stop buying bad gpus let's get you the best GPU for gaming 2024 welcome back to PC Builder I'm Jason picking the best GPU for gaming 2024 can feel really confusing today we're going to cover everything that you need to know to get the best graphics card for gaming in 2024 including GPU features like dlss versus FSR frame generation rate tracing how much vrm your GPU needs AMD versus Nvidia versus Intel gpus as well as reviewing the best GPU for 1440p gaming 4K gaming and 1080p gaming right now and we'll tell you which gpus to absolutely avoid in 2024 if you get value out of the let's start with GPU vram because a lot of new game releases since early 2023 have shown that vram can be more important than just looking at average FPS now vram it's the amount of RAM on your GPU and that's different from the system RAM and the only way to increase it is to buy it a new GPU with more vram games like Allen wake 2 the Las ofus part 1 Hogwarts Legacy and others have shown that 8 GB of vram once considered a safe amount for gaming just doesn't cut it in 2024 even for some games at 1080p let alone 1440p or 4K now depending on the game when it runs out of vram you'll either get a stuttery mess like in The Last of Us Part One or recently some games now just stop loading high quality textures so while the game doesn't stutter it looks terrible despite having good FPS numbers taking a quick look at the vram testing by Tech PowerUp on the Allen wake 2 game at release it gives us a picture of what future Graphics intensive games may require particularly if you want to play around the release date now even at 1080p maximum settings the game exceeded 10 GB of vram at 1440p the game pushed towards the 12 GB vram buffer of many cards and at 4K exceeded 12 GB of vram so sorry 470 super 12 GB of course turning on features like rate tracing path tracing and even frame generation more on all those in just a bit also increases vram usage turning on rate tracing even at 1080p already exceeded 12 GB of vram knocking out a lot of gpus even some that just launched this year turning on path tracing adds additional vram usage at every resolution and frame generation it adds even more vram usage so how much vram do you need in 2024 at this point 8 gbes is the absolute minimum even for Ultra budget Gamers as that is going to require you to turn down settings and textures on some graphically intense new release titles the minimum no compromised 1080p gpus should be at least 12 GB for 1440p Focus purely on rasterized performance so no high-end rate tracing for instance 12 GB is the minimum but Gamers should consider getting 16 GB if they can for 4K gaming or 1440p at ultra settings with ultra Ray tracing I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice getting less than 16 GB of vram so what gpus on the market right now should you consider in 2024 well well for those looking to play at 4K across a wide range of titles starting at the top and working down on the Nvidia side we have the RTX 490 the RTX 480 super and 480 and the RTX 470 TI super all with 16 GB of vram or more on the AMD side we have the 7900 XTX 24 GB and 7900 XT 20 GB gpus which perform on par with a 480 super and 470 TI super respectively for used gpus you can also consider the Radeon RX 6900 XD 69 50 XT and nvidia's RTX 390 and 390 TI for those looking to play at 1440p across a wide range of titles starting at the top and working down on the Nvidia side we have the RTX 470 super and RTX 470 both with 12 gigs of vram and the RTX 46 GTI 16 GB as well as the RTX 36g 12 GB GPU on the New Market on the AMD side we have the RX 7800 XT 16 GB the 7700 XT 12 GB and the 7600 XT 16 GB GPU use you also may be able to find some last generation gpus like the RX 6800 XT 16 GB the 6800 non-xt 16 GB or the RX 6700 XT 6750 XT with 12 gigs of vram as well Intel also currently offers the arc a770 16 GB GPU on the used Market there's also nvidia's RTX 380 12 GB and 3080 TI 12 GB as well as the Ron RX 6000 series gpus we just mentioned for 1080p no compromises gaming we primarily have the same lower level gpus as we just mentioned for 1440p as well as a lot of used gpus with at least 10 GB of vram like the RX 6700 non XT the RTX 2080 TI 11 GB and RTX 1080 TI 11 GB for gpus with only 8 gigs of vram on the new market we have the Nvidia RTX 460 TI 8 GB the RTX 46 8 GB and the older RTX 350 8 GB on the AMD radon side we have the RX 7600 8 GB and the previous generation RX 6600 XT 6650 XT and RX 6600 non-xt all with 8 GB of vram Intel also offers the arc a770 8 GB a750 8 GB and a580 8 GB we also have far too many used 8 GB gpus to mention them all let's also talk about the gpus that you should absolutely avoid well AMD and Nvidia still offer cheaper brand new gpus that have less than 8 gigs of vram like the RTX 26d 6 GB or 4 GB RX 6500 XT I would absolutely avoid these gpus in 2024 and instead just grab something with at least 8 gigb or larger vram or consider many of the very good options on the used Market there's also just a number of gpus where the performance is just too low to really consider like the Intel Arc A380 and just say no to those GTX 1650s RX 560s and trash tier GT 1030s let's talk about the differences between Nvidia versus AMD versus Intel gpus I'm happy to say that in 2024 all three companies make competitive gpus for gaming though Intel drivers they're still not to the level of AMD and Nvidia so Gamers with an Intel GPU they often have to wait to play new onree titles Intel gpus also require at least occasional trouble shooting but Intel is rapidly improving and we expect their next Generation battlemage gpus to launch this year in 2024 outside of the budget segment your options basically boil down to AMD versus Nvidia gpus one thing to keep in mind is that some games for whatever reason seem to perform better on either AMD or Nvidia gpus so if you really focus on Modern Warfare 3 you'll probably want to get an AMD rown GPU as they perform significantly better than their Nvidia competitors well a game like fortnite seems to have at least a slight preference for NVIDIA gpus so if you're focused on one or just a handful of games it really does pay to check benchmarks for those games then of course we've got all the extra features all three GPU companies have upscaling Technologies like nvidia's dlss amd's FSR and Intel's xss which will boost FPS in supported games now these Technologies work by having the GPU render the game at a lower resolution which is easier for the GPU than the upscaler interpolates that image into an upscaled image of higher resolution well FSR and dlss were initially pushed as technologies that would allow older and lower performance gpus to keep up at 1080P and 1440p the reality is that they don't work very well at those resolutions because the native image rendered it's just so low quality and there just isn't much boost to frame rates at those resolutions instead these Technologies shine at 4K where they can render the image at a higher quality but not quite 4K and then upscale that to 4K at 4K dlss is slightly Superior to FSR in terms of image quality and probably always will be as long as FSR is a software only tool without dedicated Hardware support like DSS has but both technologies have come a long way and at least in my opinion both look quite good at 4K then we have frame generation Technologies for both AMD and Nvidia which are still controversial now frame generation looks at both the current frame and the previous frame and generates an in between frame in order to smooth out frame rates this does add latency because it essentially holds the current frame while inserting a fake frame in front of it additionally this process can also consume quite a bit of vram well both AMD and Nvidia have tried to sell frame generation Technologies as increasing FPS most tech Outlets including me disagree and instead describe them as frame smoothing Technologies in particular since they add latency I would not recommend using them in any game where reaction time is important like competitive shooters or even single player games like Jedi Survivor next we have rate tracing which can give images a more lifelike effect of light and or fles modeling but still comes at a significant cost in terms of much lower average FPS as well as increased vram usage on weaker Hardware this can result in console like low FPS experience even using dlss as an alternative rather than turning on rate tra tracing you can simply turn up the resolution from 1080p to 1440p to 4K and often get significantly better visuals and better fps performance that's why I generally only recommend R tracing enthusiasts to use either 1440p but more often 4K and I currently consider the minimum GPU that I would recommend to somebody who considers themselves a ray tracing Enthusiast the RTX 470 TI super 16 GB or the RX 7900 XT 20 GB Nvidia does have quite a substantial lead in rate tracing don't amd's RX 7000 series were much improved and about on par with the RTX 3000 Series in terms of average rate tracing performance when we recently pulled our audience on raate tracing only 14% said that raate tracing is important enough to them to give up some FPS or spend a little more and only 3% says we're spending significantly more money we're giving up a lot of fps to get better rate tracing performance that's actually declined in support for rate tracing from our poll in the previous year if you want to capture your gameplay or stream it to a service like twitch or YouTube gaming I'm happy to report the video encoding for all three brands it's now excellent note that if you want av1 encoding you want to grab an AMD radiant RX 7000 series Nidia RTX 4000 series or Intel Arc a series GPU while they don't have av1 encoding the RTX 3000 Series and RX 6000 series of gpus are also quite good at the time of filming av1 encoding still doesn't have widespread support So as an alternative for AMD gpus I'd use h.265 hvc option as it has better quality and Nvidia gpus seem to do best on h.264 using the nank encoder if you really want to get into streaming my recommendation is to go up one additional GPU tier for the resolution that you're looking to play at now for those looking to use video editing or other creater applications the good news is at the level of most consumers out there there really isn't a big difference between Nvidia versus AMD versus Intel except for blender where Nvidia holds a sizable Advantage but if you're using Adobe Premiere or to vent you resolve for video editing there really isn't much of a difference anymore although it always pays to review the specific software that you intend to use as some more Niche professional applications May differ let's talk about Nvidia g-sync versus AMD freesync now this is called variable refresh rate or vrr the technology that prevents screen tearing and any modern gaming monitor should come equipped with either AMD free sync or Nvidia g-sync note the newer HDMI 2.1 monitors also offer vrr over HDMI 2.1 any of the gpus we've discussed will work with either technology including Arc gpus note that AMD free sync is by far the more widely available technology on gaming monitors for PC gaming to ensure maximum frame rates especially for the newer 240 HZ and higher refresh rate 1440p and 4K monitors you should always use the display port cable rather than the HDMI one let's talk GPU models and brand names does it make a difference if you buy a cheaper version of a GPU like an RTX 4070 or should you spend more money on a more expensive version there are actually differences between the gpus offered by add and board Partners called aibs for sure like gigabyte MSI Asus and others even within the same GPU model family AMD and Nvidia specify the base specs for every GPU and that includes the thermal design power or TDP which is the wattage of the card the other thing that's specified is the base and boost frequencies now aibs can create models that increase the TDP and or apply a factory overclock to the GPU as well as designing the cooler itself but the reality is that except for the ultra high-end gpus most gpus perform within 5% of the base models buying the cheap keep his next model up so in this case the RTX 4070 super is always going to give you better performance so it's okay to spend a little more on a model with better RGB perhaps quieter fans don't overspend to the point you could have bought a higher performance GPU at the high end of gpus we do see more extreme differences with heavily overclocked or water cooled gpus so you can decide of spending a bit extra on an RTX 4090 RX 7900 XTX or RTX 480 super makes sense for you so what's the best gaming GPU 2024 well let's compare FPS performance we're going to go Nvidia versus AMD versus Intel to get the best price performance gpus at 1080p at 1440p and 4K remember links for all the new gpus in this video are down in the video description so you can check out current pricing and availability because GPU Market is getting cheaper right now so using gaming benchmarks I've listed out the relative performance of currently available gpus both used and new ones and we've normalized this to an RTX 3060 which currently will give you about 60 FPS experience at 1440p across a wide range of titles on high settings we're going to use this as a rough metric to compare GPU performance and we're also going to compare vram capacity and establish our criteria for 1440p and for caming gpus as well of course this spreadsheet is linked down in the video description check it out this is the same one that we go through our monthly GPU market update so check that out as well but this is the first time this year that we've used our new criteria let's jump to the best Ultra budget gpus so this less than $150 is a new category for us we're not going to spend a lot of time here because primarily it's used options right now but if you're looking to build an ultra budget gaming PC out there I really like the GTX 1070 about 100 bucks it's got 8 gigs of vram still pretty good 1080p levels of performance equal in performance to the old GTX 1660 super but that only has six gigs so I would get this instead if you want to spend a little bit more money you know I had been recommending like the 5700 XT unfortunately the price of that card has gone up and up and up it looks like we're selling out through on those so I would go GTX 1070 otherwise I would jump to our next category jumping over our best GPU under $250 again this used to be under $200 a little bit of inflation and we're just going to filter out to new cards I think this is going to be kind of interesting for those of you looking to put together a budget gaming PC with all new parts out there but again uh the cards here are limited primarily to 8 gab of vram until you get to about $300 let's quickly punch through them if you're willing to put up with a little bit of troubleshooting I do like the arc gpus out there the arc a750 right now back down to $189 I think that's two thumbs up there really do like it and Intel did just release a Big Driver update a couple days before I filmed this and again massively increased some of the uh some of the game performance AR Arc a580 kind of not as compelling for only $10 less less performance I'd go with the a750 but if you don't want to put up with any of that the RX 6600 has just been a real go-to up a little bit to 199 I don't love it love it at that price but again if you're cash limited that's probably the one to pick up if you've got a little bit more money to spend sure you pick up the 6600 XT 6650 XT do get quite a bit more performance but you're getting so close to those higher vram cards I would probably spend a little bit more money and go up or just save that money and spend it somewhere else let's jump into the best 1440p GPU 2024 and honestly it's also the best 1080p GPU in 2024 because the criteria are basically the same which is 12 gigs of more vram and at least the score of an RTX 36d 12 GB GPU which will give you about 60 FPS at 1440p across a wide range of titles obviously easier to run games you're going to get way more FPS than that but this will give you some gauge in terms of where these cards Rank and the market out there it's pretty varied right now this is the top 15 cards including current pricing right now as I'm filming this you'll notice some cards don't even appear in the top 15 because they're listed by price to Performance like the RTX 460 TI 16 gab the card doesn't even make the list that's how terrible of value that card is right now definitely need huge price cuts out there we'll start up at $500 and work our way down if you got about 500 bucks to spend there's really no getting away from the 7800 XT it's a phenomenal value it's got 16 gigs of vram it's going to give you fantastic performance and this is a level where I'm not really going to consider dlss or R tracing or any of those other quote unquote features because these cards frankly are not powerful enough to do that I'd rather turn up the resolution than turn on those features instead and you're not going to get much out of dlss or any upscaling really at 1440p let alone 1080p of course I know it's a small bump but it's not something that I would spend a lot of extra money for its competition is either the RTX 470 or the 470 super I'm not a big fan of the 4070 super the problem with the 4070 was not the performance of the card it was the 12 gigs of vram and they're going to charge you 50 bucks more actually even more than that because the 407s are going for much cheaper now more like 530 bucks it just doesn't make any sense if you want Nvidia I would probably still pick up the 470 for 534 it's just hard to buy a card with only 12 gigs of vram for over $500 let alone $600 right now in 2024 going down from there if you're looking for a card more around that kind of $350 price point I I have loved the 6700 6750 XT out there for $300 now at 340 and I noticed a lot of those models completely Vanishing off the market it looks like AMD may be shipping the rest of those off to China well it forces you to buy the 7600 XT not a phenomenal value out there for $329 I'd love to see the price on that that GPU come down cuz it's not a bad GPU but it's terrible pricing if you don't mind the Intel you know driver stuff the Intel RC a770 right now the cheapest 16 gig GPU out there for $299 again not super powerful but powerful enough to play a lot of games at 1440p slightly more powerful than the RTX 3060 12 gab and then from there it just it does get to be a little bit of a mess in between there are cards out there that could be good values like the 7700 XT but they're terrible pricing same with the 4 60 TI if those cards come down significantly then you can definitely consider them otherwise right now I'm kind of oscillating be between either the 6700 6750 XT if you can find it possibly the 7600 XT but otherwise just I would pull the trigger on a 7800 XT 16 gigabyte for just about 500 bucks jumping over the best 1440p 240 HZ GPU so again not all titles can do 240 htz out there but where you can especially in competitive Shooters these are the gpus that I would focus on and this is where the the GPU has a score of 180 or greater so basically 80% more performance than an RTX 360 12 GB and it still has 12 gigs or more vram we've already talked about the 7800 XT I think that's a phenomenal value out there if you want to pick one up for right around $500 jumping up in the performance a little bit though if we RX 7900 XT right around 725 and that price seems to be holding they had gotten down to about $710 but the $720 price does seem to be holding we'll see for how much longer and then you know possibly the 4070 TI super for just about 70 bucks more the 4070 TI super of course that is a strong enough card to look at dlss and R tracing at 4K so if you're also interested in 4k we'll talk about that in just a moment that card I think does become a really really compelling option I know a lot of reviewers didn't like that card like no real performance difference for the 4070 TI but honestly the 16 gigs makes all the world to me at least to me and then you know in terms of the other cards this is only a top 10 here the 7900 XTX the r TX 480 super would be right under it we'll talk more about those cards in the 4K section but those are the cards I really like for 1440p 240 HZ let's jump up to the best 4K GPU 2024 and this is where the GPU score is 200 or higher and it's got 16 gigs or more vram now note that we've listed these out by rasterized Price performance this is just raw FPS if features like dlss and Ray tracing are important to you this is one area to look at especially as we get to the higher performance cards up there and you can determine how much more you want to adjust in terms of the performance of these cards so some of these Nvidia cards that are more expensive might become more valuable in fact I'm going to recommend one of them this might shock you let's start off with the 470 TI super right now because the 7800 XT it's about good for about 60 FPS at 4K wouldn't necessarily buy it there but if that's what you're looking for still a good value at about $500 but let's take a look at the card that I really like here which is the RTX 470 TI super for about $800 now listen to me this is what the RTX 480 really should have been at launch in fact they were going to call it the 480 12 gab initially and they basically now dropped what is the 480 down into the 470 TI super kind of body and it's got 16 gigs of vram not a lot more performance than the 470 TI 12 gigabyte in terms of rasterized performance but the 16 gigs of vram makes to me all the difference I really do like that card 7900 XT if you're primarily going to play at 1440p push a lot of frames or you you play games that are dominated by AMD radon like you know Modern Warfare 3 something like that that card makes sense but if not I I think the $70 price premium is uh one that I would gladly pay to get the RTX 470 TI super 16 gbes I don't think the 16 versus 20 gbes is going to be that big a deal in the next couple years certainly probably in the useful lifetime of these cards then of course I while I do like the 7900 XTX closer to 900 940 still not cheap enough for me I like the 4080 super yes the cheapest model I can find right now is $1,029 now it did just come out I do expect fingers crossed we'll see some MSRP 999 models but $30 is not a lot more to pay over the MSRP when we're talking about a ,000 GPU and the 480 super it's got uh better in terms of its overall power usage it's got similar rasterized performance to the XTX and it's got better rate tracing and dlss is is kind of a factor here I'd love to see AMD slash prices and maybe they will in the near future but until they do I got to say the 480 super is probably my top pick right now in that kind of under the exactly $11,000 GPU and obviously everybody knows the 490 if you got all the monies and you want all the performances you get the RTX 490 that car does not have to subsist on price to Performance it just subsists on performance and the fact that it's pretty far above both the 480 super and the 7900 XTX across all titles obviously there are some titles like I said Modern Warfare 3 where the 7900 XTX does come close to a 490 but comes close the 490 still beats it so you can pretty much be guaranteed if you're going to plunk down about two grand you're going to get the card that's going to beat
