you can draw this in procreate you can draw this superhero dog and procreate you don't need any experience with drawing or with procreate at all because i will guide you through every single step and we will be using one brush only you don't need a whole lot of fancy brushes you just need the brushes that are in my treasure chest you can get them for free through freefromflow.com and once you have watched this video all the way till the end once you have followed all of the steps then don't forget to share your work online if you share it on instagram then tag me in the image not just in the description that way i will be able to find it and perhaps we'll see your work in the next video now let's get started first of all the canvas it's 2 300 pixels by 3000 pixels and the color profile is set to srgb and i have created a color palette for you which you can download for free through the link in the description that way you can use the same colors as i'm using during this tutorial first thing we'll do is change the background color we'll go to the layer menu click background color and we will pick this color over here now we are going to work on layer one and the first thing we'll create is the eyes we are going to use the round chalk brush which is like i said available through freefromflow.com in my treasure chest pack and for the color we are going to use this color over here it's the sixth color in the bottom row the opacity of the brush is set to 100 and let's set the size to 35 percent and let's draw a circle let's hold our brush in place our pen in place so it snaps to a quick shape now you can hold one finger on your screen to make it snap to a perfectly round circle and then color it in by hand so that we get a nice texture now let's duplicate this circle by swiping down with three fingers and then clicking duplicate now we can move it to the left and have about a little bit less than one eye in between and then click the arrow again now we can merge these two layers by pinching them together and i think we can make them a little bit smaller let's go to the arrow make sure that you have it set to uniform make it just a little bit smaller and drag it around make sure that you have snapping turned on and the snapping settings so if you have that turned on you can see that vertical orange line and that way you are sure that the eyes are in the center of your canvas now we are going to create a new layer on top so we'll go to the layer menu click the plus for a new layer and then we'll grab this color over here the seventh color in the third row we are going to add pupils let's start with the eye on the right and i want a nice textured feel i don't want it to be perfect so i'm not using the quick shape tool just drawing these circles by hand way you get that hand-drawn feel and in case you do need to remove a part then make sure that you use the eraser set to the brush that you are using right now the round chalk you can click and hold the eraser to make sure that the eraser is set to the same brush the round chalk and now you can use it to erase parts and that way you'll keep that textured look now let's also add two highlights on the eye let's pick this fourth color and the third row and now let's make a highlight over here and one here make sure that they are on the same side the light is coming from this direction hitting the eye here and here so always place them on the same side and we'll make the brush a bit smaller we'll go to 11 and add a little highlight as well again on the same side now we are going to create our superhero mask we'll do that on a layer underneath the eye so we'll click the plus for a new layer and then we will drag it underneath and we will pick this red color that second color in the third row and we are going to turn on symmetry we'll go to the wrench then to canvas and then turn on drawing guide then go to edit drawing guide and turn on symmetry here at the bottom and then you can click done now we are going to make a slightly curved line just above the eyes and we'll give it a slight point here a pointy shape and we'll make a curved line underneath the eyes as well we'll make a pointy shape here and it'll go down this way so you get a shape that looks a bit like this now you can color it in by hand you can make the brush a bit bigger if needed like twenty percent color it in by hand so that you get that nice texture a chalky real pencil like texture and for those pointy ends you'll need to make the brush a bit smaller like six percent so you can get that pointy shape and you'll want that bottom part to be pretty clean as well of course you can also switch to the eraser if you want to make it a bit more crisp if you want a nice pointy end just make sure that you always have your eraser set to that round chalk brush as well now let's continue and work on the head of the dog we'll make a new layer underneath our mask so let's click the plus and then drag that layer underneath and for the color we are going to use this color over here that third color in the second row and now let's add a head let's make a rounded shape on top we can actually make the brush a bit bigger let's go for 25 percent get like this rounded shape on top you can color it in and it doesn't have to be super tidy you can have a nice textured look something like this and then a rounded shape here as well well you could you could have turned on symmetry to save you some time coloring this in so go for something like this and then we are going to make the brush a little bit smaller let's go for like what is it five percent and now let's add these like spikes to add that suggestion of hair cartoony-like hair so just go along this edge along the rounded shape and add some of these spiky points for our superhero dog and vary the size of these spikes a bit and vary the direction a little bit making it look more playful you can just follow that rounded shape that you have created and add these spikeys color them in by hand because that way you will keep that nice textured look we're almost there we're almost near the superhero mask one more over here of course you can make them look a bit more pointy by using the eraser going along these outsides you can add some crisp crisp pointier points pointier spikes like that and then let's move to the bottom area first let's turn on symmetry we'll click the layer and turn on drawing assist now symmetry is turned on for this layer as well and we can add a little spike over here and one like this and it'll be the same on the other side so that saves us some time but at the bottom i want some variation so we'll turn off symmetry again click the layer turn off drawing assist and let's add some spikies here i'll go in this direction you can go in the other direction as you move to the right until you have something that looks like this you can use the eraser again if you want it to be more pointy same goes for these areas next let's add the body and the ears we'll create a new layer again so click the plus for a new layer drag it underneath the head and turn on symmetry by clicking the layer and turning on drawing assist for the color we are going to use this color over here the fifth color in the second row first let's create the body let's start here in the center and make a rounded shape let's not make him too too chubby he is a superhero after all so he's very active he works out a lot so let's go for a shape like this and then you can color it in by making the brush a bit bigger let's say 35 and just color that shape in leaving some little gaps adding texture like this then let's create the ears we'll make the brush smaller again i'm at five percent let's start about here just below that little spike and we'll make a rounded shape up a curve like this then we'll start here near the head and make an almost horizontal line to the outside and we'll add a little pointy part here and here another like that and then you can color it in again you can make the brush a bit bigger 25 for example then just color it in with that textured brush now you can use the eraser again if you want it to be a bit more pointy or if you need to fix it a little bit now let's also add a tail and a cape for our superhero let's create a new layer by clicking the plus and we'll drag it underneath that body layer for the color let's pick this one a slightly lighter color that's the fourth color in the second row let's make the brush smaller again five percent and let's start about here make a curved line up and then we'll go back down and we'll add these little swoops swoofies for its tail and we'll just make up words as we go so a smoothie swoofy little tail color it in just by hand so you get that nice chalky texture i feel like it's a bit too far away from its body so let's just grab that arrow use that arrow and move it to the left a little bit i think that's better then just click the arrow again to get out of there then let's grab this red that second color and the third row to create a cape we'll start about here and we'll make a like an s-shaped wobbly line flowing down and then we'll go to this side with another like s shape and then let's color it in we'll make the brush a bit bigger again 25 percent and then we'll color that shape in getting a nice texture and again if you want if you want to have a crispier point here for our cape you can just use the eraser go along that edge to make it more crisp and pointy all right now onto the snout area we want that to be on top of like the the mask and the eye so let's just make a new layer on top of all the others let's click the plus let's turn on symmetry by clicking the layer and turning on drawing assist and let's grab let's grab this color over here that second color in the color palette let's make the brush a bit smaller again i'm at six percent and let's start in the center just above that edge of our mask so a bit like this and then we'll curve and we'll go just along that eye you need a little bit of space there and then we'll create like this mustache shape little pointies and then we'll curve up and back to the center and color it in by hand you can adjust it a little bit and adjust the curve and of course you can use the eraser again to add some crispness you can zoom in a little bit if needed or you can make the brush a little bit smaller and work on these these points these these fluffies until it looks a bit like this like a nice mustache now we almost have all the elements for our dog let's continue let's make a layer that is on top of the body but below that head shape so let's click layer five and then click the plus for a new layer and let's turn on drawing assist we are going to make a bone we use this color over here that's the fifth color in the first row and we'll start here in the center by making a horizontal line and another horizontal line underneath and then we'll add these little wobbles at the end to create a bone-like shape you can color it in by hand make these rounds a little bit bigger until you have something like this now we'll make a layer underneath the bone so we'll click layer five again click the plus for a new layer and let's turn on symmetry again so click the layer turn on drawing assist and let's grab this color over here that second color and let's make a paw start about here make a rounded shape and go back up to make the brush a little bit bigger let's say 20 and then go over the area like this leave a little texture merging it with the body now we'll turn off drawing assist so we'll click the layer then turn off drawing assist and we'll make the brush smaller again five percent we'll start about here underneath the bone and we'll make a swooping motion going down then back up again and we'll add these little spikeys add that like fur furry texture and color it in now let's go and add a nose let's make a new layer on top of the others and let's grab this color that seven color in the third row and let's add a little nose [Music] make a rounded shape so something like this a little oval and let's give it a highlight we'll grab this color that fourth color and the third row and add a little highlight on top and make sure that that it's on the same side as the highlights on the eye because the light is still coming from the same direction now it's time for the fun part let's add texture we'll still be using the same brush for that let's start with the eyes let's go to that yellow layer let's turn on alpha lock click the layer turn on alpha lock now we are only able to paint on these two circles and our paint won't show up on that checkerboard area for the color let's pick this light yellow and yeah well we're still using the same brush the round chalk let's make the brush a little bit bigger let's go for 20 and let's lighten up that lower left area [Music] on both sides because that light it's hitting the eye here and then shining through and then lighting up that area of the iris now let's also grab a darker color let's grab this one and let's create a darker edge just around here because that mask it's casting a little shadow on the eye so just along the edge you can actually make the brush a little bit bigger let's go for 35 36 i'm just going along the edge creating that shadow be careful not too much do that for this eye as well just along the edge a little shadow now let's add some texture to the mask let's go to the mask layer and again we will use alphalog so click the layer and turn on alpha lock i don't want symmetry anymore so let's click it and turn off drawing assist first let's grab that darker red color i'll make the brush a bit bigger fifty percent and let's just go over the lower area just slightly i'm using very little pressure darkening that area just a little bit now let's lighten up the top area where the light is hitting let's click that first color and the third row and let's go over the top area of the mask slightly lightening that and while we're working with the reds let's work on that cape as well on layer six first turn on alpha lock so we won't be painting outside of the shape and now let's use that lighter color to lighten up that edge a bit just slightly and then we'll move to that darker red again that third color and the third row and we'll darken the inside of the cape a little bit where the dog is blocking the light so this area will be a bit darker now let's move to the head of the dog that's all layer four first don't forget to turn on alpha lock and now let's play around with these colors let's first add a darker color let's pick this fourth color and let's just go over the face and add a little bit of texture make these flowing motions go towards those spiky ends and we are making like a fan so we are we're imagining that this this head is rounded so make curvy motions on both sides and on this side as well let's add a little bit of shadow a little bit of darkness here and here as well now let's grab an even darker color let's go for this one and we'll add a little bit of shadow here to the top area just along the edge of the mask an even darker one here make a small edge here because the mask will cast a little shadow there now let's go and grab a lighter color let's grab this one make the brush a little bit smaller let's say 20 percent and let's add more texture follow those curves and you can slowly build it up if you feel like it's becoming too light you can go over with the darker colors again slowly building up this like hairy texture then some lighter strokes here and near the chin now you can switch to a darker color again with a smaller brush size like 15 you can go over again and add even more texture layer upon layer of paint of digital paint here near the chin now let's go and grab this color over here that very dark color nearly up next to the yellow and add a little mouth here just a little rounded area that's like its lower lip now let's go ahead and do the same for the ears let's go to the ears layer where we have the ears and the body first let's turn on alpha lock now for the ears i feel like we can keep a symmetry tool the symmetry tool turned on now let's go and grab this color over here the sixth color in the color palette now let's add some darker strokes to the ear making some diagonal lines adding that texture you can switch to a lighter color like this one that fourth color in the second row go back over this area and let's go even lighter let's go for that second color in the second row and add some lighter strokes near the top then we'll switch to this color that's the seventh color in the second row and let's add a little shadow underneath the mask here follow the shape of the mask and underneath the ear underside add a little shadow there let's work on the body as well let's grab this third color and the second row we'll start here near the neck and then we'll add some strokes to the body you know what let's turn off symmetry let's click the layer layer five turn off drawing assist and continue without it follow the shape of the body make some rounded strokes and over its belly and we wanted to merge with those paws a little bit and then we'll add a darker color let's pick this sixth color in the second row and we'll add a darker color to the bottom because near the floor it'll be darker that's where the shadow will be because the light is coming from above it's hitting at the top and at the underside you'll have a shadow you'll have a little shadow underneath here as well underneath that fur so we can add a little shadow just along the edges and a little bit here as well then let's go to the mustache area let's go to layer seven click the layer turn on alpha lock and again let's add some texture let's start with the color we are working with right now let's add a little bit of shadow just underneath the nose and then let's start turning off drawing assist let's click the layer turn off drawing assist so we don't get that super symmetrical feel so some shadow here then we'll start working with the lighter colors let's pick this lightest color and let's add some light to the top area of the moustache follow the shape make some curved lines and you can grab this third color for instance and add some texture to this underside as well just add some color variety to its fur then let's move on to this area that's on layer nine click the layer turn on alpha lock and first let's grab this color that fifth color in the color palette and add a little bit of shadow underneath that bone but at the same time follow the shape of the fur make some curvy lines and add shadow like this underneath the bone you can also grab the lightest color that first color in the second row and add some light to the underside here now let's move to the tail it's on layer six which already has alpha lock turned on let's grab the second color in the second row and add some lighter texture to the top area here because that's where the light is hitting and then you can grab a darker color like the seventh color and the second row and add some darker touches to the underside because that will be in shadow now finally the bone and then we're almost there let's go to layer eight let's turn off drawing assist and let's turn on alpha lock let's add a little shadow to the bone let's grab the sixth color in the first row and let's add the shadow to the underside of the bone because that will be in shadow because remember the light is coming from the top but as it's coming from the top the light also gets blocked by the head of the dog so we'll also have a little bit of shadow here so we'll have a little bit of shadow on the top area and on the bottom area and let's add a little bit of highlight to the middle area we'll use that fourth color in the first row in the yeah in the first row for that and let's add a little bit of light to these to these ends and in the middle area just a little bit and now for the final touches let's create a new layer underneath all of the other layers so let's click the plus for a new layer and drag it underneath the dog this is where we will add a shadow we'll use this color for that that's the eighth color in the second row let's make the brush a little bit bigger let's go for 35 percent and let's just go underneath the dog adding a little shadow we'll have a little bit of shadow underneath the tail and a little bit underneath that cape and underneath its paws here so it should look something like this i also want to add some light some glowing light behind our dog i want to use this color for that that's the lightest blue the first color in the first row and let's just go along the outside of our dog adding this little glow you don't have to be super tidy about it just a little glow with some nice texture and it'll make our dog stick out from the background some more so just along the edges and i'm focusing on the head i'm adding the glow to the head and not to the lower area that's where i want that shadow so along the ear and you might have noticed that in this illustration i'm using complementary colors and also a contrast between warm and cool colors we have the warm colors in the fur and in the cape and mask and the background is a cool color and if you want to learn more about color theory then be sure to check out my ebook about color theory it's totally free you can get it through freefromflow.com i think we have enough glow around our little dog right now now i just want to add some interest to the background by adding some bones there let's create a new layer on top of this one by clicking the plus and then i'll drag it underneath and for the color we will use this darker blue that third color in the color palette now the opacity of the brush is at 100 and let's set the size to 20 percent and now let's just add some bones in the background just some simple shapes just make sure you don't quit halfway because that will make it look weird so just in some random places like an abstract pattern in our background and keep making these bones until you have nicely filled your background with this pattern and then once you're finished don't forget to go to the wrench and turn off your drawing guide so you don't have that annoying line going through your artwork and that's it you have created a superhero dog i hope you have enjoyed following this tutorial
