okay starting with rule number one in the beginning of the game take out your knights and bishops and attack towards the center ideal opening is getting one of your pawns in one of the four center squares which are these squares you don't want to push your pawns towards the side of the board but rather develop towards the center your next goal is to take out your knights and your bishops this is what you call development your goal for this is so that you can castle so you make room for your king to castle finish taking out your bishops and your knights and from there you can make a plan to attack this is crucial to do in the very beginning of the game rule number two make sure you castle before you begin attacking and before you make a plan so this is a common mistake that a lot of beginners do they get excited they have trades on the board they want to advance their pieces and they do all this while leaving their king in the middle of the board so this is an example of what not to do in this game white began by trading and they took out their other bishop they traded some more they moved their knights and now their king is starting to get attacked and they're not gonna be able to castle and they're gonna lose material so this was all great play and aggressive play but what you should do first is you should castle that way you make all your worries less alright let's go to rule number three don't push your kingside pawns so this is the game from mr beast actually your king side pawns are the ones that are going to be in front of your king once you castle which in black's case are pretty good white pushed one here to fianchetto which makes sense so that you can develop your bishop h3 is okay i'd say one square at most is okay but a lot of new players do is they over extend their pawns like this normally if you're planning to castle on that side two pawns is way too dangerous and you start creating weak squares like right here the dark squares are weak in this game mr beast continued to push and now he has a huge weakness where he's almost going to lose this pawn and he can't castle king's side anymore since there's so much open room and neither can he castle queen side so now his king is just stuck in the middle of the board but don't push your king's head pawn rule number four don't take your queen out too early in the opening there's no need to take out your queen maybe later in the middle game when you're trying to trade but otherwise make sure you develop your other pieces first so here's an example of what can go wrong even though black is winning two pawns they are not developing any other pieces so if you would actually put a computer here it would be way more than two pawn material advantage for white even though physically they're down pieces this is because they have taken out all their pieces and it's very hard for black to defend when you can't use any of your pieces because you haven't taken any of them out so don't take your queen out too early and this applies to most heavy pieces so that would also include rooks rule number five trade side pawns for center pawns so the center pawns are the ones on the e and the d file on these lines of the board so these four pawns are the center ones the side pawns is anything next to it so the pawns on the f-file and the pawn on the c file here the reason you want to trade your side pawns for the center pawns because now black has two verse one in the center if your center is solid it's really easy to attack and to develop it's also very easy to gain space rule number six continuing the theme about pawns so weak type of pawn structure is called doubled pawns they're exactly what they sound like so here i'm going to make a bad move for white h3 now black can trade off my knight i have to take back with either this pawn or this pawn whatever i do i have a doubled pawn here now this is mainly a weakness sometimes they can be strong but for now i would follow the rule of thumb this is because not only do they create holes they're leaving this pawn undefended but they're really hard to advance because you have to go one at a time and make room for your pawns so unless you're getting some sort of compensation like material you don't want to allow your opponent to double pawn so here if i push e3 instead they take i take with the queen and i don't have an ugly pawn structure rule number six this rule is that rooks like to be on open files and they like being connected what that means exactly so if i played rook b8 with black this is what we call a semi-open file a file is a vertical line on the board so an open file is when there's absolutely no pawns on it a semi-open is one pawn on this file on c8 we would call it a close file because there's more than one there's two pawns for files of the rook the pieces don't matter so bishops rooks queens kings they don't matter only pawns because pawns are less likely to change files unless you're capturing and trading pawns putting the rooks on semi-open files is an easy way to activate them um and here's an example of how you would connect your rooks if i move my queen here they're now defending each other while this doesn't seem like it makes a huge difference because you only moved your queen one square it makes it easier to take out the other rook so now black could maybe bring his rook up and double his rooks now both of his rooks are on the game they're in a semi-open file and they're much stronger so this is the ideal way to develop your rooks of course once you finish your opening development rule number eight when you don't know what to do improve your pieces most beginners when they don't know what to do they start pushing random pawns or they take things because i just don't have a plan so just look at if any of your pieces are badly placed or if you haven't taken them out the entire game and if you can bring them in any better squares so here is an example game white finished developing their bishops they move their queen the pieces they could still improve are the rooks because they haven't moved the entire game so instead of maybe pushing here or pushing here which we can do after we finish improving all our pieces they first improve the rook so rook to this is a closed file but if we trade in the center it's still much better than being on the side of the board next they choose to reroute their queen like this and now their plan is to attack towards the center maybe push here so just doing small moves like this even though it's one square and it doesn't seem like it made a huge difference it does you can do this with knights you can do this with bishops with rooks and queens it's only very minimal but just try to see if you can improve your position before you go to grab a pawn that you don't really know what you're doing rule number nine bishops are better in open positions and knights are better in closed positions so this is a good rule to follow where you don't know whether you should trade your bishop for a night what we can do is you can look at how many pawns are on the board so in this position we call it an open position because white only has a few pawns there's actually no pawns that are still center pawns and i mean it's pretty open here so white has the bishop pair their opponent only has one bishop this is much stronger for white as you can see they're controlling this diagonal they're eyeing the g7 square for a checkmate the light squared bishop is attacking here and because of the bishops working on the longest diagonal the board in an open position you get easy tactics like bishop takes attacking the king giving a check and opening the attack on the queen and getting a tactic like this or you can win the queen this is an example of a strong bishop in an open position okay so here we have an example of a closed position all the pawns are blocking each other so this is why it's closed there's no pawn trades there's not really any way to open up the position the bishop is blocked in by its own pawns can't come here can't come here can't really escape here can't escape anywhere here that's why they're bad in close positions whereas the knight can easily hop over pawns so a possible night maneuver that i would do just to improve my knights i could go to d2 to b1 to a3 it's long but we got all the time in the world to c2 to b4 to a6 to c5 and the final square is a dark squared so we're not going to be able to be attacked by this bishop so since black can't really do anything i'm just going to go back and forth for him and play out this knight maneuver so see how the knight is easily jumping over all the pawns and can utilize all the squares whereas the bishop can't do much so that would be an example of a maneuver you want to bring it somewhere defended by your own pawn outside of the pawns and since your opponent can't do anything you got all the time in the world to move your knight rule number 10 activate your king in the end game so you reach the end game once you start trading most of your pieces a good time to start bringing your king towards the center even a little bit is once the queens are off the board because then you're not really worried about a checkmate so here you can see the difference of having a more active king closer to the central squares rather to a king that didn't move since it castled so now black can easily go inches way up to the white ponds and start capturing and now black is winning this was only because he was closer to the ponds because it was more central so at the end of the game when you don't know what to do just slowly bring your king up it'll make a big difference [Music]
