boy it's good to be back two days without uploading a video that's very unusual for me nice to have a couple days off we had a bad storm and the family we just kind of hunkered down and played risk played a lot of risk jack is a savage competitor if we didn't finish it - the board is sitting unfinished on the dining room table but today we're going to talk about the ten essential items why the ten essential item sale it's actually more than ten or you know I mean be kind of is this it's hard to just categorize it into ten but people like lists I like lists I like things that I could check things off and know that I've got myself squared away so it loosely fits into a ten list categories some things being multiples so what's the importance of this bag what is this wealthy you're probably all familiar many of you with the term bug-out bag or bailout bag or 48 hour 24 hour bag there's lots of things on there there's lots almost everyone who runs a youtube channel has done one and I have watched a bunch of them I like watching those I like watching EDC videos but what I find with them is many times are not very practical they're just loaded up with a bunch of trinkets a bunch of junks thing things that it just sound like good a good idea in theory but don't really work so I have learned so much as a wildland firefighter disperse first responder and showing up to situations where there's no power there there's no food there's all these different things what really do you need what really is important so for me these bags it was one for each one of my family what our purpose is is they stay in the vehicle they stay in the vehicle and that if we need to get home we can get home weak if we have to walk home Four Seasons whatever any time of the year you know you kind of have to tailor for that but we've got it pretty well refined we've been doing it for years all three of our bags are a little bit different today we're going to go over mine so let's just get into it so the bag you know we talked about bags in previous videos you can search that but let's just go I'm gonna start first off with a good canteen a canteen that's going to be full of water and I wrap mine with duct tape milspec guerrilla tile guerilla style duct tape is essential now this bag is something you know I do talk about they'll forget or the or the put it in here and leave it alone or completely forget about it theory and that is true by at large so when you're putting different things in here like a knife or a multi-tool don't put things in here that you're going to be constantly rating because chances are they just don't get back one thing that I've done has been very helpful is to put a piece of ribbon or a piece of duct tape or masking tape on there with a sharpie and write on there when you take something out that way when you see it like okay I took that out and it's not in there so that helps for me water canteen duct tape doesn't matter just have that you'll use it all the time many times in road trips did you bring any water no we didn't bring any water we can go to this prevents us from going and spending five six dollars costly buying costly filtered water at a convenience store next is gonna be an MRE MREs are not the most delicious food but they are so compact and they are so will you be so grateful you don't have them I have broke it into these many times when we just got far out or we went mushroom picking or there were just different things that we couldn't get back in and the kids were hungry or my life is hungry pick your favorite flavors maybe not if you like MREs pick the one that you like the least that way you're less likely to go and rate it when you don't want to cook some night but an MRE one MRE is really great next I'm going to put in a road flare you can get these anywhere they're so great you can start a fire in pretty much any condition with a road flare if you have a flat tire you can throw it out there at night I mean it's a spooky thing changing a tire on a soft shoulder at night with trucks going by and you'd be glad to have something like this a road flare is better than a light stick in my opinion because you can start fire with it you can really get pretty much anything going with it if you are glasses or contacts make sure you have extras I take some old frames and I when I get glasses just have some cheap lenses put in when you can time some specials put them in a hard case so they won't get crushed man you got to have that also you know that goes if you have particular medicines or B allergies or anything like that have that in there make sure you have that in there next is going to be a good knife a good fixed blade knife don't put your prized possession bushcraft knife in there there's a high chance if most of us who have suffered break-ins or had things stolen from us have been from vehicles so you know think about that when you're sourcing this stuff you want quality but you don't want it to break your heart you want I don't know that I'd want to put a 200 dollar benchmade in here put a good knife like this sog here something like that with a firesteel in the sheet is a great option what for well a million different things I mean if you needed to wrap vine maples around your axles you could get down there and cut it and there's lots of things that can happen personal fence personal defense god forbid but can't go wrong with a good fixed blade stall solid sturdy knife like a ball cap baseball cap especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest like we do where it rains a lot man there's nothing more miserable and it's have to be out in the rain with glasses on and not have something to keep your glasses dry a ball cap or sunshine anything like that just just put your old worn-out stuff a good quality raincoat these can be found packable raincoats like this really good ones at thrift stores junk shops anything like that they always have them get something name-brand that is that you can really fold up it's got a hood in it make sure it's got a hood in it so you can have a rain jacket and that doesn't take up much space and how how glad would you be if you had to make a 10 15 20 mile walk in the ring I mean I'm always thinking about rain you know where depending on where you live in is you're living down in Florida you're not going to need a down jacket but here it gets cold and usually when things go wrong and you slip off the road and and I had I'll tell you a story I had a 75 Bronco my favorite vehicles went up way up north above the logging road we're up there messing around the snow slipped off on the side of the road / the tire of course you know my teenager don't have a spare in it had to walk back miles and miles and miles at night in the rain I think I would have been happy to have something like this did I have something like this of course not but a down jacket again you can find off-color old you get stuff from the 90s you don't get good quality brands North Face Marmot Mountain Hardwear Patagonia those things are all over the place in the thrift store because they make them in such trendy colors and you know people want to have the latest greatest it doesn't diminish the quality that it's teal green so a good stuffable down jacket a good pair of shoes you might be say well I'm already wearing shoes well are you what type of shoes are you wearing you know are you wearing loafers because you take for dinner was it nice when you left the house for you and flip-flops was it sunny and shining in and now you've got to walk through across country you want to walk through flip-flops you want to have to run away or I don't want to do that in flip-flops not that I don't wear them from time to time but there's a time and a place I want some good sturdy shoes don't need to go out and buy fancy ones use your old running shoes use your old hiking shoes anything like that and stuff two things in them one is a good beanie a wool or a fleece beanie something like that and because you lose most your heat out your head you know that's why the best place to insulate your house is up in the attic because the heat rises up it's like insulation is like putting a a wool hat on your on your house you won't put a beanie and keep yourself warm pair of socks make sure you have a good pair of socks in there stuff those two things in there you know that's a complete package right there you got your shoes right all right now get into the fun stuff the mini survival kit the mini survival kit here contains quite a few things will go of them quickly waterproof matches not the cheesy crummy ones get the British lifeboat matches the big gnarly heavy ones in there and I put it looks like I got a sewing needle in there and some duct tape wrapped around it we got that we've got the marking tape marking tape is so good for so many things you could leave notes on your car if you need to leave it or to abandon it you can if you have to go cross country through and there you're unfamiliar with you can blaze a trail lots of different things marking tape is good whistle Fox 40s are probably about the best you can go good whistle to get people's attention human voice does not carry very far 50 feet of P cord I've got a fake lighter I'm all big for starting fires because you know our biggest concern is is getting stranded in Portland bridges out earthquakes we have natural disasters we talk about this all the time and so it will take me four or five days to get home or could possibly could if I'm on foot that means I got to spend a couple nights don't want to be cold well if it's a winter time yeah I mean you just you never know water filtration these aquamarin tablets are really good you can drop em in 32 ounce or one liter and they'll purify you've already got your canteen right seeking only mayor that's cheap insurance a small radio man I want to know what is going on I want to know if what what the what the latest weather report is I want to know the news and these little radios are really cheap you can get these on eBay or Amazon you'll find them all the time for 10 15 bucks great quality everything you have make sure you have two consistency with your batteries so whatever electronics you have in this kit be sure that they all run on the same thing I've made the choice to run double-a batteries double-a batteries run everything from the flashlights that I have and of course eight six eight batteries taped up here with masking tape is good like we do in wildland firefighting you don't want batteries loose jumbling around in the case because if the ends come together they can come in contact and discharge don't want that and then of course a veteran here a couple of just fire aides for fire starting so that kind of makes up the little emergency kit there should be a compass in there too I just didn't fit in the bag I want to compass as well I always like to have a have a compass around now here's here's an important thing there's a couple more things we're going to cover here and I think it's important to have these items on the outside or more of an X in an accessible place on the bag you don't want these items buried in the bag because these are everyday common things that you'll find you use all the time so on the outermost bag right here or pocket the easiest one to get to I'm going to have my flashlight so I've got a good quality of four sevens flashlights here the brand doesn't matter but just make sure that everything you have runs off the same batteries trust me this is something you're going to grab all the time because if you don't carry one in your pocket especially in wintertime when it's dark or you look for something you're going to want one also I'm going to carry a sharpie at some sort of a pad and paper that I can write things on I use this all the time when I'm you know there's just no substitute for pen and paper sometimes and yeah when I'm on the phone they need to get numbers or directions I can try to put it on my phone but it actually doesn't work for you good I like to pad and paper Sharpie had right in the rain whatever you have some cash $20 don't don't get hundreds you know keep $100 or so forty minimum in smaller bills that you can you know when the credit card machines go down we had this happen several times the credit card machines went down and we were unable to buy things that we needed because there was a sign cash only so have that you don't we don't always carry cash a multi-tool you know this is where probably I'm not going to put my very best one my expensive one I'm gonna this is a gerber one that was I don't know where I got it doesn't matter but a multi-tool in their spare contacts that is going to round out the outside pocket now there's also one more pocket which has I want to be able to be very accessible because these are things that I use all the time so this on this particular bag I can open up in here and I got a pocket and inside this one I'm going to have some cell phone stuff because one thing that meant that every time I go on a disaster we had an oil train fire that I was the first responder responder on because I have training in dealing with that the thing that the the biggest problem that we had was with communications and cell phones and people didn't have cell phone chargers the cops were showing up the first responders government federal state employees there was lots of different people there and we had a line for a little someone was running a little generator they're charging their phones it was a huge problem so in my kit I'm going to have a cable that charges my phone I'm going to have a battery backup here this is a little fuel battery that I could charge my phone two or three times I could even share it with a friend there's two outlets on there I'm going to have a 12 volt adapter so any vehicle and a 110 so I pretty much got it covered anyway to charge my phone this is important this is really important because this is the troopships the the way that we communicate and the final thing of the ten I don't know those who can be a bit stretched calling this a 10 top 10 but is a comprehensive first aid kit this is going to be based on your particular training how good what do you have are you an EMT you you first responder you know that type of thing don't don't go outside alvey's you know I don't need tell you what you guys don't need to be lectured for me about this but for Mike it is a really extensive kit with Israeli bandage so I roll up on a car wreck this has happened to me a couple times three times since I've been an EMT this has happened to me car accidents car versus pedestrian that I was the first one on scene and to have a kit like this it brought aid comfort wonderful soap whatever whatever you want to do if you don't have a good first-aid kit I recommend staying away from the stuff you're going to see it most stores the best kits are going to be from there's two guys on YouTube that have excellent ones of course the skinny medic really emphasizes trauma he's got a lot of experience gunshot wounds you know really extreme stuff and then of course aunt three my friend David Pruett and three he makes kits from great big ones unit kits down to single I fax and you get one of those and you will have a wonderful wonderful kit but that basically rounds out the bag boy we've got a lot of great stuff coming this week we've got axe videos we've got gun videos we've got storage we've got well you'd all types of great things don't forget we'll be at the mother earth news fair and Topeka Kansas coming to the great state of Kansas the entire family so come on out and meet us don't forget to drop a like on this video and we'll see you on the next one
