CIA who sold it to him as a way to illegally finance the right-wing rebel Contras group in Nicaragua number 96 the 80s were just a wacky time for drug dealing in Scotland rival ice cream truck drivers would sell drugs from their trucks they'd also commit arson and even shoot at each other in the streets of Glasgow in what became known as the ice cream Wars number 97 another decidedly cute name but something considerably more scary was the decepticons in the 80s back when transformers was just a fun cartoon and not explosions punctuated by shots and Megan Fox's cleavage not advisable number 100 Margaret Thatcher reigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom throughout the entirety of the 1980s known as the Iron Lady due to her uncompromising leadership style she is remembered fondly by some that guiding the country through tumultuous times and vicious hated by many others for policies that eviscerated working-class communities whatever the side of the fence your run she was played by Meryl Streep so that's a pretty big honor I hope to be one day - it's gonna take good luck to drag me away from 101 the 80s are also responsible for some Co DeMaio being a significantly bigger event in America than in its native country of Mexico as with basically every holiday you love this happened because beer companies used it as a marketing opportunity
