us to close that gap of separation that we have made between us and our father by the sins that we have committed down through the days of this year so let us move along in our program we will now hear the reading of the scripture by saint mary eaves of jacksonville florida house of israel our scripture for this evening is leviticus chapter 3 and 20 verses 6 and 20 to 2 and 30. and the lord speak unto moses saying also on the 10th day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement it shall be an holy convocation unto you and ye shall afflict your souls and offer an offering made by fire unto the lord and ye shall do no work in that same day for it is a day of atonement make an atonement to you before the lord your god for whatsoever so it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day he shall be cut off from among his people and whatsoever so it be that doeth any work in that same day the same soul will i destroy from among his people ye shall do no manna of work it shall be a statue forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings it shall be unto you a sabbath of rest and ye shall afflict your souls in the ninth day of the month at even from even unto even shall ye celebrate your sabbath our second scripture is taken from first chronicles chapter 9 and 20 verses 10 through 13. wherefore david blessed the lord before all the congregation and david said blessed be thou lord god of israel our father for ever and ever then o lord is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine thine is the kingdom o lord and thou art exalted as head above all both riches and honor come of thee and thou reign us over all and in thine hand is power and might and in thy hand is it is to make great and to give strength unto all now therefore our god we thank thee and praise thy glorious name so read it the scripture give [Music] and i will speak and i will speak my mouth is to the lord with the cheerful voice [Applause] oh [Music] come before him serve him gladness oh oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] come before him [Laughter] amen amen love that that trill at the end it's beautiful will declare my iniquity and yet you want to serve him with mirth and praise is there is there a contradiction there no indeed we serve the lord even though we declare our iniquity even though we're sorry for our sins and now it is my pleasure to bring before you to give us the message for this evening elder solomon leach local pastor of atlantic city new jersey tabernacle unto the house of israel giving all glory honor praise thanksgiving and reverence to the almighty and most high god this god who is eternal this god who is from everlasting too everlasting i thank this god for all of his bountiful countless infinite blessings upon us and upon the children of men i thank god each and every day for our spiritual emancipator prophet william saunders crowding god's battle axe and weapon of war i thank god for all of the prophets faithful successors up to and including our current leader chief rabbi phillip eugene mcneal grand father abraham i thank god for all of you my many brothers and sisters in the house of israel all the sons and daughters of the god of abraham who are armor-bearers of and for grandfather abraham and all of our guests and well-wishers i thank god for allowing us to experience another high holy day season and i want to read a few verses from isaiah chapter 1 verses 10 through 16 just to set the stage for our discourse this evening it reads as follows hear the word of the lord ye rulers of sodom give ear unto the law of our god ye people of gomorrah to what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me saith the lord i am full of the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts and i delight not in the blood of bullocks or of lambs or of he goats when ye come to appear before me who hath required this at your hand to tread my courts bring no more vain ablations incense is an abomination unto me the new moons and sabbaths the calling of assemblies i can not away with it is iniquity even the solemn meeting your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth they are a trouble unto me i am weary to bear them and when ye spread forth your hands i will hide mine eyes from you yea when ye make many prayers i will not hear your hands are full of blood wash you make you clean put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes cease to do evil learn to do well seek judgment relieve the oppressed judge the fatherless plead for the widow for the moments that we remain we will take for a thought or a theme taking god's mercy for granted taking god's mercy for granted you know this journey from [Music] rosh hashanah the day of remembrance to yom kippur the day of atonement is a time for serious reflection and introspection evaluation and analysis this season is about looking inward evaluating our conduct our words our thoughts our actions acknowledging and confessing where we have fallen short and being sorry for those things it is also a time to ask forgiveness of those we have offended or harmed and to forgive those who have offended or harmed us it is a time to ask forgiveness of our creator for all of our sin and iniquity those we have committed knowingly and unknowingly this is a process that cannot be rushed god gave us 10 days so that we could be thorough in our self-assessment and be courageously honest to hurry this process or to skip through it would only be to cheat ourselves and our relationship with our creator and by this point in the process we are asking the almighty to blot out our transgressions and forgive us our sins our hearts should be fixed and our minds committed to do better if god allows us another chance and while i'm not here to be debbie downer my mind keeps coming back to a question what is it that keeps us from walking in a new way at the close of last yom kippur you and i were energized and renewed to have a closer walk with god we were rejuvenated and prayerfully we made some progress but if i'm honest there have been too many peaks and valleys in my journey maybe i shouldn't say this but i have found myself wrestling with inconsistency and a lack of focus don't get me wrong i love the lord and i am ever mindful of his precious blessings but sometimes it feels like i take two steps forward and one step back and so i offer this thought perhaps we have taken god's mercy for granted someone said god's grace is when we get what we don't deserve but god's mercy is when we don't get what we deserve in other words we experience god's mercy every time we fail to obey his commandments but in his loving kindness god's punishment does not fit the crime the bible says god's mercy is everlasting but perhaps we take that as a get out of jail free card that permits us to sin perhaps we think that if we simply say i'm sorry that all will be forgiven is it possible that we use god's mercy as a crutch that brings us to our texts found in the familiar writings of the prophet isaiah scholars estimate these writings to have been pinned somewhere around 740 bce to about 701 bce this man isaiah was an educated man who some state was of royal blood and he received his prophetic calling in the final year of king uzziah king of judah during a time when jerusalem was booming trade was successful the economy was thriving and judah and israel were on good terms but morally ethically spiritually they were headed in the wrong direction they were headed down that wrong road away from god the poor were being oppressed justice was being perverted the kingdom was making alliances with nations that god had warned them against and they had completely disregarded god's ways but perhaps what's most troubling about the state of our ancestors was that they believed they had convinced themselves even that they could indulge in this sinful wicked behavior as long as they maintained their religious rituals and ceremonies god described them as a sinful nation a people laden with iniquity corrupters the prophet isaiah's plain and direct language signal that god was simply fed up in verse 11 god declared through isaiah what hap what need have i of all your sacrifices says the lord i am sated with burnt offerings of rams and seward of fatlings and blood of bulls and i have no delight in lambs and he goes that you come to appear before me who asked that of you this is what the tanakh says trample my courts no more bringing oblations is futile incense is offensive to me new moon and sabbath proclaiming of solemnities i cannot abide god was furious that our four parents would disregard their holy calling yet continue the rituals as if the ritual alone would save them they took for granted that the access they had to god it was as if they thought they could just snap their fingers and all would be absolved we tend to take things for granted and we tend to take god for granted we tend to mistake god's mercy for approval oh god didn't didn't spank me too hard i guess it wasn't that bad i came across a devotional recently from a writer named leslie ko who explored this thought they wrote about an internal argument where he put himself on trial the writer wrote you take god for granted this is him talking to himself you go ahead and sin and sin and sin thinking that it's okay because you can be forgiven the moment you asked for forgiveness you do this because you think salvation is yours and that excuses you from trying harder to live a holy life you think you can simply fall back on god's mercy and grace and get away scot-free what about your responsibility to resist temptation and sin aren't you testing god's patience aren't you devaluing grace end quote i can't speak for you but if i am completely honest with myself there have been times when i have used this logic to rationalize my backsliding and i have taken god's mercy for granted again as people we we have a tendency to take things for granted some of us take our spouses or our significant others for granted we have been unfaithful because we know that if we simply say we s we're sorry or buy them a gift they will take us back some of us are constantly flying off at the mouth or mistreating others because we know that if we say we're sorry or or or you know how i get that somehow they will let it slide some of us continue to feed that addiction whatever it is because we believe that we can always go back home we can always fall back on the kindness of our friends and loved ones some of us have been allowed to get away with stuff for so long that we somehow think that the consequences will never catch up to us but on this day of atonement brothers and sisters i am i am warning us i am pleading with us that we must not take god's mercy for granted we cannot play with god it is dangerous and it will lead to our demise and our destruction god said to judah and when ye spread forth your hands i will hide mine eyes from you yea when ye make many prayers i will not hear your hands are full of blood in other words god said i don't even want to hear your prayers because you're not sincere when we take god's mercy for granted we run the risk of god tuning us out is that what we want i don't think so in matthew chapter 7 verse 1 and 20 and 3 and 20 the prophet jesus said not everyone that saith unto me lord lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven many will say to me in that day lord lord have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name have done many wonderful works and then will i profess unto them i never knew you depart from me ye that work iniquity jesus was making clear to the pharisees and sadducees that not everyone who knows of god has a right to enter the kingdom but to them that do the will of god it must be earned in saint john chapter 8 verse 9 and 30 or 39 jesus was having a conversation with the jews they answered and said unto him abraham is our father jesus saith unto them if ye were abraham's children ye would do the works of abraham again jesus was making it clear that god is no respecter of persons god is not concerned with our last name with our title with our degrees with our money with who we know or even the name we use to refer to him her or it so what is it that god wants what is god looking for god wants our sincerity god wants a pure heart and an humble spirit not a spirit of entitlement brothers and sisters we don't have time to play church king david said thou desirest not sacrifice else would i give it thou delight us not in burnt offering the sacrifices of god are a broken spirit a broken and a contrite heart oh god thou wilt not despise brothers and sisters i have some good news yes good news god has given us another chance god has given us another chance to atone to make amends for our waywardness and our heartiness god has given us another chance to put away our evil doings and do right god has given us another chance to clean up our act i said god has given us another chance to serve him in sincerity and in truth we serve a god who wants us to succeed a god who despite our iniquity despite our deceit despite our entitlement a god who says come now and let us reason together though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow though they be red like crimson they shall be as wool so what do we need to do how do we take advantage of this opportunity and stop taking god's mercy for granted we must first acknowledge that god's blessings and god's salvation is not automatic we must realize that every breath we take every day we witness every morsel of food we eat every drop of water we drink is a gift from god a gift that someone else did not experience and a gift that good could be taken away at any moment the bible talks about those who fail to honor these holy days being cut off so often we think that being cut off means a physical death but there is a spiritual death a living hell experiencing god's presence is a gift and we i must treat it as such brothers and sisters we must change our way of thinking romans chapter 12 verse 2 says and be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of god this realization this awareness this awakening and acknowledgement of the preciousness of god's presence is the renewing of our mind we must change our thinking what do we need to do what are the tools i'm gonna keep saying it we must get to know god we must get to know god not know of god not practice religion but search for spirituality not just based on what's written in a book or what someone else has told us but through a personal relationship the scriptures are a good start but we need to meditate we need we need to spend some quiet time connecting with spirit we must seek the lord in the center of our silence the bible says seek the lord while he may be found call ye upon him while he is near let the wicked forsake his way in the unrighteous man his thoughts and let him return unto the lord and he will have mercy upon him and to our god for he will abundantly pardon there is no shortcut there is no way around the commandments of god there is no way around a sincere heart i will reestablish a prophet william saunders crowd he said you can tell me anything but god you've got to show and it is time brothers and sisters for us to show and prove and lastly we must pray we must pray like never before our leader said the other day pray without ceasing and i'm adding we must pray like our lives depend on and not just praying not just praying to be praying but praying understanding that the effectual fervent prayer when we pray in earnest in humility in sincerity that god will hear our prayers this house of israel is experiencing some turbulence this old ship of zion is going through some uncharted waters through this coveted 19 pandemic and through civil unrest through internal restlessness and wrestling but you know what i know i'm reminded of what counselor elder calvin samuel skinner said i keep telling you that god is leading this arm and as long as god is leading this army everything is going to be all right as long as god as god is the center of my life everything is gonna be all right it's time for a personal relationship with god brothers and sisters a corporate relationship a collective relationship is no longer sufficient it is time for a personal relationship it's me it's me it's me o lord standing in the need of prayer not my brother not my sister but it's me o lord and it's me o lord that is standing in need of transformation and so i'm praying that we will come out of these days of all more committed more devoted more disciplined more grateful god has called us to do a great work there are souls that need saving this world is upside down there are people who need loving there is work to be done god has called us and god is giving you and i another chance another opportunity to make good to be sincere to be humble to be devoted to be true to be honest with ourselves and with god let us use these next 24 hours to dig deep to ask the lord to help us lord help us find the resolve to get on the right path the path towards you and not turn back we might get knocked off the path we might encounter a detour we might encounter obstacles we mounted we might encounter barriers but let us press on let us press on let us press through let us press forward let us press ahead behold the lord's hand is not shortened that it cannot save neither is his ear heavy that it can not hear for this cause i asked the house of israel to pray for me as i continue to pray for you [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] more [Music] [Applause] [Music] his love will win [Music] [Applause] to behold the works of god's kingdom we hear god's word we watch and we pray we work out our souls shall face [Music] [Music] for his goodness [Music] oh god is our strength [Music] to behold the works of god's kingdom we hear god's word we watch and we pray we work out our and then we give the lord [Music] for his goodness for his mercy god is our strength amen let us have closing remarks from rabbi henry brent of belleville virginia rabbi brent unto the house of israel chief rabbi philippe mcneal to the ministerial body and all of the children of god tuned into this service i'm going to try to make my remarks brief and positive there is hope for the center there is hope for the pilgrim there's hope for me and you the preacher asked a question i don't remember exactly how the question was framed but the question was similar to what what is it that seems to so frequently prevent us from walking in a different more righteous path there is a direct answer to that question and the almighty god has provided us with an internal compass to help us achieve a more righteous walk it's called conscience and during this period on our liturgical calendar it's vitally important that we nurture conscience the opposite of conscience what tends to negate conscience to nullify conscience is another term that the preacher mentioned it's called rationalization and when the child of god invents false yet plausible explanations for inappropriate actions over time rationalization tends to nullify the salvific effect of conscience it it it deadens it somewhere in the bible i believe it's in the book of first timothy the writer speaks of people whose conscience is seared with a hot iron rationalization contributes to that and so particularly during the 10 days of all if the pilgrim is going to set things right he or she has to nurture and encourage conscience many times we we don't want to allow our conscience to have full sway because we believe that the function of conscience is guilt but the function of conscience is not guilt the function of conscience is insight without conscience we can still see but with the operational conscience we can see completely the awareness that conscience brings enable us to speak the truth not only to ourselves but as the prophet zechariah encouraged to our neighbors as well the operation of conscience enables us to execute the judgment of truth and peace within our gates and so as a matter of practical advice it's not too late if there is a wrong that we have not righted lean on conscience god created conscience and he put it in each and every one of us so that when we're in our secret closet when when we are in that quiet place and we're seeking to fully understand our own actions and the impact that it has had on our brothers and sisters i encourage you to give your conscience full sway ask god to allow you to enable you to give your conscience full sway and if we do that on an individual basis we are guaranteed to have more peace more love more forgiveness more happiness and more strength to live out the true meaning of our israelite creed and our purpose on this earth god bless you i'm finished please pray for me because i need it and i will continue to pray for you hello hey me hear me hear me upon me one thing and that will i seek after foreign time is is is i will rejoice is me oh is lord i will be amen and amen wherever you are let's say amen to the truth i'm thanking the lord for this fine service we have on this evening this yom kippur evening i i won't belabor any of the points but i i encourage you to take those sermons to heart we had the blowing of the shofar on day one of this journey uh what you heard this evening was another blowing of the shofar another sound another blast coming at you and me uh that blast was was a little uncomfortable at times but we got a a somber a sober uh dosage of reality from from these two fine sermons uh i won't be labeled a point i i have so so i took so many good points from from both these sermons but the bottom line it seems to me and what both of them i think we're stressing is the turning away from from external external compliance to the to the requirements of this day and turning to internal
