the Texas Rig is probably one of the most used bass techniques of all time but there are a few little tricks when you're rigging this guy up to make sure you can catch more fish and today we're going to break all those down for you so stay tuned and let's get right into it by the end of today's video you'll be catching more fish on a Texas Rig in no time so I've done this video on my channel a couple other times with some other techniques what this video is going to be is a precursor to the later video we're actually getting ready to leave for Florida by the time this video is out I'll be leaving in like the next couple days so not only is this video going to prepare you for something I'm going to film in Florida but if there's any other ideas you'd like to see while I'm down in Florida leave a comment down below so what this video is going to be we're going to break down the actual rigging of it today get you everything you need to know about how to rig this thing up properly different things you can do with a Texas Rig and then when we get to Florida king of Texas Rig fishing down there it's like one of the most used baits down there you could go to Florida and only official Texas Road you'll catch a ton of fish we're gonna do some fishing with it down there we're going to show you all about how to actually fish the Texas Rig and catch a bunch of fish with it down there so get all the information you need from today's video we'll be using it down there in Florida the first thing we're going to talk about a couple things we're going to talk about today your weight selection when should you use a peg your hook selection your bait selection and lastly your rod and reel selections we're actually going to start with the rod and reel setup first just because this is the most basic thing when it comes to a Texas Rig we're just going to break down the simple Texas Rig today there's ones you can add a very heavy weight and punch with it and we'll talk about that stuff in the other selections but you can do a so many things with a Texas Rig that we're just going to talk about the one where you're putting a regular size weight on your line a regular hook a regular bait and you're just going to fish it around any type of cover that's on the bank whether it's docks grass rocks it doesn't matter whatever you'd fish a Texas Rig around wood is a great one we're not going to go into punching with it fishing weightless Texas rigs all the different details like that we can do that in another video so that being said we only need one rod and reel setup to get done what we need to get done with the Texas Rig and that's going to be your basic seven foot medium heavy this one right here I built myself you could get anyone that you can find out there that you really like to use and then I have a seven one to one gear ratio reel on here that's probably the best one for Texas Rig fishing a six gear ratio is going to be a little too slow and an eight you can use it but it doesn't have the rest of your combo be as versatile if you go with the seven you can do other things with your combo as well when it comes to line selection that's solely going to be based on your cover that you're fishing I almost always go with like 15 pound test that's like my starting point if you're fishing some really light cover or a big expansive Flats you can go down to 12 pound test but usually I'm only going to go up from 15. so I'll start with 15 if that does doesn't work or it's too light I need heavier cover or a heavier line I'll go to 17 or even 20 if I'm fishing some really heavy stuff but that's the setup there keep it really simple I always use straight fluorocarbon like I said you could use braid if you're punching with this we're not going to go into that much detail today so basic Texas Rig stuff straight fluorocarbon dot rod and reel setup and you're good to go now when it comes to hook selection here there's a few different ones that I like to use there's one that I really don't like to use either but some people really still like it so if it's your favorite hook stick with it it is a good hook it's just something that I don't really have a lot of experience with don't really like using and that's going to be like a round Bend worm hook just like this guy right here these are the jugular hybrid hooks from sixth sense like I said they're still great hooks I just really don't like using them because they don't have a very wide gap on them so unless you're fishing a straight tail worm or something like even a a big worm like this like a any type of skinny object worm if it's not that thin like if you're fishing a craw or a beaver this is not the hook to be using it will not penetrate enough because you're not going to have enough Gap to get that through and into a fish's mouth uh also it just I can never get a bait straight on them so I don't really like to use those hooks that much but like I said if you like a round Bend hook go ahead and stick with that guy right here these are my two favorite hooks right here and they each have their own place and I'll pick depending upon what type of cover I'm fishing so if I'm fishing sparse cover Open Water maybe a little bit of cover on the bank depending on what it is some docks some a little bit of grass light cover I'm gonna go with these Stout wide Gap hooks from Sixth Sense they're an extra wide Gap style hook uh basically my go-to I fish these probably 80 percent of the time they're my favorite type of hook you can put a worm on here you can put a craw in here you can put pretty much anything on there if you were going to get just one hook for Texas Rig fishing it would be this guy right here the wide Gap worm hook that's one of my favorites it has some strong wire to it so you can set the hook and get those fish out of cover especially if you're using up in that like 20 pound test range depending on the cover that's the one that I really like to use you can use pretty much almost any bait with it then if I'm fishing some heavier cover specifically grass I will use it in wood as well but I like that other one in Wood just a little bit better if I'm fishing grass lily pads some heavier like Kissimmee grass or Reeds or stuff like that up on the bank that's what I'm gonna go with this guy right here which is the aux flipping Hook from sixth sense it has that double Barbed keeper and it's a straight shank worm hook I used to not like these until I started fishing in Florida and played around with them a little bit and they are deadly when fishing heavier grass so the heavier the cover that's when I'll go to this guy right here again you can put pretty much any type of technique on here I've fished senkos on these I fish straight tail worms on these you can fish craws and beavers on them so it will work for no matter what type of bait you're fishing the benefit of using this worm hook right here is that your hook point will not be exposed it will be buried in your plastic you might lose one or two more Plastics throughout the day actually catching fish but what will happen is ninety percent of your casts will fish cleanly through the grass that you're fishing so when you flip your bait into a clump of grass or lily pads usually when you throw these wide Gap arm Hooks and you pull it up the stem of the lily pad and it gets pressure it'll pop that hook point out because it's just text posed and it'll get stuck in the lily pad and then you have to rip it out of there and re-rig your worm and it's just a mess if you use these guys that hook point is not coming out unless you pull it out so if a fish bites you set the hook it's going to come through but if you're pulling it up a stem of a lily pad and it gets up to the top it's just going to flop over and go right back down in the water I've tried them in Florida it is a noticeable difference highly recommend getting these if you like to fish in grass so now when it comes to choosing a weight for your Texas Rig the biggest piece of advice I can give you is choose the lightest way you can get away with that will still get you through the cover and in some places that's very very light because it might not be a lot of cover I fish on the Potomac River a lot and the number one Texas Rig weight size that I use this works in Florida a lot as well is a 1 8 ounce Texas Rig you don't need a lot because it just goes through that sparse grass really easily we'll fish Big Flats out on the Potomac that the bass will be scattered out there and you'll just slowly drag this bait more as a search bait than a flipping into cover bait and bringing it back out so you can do multiple things with your Texas Rig so a 1 8 ounce size is perfect for that type of stuff if you fish ponds a lot very shallow ponds 1 8 3 16 might be all you need they're very lightweight as I go up a little bit I'll start to fish a quarter 5 16 uh even a 3 8 so that's the type of area a half ounce would work too for fishing some sparser cover up on the bank flipping it around docks flipping it into brush piles and wood and lay downs up on the bank flipping some lily pads and some heavier cover where you need a little bit more weight to actually get through the grass and down to the fish that's going to be more when you're flipping a Texas Rig and you want the bait to go through a piece of cover and down to the fish that's when I'll start going up in weight size a little bit and getting it down there to where those fish live and lastly you can go all the way up on a Texas Rig I keep sizes everywhere from 1 16 up to an ounce and a half and that's exactly what this guy is right here again that's going to be for when you're punching and we will have a different video on that but I keep weights up in the three-quarter one ounce ounce and a half range for when I'm punching or even flipping deeper weed lines up here in the Northeast so definitely have to have multitudes of sizes of Texas Rig weights it's a necessity I've noticed where just the small smallest decrease in weight will get you more bites you might be fishing at 3 16 if you can get away with a 1 8 ounce you'll immediately catch more fish just because you went down in weight size just a little bit makes it more natural to the fish they just like that lighter weight and that slower fall rather than that very quick fall if you can create a reaction bite with this that's when you'll get a lot of bites on that bigger weight but overall they're gonna like the lighter weight if you can get away with it and the last piece of equipment before we break down the bait selection for a Texas Rig is when should you use a Peg and when should you not use a peg I unfortunately have zero pegs left so I'm gonna have to restock on this before I go to Florida haven't fished for a largemouth in a while but the number one way that I select should you use a bobber stop or not in front of your Sinker is is your bait going vertical or horizontal so what I mean by that is are you flipping into cover and that bait is going down in the cover and you're trying to pull it through cover to get it in and out or are you casting the Texas Rig in a pond or casting it on an offshore brush pile or casting it on some offshore Flats at the Potomac like we were talking about if you're actually casting a Texas Rig lighter weight you're fishing it on a horizontal pole that's when you're going to want to go without a peg you don't need it it's not necessary and you'll land more fish because of it I don't know what it is about the peg I don't know if it's because the weight is connected to the bait when you set the hook but if you go without a peg you will land more fish but you also get snagged a lot more if you're doing those vertical presentations so if you're flipping lily pads you don't want to take your peg off to try and land more fish because you're going to fight the lily pads all day your weight's going to go down through and your bait's going to be up on top of the lily pad because it's not pulling it down you're going to need the peg in instances like that or if you're flipping brush piles on the bank that's what I'm going to go with a Peg and the last thing when it comes to a Texas Rig is what are you going to put on your Texas Rig to actually fish and this is where you can get as creative as you you want you can literally put any bait on a Texas Rig if it's soft plastic it can go on there I've fished almost every soft plastic on a Texas Rig not necessarily on a weight all the time so a couple of my favorites here are going to be like a Texas red lizard is an awesome one that's a very old school one that people have loved to fish for years some of the other ones any type of creature Bait A craw a creature bait a beaver bait any of those types imitate bluegills imitate craws they're excellent baits for putting on a Texas Rig a couple of the other ones are just your standard worms everyone loves the official worm on a Texas Rig it's probably what originated for the Texas Rig before people were putting craws and beaver baits on there most people were just putting a worm on there and there's Endless Options when it comes to a worm you can fish big worms like this that are a big 10 inch curly tail worm you can fish littler worms like this this is one of my pond favorites I absolutely love fishing I've grown up fishing this in Palm bonds is small little curly tail worms that are like four inches long you can put them on a Texas Rig with a spinning rod or a bait caster and a light weight and catch a ton of fish doing that and then ultimately I've learned in Florida a couple of my favorites for fishing a Texas Rig as well are just simple straight tail worms whether it's a Divine shaky worm or trick worm or type of worm like that or even like just a regular stick worm or senko or these are the Sixth Sense Clouts right here those are great baits as well they don't have any action but they work awesome those Potomac fish that I catch all the time I take a stick worm put it on an eighth ounce weight I'll throw that thing out there and just drag it on those Flats has absolutely no action but those fish love it because it's just a simple approach to catch those fish in its old school technique that will always work there's endless I could go on for hours about all the different baits that you could put on a Texas Rig anything you want you can put on there it will work there's not really a given scenario where you might want to use one bait over the other other than flipping into cover so if you're fishing sparser cover you can use a bait with more appendages you can drag that lizard on an offshore place where there's less grass but if you're flipping into some heavier cover you're going to want to bait with less appendages if you're flipping bushes or you're flipping lily pads you're going to want to use like a beaver or a small cross style bait it just goes through the cover easier and will get you more bites so I hope you guys enjoyed today's video talking about the Texas Rig it's one of my favorite baits and I catch so many bass on it every year I'm sure everybody does it's such a simple technique but a couple little different changes or ways to look at your rig will have you catching more fish in no time if you want to see another Texas Rig video that I did go ahead and check this guy out right here we talked a little bit more about the Texas Rig and make sure you hit that subscribe button and be on the lookout for the one we're going to do down in Florida it's going to be interesting and hopefully we'll catch some big bass down there in the video so thanks for watching and we'll see you on the next one
