whether you're a millennial who grew up glued to the television screen or whether you're just a fan of 90s cartoons hey Arnold was hands-down one of the best that the decade had to offer this is Arnold the show followed a fourth grader and his friends and how they navigated through some of life's biggest challenges both at home and at school and as fun as the show was as well as how much it taught us it often went to some pretty dark places to get its lessons and points across places that made us feel emotional reflect and sometimes even question what the producers were thinking and today we're looking back at ten times that hey Arnold got depressingly dark let's get started number ten a system designed to fail the world we live in isn't always fair and one of the more heartbreaking examples of this is when children aren't offered certain opportunities because the place or financial status that they were born into Hey Arnold showcases this when the school we've come to know and love PS 118 falls victim to a faculty that at times isn't exactly successful whether it's a teacher who doesn't care numerous budget cuts or a curriculum that's just plain failing its students just ask the 13 year olds who are in the fourth grade in one episode Arnold is tasked with tutoring Torvald ok spaz boy to tutor me a 13 year old still in the fourth grade that means he's been held back three or maybe even four years and not only that Harold has a bar mitzvah in one episode thirteen year old is seen as a man in the eyes of the Jewish people which means he's also 13 how are all these kids being held back three or four times number nine mom dad where are you we all know that Arnold is being raised by lovable but kooky grandparents what most of us have questioned during the show is what really happened to his parents now if we were to only go with the cartoon series the question is left unanswered much to the viewers displeasure but it is answered in the movie which was created in 2017 13 long years after the show ended Arnold visits San Lorenzo the country in Central America where he was born and discovers that his parents have been plagued by a sleeping sickness which he and his friends managed to cure despite finally finding out what went on with his parents and bringing them home in the movie it was pretty clear that their disappearance really affected the young boy for one he wore the gift his parents gave him every single day of his life and was severely depressed when he lost it to further prove this point he's constantly seen throughout the series wondering about their fates and even going as far as imagining adventures the three of them might have had if they were still around number eight crime stops for no cartoon crime when it comes to most cartoons is usually very limited if it exists at all Hey Arnold reminded us that it's not always rainbows and butterflies and the episode mugged where he's beaten up and his belongings are taken gimme money and all for a few dollars in Arnold's bus pass Arnold then learns to defend himself with martial arts moves that his grandmother teaches him so that he would be prepared if it were to happen again what's dark about this episode is that the mugger is doing this for kicks and giggles and not because he needs the money but it gets darker Arnold then begins to provoke badger and even hurt people in his neighborhood using the very skills his grandmother gave him to defend himself it goes to show that violence really does breed violence even in cartoons number seven in the name of love and war does anyone remember the Arnold's Christmas episode where mr. Wynn's story is finally revealed a resident in Arnold's grandparents house this Vietnamese man with a love for country music doesn't quite like Christmas and everyone wants to know why Arnold soon finds out that mr. Wynn made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up his daughter to the US military during the Vietnam War in the hopes that she would have a chance at a better life the episode not only shows us this man sorrow but also the bad things that come with war destruction starvation and fear as well as the displacement of families it's definitely a really dark backstory to be revealed especially during the show's Christmas special number six cycle of bullying if you've seen any Hey Arnold episodes featuring Harold Berman you'll know that this kid is far from innocent he's obnoxious immature and quite honestly a big bully literally too don't worry Arnold we know how to be discreet and here lies the problem Harold is very overweight something you noticed just by the way his shirt doesn't even begin to cover his protruding gut in the episode weighing Harold we see just how much Errol drily goes through on a daily basis not only is he teased by kids but adults also take a piece out of him every day from being called tubby tubby me hearing his own dad say that he could stand to lose a few pounds and even having a bet made between cyd and stinky that he'll weigh 300 pounds by the time he's in the sixth grade Harold has endured a lot so why do we feel sorry for a bully isn't he getting a taste of the pain that he inflicts on people every day the honest answer is yes but Harold struggles with his weight which is a huge insecurity of his and let's not forget that he is just the kid as we almost always see in real life bullies are the way they are because of some deeper issues really Harold's bullying behavior is likely a product of the bullying directed at him number 5 Helga's unnatural and unhealthy obsession let's be honest Helga is a child who has been starved of love [Music] and it seems like she's taken years of what she's needed from her parents and those around her and molded it into something very unnatural and unhealthy from season one we've seen the way that Helga treats Arnold when she's speaking directly to him versus the way that she acts when she's alone face to face it almost seems like she treats Arnold the way her parents treat her but when she's alone she acts how she wanted to be treated by them it's a dichotomy that most of us have laughed at but when you analyze it it's actually really sad this young girl literally has a shrine dedicated to Arnold she's so afraid of being rejected by Arnold as she's been rejected by her own parents that she keeps her feelings bottled up allowing for an unparalleled obsession that we've really rarely seen on television let alone a children's show number four poverty doesn't discriminate when Lila first walked into PS 118 no one knew based on her looks of course that she lived in poverty in the Miss Perfect episode she was introduced to us as a beautiful girl with wonderful fashion sense to things that spell immediate popularity it would then be revealed by some very jealous girls that Lila and her father barely have enough money for groceries that things were so bad that the two reside in a horrible neighborhood one of the worst in the city and that their apartment was literally falling apart and all of this revealed after the girls played a humiliating prank on Lila [Music] the struggle was a real one with Lila and it really shined a light on the issue of poverty number three and the negligent parents of the Year award goes to Helga Pataki is the daughter of Miriam Pataki and a parent's alcoholic and Big Bob Pataki a negligent father we Pataki's don't talk about things to sweep under the rug some things are best swept under the rug if that's not bad enough she's also the younger sister of the perfect Olga the child her parents prefer and aren't afraid to show it she hasn't received much affection from either parents is constantly called her sister's name and is forgotten so often that it's become nothing to her this has affected Helga on an almost molecular level and has made her the girl she is today it almost seems like there's such a lack of love for her in her own home that she treats people the same way her parents treat her even the one person she claims to love so much it kind of makes up for every time she's bullied someone in or out of school or called Arnold football head clearly this girl has a lot going on at home and shows just how strong she is by waking up every day and going to school even if she does act out now and then number two fear of abandonment for those of you who aren't too familiar with stoop kid here's his story he was abandoned on you guessed it a stoop when he was just a baby and hasn't left it since his attachment to this set of stairs is although somewhat understandable incredibly unhealthy his refusal and fear of leaving has turned him into an aggressive person who often shouts at anyone passing by when they get too close as to how this young man has managed to survive all these years we can't exactly say but he gets some food from a nearby apple tree which grows somewhat over a stoop and washes his hair and we're assuming his body with a nearby hose he has a miniature television that he watches sometimes and one book the little engine that could which he taught himself how to read now as entertaining as his story is we need to look at the facts here this character is a deserted child with no name and severe abandonment issues he has below average literacy skills acts almost viciously towards people and has never had anyone to rely on the only thing that he has full trust in is his stoop and if that's not sad and depressing I don't know what is number one chocolate boy the addict from stoop kid to chocolate boy it's safe to say that it may have been a bit difficult for the producers to get creative with some of the characters names either that or these names serve the purpose and letting us know just how hopeless these characters were enter chocolate boy a very young child with an addiction to you guessed it chocolate chocolate boy you want some more chocolates which he uses to fill the void of his parents not being there during his childhood like many real-life addicts he's done many humiliating things to feed this need of his I'll give you more chocolate but first you have to do a little dance for us such as dumpster diving in a sense it shows us what Arnold could have been had he not had his grandparents in his life addiction is a serious issue and it goes without saying that chocolate is a metaphor for other far more deadly substances to see a child animated or not suffering from such a hopeless addiction was arguably the darkest thing on the show when you factor in the obvious metaphor and it doesn't help that he overcame the addiction with Arnold's assistance because it left room for him to latch onto something else radishes as delicious as it is chocolate is truly a gateway drug but what do you think what was the most depressingly dark episode of Hey Arnold let us know in the comments section below don't forget to like this video subscribe and hit that notification bell but most importantly stay wicked [Music] you
