hi it's Katrina from a four-legged whale to the perfume of ancient royalty here are 10 strange recent archaeological discoveries number 10 Knights Templar tunnels last year researchers uncovered an 800 year old hidden tunnel network beneath the city of acre in Israel they believe these tunnels were built by an order of Catholic warrior monks famously known as the Knights Templar as a passage to their treasure tower also located with an acre at the city's port is the site of the order's former fortress pope clement v disbanded the knights templar in 1312 following a conflict between the order and Frances King Philip the 4th excavations were featured on the National Geographic series lost cities hosted by researcher Albert Lin experts created 3d maps using light detection and ranging technology called lidar which enables them to see artifacts hidden beneath things like vegetation and the Earth's surface Lyn believes that the city of acre or the tunnels more specifically may contain the Knights Templars legendary hidden treasure a gold hoard they accumulated during the Crusades it's certainly possible considering the order ruled acre for a century following the Muslim ruler Saladin's loss of Jerusalem's headquarters in 1187 but the Gold's existence has not been confirmed and whether it's somewhere within the ancient labyrinth remains to be seen number 9 iron age skeleton intrigue coffin when you work in construction you never know what you might find workers in Zurich Switzerland got quite the surprise in 2017 when they found the remains of a woman inside a tree trunk a scientific analysis revealed that she was from the iron age dating back to 2000 200 years ago a scan revealed that she enjoyed the finer things in life she was buried in a hollowed-out tree trunk wearing fancy clothing and adorned with jewelry including a brooch holding a string of blue and yellow glass and amber beads bronze bracelets and a bronze belt chain with pendants her clothes were held together by iron clasps the analysis of her remains carried out by Zurich's archaeological department showed that the woman was most likely born and raised in the areas limit valley around 200 BC she performed little physical labour throughout her life at a dental examination revealed that she enjoyed eating starchy and sweetened foods we know very little else about her number 8 the pompeii horse the 2018 discovery of a horse's body print among the ruins at pompeii reminded people that the tragedy claimed more than just human victims in december of that year archaeologists revealed a full-sized plaster replica of the animals imprint it was the first horse found at Pompeii which was submerged in volcanic ash in 79 AD amid the catastrophic eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius archaeologists created the replica of the horse using the same technique they had employed when they famously captured the final poses of many of Pompey's victims which involved injecting liquid plaster into cavities left behind after remains decomposed the horse met its untimely end in a stable at a site called chavita Juliana located outside the city's gates he or she was just short of five feet tall making the animals smaller than the average modern horse scientists found iron and bronze harness fragments near the horse's head indicating that it might have belonged to someone wealthy and that maybe someone had just run down to get the horse ready to flee before disaster struck number seven one thousand year-old Buddhist month in May of 2019 scientists discovered the mummified remains of a monk in case within a 1000 year old Buddhist statue they made the shocking find by scanning the statue in seeing the skeleton inside sitting in a lotus position back in 2015 scientists took a sample from inside the statue only to discover rotten material in paper rather than human remains it wasn't until they performed the scan last year that they realized an actual person was in there the monk who died around 1100 AD at age 37 is believed to be someone named saying also known as patriarch Zhang gong and Leo Quan Zhen gong who belonged to the Chinese meditation school researchers believe he practiced self-mummification an extremely rare ultra religious sacrificial technique that essentially involves meditating to death or as the Buddhist attempting to become a living Buddha in fact if you asked some very devout people they might say that saying isn't necessarily dead rather he is merely in a deep advanced meditative state self-mummification is a more than six year process for the first 1000 days a monk strips his body of fat by only eating basic foods like nuts berries and seeds then for the next 1000 days his diet becomes even more restrictive and he only eats bark and roots before finally drinking a poisonous tea made from Russia tree sap which makes him vomit and helps to prevent 2k after death during the third and final stage of self-mummification the monk sits inside a tomb in lotus position with an air tube and a bell he continues meditating until death and others know that this has occurred when he stops ringing the bell finally the tomb is sealed this is one of the most extreme and rare forms of religious sacrifice number six four legged whale off Peru's western coast in 2011 paleontologists discovered the fossilized skeleton of a four-legged ancient whale with webbed feet called Perego Sita's Pacifica's even more strangely its fingers and toes were equipped with small hooves it had razor-sharp teeth which it used for hunting fish the 13 foot long whale lived roughly 40 2.6 million years ago herego Sita's Pacifica's could both swim in the ocean and walk on land although this amphibious creatures tail bones were somewhat similar to those of beavers and otters it truly looked unlike anything that exists today and while it was an efficient swimmer it was not a fast Walker and certainly couldn't run which is why it fed in the water and only traveled to land for certain activities like breeding and birthing according to a new study published last year in the journal Current Biology herego citas Pacifica's departed Africa crossed the Atlantic Ocean and arrived in South America before swimming north these findings also suggest that it eventually reached the Pacific Ocean meaning that at some point it's strayed south in fact based on the fossils age it may have reached South America before America challenging the long-held notions that it traveled north first number five mysterious lost kingdom last year at an ancient round site in central Turkey called Turkmen carajo u k-- are just discovered remnants of a mysterious lost kingdom in the form of a large stone with a strange inscription although the greater area known as the Konya plain is abundant with lost cities this was different a farmer discovered the stone block called a stele in a recently dredged canal it contained writing in Lewy on a bronze and Iron Age language that scientists immediately recognized the hera glyphs translated to bragging about the defeat of the Anatolian kingdom of Phrygia roughly 3,000 years ago a major historical military victory while a few different men named Midas ruled fridgey over time linguistic analysis states the stele to a time that indicates the writing may be referring to thee famed King Midas the main guy from the golden touch myth you know where everything he touched turned to gold the heroglyph suggests that the forces of another king are taboo captured Midas this is an incredible find as little is known about king hart abu and his kingdom the stele indicates that the mound at turkmen carajo u k-- may have been hard top whose capital city and that it may have spanned some 300 acres at its peak before the discovery archaeologists had no idea of the ancient cities existence now they look forward to further exploring the mound where they anticipate finding things like houses palaces and monuments number four world's oldest intact shipwreck in late 2018 archaeologists announced the discovery of the world's oldest intact shipwreck located a mile beneath the water surface in the Black Sea off the bulgarian coast the 75 foot long Greek trading vessel has sat at its resting place for over 2,400 years it's remarkably well-preserved due to the lack of oxygen in the water surrounding it the Black Sea is well known for this anoxic layer as it's called you might recognise the vessel as the same type of ship featured on ancient Greek pottery for a long time throughout the ancient world the Black Sea was an important trade route between Europe and Asia Greek ships frequently traveled through there while transporting cargo from the Mediterranean to its various colonies along the Black Sea coast an international team of maritime archaeologists scientists and marine surveyors from the Black Sea maritime archaeology project or map a three-year endeavor which seeks to explore the sea in detail and measure prehistoric sea level changes made the incredible fine using in deep sea diving robots it's just one of around 60 wrecks the team has found all of which are historically significant there are ships down there that have never been seen apart from in murals and paintings and in books and these are the first time they have been seen since they were afloat Black Sea map CEO Edward Parker told the Guardian number three a long-lost Chappell archaeologists with the auckland project recently discovered the remains of a large medieval chapel that somehow went missing for 370 years in County Durham England known as the BEC chapel it was built during the 14th century for Anthony Beck one of the UK's richest and most powerful prints bishops at the time the two-story addition to Auckland Castle likely fascinated visitors from all walks of life including those who were used to the finer and grander things in life experts believe that the large elaborate Chapel was a testament to Beck's status as one of Europe's most influential men but the structure disappeared in 1642 during the first English Civil War and its location remained obscure until recently when a team of students and volunteers found it and spent five months excavating it they painstakingly unearthed the foundation buttresses walls and part of the floor based on their findings they created detailed drawings of what Beck's Chapel probably looked like during its heyday it's difficult to overstate how significant this building is said John castling the Auckland project's archaeology and social history curator who went on to say that the chapels sheer size would have stunned visitors of all types so how does such a massive structure go missing shortly before its disappearance the chapel unfortunately fell into the hands of a man named Sir Arthur hassel rigged an opponent of Charles the first who demolished it in favor of building a mansion on the site Auckland castle was rebuilt in the 1600s after the monarchy resumed power and the original chapel was lost for nearly the next four centuries were two ancient hominid interbreeding anthropologist and professor Alan Rogers of the University of Utah studies the genomes of hominins or ancient human species he recently led a study to decipher millions of years of human evolution and history by analyzing these DNA strands and looking for genetic patterns like mutations shared genes in doing so he detected five major interbreeding events including one that was previously unknown the research revealed the earliest mixing between ancient humans was roughly seven hundred thousand years ago when a Neanderthal Denisovan ancestor and a group called the super archaic interbred in Eurasia they were more distantly related than any other recorded ancient hominin groups the super archaic diverged from all other hominids around 2 million years ago including the Denisovan Neanderthal ancestors a later mixed with Rogers who led the study said we've never known about this episode of interbreeding and we've never been able to estimate the size of the super archaic population it happened long before humans interbred with Denisovans and the and resolves between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago the events discovery caused scientists to revise their timeline of when humans migrated out of africa and into Eurasia a hotly debated topic in recent years in Rogers words were just shedding light on an interval on human evolutionary history that was previously completely dark number 1 Cleopatra is perfumed Cleopatra is historically known as an extravagant woman who pulled out all the stops when it came to displaying her elegance according to legend she sailed a golden boats covered in purple sales that were coated in a strong fragrance while some tall tales are known to circulate the historical narrative every now and again research indicates that this all might actually be true a 20-19 excavation project in the egyptian city of Timaeus revealed fascinating information about two of the ancient world's most popular perfumes the city found that in 4500 BC hosted the production facilities for the famous sense called Mendes Ian and motoki in' at the site archaeologists discovered kilns dating back to the 3rd century BC glass fragments in jars clan flora and residues of the ingredients used in the perfumes while remnants of the materials may have survived for thousands of years the aromas obviously did not a chemical analysis revealed the perfumes key ingredients including olive oil cinnamon cardamom and Meera Bais a team of researchers led by Robert Lippmann and Jay silverstein of the University of Hawaii recreated one of the scents the substance which would have been much thicker than today's perfumes strong musky and spicy I find it very pleasant though it probably lingers a little longer than modern perfume Whitman said what a thrill it is to smell a perfume that no one has smelled for 2,000 years and one which Cleopatra might have worn thanks for watching which discovery did you like the most would you like to learn more about recent
