episode of Dual Survival Joe and Cody are isolated amongst endless Dunes in the Arabian desert in Oman we are walking directly into the midday sun and we cannot stop battling against the raw elements of sun sand heat that's a pretty gruesome reminder of how brutal this place is and venomous Predators Cody moves like pond water as it is and now he's going to fiddle around with a lizard that we can't eat right now Joe and Cody will have to follow the ways of Bedouin Nomads in order to survive this desert death tribe [Music] you think that anyone's gonna find you here you're out of your mind the Arabian Desert a vast storied landscape of Sandy dunes and blazing sun covering a million square miles across eight countries for centuries it has been regarded as one of the most inhospitable and uninhabitable environments on the planet when Cody follow in the footsteps of a lone photographer who rode Camelback into the desert to capture its stunning scene it gets bucked off and Stranded when the animal gets spooked hey Cody there's a tripod right here this is one of my favorite pieces of gear for Desert survival period and why is that because I can get out there without moving and I can save calories and water and look at the reflections is it a beer can or is it water so these are worth their weight in gold we've got two camel blankets and a container 64-ounce container of water it's not a lot of water but at least it's water my training is dealing with nothing the more you know the less you need that's Bedouin to a tea you can look at Bedouin cultures and realize they're not out there in shorts and a t-shirt so I'm taking this wrap and I'm covering almost my entire body I want to just get the legs to this tripod what we don't want is an injury from some sort of nonsense like this all it takes is just come in here and just snap it back we've got one walking stick for Joe and we have one for me they're nice to have you know if we end up traveling in the evening it's kind of like the blind man thing right so we can probe an area if we're unsure [Laughter] dude I don't see Jack when we got to the top of the sand and it really hit home about how desolate this area is hold on there's mountains over there for 360 Degrees around there's pretty much just endless flat and endless Dunes but there's a couple pockets of mountains that we might try to head for and I also see there's two trees I see what appears to be two trees that could be a mirage desert's a renowned for producing a phenomenon called a mirage and the more dehydrated you get and the higher your core temperature climbs the more those mirages play tricks in your head if you were to move a great distance to get to a place that you think they're a shade and you get there and there is none you've already dug half your grave need to have some sort of line of sight because as soon as we move out elevation that's going to disappear because that wasn't visible from down there well there is between us and those trees is another small set of Dunes if you can see them right there okay looks like two boobs okay we'll head to the boobs I always like doing that I hear you brother the sun is rising very quickly right now Cody and I cannot dilly dally around we have got to get the hell out of here and find shade then start making the perfect plan I wish I had my trash can lid when I was a kid and I was too poor to afford a sled I mean that guy was some hard to soft quick that's what she said [Music] love leaving cookie crumbs whenever I can I'm not using any energy I'm already moving it took me 10 seconds no harm no foul is a huge relief to finally see that this is indeed two trees thank God these things weren't a mirage Cody it's rugged desert survivors known as Gaff trees can live for centuries in the harshest desert climates by tapping their root system into water tables up to 30 meters underground camel poop dead camel yeah I saw that my vote as we call it the shades okay but it could be a lot better yeah I agree we'll take my wrap and we'll take these camel blankets and we're going to improvise basically a shelter for the both of us so we have the shade of the tree already and if we just use this as velcro like that the primary thing the blankets are doing is simply blocking the solar radiation from the Sun it shouldn't be any surprise that the Bedouin people themselves essentially have tent shelters in the desert so ours is like low end you just lost your job type of shelter for me personally to just sit and do nothing and wait for the sun to go down it's actually quite hard but I know that's the right thing to do but it's not going to be easy for me I always want to be actively doing something to get me out of a situation like this if anyone felt like walking out there they can they can just glance right there yeah and see the reminder yeah that's a pretty gruesome reminder of how brutal this place is we can't stay here indefinitely there's no resources here obviously there's no water I mean there's probably water here but it's probably 100 feet down so it's not an option so we need to move I'm not Bill Gates or Warren Buffett nobody is going to send to Calvary to come see if you think that anyone's gonna find you here you're out of your mind so as hard as it is to leave this shaded spot we cannot stay here we have got to press on and that's a huge risk but it's the only alternative we have [Music] what you up to man I'm picking up poop [Music] for fire I'm gonna make a fire if we find water it's not any potable so I want some compressed fuel there you go all right just checking man I thought you might be losing it out here if I don't have my pocket now you'll have your pants later that's not good thing this area is not survivable so our game plan is to push toward the mountains where there's a greater chance of moisture and a greater chance of resources for our exploitation by the time that sun goes down this Moon's essentially just starting to come up so we're going to have an illuminated way to walk for the majority of the night which is a total bonus for us since ancient times the Bedouin have commonly pitched their tents during the heat of the day reserving travel for night maps of the shifting Sandy landscape would be useless instead Bedouins used the stars for navigation having trekked through the night the sunrise reveals that Joe and Cody are within reach of the mountains but they have completely exhausted their supply of water as Cody and I are moving we can see the sun coming up but now we are in a Race Against Time our water is gone priority number one find water Hey Joe wait up we're heading out toward the fold in those mountains and I look to my right and I see a spiny tailed lizard the locals call it thump I'm gonna sub that's up once I had the Lizard by the tail I flipped it over controlled the head and as quickly and as painlessly as possible Bedouin style I cut its throat oh I gotta process this well we both know we can't eat that right now because we don't have any water I know so I don't know what your plan is Cody but I have a plan okay I have a plan so I'm just gonna go in the shade and I won't take too long because I know we need to make it yeah we need to keep moving dude so make it fast process that as fast as you can well to be perfectly honest Cody does not have the mental and physical endurance that I have he just doesn't and right now he's got that glazed over tired look and that concerns me he moves like pond water as it is and now he's gonna fiddle around with a lizard that we can't eat right now if he takes more than five minutes to do this I am stepping in I'm no stranger to lizards you know from where I live and what I do for a living so we're going to process this out pretty much like any other animal we process out out of all the three macronutrients the proteins carbohydrates and fats proteins use the most metabolic water out of the body to digest them so this is pure protein as far as I'm concerned anyone in a waterless situation it's dubious whether you'd want to eat protein but my plan with this is to get some sticks and I'm going to spread this to do what desert people have done for thousands of years and is to Simply use the desert refrigerator which is drying so we're going to use the sun to our advantage to dry this meat out literally as we gain ground Cody almost done with that thing yeah I'm done all right look I just glassed a canyon straight out in front of us so we need to head that way right now okay I'm gonna grab my stuff sometimes slowing down when it's too hot to go fast is what keeps you alive to move quickly move quick out here and you die quick Joe and Cody have reached the mountains and have entered a type of Canyon known locally as a Wadi with their canteen empty the clock is ticking for them to find water in this dry riverbed before dehydration takes hold man this is a lot more like it Cody we're getting a little bit of green here look at this shade massive amount it's a shade no Joe now that I round this bin I want to go down this Canyon in an ideal world one of us would be point up top and the other would go down this Canyon because the environmentals in the terrain Cody and I have to break survival protocol and split I've got some decent climbing experience behind me but I've never been here and I have not climbed this particular terrain feature so I'm going to do the basics I'm going to keep myself focused and I'm going to get to the top of this thing as fast as I can foreign [Music] there's clouds all in that direction a lot of them is it a deal killer are they just not threatening yet not yet but I'll keep an eye on them that's for sure and well let's call back and forth every once in a while just so we're in contact wow this Canyon that we've been following down just dog legs back and forth and back and forth all I see in 360 degrees is nothing but more rock and more sand that's a pretty big kick in the nuts you know it was not easy getting up here but it's at risk reward at least I know now what Cody and I have to face as we move forward and it's it's pretty ugly walking up on this High Ground is not the answer we've got to stay in the canyon a little bit easier walking and if we get lucky we may find some water I'm coming back I'm gonna link back up with Cody and I hope he's got better news for me than what I'm about to tell him all right here's the deal I made it to this Tower I can see 360 Degrees around I saw where we came from I can see where we're going nothing okay what I will tell you is walking up there is a no-go so it's not quite the Zenith it's still a little bit cool I think we should keep going down the canyon agreed it's the only option we have foreign Cody look that is a beautiful sight oh man when Joe finally sees the pool of water it's like hallelujah it's a huge score we may be able to get down but getting up may be a little bit different so just hold on a second it's totally vertical over here yep and over there there's actually an overhang we've got to figure out a way to get some water well if you get down there and you can't get back up that kind of defeats the point yeah so that's not an option for us to do we need the water but the risk of me climbing down there is too much oh that's what I don't want you to do this thing's so damn slick you could actually taste the water it is so close to you but in a situation like this stay focused and keep your head in the game build this thing make it the right way then use it the last thing Cody and I need is for this thing to go in the water so I made a little Loop here on the top to hold it and then I've crisscrossed the bottom of it the best I can but if I throw it in the water I don't know if it's going to sink so I'm thinking about putting a rock or two in here just to get it some weight oh thank you it's not sinking which is not good I'm really shocked because I put four decent sized rocks in there and it's still floating it's still funny oh yeah there we go it finally sinks below the water line and I see bubbles very happy [Music] don't do this to me now [Music] oh yeah that is what I am talking about right there this is a game changer for Cody Knight game changer oh poop and it's just compressed cellulose and lignin the main components of wood products so essentially it's like a fuel tablet so the better when you use this all the time and they'd feel their fires up with this I'm going to powder it down so I can have the pieces small enough to literally ignite and burn like an ember I'm creating some surface area on this nice warm Rock and we'll get this all nice and dry the more surface area you can get on this the better there's still a bunch of clouds but there's Pockets how long you've been trying for 10-15 minutes without fire we cannot disinfect this water we got wide open sun right now dude few sun I'm getting a little bit of smoke several years back I was in a situation where I had to drink some water out of a stream and it looked clean I spent two weeks in the hospital and almost died from it come on there we go there we go here it comes [Music] and there we go if you did get sick out here from drinking bad water you do risk dying because you dehydrate from the inside out with diarrhea here it comes finally Cody gets a break he gets an ember he's got a fire going that is great all we're gonna do from this point forward is to drink water and super hydrate this round's ready so I'm going to pull it off I'm gonna let it cool [Music] Cody and I are not going anywhere right now we are going to drink water and we're gonna eat a little bit and we're gonna rest and recharge our batteries and here I just sample [Music] [Music] what do you think is it done [Music] it's like chicken no but calories are calories right now for anyone in this situation having water to drink having something to eat and having a place to bed down at night is a grand slam home run thank you survival protocol says follow water out and that's exactly what we're going to do we're going to follow this water for as far as we can and hopefully come across somebody or civilization thank you this Canyon is getting very narrow literally as wide as our arms are apart so we're going to jump in the water and Wade through this stuff and I'll tell you what it's going to feel great this almost seems like a really mean illusion that all of a sudden we're literally over our head and water with abundance and I'm thinking in the back of my head how long is this going to really last all right where there's water there's people [Music] so much for the water Cody I know this is gone it's almost tempting to turn back it's not an option [Music] see that rock wall right there that looks man-made to me Cody it is an animated it might be a thousand years ago but yeah let's keep going as you reach the end of the SWAT into this flat Valley I see a ruin so is it a civilization that was here a thousand years ago or is there a town right around the corner we don't know Cody come here oh my God those are buildings yeah it's a whole town wow yep when we round the corner there it is there's an entire town right there in view as beautiful as the Arabian Desert is it's still a killer the most common ways to die out here are hyperthermia and dehydration so always leave a game plan before you travel and always carry your water [Music]
