[Music] this time I head into remote hostile jungle it's an absolute nightmare in search of a bizarre circular Lake in the world's largest rainforest getting there it's gonna be one hell of an adventure today is not my day today Brazil home of the Amazon rainforest [Music] this is where I found my next Target the thing that's an anomaly for me is the color of the water it just stands out as being odd it's mysterious in my years trekking through the Amazon rainforest I've never seen a lake with such a vivid blue color that is intriguing the Blue Lake is over 120 kilometers from any known road but it is close to an indigenous jungle Village it's always a terrifying going into this sort of area because I don't know how contacted these people are I don't know whether they're friendly whether they'll allow me to access this bit of jungle and I leave tomorrow this is exciting that was the last time I was in the Amazon we're going home from London it's three flights thank you mate covering 10 000 kilometers and taking me into the heart of Brazil immediately I stepped foot off the plane it's very noticeably human kilometers North along the course of a major tributary of the Amazon that passes close to town first things first taxi I'm hoping I can remember enough Portuguese to get me a car into town and change some cash what I can find out from locals about this place could be the key to making my mission a success it's soon clear that changing currency is not the only service that's being offered here at the back of this money exchange place would appeared to be a place where they buy and sell gold gold it's everywhere in the Amazon I've got a hunch that the miners Get Around by river that's got to be my best way into the jungle I'm told the man I need to see goes by the name of the general this could be a ticket into the jungle okay on our way to what I think is going to be a gold Cooperative which will hopefully land me on a gold mining boat that takes me further into the rainforest hello the general is one of a small army of Prospectors who have been processing and selling gold from the Amazon for over 40 years so I want to get as much Intel as possible from his jungle knowledge is perfect this is a longer way that basically we are taking this to avoid the to enter the Indian Land encouragement by Miners and ranchers has seen an escalation of clashes with the indigenous people who live in the forest once they are in their land they could get either curious or aggressive so I call the National Organization for indigenous amazonians to get clearance before entering their land in terms of the intricate negotiations with indigenous people hopefully I've got someone on board who can help me I'll have to wait until tomorrow until I find out whether I've got permission to Trek into the target area come as far as we can by Road I'm about to go by boat to Jose's mining operation as Forest without the okay of the indigenous population just isn't an option proulia said the last time he went into an indigenous Reserve without gonna get permission so the last thing we want to do is cause an incident here we've reached the General's raft just one of the many dredgers whose miners scour the riverbed for gold with lead weighted boats breathing air through a hose pipe on the bottom of this not exactly crystal clear water trying to suck up sleds to get gold Beyond those boats there's Indian Territory and it's our bank until I get permission to access the jungle I'm stuck on this barge well I can't quite believe at the moment is that oh man this is still down there pitch dark 15 meters down the ships will just keep going all nice if you get stuck down the bottom though and they took on a pipe and there's no answer they just cut the pipe and you're left they don't even look that is pretty ruthless okay it was uneasy coming into the rainforest and a gold dredger but what I've seen is a way of life that's unquestionably tough and strangely gripping it's a first name way of life clearly these guys do put their lives at risk there is a bit of me and I don't know whether it is somewhat Reckless but I want to um I want to experience what that's like pretty blue just don't understand 200 meters from here where these qualities are is the indigenous Reserve now I'm waiting on a satellite phone call in order to know whether I'm allowed to go in there and access it until I get the all clear I'm stuck on board drawn deeper into the extreme world of these men and their Lust For Gold I feel well and good coming in filming it but I want to come in and experience it I volunteered to work a shift as a diver thank you I'm about to go down into zero visibility breathing air is being made by a tractor engine and I can't swim wow it's just like another world what a life these guys live it really is extraordinary the risks that they take day in day out quite adrenaline is absolutely he said I've got lots of Courage I don't know I think I'm just a stupid person it's time to find out if I've been given clearance to continue my mission everything rides on this phone call we're really Keen to know whether we've got permission to enter the reserve yet [Music] we haven't can we can you confirm that we we have not got permission no no all right cheers we've not got permission to go in [Music] I didn't think that was going to happen it's three tribes and we talked all three of them they've all said no we can't go in so it's not just even the legal threat of being arrested or being fined it's actually angry indigenous people and then we had even the rigs to be killed thank you [Music] this is a crushing blow but it seems that browlio knows of another equally mysterious Lake you see this point here very circular remote from nowhere not even close to a river it's possible is a similar feature isn't it it's not indigenous no it's a harder written but what it does mean is that I can access it without going across indigenous territory as much as I'm gutted that's what I'm gonna do my original Target may be off limits but 140 kilometers to the southeast we've identified a strikingly similar disc shaped Lake and it looks even harder to reach the next Target could be a big believer in fate people think to be an Explorer you need to be superhuman Super Turf it's not that at all it's more of an ability to stay positive stay motivated because in Expeditions everything always goes wrong no plan survives any Journey really thank you foreign [Music] we've reached the best point on the river for me to begin my Trek towards the new Target big beach here which is quite Pleasant I'd say would appear to make a good cam show given the extreme conditions and thick forest I've decided to set off tomorrow alone I'm just gonna enjoy my last night with the last one I've got one I've got one is a black piranha look at that what I seen on the Saturday marble when we were Rich it is a type of dry forest like a savannah yeah it is thorny scrubs indeed I know there's no anybody who had crossed that like water is the worry without a shadow down today I set off on a 12 kilometer jungle Trek with the heaviest pack I've ever carried on an expedition this five liters of water drum has to go upright has to go in the main compartment That's Heavy and this is over half my body weight but we think this is going to be fairly unpleasant thank you for everything cheers bye-bye okay here my target is around 12 kilometers away across unmapped terrain with no way of knowing what's beneath the jungle canopy a lot of the species of snakes here are semi-arboreal which means they live in the trees and they curl themselves around the branches with search camouflage that you just can't see them so you've got to tune in to looking at things that are just within Striking Distance to see whether it's moving and it's usually the movement that gives a snake away let's see what I swear to get out every single hour I'm gonna already start to rush in the water all right I just honestly want to drink every single drop of that bottle I've covered only two kilometers but drunk nearly half of my water supply with my target still 10 kilometers away it's an absolute nightmare it's not a jungle it's just thick scrub hopefully this will change it's all the same this is Woody stuff it's so hot there is no canopy anymore and yet the foliage is horrific I'm gonna try only 600 meters in this hour I'm gonna fly I can feel it I'm Gonna Fly very soon I've been boosting myself to get across this Lake it's not gonna happen it's just too far away and I am um utterly utterly exhausted today was a full full walking day but I couldn't have done any more [Music] um good morning you can see it's just sort of Woody scrub outside the hammock the Woody screw up I hate this Woody's grub get out of your bed all right so open five breakfast no I met who is there trying my hats out by the fire and uh I don't have a hat anymore it's a shame once the temperatures hit 37 degrees but it's the extreme humidity that's the real enemy okay it started to get too hot so I'm just gonna tie my another t-shirt on my head look like something out of a nativity play the only thing I cannot afford to do let's get heat stroke and it is obviously fatal completely and utterly fatal you're all going to stop working and you just die and I'm going to die here and now today today is not my day today look at this let's hear [Applause] there's a wild pineapple absolutely amazing there is some flesh there is an amazing it's juicy and it's sweet and it contains water and it tastes delicious and another one these things were almost quite literally a lifesaver walking into this canopy is so much easier hardly having to use my machete at all no sooner than I set out we've reached an area where it's really quite watery lack of water is no longer my problem okay immediately this is becoming swampy not just a bit of a puddle this is more like the jungle I know this is more like the Amazon wet more Palms majorly recognizable this rainforest and how beautiful is that a flowing jungle stream this is proper jungle little streams I can dump all that extra water that I was carrying I am absolutely loving this this is my playground this is this is where I feel the most alive in the whole world I could almost cry I absolutely love the Amazon rainforest the vegetation change is getting a much more aquatic type of leaf and the ground also it's almost like a flooded Forest because there's some parts of the year it's underwater the natural groundwater would fill any depression in the forest floor leading me to wonder if the lake was created after a meteor strike in this pristine jungle [Music] they're like spider monkeys to me why do monkeys are Territorial and known to throw their feces down to the ground as a warning white face we've got Blacksburg they seem threatened by my presence they're looking straight at me and they're shaking the tree you'll see what needs to scare me that's really cool I like it here mid-afternoon I'm gonna make Camp here because I've got beautiful clear crystal water good morning It's a Jungle on there I'm excited I'm genuinely excited about what I'm gonna find soon the ground appears to be sloping away from me and up ahead the light is piercing Through the Jungle canopy it means there's a gap in the trees and I think that's the lake I can see water glimmering down here I've got there wow it's extraordinary it's like sunken that water there must be 10 meters down it's like it's in a big crate [Music] that is a beautiful still Emerald Lake that's not the color of any light that I've ever been to in the Amazon wow [Music] now I want to see it properly this expanse of strange green water is maybe a kilometer or so in diameter there's the lake it's quite remarkable really to be sitting here on the Target right now wow there's something big I can see it swimming around is there something extraordinarily big in this Lake this Lake would make an ideal hunting ground for a versatile Predator like a caiman [Music] wow it seems like the sort of Rim around the lake that this is actually a meteor crash site this vast Lake could be living evidence of an ancient meteor strike its violent impact leaving behind a disc shaped crater which naturally filled with water over time but whatever the cause of this Lake there's only one way to truly experience it ha ha now I want to evidence my target from above quadcopter into the middle of the lake to get a shot she has to be able to match it up with the satellite imagery foreign this lake is an untouched natural wonder this is my treasure this is my Jungle Gold yes those are the most amazing shots I'm really hoping that these images are going to be able to shed some light as to what caused this leg what made it this was a mission to go in and find out what this round circular Lake in the middle of the Jungle what caused it and the answer is people know very very little what an amazing place what a special place when you're sitting on a back raft on a lake like this nothing really seems to matter anymore I still don't know what made these two disc shaped legs but I have heard about another Lake of this size recently discovered elsewhere in the Amazon that's suspected to have been formed by debris from an air burst meteor that hit the Amazon nearly a century ago
