in this kind of a sun you want to cover up as much as you can i personally keep my shirt unbuttoned a little bit just to get some air flowing through me it keeps me cooler it's a psychological [Music] advantage in the arabian desert in oman in this scenario joe and cody follow in the footsteps of a lone photographer who rode camelback into the desert to capture its stunning scenes but gets bucked off and stranded when the animal gets [Music] same spooked hey cody i see some crap over here look at that man that's like a nightmare that's just beginning the biggest problem you'd have in this situation is you're frankly in the middle of nowhere with very limited gear all this guy's shade all his shelters on this hot desert ground to add to that it's early morning right now and it's only going to get hotter hey cody there's a tripod right here this is one of my favorite pieces of gear for desert survival period and why is that because i can get out there without moving and i can save calories and water and look at the reflections is it a beer can or is it water so these are worth their weight in gold we've got two camel blankets and a container a 64-ounce container of water it's not a lot of water but at least it's water what you up to man i'm picking up poop for for a fire we can make a fire if we find water it's not be pottable so i want some compressed fuel there you go all right just checking man i thought you might be losing it out here if i don't have my pocket now you'll have your pants later that's not a good thing this area is not survivable so our game plan is to push toward the mountains where there's a greater chance of moisture and a greater chance of resources for our exploitation in this flat desert terrain surrounded by dunes joe and cody must climb to a higher vantage point in order to identify potential shade water or rescue let's go to this high place there's this ridge we can walk clear up these sand dunes to get to that apex all right man i'll follow you this will give your glutes a workout huh yeah your muscles are working too hard you're over exerting you're losing your footing that's the way it is we have to reach that top to see what's around us dude i don't see jack when we got to the top of the sand dune it really hit home about how desolate this area is hold on there's two trees i see what appears to be two trees but that could be a mirage deserts are renowned for producing a phenomenon called a mirage and the more dehydrated you get and the higher your core temperature climbs the more those mirages play tricks in your head if you were to move a great distance to get to a place that you think there is shade and you get there and there is none you've already dug half your grave we need to have some sort of line of sight because as soon as we leave elevation that's going to disappear because that wasn't visible from down there well there is between us and those trees is another small set of dooms if you can see them right there okay looks like two boobs okay we'll head to the boobs i always like doing that i hear you brother hey joe wait up we're heading out toward the fold in those mountains and i look to my right and i see a spiny-tailed lizard the locals call it thump and i'm gonna sub that thump once i had the lizard by the tail i flipped it over controlled the head and as quickly and as painlessly as possible bedouin style i cut its throat oh i gotta process this well we both know we can't eat that right now because we don't have any water i know so i don't know what your plan is cody but i have a plan okay i have a plan so i'm just going to go in the shade and i won't take too long because i know we need to make sure we need to get moving dude so make it fast i'm no stranger to lizards you know from where i live and what i do for a living so we're going to process this out pretty much like any other animal we process out out of all the three macronutrients the proteins carbohydrates and fats proteins use the most metabolic water out of the body to digest them so this is pure protein as far as i'm concerned anyone in a waterless situation it's dubious whether you want to eat protein but my plan with this is to get some sticks and i'm going to spread this to do what desert people have done for thousands of years and is to simply use the desert refrigerator which is drying so we're going to use the sun to our advantage to dry this meat out literally as we gain ground for thousands of years civilizations have used the sun to prepare food for consumption with the lizard's flesh splayed open solar radiation and warm dry air will slowly cook the meat as cody walks man this is a lot more like it cody we're getting a little bit of green here look at this shade massive amounts of shade here you know joe now that i round this bend i want to go down this canyon but there's clouds building there there's clouds up there that kills people where i'm from when joe and i pull into the mouth of this wadi we look up in the sky and frankly the thunder heads are starting to build flash floods are common here and they're common where i come from believe it or not there is a risk of flash flooding in this area because we're in a flash flood area and because we're in oman during monsoon season we're talking about joe going up top to be the eyes and the ears and me searching for water down low i'm just going to prep myself the last thing i want to do is get snagged on something so i'm going to re-adjust my gear for the climb and i should be good to go [Music] i've got some decent climbing experience behind me but i've never been here and i have not climbed this particular terrain feature so i'm going to do the basics i'm going to keep myself focused and i'm going to get to the top of this thing as fast as i can [Music] hey bro i'm good to go you were right there's clouds all in that direction a lot of them is it a deal killer are they just not threatening yet not yet but i'll keep an eye on them that's for sure hey well let's call back and forth every once in a while just so we're in contact i'm just following the path of least resistance or the military crest of this canyon you know conservation of movement's huge out here [Music] ah [Music] oh yeah it rattled me pretty hard but i was doing the right thing i had two good hand holds i knew i was gonna be okay okay there we go wow this canyon that we've been following down just dog legs back and forth and back and forth all i see in 360 degrees is nothing but more rock and more sand that's a pretty big kick in the nuts you know it was not easy getting up here but it's at risk reward at least i know now what cody and i have to face as we move forward and it's it's pretty ugly [Music] cody look that is a beautiful sight oh man we may be able to get down but getting up may be a little bit different so just hold on a second it's totally vertical over here yep and over there there's actually an overhang we've got to figure out a way to get some water we're going to take all this blue cordage take pieces of the blanket tie it together and we'll lower that down in there my goal is not to cannibalize these blankets any more than we have to gotcha but if we have to rip a whole blanket up to get that water then that's what we have done okay if you're willing to do that i'm going to take those binoculars and i'm going to try to get a fire going so that when you get that water out we can disinfect it [Music] although these blankets have provided cody nice shelter sometimes in a survival situation you may have to destroy an asset to get the primary goal and that's water that's what i don't want you to do this thing's so damn slick the last thing cody and i need is for this thing to go in the water so i made a little loop here in the top to hold it and then i've criss-crossed the bottom of it the best i can but if i throw it in the water i don't know if it's gonna sink so i'm thinking about putting a rock or two in here just to get some weight there's a lot that can go wrong with this we only have one can so losing this can is not an option all right [Music] sink oh yeah there we go it finally sinks below the water line and i see bubbles very happy here's a piece of camel poop and it's just compressed cellulose and lignin the main components of wood products so essentially it's like a fuel tablet so the better one use this all the time and they'd fill their fires up with this i'm going to powder it down so i can have the pieces small enough to literally ignite and burn like an ember i'm creating some surface area on this nice warm rock and we'll get this all nice and dry one of these lenses on this binoculars is basically magnifying glass so i'm going to get some bright sun and here's my ignition source fussy damn it there goes the sun again here it comes again we have intermittent clouds in the picture and if you have cloud cover that blocks the sun you're not going to make fire did you get water yeah man when joe comes back i still don't have a fire it's mildly embarrassing but if i don't have sun i can't do it there's still a bunch of clouds but there's pockets how long have you been trying for 10-15 minutes without fire we cannot disinfect this water we got wide open sun right now dude it's diffuse sun getting a little bit of smoke several years back i was in a situation where i had to drink some water out of a stream and it looked clean i spent two weeks in the hospital and almost died from it come on there we go there we go here it comes damn it there goes the sun again come on there we go there we go here it comes [Music] finally cody gets a break he gets an ember he's got a fire going that is great all we're going to do from this point forward is to drink water and super hydrate this round's ready so i'm going to pull it off and we'll let it cool cody and i are not going anywhere right now we are going to drink water and we're going to eat a little bit and we're going to rest and recharge our batteries here i'll just sample [Music] what do you think is it done [Music] tastes like chicken no but calories are calories right now for anyone in this situation having water to drink having something to eat and having a place to bed down at night is a grand slam home run you
