time in dual history an army and air force come together himalayan power but come on did they really have to pair me up with somebody from the air force even maureen would beat this out team's up with spend too much time on the ground a year for right out of the gate brady immediately starts jabbing me about being in the air force the air force has it pretty easy we kind of call them the chair force every once in a while they're used to being able to jump on a radio and call for help give me a second to catch your breath but i really don't feel like sitting around here too much longer the air force the army have been going at it with each other for decades the army calls us chair force we call them knuckle draggers they don't think we're real soldiers we don't think that they're as hardcore as they portray themselves to be hopefully we're going to put some of those myths to rest man look at these cliffs oh god i didn't have any path out the way i came in you got any good outs water right there ah i thought it was a sandwich it's wax for ski and some foil with it tin foil is a huge asset you can signal with it use it as a container it's a godsend with this ski already being broken figure i'll just break the rest of the binding off that worked great i thought it was going to be a little harder the biggest thing i'm seeing with this bag is the lack of fire making materials i don't have a lighter i don't have flint steel so we're seriously gonna have to put our heads together and figure something out what do you think man i think the only option we have is going this way obviously we've got sun up there get a better vantage point at least get our bearing right now i'm in total agreement with you let's go that way [Music] imagine trying to make that trek that mountaintop without shoes it's already murderous as it is i'm starting off by lashing together the framework of it that is the bend in the sticks that's the support beams that are holding my feet so i need to make sure those are tied very tight because that's what's going to be holding my body weight snowshoes are believed to have been invented four to six thousand years ago in central asia the basic design of the snowshoe allows a person to walk in deep snow without sinking in too deep by distributing their weight over a larger surface area much like a boat floats on water fingers are getting freezing once you put your gloves on because i can't do fine motor skills with gloves on last but not least i've got a webbing of lashing going back and forth across the whole structure and then i'm going to take pine boughs and weave them in through that lashing that's what's going to spread load my weight across the snow so i don't go all the way through let's go test these puppies out success look at that man that's good all my weight's on one i mean split by two even better proof of concept let's go make some more i didn't think it was gonna happen holding 220 pounds of pure man meat but hey they're holding up you know what man what i need to get one more shot at that fire [Music] if you ever heard a fire from ice all we need is clear ice man i cut it out of this bottle shape it into a lens and everyone knows you can get fire through a magnifying glass after gathering dry tinder and kindling from under pine boughs bo removes the block of frozen water from the bottle and begins the process of transforming it into a lens capable of harnessing heat from the sun and hopefully igniting the tinder bundle i have the basic shape that i want i'm going to use the sun i'm going to use the friction for my hands to start smoothing this thing out and get it more refined to the exact shape that i want start smoothing that surface out because i want as few imperfections as possible i was almost there yesterday man i take one more shot at it there's really no way to do it out here you can't get enough heat generated from that lens without having something with a lower flash point i mean if we had the old military style issued snowshoes those were made straight up in magnesium we shave a little bit well we don't wait hold on you got a snowshoe in there no i don't have a snowshoe but we've got all these different chunks of metal magnesium has a lower flash point than the tinder bundle that means that it takes less heat to get it to go up we've got a bunch of different metal in the bag i think it's worth taking a little bit time testing it out and seeing if we have any magnesium in there chemistry was my favorite class in high school you went to high school i graduated too believe it or not if i can shave them down vinegar and magnesium mixed together releases hydrogen gas and if we get a reaction there's a very good chance what we're holding on to is magnesium they teaching us in the army no this is chemistry and watching macgyver oh yeah there's going a whole lot easier dude oh look at that just peeling right off get out knuckle dragging my ass shaving off the paint from the binding is revealing a very shiny metallic option dude i think this might be it oh come on man it's a bum one look right there we're on the edge it's thick because it's cold but that is bubbling oh yeah man right there see him coming through get out man that's hydrogen coming out that tells me this is magnesium i've got hydrogen bubbles popping through this stuff if it's gonna work it'll work now with the magnesium that's right there's that focal point right there all right this is about as good as it's gonna get there we go how long girl yeah she's getting hot dudes work don't take a while to heat up please let me get there this thing is getting really hot to hold but i don't want to let go i don't want this thing to fail again come on sweet mama got smoke let me get it here let's grab it there keep it going yeah all right we're not there yet oh all right i think we got it yeah damn it we did it dude we did it without that magnesium there's no way this would have gone up good job man you too bud i'm glad you decided to go with it we can't lose this though we got to find a way to carry it around i can put together a patchy match patch match absolutely you're reading my mind bro i'm ready to get out of here yeah an apache match is a very old technique basically the idea is you take a fire you've already made and utilize the embers so you don't have to redo the whole process again [Music] by wrapping a burning coal in organic material like grasses or wood shavings then covering it and binding it with an outer layer of thicker material the coal can remain in a near smothered state for hours on end until being unwrapped and coaxed back to life by adding oxygen to the smoldering material ready to roll let's do it man september 11th i was sitting in physics class that's when it happened and i already knew i was going to join but that was that was when i got my my true reason about you like you man being in military is my dna you know my daddy uh was on the first black rangers i'm kidding went up i'm up to vietnam shot seven times survived so uh when i came of age i knew i was gonna raise that right hand you get
