this episode of Dual Survival the conclusion of Matt and Joe's harrowing Journey for chocolate to get off a remote volcanic island that's 200 feet straight down where every attempt to reach rescue can unboxed in here it's a roadblock we're going in and out in and out we're supposed to be going that way that's not terrain that's water though this looks pretty deep yeah but how deep off the coast of South America a remote chain of volcanic island stretches for over 500 miles from the clear calm Waters of the Caribbean into the deep blue of the Atlantic Joe and Matt hit their biggest roadblock when they reach the coast it's not even here only to find themselves surrounded by high Cliffs battered by Fierce winds and no signs of civilization or rescue you gotta be kidding me oh man but sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't this one didn't flight's not over from at night we made a decision to come here it didn't pay off so we're going back into the jungle but the bottom line is what are you going to do Camp here on the windward side of an island on a cliff face I don't think so we headed east to get here why don't we head Southwest avoid that whole swampy area and check out that side of the island we're gonna head Southwest and avoid all of that crap that was up there and hopefully come out on the other side of this island in a better position than this over the island we go we're in the rain forest so you get tons of rain here every time it rains it starts loosening up the mud and the soil and the Rocks we're basically traversing the side of a very Steep Ravine be careful whoa we need to get off this right now it doesn't take a very big rock to hit you in the head and knock you unconscious and then the game's over right there hey Matt yeah be careful what you grab here some of these trees have like little spines on them we're hitting about eight on the suck level right now but what makes it worse is you can't even grab trees around here because they've got little thorns on them so I mean you're trying to steady yourself and walk you can't even do that man looks like it still goes down a little ways nice and easy man this is really slippery [Music] more water imagine that you can't even see the other side right now there's no way we're getting across here with those Cliffs on both sides we kind of boxed in here you took the words right out of my mouth man Peter it makes a lot of sense for us to go ahead and shelter up right here then let the weather clear why don't we just make a little down and dirty teepee yeah you know small volume just use our body heat to try to stay warm tonight that works for me mostly get out of the wind I mean look yeah it's just cranking right now it's probably one of the strangest places I've been it changes like Bam Bam Bam let's do it before the sun goes away completely all right sounds good even though the jungle sucks it does have a lot of resources and you can pretty much make any kind of shelter you want here oh no so somebody find some of those bigger ones but the problem is you got wet damp ground and the wind blowing that will suck the life out of you and that wind is unbelievable here man what do you think Matt about the right size it's looking good yeah man it's not a matte Graham Taj Mahal but I like them all good man to stay warm we're just gonna make the volume of this shelter as small as possible that way we can heat the air using our own body heat and stay warm it's nice having all these leaves out here oh yeah we're gonna have to get out of the wind insulate ourselves really well because when you get up here in these altitudes you got rain on you all day cooler temperatures hypothermia can set in I'm liking it it's looking good what do you think man you want to turn in Sun's gonna be going there shortly get some sleep yeah definitely dry out as much as we can man that stuff better be gone in the morning [Music] with a new day and the Sun is still hidden look at this fog Joe and Matt plan to continue on a Southwest course across the island but need a way to orient their journey through the fog I think it might be a good idea to go ahead and skirt the side for little ways at least try to make some Headway that way might just be getting around the corner and then it's done this obstacle is almost like a fence you can either go around it or over it or through it but we can't see the other side of it because of the fog so right now we've got the box around it Matt let's just stop this is turning into a train wreck we are falling into the biggest trap people navigate all the time and we're following terrain we should be going that way but that's not terrain that's water I understand that we've been going right right right right right this whole time now we're at a point where the direction we're supposed to be going is that way you know anytime you navigate you definitely want to stay on point but you also want to work with the land and I think we continue alongside the lake we might be able to find a trail off the side somewhere look I mean it's nothing but water in that direction we could either get wet now or we're gonna get wet down there either way we're gonna have to cross this I guarantee I don't know about that I mean this Lake can't go on forever and I think eventually it's going to break free but dude it's nothing but water we ain't never gonna get out of here following this they say we cross right here and just keep moving in that direction because if we keep walking along here we're almost 90 degrees off course honestly I don't think it's a great idea because we make the swim we're gonna be wet we're going to be cold we are putting ourselves at a risk for hypothermia but we're also going to shorten our route if he wants to go for a swim I'm going to support the idea let's just get it over with man but I do want to keep my stuff dry so I'm going to wrap it up and keep it over my head as we go across the channel all right let's do it [Applause] the way just dropped straight off don't it the minute Matt and I get in this water it's taking our breath away don't think just because we're in the tropics that this water is warm because it's not but we could be saving hours by just making a little shortcut getting back on course so I think the reward is much bigger than the risk than getting in this cold water hold on a second and I'm trying to keep everything dry I got both our shirts above my head and there's logs that are twisting in and out so we got to be very careful as we move across this channel let's try and get that right there this swim cut down hours on our movement time so getting in the water getting wet yeah it sucks here right here Matt come over here fit in the big picture it was a smart thing to do good but now we're at altitude the wind's blown and we're soaking wet so if we don't get fired tonight that is a recipe for for hypothermia oh mine's a little wet what's up with that dude all right I must touch my sins we're heading Southwest getting back on course and hopefully dropping altitude so was the risk worth a reward yeah Joe was right again on that hey Matt look at this one of those Pig pits we saw a few days ago on many Caribbean islands the locals dug Pitfall traps along game trails to capture invasive feral pigs for food yeah I've got some pretty heavy tracks right here they're really fresh oh yeah that's real fresh definitely been feeding in this area game Trails Fresh Tracks and pig pits are telling me the locals hunted here heavily and Matt and I need to think about the same thing dude I want to throw an ID out there to you why don't we shelter early try to get a fire going and Hunt I'm totally down for that we've been out here and haven't gotten much protein at all Pig's a big animal that would be a perfect amount of food for a Jonah for the next couple days with the decision made to devote their energies towards hunting a feral pig Joe heads off to locate shelter materials while Matt begins constructing a shelter this area is nice and open we can actually dry out some things maybe get a fire going I love it yeah right there a home in the middle of the flower garden now I'm just building the basic framework of the structure and Joe comes back we're just gonna slap ferns on the top the roof and for the bedding and we'll be good to go very simple [Music] got to clear out this area anyway so I thought I'd grab a few little flowers make a nice little bouquet string it up there so we're gonna trample this area at least now we'll have some nice visuals this is not a romantic moment this is just two guys in the woods appreciating Beauty isn't that nice rounding up dry material in this jungle is tough but I got some guava looks pretty good let's give it a go man looks like you got a fire plow set here let's get this spot flattened out a little bit I don't think we've done a firefly together before have we no the fire plow is the most primitive tool for making Fire by friction which consists of a plow stick and baseboard with a center Groove you 'd wobble wood for both pieces Matt will apply both speed and pressure to the plow rubbing it along the base to produce an ember basically all you're doing is taking two sticks and rubbing them together got one log one sharp stick and you're creating a coal at the end as you know across a lot of energy so I'm gonna go and when I start breathing really really hard jump on it yeah make sure everything's set position all right ready yeah man foreign [Music] that's it yeah nice job we got the call and now we got transferred to the nest but still no guarantee because this environment's really wet [Music] oh yeah now that we got fire and we got shelter we can start thinking about food hey Matt I got a really good idea for getting some meat why don't we head up the hill here and take those Pig pits and put them back into action what do you mean back in Action what we could do is make just a pungy pit cover them up bait the trail and just lure them in and just do all of them in that whole area come back on here chill out far and forget I personally I'd rather not hunt that way I just don't like the the idea of it I mean if you want to hunt that way and you want feel like you can monitor well I'm not going to stop you but the thought of an animal just falling randomly into spikes where I know that they could just sit there suffering I know it's distasteful to you but I mean that's the difference between where we come from just got his way and I've got mine I don't like the idea of a pig just being skewered I have a hard time just going into an area and just bulldogging it and hoping to make the kill right away you have to earn it you have to be in a place long enough and you have to watch it in stock and see the signs and the wildlife is it brutal yes is it effective I saw some really nice sticks down there that would make good at level darts you want to make an atlatl and then go hunting yeah Matt and I come from two different worlds and we need food right now and if he thinks it's skewering an animal with a seven foot atlatal Dart and it's not gonna feel it I beg to differ with him if he needs to mind screw himself that way and compartmentalize the Act of Killing then so be it I mean killing's killing I get that those are up there and it's kind of simple thing to do but for me it's a whole Act of primitive hunting is about the stock and getting up and watching the animal I don't need to hold your hand go hunt doing this increases our odds because if I'm with you those things are going to sit there dormant the mission is to get food I mean I agree food would be nice but I just dude the gloves are off in a survival situation I don't give a damn if I've got to shoot it stab it run it over with a car or push it on a window we need food yeah I mean that's sounds like the game plan I'm just gonna stoke the fire a little bit then I'm gonna head out as well we both want the we both want to hunt there's no stopping us you know and Joe's got his approach that he wants to do and I have my Approach that that I'm gonna do so we're just gonna go ahead our separate ways and see what happens Matt's gonna be out hunting with his act later and he's very good with it but I've got 20 atlatal darts at the bottom of these pits I'm working right now on an outlet set because I saw some nice straight sticks here in the forest I'm actually really excited just to go follow these tracks and see what the pigs are up to and be a part of this hunt and hopefully I can get something and bring it back so we have some meat with the outlet of what I want is a piece that's going to come between the elbow joint and the armpit the longer it is the more power but you lose a little bit of accuracy so I'm going to cut it down so it's about mid bicep [Music] creating the spur of the outlet all that's really the most critical part of it basically what I'm doing is pounding in an X and then creating the spur out of that X the way that when I make this chop right here it's going to pop out a fairly close version to the spur and then I'm left with this hook right here and that's the most important part because that hook is what's going to hook into the end of the dart that'll definitely do it unless the thing is the size of a mouse there's no doubt it's going to get impaled on at least four of those so it's gonna get killed very quickly so the next thing I need to do is just lay it very thin Twigs all the way across then I'm going to take some of these ferns and just lay it on the top and just camouflage it so once an animal comes in here bam and it goes and we got ham on the barbie [Music] foreign it's gonna be great for us [Music] Matt got a pig so I'm going to de-arm these things I'm going to uncover them take all the bungee sticks out I've done the best I can I put out the kind of traps that you would use in this type of a situation and it just didn't work there's no guarantees in a survival situation oh yeah here you go Matt all for you man ah thank you well done on the hunt dude really good job oh those are good that's like that's like Grandma's home cooking right there don't get too comfortable here man oh you got that look in your eye like yeah man food you got shelter we got a endless supply of water Matt Graham wants to camp now dawn of the Mac and Joe have picked up the path of a stream flowing Southwest that they hope will lead them closer to the coast dropping down we made a lot of descent and elevation oh boy that's dropping off pretty quick I mean it just went what are you thinking man let's check it out for Matt and I the biggest priority right now is descending an altitude quite frankly wallowing this [ __ ] Canyon down is probably the fastest wave that that may come with a price Crawford Slot Canyon it's possible it could open up down there I think we still got to get further down get a little bit more info here's what I don't want to do I don't want to get into a spot where we can't eat grass out of here I agree if we just jumped down there foolishly both of us and we can't get back out it means we're going to be stuck in a big section of Slot Canyon and we're dead that's making sure that we can get out the other end because where we're at right now that's about all we can do [Music] I'm getting in the water and I'm gonna go meet him and we're gonna continue forward [Music] oh yeah anytime you're jumping into a pool of water there's always some danger if you hit something rocks logs that's serious oh I'm trying to hit white with the water starting to foam up because that's probably the deepest spot [Music] thank you [Music] we did the right thing we made it in safely we got down from a high point now we're lower that's the reward after moving through the gorge we're in a place where it's finally starting to open up when we Traverse over the top of this very small Ridge and drop into this dry Ravine feels like we're getting close to the other side of the island Joe you hear that surf or wind oh that sort of place yeah there's definitely Coastline you can see that body of water ahead just cross your fingers it's not steep Cliffs like on the other side of the island oh yeah not much of a beach but it's yeah no Cliffs here brother It's gotta be somebody around here dude we could work this we can make something happen for sure what do you think Matt maybe here signal for rescue I mean yeah I guess it's about as much Beach as we got it's right here there's enough plants we could get a fire going and gather some green materials Matt there's a boat right there hey he sees us dude he's coming in think we're good yeah he's coming in every landscape that you walk into has its own sweet spot for survival but you gotta check your ego at the front door and realize that some places are just for the animals and plants to thrive in [Music] foreign
