on this episode of Dual Survival we could get hit right now right here in the spot Joe and Matt are isolated in the Towering Andes mountains of South America where limited visibility we're getting blasted by a cold wet windy weather and high altitude we're at 15 000 feet if you fall from here if you're not dead you're gonna wish you were make fire the Sun have you ever heard that old saying where there's smoke there's fire [ __ ] South America's Andes mountains in Peru dramatic Peaks reach upwards of 19 000 feet the Eastern slopes lead down into the Amazon basin but to the West icy peaks dropped to Tropical jungle in this scenario a pair of archaeologists Venture High into the mountains in search of undiscovered Treasures but when bad weather rolls in they try to find shelter and get lost in the fog-covered Peaks something on the Rocks over there there's what appears to be a backpack or a jacket sitting on this old rock wall Tinkerbell in there yeah it's at Stakes whisk broom that's for for clean in there yep they're special effects exactly it's like a specimen jar or something sifter God looks like they took a little tumble at some point wine well we're probably not going to repel down a cliff no snares you just have to tie up the shelter with the Poncho yeah it'll come in handy toothpaste cocoa leaves cocoa leaves traditionally the peruvians use coca leaves for high altitudes so we could sit down and start chewing on those if we need to well that's it that's all we've got Joe and I got a pretty good head start with the supplies that we have in the backpack but there's probably not going to be a lot of good shelter immediately in the areas I don't give a damn about food water and shelter right now our priority needs to be drop in elevation at least to 12 000 feet you good with that yeah Joe and Matt are at an altitude of fifteen thousand feet here atmospheric oxygen levels are less than 40 percent of those at sea level they need to descend to a lower elevation for more oxygen that yeah that looks like a little overhang right there you see that yeah yeah it does I like the looks of this area let's go check that out nice and dry this is the leeward side the wind's not hitting us right here it's flat I think I can get a fire going with the materials out here too but why don't you do that I'll start working on a shoulder okay see you shortly all right go to it it's a great shelter we're out of the wind the only thing we need to do is dress this place up a little bit and we're good to go first things first just to block a little bit of the wind I'm gonna hook this honcho up my motto is to keep it simple stupid work smart not hard so I just took the corner of the Poncho stuck a rock in it to make a little button that way you're not punching holes and things I'm going to tie at this little tree right here that should do real well there's Shale everywhere here gonna build a very low wall to reflect that heat in if Matt can get a fire going grab some of this ichu grass have that insulation it's always a good idea to get yourself up off the ground I'm gonna call that good right there a little far going there this will be cozy here I'm seeing dry tender up on the cliffs strain out here so Lush I'm just running around trying to find just a little bit of dry material got a little bit stacked up what I'm going to do is bring it back to the shelter because it's gonna be tricky fire in there oh yeah it looks great yeah I think it turned off pretty good man I think we got real lucky finding the spot yeah yeah this is great hopefully I can get a little fire going what I'm thinking right now is see if I can go find some water because we need it yeah and give you some space to work in because it's kind of tight quarters in here and then I'll come back okay foreign this is one Surefire way to get water this Moss right here is super moist and what's really strange about a survival situation is that the same water that'll kill you drowned you give you hypothermia will also save your life my plan is to just squeeze water out of this Moss into the jar what's great about this is we don't have to process it what you want to do is just cut the top off maybe an inch or two because that'll keep all the dirty water at the bottom what you don't want to do is start digging around this stuff like a groundhog on crack and dig down to the roots that's totally potable water interior it's going to take me a few minutes to do this but Matt and I definitely need the water be able to use that for something later so basically just using the supplies in this kit I'm going to attempt a bow drill fire Joe and I have gotten battered by rains we're not doing bad right now because we're moving around but tonight just laying here in our clothes if we don't get a fire going to be cold so this is critical that we get this going this is going to be the bow right here it's a little bit gnarly it's nice and stiff though which I like that'll lock on really tight to the spindle an ancient fire making tool the bow drill is made up of a spindle and hearth board friction between the two pieces is generated by a bow that drives the spindle to create an ember in the Hearth so up here at high altitudes lack of oxygen not only means that I can't breathe as well but it also means there's not enough oxygen to supply fuel for this coal all the odds are stacked against me right now [Music] when you're in conditions that are almost freezing but raining that's the most potential for hypothermia so this this one-man bow drill that I'm doing it's not working out so I've got an idea that I can maybe stabilize it a little bit more get Joe's help in there and then we'll see what we can do one of the main problems of flow drill is having enough strength to stabilize it both with your left hand and having enough strength to bow it so I had this idea to build a modified bow drill so this one looks pretty good I'm gonna I'm gonna cut it here all the nice Fork so I can get some stability on this this device [Music] basically I got a log that I can stabilize but I can't bow while I'm stabilizing it so I'm thinking if I can get Joe over here he can actually hold the spindle down while I sit there and bow and I can actually use two hands at this point what's up bro hey I'm approaching camp and I see Matt sitting there but I don't see a fire in this environment and terrain I'm not surprised I got us some water I squeezed out of some Moss oh nice so how's this fire been going man what's up it's been tough this is really hard wood that I'm working with and I was unable to put enough juice into holding it stable right so I basically set this up so we can stabilize it I'll need you to hold on to it I'm just going to start cranking on this bow okay all right show me what you want me to do this is definitely not the best of conditions you've got everything possible working against you foreign [Music] I was looking for a number dude I didn't see one it was smoking like hell that was uh dude you know what sometimes it works and sometimes it don't we're fighting the worst of conditions here you know what I'm saying yeah it's just not gonna happen I mean we'll stay warm tonight if we have to sit next to each other and snuggle but uh you know you're not always going to have fire you're just not well It's Not Dark Yet and there's one wood I haven't tried I'm gonna go grab it we're on a hillside that's covered in polylepsis that's the only other wood that's available so I go out and I cut a spindle and a hearth board and I'm going to give it a try we'll see what happens foreign [Music] it's definitely it's working me it's working me a lot more than it would be at lower elevations cool keep going sticking around the room it's actually stuck in there amazing weather a new day in the Andes Tierra Elana or frozen land sees Joe and Matt continuing to seek lower altitudes and along the way hoping to find a clear path back to civilization conditions last night for Matt and I weren't good at all down our number one priority is to drop down in altitude and find a suitable spot for Shelter tonight after spending a night without fire Joe and Matt have a pressing need to make fire for warmth in this damp environment Matt will have to take additional steps to produce a cold what I learned from being up on the mountain trying to make a fire is that everything's gotta be on steroids It's gotta be super sized because it's a very wet environment so I'm creating a super-sized modified bow drill kit it's accommodate for the wetness here making a string extra big so I've got more friction on the spindle if you go a little bit bigger you'll produce a larger coal which has more energy to to get going it's almost like a two-man fire saw exactly we could definitely use this fire tonight yeah I told you first pick it up a little I'm expecting this thing to heat up because I've got a huge amount of pressure on the spindle a big pile of punk it's developing up in the trough that we cut it looks like it's about ready to catch Matt and I are burning calories we do not have to lose and if we don't get a fire going the only thing we're going to get out of it is we're adding insult to injury let's see what we got I'm not sure if it's the moisture the low oxygen but the coal is just not holding together no cooling that wood it's a lot of smoke cloud energy have you ever heard that old saying where there's smoke there's fire guess what that's crocodile why don't I grab some other stuff with a little bit smaller we'll use the same setup I'll say a quick prayer man yeah sounds good mate [Music] soft non-resiness Woods like Cedar Aspen Elderberry Yucca and Cottonwood are ideal for generating friction between spindle and the horse board and if that will look like an elderberry it's a little bit more dense than the Elderberry at home I'm going to give it a try I'm going to carve out another set see if it'll work I'd like the Grain on this wood a little softer than the other stuff or definitely a little softer a little shorter grains bottom of the ninth man yeah we gotta get that cram at bat we got the Elderberry Hearth and spindle together we still have the same setup but everything's smaller so we're getting everything out of the backpack pulled the Wisp room to make sure that there's no moisture coming from the ground I realized it was still gonna slide around because it was Hearth board was much smaller so we got out the tent Stakes started pounding those in to stabilized the heart so pretty much everything on that backpack's been used for this fire if this Elderberry doesn't work short of moving to the lower elevation I don't think we can get a fire up here it's great Funk coming up it's very stable the way it's locked down between these two trees and pretty soon you know how you start seeing that magical limber it's got a call after working so hard to get that coal together I haven't got a fire yet do your thing let's see it brother it's been two days of trying to figure out fire materials and I've been in a lot of wet humid environments before but this one it's definitely been the most challenging environment that I've been in that started flaming up and it was definitely a very magical moment nice yeah nice work man yeah that's a testament to not quitting and where I come from that's the kind of attitude you have to have is do not quit you know we've got a fire we've got shelter no-brainer we need to find some food we're planting some calories man everybody's heard the rule of Threes And you can go three weeks without food but not in this environment not at altitude burning the calories that Matt and I are burning I saw some fish earlier as we're traveling down the creek so I'm gonna go down and see if I can spot any trying to keep my profile low so I don't spook any possible fish and uh sure enough I see a really nice sized fish it looks like a trout troutner Hunters they have really good eyesight they're very keen on their surroundings so you have to stock and be really careful with your approach I see the fish is still there it's late in the day the lighting's kind of weird but I'm like okay I got this fish [Music] thank you I missed when a dart goes in the water it has refractions so you have to actually aim below the fish quite a bit there's a reflection on the water it's hard to see how deep the fish is water bends light making objects appear closer to the surface than they actually are extending approximately 10 feet from the fish met needs to aim four inches below and three inches closer than where his eyes see the fish okay sure enough it's a good solid shot and also and I noticed another fish darts right into this pool right in front of me so I carefully step back and I grab my equipment foreign it's like all right you know now we got two fish Joe gets his own fish and I get a fish hey what do you got there man a little trout dinner for us dude sounds really good I actually got a couple eggs for us perfect I've already boiled them Matt and I have had a very long day it's actually amazing what has happened from dropping in altitude where there's more resources and it's paid off huge I think we should Chow Down Tonight keep heading down thinking heading down tomorrow yeah man got a nice shelter it seems like there's a lot of food around here yeah I'm not wanting to Camp right now I'm really starting to feel comfortable out here in this whale back structure we got a fire we got fish I mean this is a great spot what about if we just stay tomorrow get some more food because we're obviously finding stuff around here get charged up and then we can make a beeline the next day let me think about that for a second um no that is a long-term Survival Guide he has his head switched on for staying here for a week or two that's not what we're doing here we're spending one night while you were down there catching fish did you see any way out of here yeah the valley definitely continues to open up in the morning why don't you take us both down that way and just lead the way and keep on going look this ain't no ain't nothing in counter group okay I'm here to get rescued I'm out here to Camp if Matt wants to Camp he can do that on his own time is like a high one and a lower one we need to go check it out because that's the first sign of civilization we've seen yeah definitely what we're seeing in the distance looks like two Huts it's square 90 degree angles it's not Mother Nature check this out Matt and I see a big log in the water but it's looking a little dicey it's moving in the water it still feels a little sketchy there's no way in hell I'm walking across that Matt and I have gained way too far to turn around now we've got to get creative to get across this River you know at home a lot of times I cross rivers with saplings like a long straight tree how would you use it to get across you just kind of put it at an angle and then kind of hand line Traverse like that and it kind of bends you down The Sounds keep our pressure down on it so that out just setting this up is dangerous but we really don't have another Choice Matt and I are going to move slowly methodically I'm taking my boots off to do this that is what you have to do in a situation like this if you're rushing around like a chicken with her head cut off you're probably gonna get hurt the little dog he let me stand down here just in case [Music] my socks are gripping the log but the log is actually moving it's very off balance this is where you gotta dial yourself in focused slow methodical a little bit Joe makes it to the other side and it's just an instant sire relief but now it's my turn s a little bit playing a nice job nice one yeah wow wow well this is a sign of civilization but about 500 years ago if nobody is around maybe you could Hooch up here yeah that's what I was thinking too putting over there hello hey sometimes Mother Nature dishes out some added challenges that's when you need to dig deep learn from your environment learn from your partner you'll come out ahead the warrior mindset is one thing that mother nature doesn't have stay in the fight stay alive thank you [Music]
