okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] and so my friends with the traditional sound of the season that i want to welcome you all back into the virtual sanctuaries of of tbi this yom kippur afternoon as we gather for our our family service during our service we're going to be offering many of the words and prayers of tradition but in a in a slightly more welcoming more inclusive way to allow all of our families to to experience yom kippur together you will be able to follow along in the uh mishkan and also on the special supplement that has been created uh for this family service links to both the maxsor and the supplement are available at the um on the uh foot of the page the family service page on our website and will be placed into the stream in just a uh in just a few moments time but for now let us simply focus on this spirit of return the season that lies before us and the words of oziva visimrat yeah which can be found on page 209 309 309 thank you michelle [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] so as we enter into this hour of of prayer we hope that uh the eternal one will be our strength and will be our salvation for god is our life we turn forward in the afternoon service to the to the words of the the ashrae the ashrae can't be found in our afternoon maxo we have to go backwards to page 200 117 but it is my pleasure to to welcome up on to our our virtual uh bimmer uh sky who is going to be uh leading us in uh in the ashrae uh sky is not yet bar mitzvah he's becoming a teen bar mitzvah a little later on in this jewish year but it is our pleasure to welcome you on and have you lead us in the ashrae ashrae [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] ah hallelujah um absolutely that the ashrae is a is a is a psalm and a song known very well to to many of our name it's psalm 145. and it is a psalm that carries us through in the morning services through our success through our verses of song and celebration and in our afternoon services it carries us towards the the recitation of uh and the reading of torah we are going to uh uh stay in the morning section of our service now as we move to another one of the psalms uh of uh our tradition psalm 150 hallelujah we're on page 120 in the marshall [Music] um foreign [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] m [Music] hallelujah a beautiful song one of the anthems of our tradition set beautifully in this time to the uh to the melody of of leonard cohen our family services on the yamuna room and the high holidays usually take place upstairs in the lorraine topple learning center and usually built around a morning service they're telling about stories these uh afternoon uh uh minha family services are a part of our response to this to this reality in in which we live so you'll notice as we move through the service we're picking elements from the morning service as well as elements from the the afternoon service to bring us all to bring us all together in that spirit i want to invite you to turn to page 142 142 as we move to the the amidah for yom kippur the army dar is outstanding prayer if you're comfortable standing at home and would prefer to do so i i invite you to to join with cantaloupe who stands before the ark right now and if not then i simply encourage you to to follow along uh both in the prayer book and then as we transition out of the prayer book to our supplement for yom kippur the amidah harun [Music] hello [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] team [Music] and so now we turn as we move our way through the amidah to a a prayer unique to this season a prayer known as the una tanatokef and to follow along in our family friendly version of the unatana torquef i refer you now to the the supplement we cannot escape the consequences of our past actions but we have the ability to change our behavior in the future is a prayer that allows us to begin the new year fresh with a clean slate we release blame and guilt replacing them with forgiveness and a willingness to to change our actions for the better we remember that this is our chance to to begin anew we commit to beginning the year with our values confirmed and our spirits refreshed [Music] [Music] [Music] we look to the future with hope and excitement uncertain of what lies ahead if we must face disappointment help us to learn patience if we must face pain help us to find strength if we must face failure help us to learn endurance if we own praise help us learn humility if we are blessed with a simcha help us to share through sadaka whatever the new year may bring may we greet meet it with goodness patience and gratitude [Music] is [Music] and so the great shofar will cry to kia a still small voice will be heard angels in a in a world of fear and trembling will say behold the day of judgment for you two are judged in your eyes even they are not blameless all who come into the world pass before you as a shepherd considers the flock when it passes beneath the staff you count and consider every life you set bounds you decide destinies you inscribe judgments on rosh hashanah it is written on yom kippur it is sealed who will live and who will die [Music] [Music] me [Music] and who by fire [Music] who [Music] of may who by very slow decay and who shall i say is calling [Music] the realms of love who buy something blunt by avalanche [Music] hunger [Music] by [Music] shall chainshall say his callings [Music] yes for me but rosh hashanah has just begun and the pages of the book of life are empty therefore we can still change the decree for we are a people that does not resign itself to fate we can change the future by changing ourselves we can make our lives and the world better through our choices this this is the theme of una tanatokeff [Music] oh but through return to right paths through pair and righteous giving we can transcend the harshness of the decree these make easier what god may decree make easier what life holds in store make easier facing the world make easier facing ourselves as we conclude uh torquef we turn back to our prayer books to to page 373 to to 373 as we offer the prayer of the season standing before god baruch we praise you o sovereign god who forgives our failings and pardons our shortcomings for your people the house of israel you banish our guilt from year to year you reign in majesty over all the year you sanctified the people of israel and this day of atonement we turn forward to page 174 as we continue now with our prayer of service that say [Music] [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] let's hear [Music] and so we turn from a pair of uh worship to our prayer of thanksgiving we're on page 175 175 in our makhsour s our god and god of all generations to you we are grateful forever rock and protector of our lives your saving power in jews from age to age we thank you and tell the tale of your praise your power in our lives your caring for our souls your constant miracles for our kindness evening morning and noon we call your goodness your compassion never ends we call you mercy for you have no love your love has no limit we call you hope now and and for all time but for all these gifts god of majesty may your name come to be blessed and praised i gratitude a daily offering until the end of time on this yom kippur we ask that you inscribe your people that's us the people of your covenant for life and for goodness and may all life resound with gratitude and faith in praise of your name god you free us and strengthen us your eternal one your name is goodness you are deserving of thanks and we give that thanks now through a few moments of personal silent prayer so to all these thoughts all these prayers all these hopes all these dreams we add one more prayer into our amidah a prayer for peace [Music] be [Music] [Music] we are [Music] may the one may the one who makes peace bring peace down bring peace down may the one me the one who makes peace spring peace down bring peace down [Music] bring peace down [Music] we [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] bring peace down may the one who makes peace bring peace down to us to all our family to all our friends and indeed to to all humanity but ultimately most of us understand that the way in which we bring peace down is through our own actions through our positive deeds and and on a day like yom kippur by stopping and recognizing where we failed and and how we failed which is why we include in our service on yom kippur a series of prayers known as the the vidue and the ashamnu are confessional these prayers can be once again found on the supplement on page three and page four of the family service supplement and the cantaloupe and i will will offer them for you now we begin first with the the vidue we feel proud for many of the things we did last year we feel ashamed of other things we did god please help us make up for our mistakes today and all year long please help us to say we are sorry please help us to improve our behavior god please forgive us when we say we are sorry we are ready to forgive those who have hurt us we pray others will forgive us when we say we are sorry [Music] for the sins we have committed against you by hurting people and not caring enough to say i'm sorry [Music] for the sins we have committed against you by not seeing the good in others for the sins we have committed against you by misusing my anger for the sins we have committed against you by holding grudges and and hanging on to bitterness [Music] for the sins we have committed against you by ignoring our friends who need affection for the sins we have committed against you by not listening to our classmates who need respect [Music] for the sins we have committed against you by teasing our brothers and our sisters and who need understanding for the sins we have committed against you by criticizing our parents who who need appreciation [Music] and for the sins we have committed against you by being unkind to to ourselves to our body to our mind and to our spirit for all these sins o god forgive us pardon us and grant us atonement [Music] oh [Music] [Music] and so we move now to the words of the the asham the our new is uh an acrostic each of the letters of the hebrew alphabet our god and god of our fathers and mothers let our prayer enter your presence do not turn aside from our words we have not so we are not so obstinate and and stubborn as to say we are righteous we have not done wrong for indeed we have done wrong and so we offer this alphabet of woe each time we offer each of these words that the counter calls and and we collectively respond we tap our chest as if to to take these words to heart to recognize that in some way they are all part of our accent and our deeds [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] know [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] we have ignored we have betrayed we have robbed we have slandered we have been wicked we have done violence we have lied we have given evil advice we have mocked we have rebelled we have been corrupted we have teased we have gone astray we have led others astray these are the things on this day of yom kippur we acknowledge these are the things on this day of yom kippur we ask for forgiveness for as we continue now with the words of avinu malcano we turn and and face the ark and give it our our full attention as we offer these words of tradition um [Music] sickness war famine and pandemic ah [Music] [Music] [Music] volcano let the new year be a good year for us [Music] i [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] be gracious and answer us for we have little merit treat us generously and with kindness and be our help my friends we turn forward now to page 313 313 in our 312 i should say in our makhsorim as we uh transition to seda creator the order of reading torah on this yom kippur afternoon [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] the world stands upon on three things on acts of righteousness and on acts of of goodness and on acts of of caring my friends we arrive at the the reading for this afternoon's service and for our afternoon service for our family service we've chosen to uh to stay where we were this morning to continue to read the words of of parashat nitsavim which we just read a few weeks ago in shul but other words so often used on uh on yom kippur to remind us that attempts today we all stand together yes we're we're in our homes we're in our living rooms we're in our studies we're in our back rooms we're we're in any number of places but we all stand together our first torah reader is going to be uh judy cohen who is a chair of our religious life committee and uh who in that commit capacity has helped us reimagine what bar and bab mitzvahs look like uh in this age of cohort and calling to torah for this first aliyah together with their their parents and their uh family and friends are all of those members of our community who had uh shall we say covet affected bar and butt mixers uh simchas that were impacted by this virus that includes as he comes and sits next to me my son because he had his bar mitzvah in the in the garage out the back and my wife's going to come and join alongside next to him and so for this very first aliyah torah we'd like to uh call to torah together with their families all of those of our binay mitzvah who have had uh coveted michelle if you could please formally call them to torah but [Music] if i could invite you please to unmute your microphones and while we've figured out so many things in this year we haven't figured out how to have us all talk at the same time so we're just gonna make a noise i'd like to invite you all please to offer the blessing before torah oh [Applause] sorry [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you judy and if i could ask all of you to try your best together to offer the blessing after torah [Music] the holy one who blessed our forefathers and four mothers bless you uh jules miriam felix shoshanna ami davi renee elliott uh ariel cece ben ryder sam raf ali and zoe as well as all of the others who became barbara mitzvah in this last year in honor of torah in honor of yomtov in honor of this day of atonement but in honor of what you have helped us as a community to do which is to continue the shelter the chain of tradition despite what the universe and this horrible virus is throwing our way a quick question answer with a show of hands if you were in shul for your bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah can you put your hand up if you were online for your bar above mitzvah could you put your hand up it's been an interesting year and i want to thank you for joining us with it it's going to continue to be that way for some time and so we thank you for the model that you've shown for those that are also coming after you which is a lovely way of us transitioning to our our second aliyah as i invite you to either step off our physical or uh step off our virtual bimmer as we pass the yard to felicity uh perry who's going to be picking up the yard um and uh and uh who's going to be continuing our reading and having coming onto camera we can't call these young friends of ours we're going to call their their parents to torah because they represent some of the students within our um program our hebrew language and jewish life program that we are so proud to run in in partnership with uh with the it's progressive synagogue in in bentley and so you saw all of those banane mitzvah come before you you guys are coming up uh soon enough and i'm going to invite uh michelle to to formally call the adult representatives to torah [Music] foreign [Music] if i can invite you to continue with our reading [Music] [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] and then thank you felicity for that beautiful reading i'd like to invite you to offer the blessing after uh the reading foreign bless all of you in honor of torah those of you who are called to torah and those of you who came along uh came along with them willingly and also through a little bit of encouragement uh it's always tough spending a long day in charlotte and i pray please god you will have the experience of being able to do that in person and not just online in the year to come may god bless you may god bless all those that are dear to you we thank you for your commitment continued commitment in this time of remote learning to your jewish education and to the future of our community and we ask that god bless you and bless all those that are dear to you and we say together our men so we wish you a mazel tov having recognized our bene mitzvah students who we've called torah uh previously and now uh uh having recognized those that will come in the future in this family service we do want to take a moment to also recognize and celebrate those who have persisted not just persisted but have really embraced the challenges and opportunities of of continued learning our our tutors and our our teachers they are all uh coming on screen onto our virtual bimmer as uh as we uh as we uh as we uh as we see at the moment and so uh we're gonna have joining us uh please god on screen uh caroline and judy uh felicity rhonda alone uh idol leia ashley and tamara but they also represent those who can't be with us uh devorah kamasaraf who's been leading us throughout services over the high holidays uh sharon matata who's leading at etshayim abby goldstein ben white and and ayat tamiya regev who who are not with us this afternoon we are so grateful for all who have done such a wonderful job of of teaching uh the yad is moving to tammy she is literally up in the balcony producing the service while leading it and we will continue with the reading of our third and final aliyah if i could invite michelle please to call those who are on the screen in front of us to torah [Music] and if i can ask you please to offer the blessing before torah ah [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] is [Music] m [Music] my in thanking tami for that gorgeous reading i'd like to invite all of you please to offer the blessing after torah [Music] the holy one who blessed our four fathers and four mothers bless each of you all of you in honor of torah in honor of yom tov in honor of the students you've seen come on screen before you in honor of those that will follow afterwards in the year to in the year to come but most particularly in honor of giving us your community the the opportunity to say to daraba to say thank you to you to say thank you for persisting for taking on the challenge a number of you began teaching only in a covert reality uh others of you have been doing it for for years longer than that and we are so incredibly grateful for for all of you and for the work that you do uh in that space and continue to do uh continue to do in that space may god bless you may god bless the work of your hands and we say together amen amen before torah is uh is put away and returned to the ark we are going to recognize that that we are living in the most unusual of times and idol is uh on the bimmer having just completed that aliyah and i'm going to invite you to stay where you are edo um uh uh uh or not uh to move to the side as we offer a uh a prayer for a prayer for healing a blessing in in celebration and in recognition of the fact that there are far too many who are unwell at this time this is a prayer from the morning service it is a shaytzar the melody of of fragile [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] um [Music] [Music] may all of those who are fragile all of those who are unwell get a sense of safety security wholeness and healing through this season and beyond my friends as many of you know the the afternoon service from yom kippur has at its core the telling and the retelling of the story of of jonah the ultimate story of yom kippur where for jonah finds his calling turns returns repents engages in shava and is able to once more become a prophet of the the eternal rabbi levi's has taught a wonderful text study uh parallel to this uh to this family service but we didn't want to let this uh this afternoon finish without briefly telling the story of jodah and so we're going to lean on some support from our friends at uh at bim bum this fabulous resource that so many of our benemits for students use as part of their preparation for their their simcha who tell the story in the most musical and beautiful of ways [Applause] [Music] they must change their ways [Music] who caused an angry storm to come when jonah came clean the cellist threw him right into the sea john [Music] it's not too late to come around [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] it's not too late to come around when jonah shared god's message people fell down on their knees they would fast they would plead they would come to believe that god was full of mercy and here's the message we're sent it's more than how we repent we can change [Music] is [Music] it's not too late to come around [Music] and so my friends uh from that beautiful telling of the story of of jonah from uh from the good people at at godcast we uh we turn our attention back uh towards the sanctuary uh the story of jonah is an important part of yom kippur but only as much as it serves as a as an example for us as to how it is that we want or we should be looking to act in this year to come we're going to return the torah to the ark now and as we return the torah to the ark of the words of etz which will be followed then by the words of aleno [Music] oh [Music] i and so as our afternoon service draws to a close we continue now with the the words of aleno [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Music] my [Music] oh [Music] and so my friends uh with the closing of the ark our family service on this yom kippur afternoon draws to a close just a few brief announcements about what lies ahead for us as a community there is no qaddish in the afternoon service because directly following the service at 4 30 is our special yeast core service where we remember all of those that have gone before us then following the escort service beginning at 5 45 will be nila our final service the closing service of of yom kippur and we anticipate that at around 6 50 we'll hear the sound of the shofar and the end of this this long day it's been so wonderful to be able to share it with so many of our families we invite you to stay with us for as much of the remainder of the day as uh as possible but we uh we finish as we began with the words of article may we all be inscribed for a better year a year filled with blessing with health with wholeness and a year defined by us being together not apart of [Music] foreign [Music] moon [Music]
