as an industry comics contain some of the most heartwarming moments in entertainment history that said where there's a silver lining there must also be a cloud and thus for every heartwarming moment in comics there must also be an equal number of totally messed up moments by comparison i'm ewan this is world culture comics and here are the 10 most messed up moments in dc comics number 10 gross twisting zombies a scene where a corp starts twisting awfully in justice league dark deserves to be in a horror film it's like the clown from it and the xenomorph from alien and the thing from the thing had a baby and that baby was also infused with the worst nightmares you've ever had it's real bad in all fairness it's a testament to the artist's skills that the whole scene appears so entirely messed up each of the grotesque monsters has been made with all the care that good horror games put into their designs and the detail put on moments like a mouth slowly growing away from the rest of her body is monumental and totally nightmare inducing they're all a little bit counteracted by the banter and comedy of the comic for sure but these monsters aren't something you'd want to come across on a dark night or even during the day they're terrible number nine ghost superboy he may have had bad days but you've likely never had a day where your dead loving trash shows up alive starts bleeding from the eyes and face and then turns out to be an illusion made specifically to mess you up this means all your days have at the absolute least been better than wonder girls experience in the 2006 wonder woman comic where dr psycho creates an illusion of her dead boyfriend proving his name awfully accurate what makes the whole thing all the more messed up is that superboy had been canonically dead for a long time before that comic while this would usually clue you in on the fact that said character wasn't actually there the frequency with which heroes return especially major ones makes you initially suspect that it might just be the real deal number eight damien wayne's fate in death of the family sometimes gross out moments are enough to make a comic seriously messed up seeing the child robin trapped amongst a series of dead birds and bugs while the joker plays around with his own skinless face is very much one of these although it isn't breaking new ground in the realm of horror it's all unexpected enough to shock you in the best way possible it's also a moment of horror that very much needed to be had as prior to that the joker's purposefully botched surgery hadn't really been shown in all its nightmare and glory a real high point from scott snyder and greg capilo's batman for sure number seven green lantern's fridged girlfriend even the green lantern comics are generally not renowned for being that hardcore having him discover the dead body of his girlfriend stuffed into a fridge is some seriously seriously dark stuff not only that but the entirety of the murder is also shown in the comic bit by bit it's interspersed with the hero heading back home which is a genius move as you spend half the comic expecting him to save his loved one and then you spend the other half in quiet surprised horror and probably also sighing because killing off a superhero significant other is something of a cliche now and the dewitt murder proved to be the defining moment it entered parody territory especially with the gruesome little fridge-based twist it provided number six cyborg's body problem now let's be honest having a half cyborg body sounds for the most part pretty sweet after all who doesn't want to be the terminator just a little bit or failing that at least inspect a gadget the one downside though is that there's a small chance that these cyborg parts may decide to pull a surprise split from the rest of your body while this is admittedly unlikely it is the gross gross gross gross gross case for cyborg when his robot parts become possessed yep and rip right off him in one of the most viscerally uncomfortable comics pages dc has put out to date that said it also does a very good job at making the whole situation suddenly feel genuinely dangerous having cyborg be brutally injured on page makes it feel as though the heroes are actually in danger meaning that his robocop gone wrong moment is at least justified number five the worst present ever although understated an intensely messed up batman moment comes from the death of robin in 2011's justice league in it batman goes to find his partner only to find a series of presents instead in the shape of the body it's like that bit from seven only about five times worse you can put the pieces together yourself of exactly what hides within them although those pieces may be just as awful in a very literal sense given this plot is used to explain why an alternate universe batman has turned evil it makes sense but it's still an incredibly savage reveal dark universe or not in essence this is a useful reminder that sometimes not revealing details is just as capable of creating a messed up moment as the most bloodthirsty gorfest it may not have the same immediate sense of thrill as a classic bloodbath but in terms of long lasting horror it's definitely on the right track number four the killing joke the killing joke is maybe the single most infamous master moment in comics everything from the awful assault of barbara gordon to the nightmarish fun house ride her father goes on is drenched in horror of the highest degree the format for creating this type of messed up collect plot would be repeated again and again and again over time the most famous of these being the events surrounding sue dibny in the equally master though less adored identity crisis storyline however none of these quite have the impact of the killing joke as there's something about the untamed wildness of the events that make it so much worse and intense than any similar storyline it's also a comic that alan moore has since disowned by the way and while it did lead to giving readers a disabled hero an oracle no one can argue that the path there wasn't fought with misogyny and plain old-fashioned comic sick number three aqua baby's death all fun and talking to seahorses aside aquaman once totally watched his son suffocate to death slowly it's a little more hardcore than you'd expect from an old aquaman comic it is exactly this moment that appears to have solidified black manta as aquaman's archdiocese from this point onwards as the scheme of making aqualad and aquaman fight to death to save the life of his son is some fairly nefarious stuff it results in a dead kid a traumatized aquaman and causes basically the deaths of his mentorship with aqualad and relationship with mira the whole slow drowning process is showed an excruciating detail complete with a lifeless aqua baby depicted in his mother's arms the whole thing kind of makes you wonder how batman became the notoriously edgy one in the justice league and not king arthur curry himself ignoring the whole hook-hand phase he had in the 90s of course number 2. frank miller's sex disasters maybe the most solid proof that frank miller isn't always the soundest comic writer is that he once had superman and wonder woman cause a worldwide disaster by having sex it's almost hilarious how dramatic the sex is in dark night strikes again they destroy mountains and then fall comet like to earth they explode a volcano for god's sake there are literal parody comics that contain less hilarious events not only is the whole thing weird as hell it's also probably the grossest portrayal of the superman wonder woman relationship that still involves them being heroes it downplays the humanity of both while also pigeonholing them into uncaring characters that basically every other comic disagrees with it's not miller's finest moment that's for sure and it's even weirder that the buffy comics decided to copy it in their own series too like just why and number one lois lane's questionable hypnotism with comics you sometimes have to accept that older issues may have heroes doing stuff that's now considered pretty awful as general attitudes towards a whole heap of subjects have changed drastically over time however there are certain events and comics that regardless of when they were written are just creepy as hell for example hypnotizing a child version of your love interest to be in love with you while making them refer to you as auntie is the single most messed up thing imaginable in the comic world or anywhere else yeah this is exactly the role lois legend has in the superman's girlfriend comic also known as the most indescribably uncomfortable comic that human hands have ever made the idea that the whole thing is supposed to be a charming spot of comedy and not one of the most horrifyingly messed up moments in comics history is ludicrously worrying and the fact that at least one writer thought it was a good idea makes it doubly so and those were just some of the ickiest moments in dc history know of any other terrible dc moments you'd prefer the company just straight up forgot spill the beans down in the comments below shut the video a like if you enjoyed it and be sure to subscribe too so you don't miss another upload going forward as always i've been ewing good luck scrubbing the images you've just seen from your eyes and i'll hopefully see you next time bye
