you can't make it up what do you think happens then after 20 years in Special Operations you've gotta trust me I know my body we're in a world of hurt [Music] the Yucatan Peninsula juts out from the East Coast of Mexico it's a popular spot for vacationers drawn to the Thousand Miles of Shoreline but just around the corner from Paradise lies a thick jungle interior that's home to some of the world's deadliest wildlife beneath the surface of this jungle lies an even greater threat one of the world's deepest concentrations of caves it gets spun around they're very disorienting they can twist and turn and it gets Tighter and Tighter in this scenario Joe and Matt take on the role of two tourists who end up lost in this underground Labyrinth we live tourist Bill and they didn't tell anybody where they're going and now they ended up in this cave lost through all the maze of passageways because it's darker than a this is getting a little spooky yeah he ain't lying dude backpack nice see what we got in this thing eyeglasses prescription I don't know check them out oh yeah that's prescription there's about 10 of you here are Daisy Dukes not myself not a bottle of suntan oil it's actually leaking that's it these guys should have two flashlights and there's not even one in there there's not much to work with here there's no climbing out of here that's not an option the only way I see us getting out of here is exploring one of these tunnels but we can't see in this cave walking around here without a light is definitely a no-go so how do we make a fire we see those glasses in there I'm thinking with this little bit of light that we have coming through the roof we probably focused that sunlight into a sharp point and get a fire started if I can get a flame we'd still need a torch though if I can find a stick cut up the beach towel this might just work let's do it all right next step is to take those eyeglasses and double them up so I'll double up the magnification the trick is going to be to stabilize these I don't know how long it's going to take to ignite it could be 30 seconds or it could be 30 minutes to harness the sun's energy for fire the lens must be convex which refracts rays of light into a focal point where it's concentrated that's really important because I want to have that heat focused in one place [Music] the sun just went behind a cloud if it doesn't come back I'm not going to get this fire going sunlight keeps coming in and out it's starting to come back in again okay we're about ready the lint's going to make a great initial combustion Joe it's really close is that torch ready I just cut the strips I'm going to put some oil on them here in a second the suntan oil acts as an accelerant and an extender which is going to make it burn brighter and longer all right well let's hurry up because I think we're really close swing fingers if this does not light or screwed and the torch is not starting to light straight up a little bit to get some of that floozy all right Matt pack the pack up I'm gonna go look for a way out of here I'll be down there okay move with the purpose dude this way it is dark yeah it is there's a little passageway I see that we ain't gonna fit through there there's no way this cave is very treacherous low ceiling loose rocks I'm looking for light if not light maybe some wind that's blowing through from an outside access point really slippery stuff here bro okay I'm starting to see water that may or may not be a good sign but for right now we're gonna follow it hey Matt yeah come here what's up come here dude is that light from the torch or is that coming from sunlight I'm gonna check this out real quick I could be 100 feet away I don't get too risky right now don't go too far but we're both hoping that that light we see is sunlight and our way out that there is a light source coming from the other side of these rocks what I can't tell is how far away it is do you see the other side no Matt and I have a very big decision to make right now because here's the bottom line we're either going or we're not that's it let's go let's go let's get it done in the event we have to turn around and come back hopefully this torch will still be burning we can find our way out if not you do the math you're underwater in a cave no light what do you think's gonna happen team diving is one of the most dangerous types of Exploration with an average of 10 deaths per year one misplaced touch can dislodge clouds of silt that eliminate all visibility virtually trapping a diver underwater I'm a combat diver but I've never done something like this and this is the bottom line if it goes bad then [Music] oh you okay yeah dude that was a knuckle buster brother oh man I'm just glad to see Blue Sky I was worried about this thing getting caught I was real close it got really tight it was intense yeah I thought no way you're gonna get through there with that fast all right well this is much better well I'm happy because I see jungle and blue sky but it doesn't look like it's gonna be easy to get out of here after being pinched down there in that cave it's such a gift to come up and see the Cenote up here where you got roots that are just coming down they know things our sinkhole caves without a roof filled with water they're connected to underground networks of rivers and lakes that are often contaminated with salt and undrinkable toxins you feel like a sense of being in the jungle but it's not over yet let's go out and check it out come on how's that look uh no matter how you look at it looks like the very top it's going to lean out and do pretty time yeah that's Crux I'm gonna give this a try I feel like it can kind of wedge myself in there you want to go first all right bro give it a shot age before Beauty how come you went out first looking good Matt you look like a monkey looking good I'm at the top of this climb and I'm starting to feel my adrenaline pick up just a little bit but it's time to take a deep breath call myself Focus you just gotta look up and see that blue sky straight at the top of those roots you know it's your salvation nice dude you made that look a little too easy Joe it's amazing up here it's incredible to be up here at the top I've got my feet on the forest floor there's jungle around me I've got trees and I got birds singing songs at me I'm a happy man right now which uh foot it's that crack as much as you can [Music] come here [Music] yeah we made it look at this it's like that is freaking ass over 30 feet down there wow not a place you want to be stuck once I make it out of this hole it's back to business Let's do an accountability of what we have pick a direction and start taking down brush Matt where did you put the glasses at put them right there in the pocket I mean this pocket with a hole in it right here that be the one they're gone did you notice that there was a tear in this thing no it was a dark cave yeah I've packed the eyeglasses I put them in the pocket I didn't realize there was a rip in there you know it was dark we had to get out quickly oh you gotta be kidding Let's it's just glasses no math or not just glasses dude that's how we started fire I can't leave an asset that we have already used to make a Fire Down Below can't do it y'all are up here in the forest that I can start fire with any of these sticks out here Matt no disrespect you but this is the cheapest insurance policy for for a fire right now Joe wants to go in after these little eyeglasses but he has nothing to worry about I'm up here on the jungle floor I feel like I have all the resources I need for us to have fire for us to have food and shelter I'm going back down that's it wait wait if you go back down there and you can't make it up what do you think happens then I hear you but you know what you've got to trust me right now to know after 20 years in Special Operations I know my body if I didn't think I could climb back up there I wouldn't do it if he goes back down there I don't know if he's gonna have the strength to get back up at that point we're in a world of hurt it's not worth it dude there's something sparkling right there I think that's just some reflection I'm not sure if it's the glasses or not but I'm going in I was hoping I'd see it floating in the water do you see anything reflecting it's just a big black hole Joe it looks like a bottomless pit damn that's pretty disappointing knowing that I just came back down here looking for something that is now probably at the bottom of this pit we're starting to lose time I would try to make the climb back out that really sucks like I said I'll be able to make fire up here all right I'm coming back up right on it's looking good my performance is starting to degrade I'm cold my grip strength is starting to give away I'm getting fatigued this is not the place to stop oh I'm glad you did it again all right dude you know what lesson learned I'm relieved to be back on the surface and be back with my partner but I'm pissed that was a bad call we lost the glasses in that damn Cenote so right now he can't get a fire lid we're screwed I just hate making mistakes like that it's just you know it's you know as well as I do it's mistakes that get you killed but it is what it is let's go what direction you want to go let's Head West towards the ocean sounds like a plan now above ground and determined to push towards the coast by following the sun Due West Joe and Matt will have to move away from the salt water-filled Cenote to find a reliable source of hydration I've been a lot of jungles and I can't believe the lack of moisture here I want to check one of these Vines real quick yeah we'll give it a check for sure [Music] it's looking pretty dry that's amazing groundwater in the Yucatan is always scarce and from November through May the dry season depletes the moisture in even the hardiest of succulent plants hey Matt you want to hold up for a second yeah what's up how much farther you want to move today we've come a long ways brother and it's getting late and we still got time for maybe another hour walk bro I don't want to be making a shelter in the dark I can go both ways I agree I don't want to make a shelter at night but I'm also concerned we haven't found water dude it's your call well I'll tell you what there are some spots around here and it seems like there's a bunch of different materials why don't we plan on making a shelter here that works for me but I can tell you this I'm not sleeping on the ground I'm getting eaten alive I've got bites all over me yeah yeah you're getting it already all right well let's get to work man I shelter halfway built I'm thinking with these guys is we'll just watch him up in here [Music] just like that I also grabbed some of these Palms I'm thinking as well for maybe the top I'll get that last perfect yeah I've got an idea for bug protection too I'm gonna go oh good deal that works for me I'm gonna make a glue it's gonna be a protective border out of the sapote tree which has latex just gotta find one [Music] whoa that's a tropical rattlesnake this thing is enormous it's gorgeous it's a dangerous animal I want to respect this beautiful creature it it belongs here I'm a newbie in this Forest it's his home so I'm just gonna go ahead and slowly back away right now I'm used to seeing her rattlesnakes at home the key right now is just to keep eye contact slowly backstep being careful not to kick anything and gracefully walk away from it [Music] this is what I'm looking for right here this is the zapote tree the jungle floor here it's covered in insects so I had this idea that I could take some sap from the zapote tree and get a sticky substance that I can paint around the post of our bed you can already see there's a Milky sap coming out that's the inner cambium this is the part where the tree receives its nutrients yeah look at this thing what do you have there brother I've got some sap from the latex tree out there I'm just gonna paint this around for bug protection oh great idea this looks great good job I love it it's awesome I will believe what I saw just over here there was a tropical rattlesnake it was about four feet long about that big around the most beautiful orangish patterns did you think about killing it it was way too beautiful if you saw you would have you would have known what I'm talking about it was it was gorgeous food source bro you know I'm starving right now we could have whipped up a quick fire and at least nibbled on it looking at that snake it's so gorgeous and I just felt like you know this is our first night here in this jungle I just felt like it would be a respectful honorable thing just to let it be I ran across a rattlesnake once in New Mexico you know what I did I killed it and cut its head off and we ate it you should have killed the damn thing that's food it is food but but dude you made a decision on my behalf too not to take just that particular one I just I just couldn't couldn't do it inside when I enter a new area day one for me is a time to really observe it get to know it I felt like this was a blessing that was brought upon me and I just wanted to watch it I think there'll be opportunities for us to still get some meat and wonder if there's not I don't think one snake's gonna be the difference between us surviving or not I hope you're right Joe has different philosophy than I do rightfully so he came from a background as a warrior my background is out here with nature I don't want to just come here and Crush everything and take from it [Music] I don't see anything I'm looking and I don't see anything I don't know what he's looking at but he is sure he has seen something I've got one shot at this these turkey are incredibly fast talk to me I cut its head off try to be quick and clean soon as I killed the turkey I said a little prayer for it silently oh nice very very nice this will be a nice deal for us I was kind of pissed off at Matt for not killing a snake but all sins are forgiven this is a huge score for us dude that was well done well done [Music] it's starting to open up a little bit out here Joe oh check this out oh wow wow talk about an oasis in the middle of the Jungle finally we find a huge body of water that is a home run for anyone in this situation I'm behind you this is looking really nice Joe wow I don't smell anything nasty it's clear water the clear water is suspect regardless you may not know this about me but I've got a very weak stomach and the last thing I need to be do is dripping diarrhea from one end of this place to the aisle let's play it safe let's try to figure out a way to boil it yeah that was my next thought dude I thought I smelled smoke yeah we got a fire as I find Matt not only does he have a shelter spot he's got a fire going that's a home run in my game what do you got there it's not a lot but I found a dead turtle and I collected some water oh my God that water looks so good right now I mean it smells a little bad but bottom line is this this is gonna work it looks really good right now yeah well let me set this thing down and uh do a good job it's it's been good teamwork yeah man no doubt and that's what this is all about that's right so collectively why don't we get that turkey cooking because I am freaking hungry I don't do this often I'm gonna serve here can I get used to this I don't know but today you earned it man you definitely shine sorry I don't have any silverware at this restaurant you're all right thank you have some turtle water [Music] a new day in the Yucatan brings Joe and Matt renewed hope that they are closer to emerging from the dark canopy of the Jungle and into lands more suited for signaling for rescue right now the terrain is changing starting to get a little bit thinner vegetation a little Greener those are good signs that you're heading towards the coast it's like Mangrove oh yeah I mean Mangrove spells ocean oh man that's a gnarly Mangrove too at the top of my list for terrain that I hate navigating through it is definitely the mangrove [Music] no man there's one thing that all mangroves have in common yeah what's that they all suck if you've never walked through a mangrove let me tell you what it's like it's very very physically tough to get through you're gonna move very slow now we've come across the spot starting to open up a little bit and we're seeing that beautiful blue just stretch across the Horizon and sure enough you just see this beautiful blue stretch of ocean waffle I had my doubts for a little bit man after spending days out in the jungle to Allison come out here and there's no civilization hey come here there's a boat down there there's a guy sitting there hey dude he sees us come on figure of the odds of that happened brother good Lord whatever environment you find yourself in gotta work with it show it respect you gotta learn from it and it'll give you the respect back that is the last thing I expected look at their fishing or something surviving a tough situation means always staying in the fight maintaining A Warrior's mindset stay in the game stay alive [Music] [Music] thank you
