his blessings this is a harvest season we thank god for the blessings of the harvest that we have been permitted to enjoy in spite of all of the horrific events that are going on in the world the lord is still good as his mercy is still everlasting and we are still obligated to praise his holy and glorious name giving thanks for the blessings that we have and looking forward to future blessings the giver of health and wealth whose majesty and dominion fills this ever expanding universe we are once again before your throne we're gathered here on this sabbath this sabbath shiva between the day of remembrance and the day of repentance our sojourn has carried us halfway through these days of all a daunting trek as it were and now lord we must journey on through this other half praying to receive our cleansing and praying to see our spiritual sunrise oh thou our strong father who has come to us in many forms and in many models but god we thank you for what people can call on a god like you you have forgiven us our iniquities and you have cleansed our hearts and our sins and we stand approaching another day hoping and praying and pleading for that cleansing and that raising and because you love us with your gracious and redemptive love if we are sincere you promise to hurl our sins into the depths of the sea for this oh god for your justness for your righteousness and for your holiness we just want to pause and say thank you thank you our strong savior for we know if we sincerely call upon your name and repent lord we know that you will forgive may this sabbath shiva this day of worship on this seventh-day holy sanctified sabbath as we observe it during this period of repentance oh lord we would not dare close this invocation without thanking you for the advent of prophet william saunders crowding we thank you lord for our present-day captain of your host the captain of this old ship of zion who with its precious cargo guides us through chartered uncharted waters through storms and raging seas and who seeks to turn us into men and women of fire and men and women of light lord we thank you for we know that faith can carry us lord where reason cannot and lord we know that faith can carry us where sight is not ours we thank you lord for our ancestors who bore the burdens in the heat of the day and although we stand challenged and convicted convicted we are yet convinced that if we continue to trust in your holy word you will deliver these blessings we ask in the name of thee o god of abraham god of isaac and god of jacob and for our sakes we pray for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen amen amen oh [Applause] oh is [Applause] while you're in heaven [Music] [Applause] is [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Applause] is [Music] oh oh oh oh amen amen oh don't they look good in in those brown those brown uniforms god has been it's been so long since we had the opportunity to worship together prance together sing together but we pray that the lord will make it possible for us to do just that and and write and right soon oh come join the heavenly army that's our cry today come come and worship with us on this beautiful sabbath certainly enjoy the very fine invocation coming from of the grand chaplain and he had a couple of phrases in that that prayer that lets me and you know that we are about during this holy season we are about a little a little personal house cleaning right spiritual house cleaning cleaning our minds and cleaning our bodies and cleaning our spirits to prepare us to meet the lord and to do the lord's work let us now move to another phase of our worship certainly teaching and learning is a part of our worship and we move now to our sabbath school session which will be conducted by saint khadija miller the assistant general superintendent of the sabbath school let us begin [Applause] [Applause] is [Music] the lord of god [Applause] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] hear o israel the lord is our god the lord is one one is our god great is our lord holy is his name and thou shalt love the lord thy god with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might and these words which i command thee this day shall be upon thy heart and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shall talk of them when thou sittest in thine house and when thy walketh by the way and when thou liest down and when thou risest up we will begin our devotional period with the reading of the scripture coming from deuteronomy chapter 7 verses 6 through 9. for thou art and holy people unto the lord thy god the lord thy god hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself above all people that are upon the face of the earth the lord did not set his love upon you nor choose you because ye were more in number than any people for ye were the fewest of all people but because the lord loved you and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers hath the lord brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you out of the house of bondman from the hand of pharaoh king of egypt know therefore that the lord thy god he is god the faithful god which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations so in if the reading of the scripture i will now recite the keys and the commandments excuse me the keys and the summary of the commandments on behalf of the school first key church of god and saints of christ first communion chapter 1 and verse two second key one is forbidden to be drunk in the church of god and saints of christ forever leviticus chapter 10 in verse nine third key eleven bread and water for christ body and blood saint matthew chapter 16 20 verses 6 and 20 through 8 and 20. fourth key foot washing is a commandment saying john chapter 13 verses one through fifth key the disciples prayer saint matthews chapter 6 verse 9 to 14 6 key you must be breathed upon and saluted in the church of god and saints of christ with the holy kiss romans chapter 16 and verse 16 saint john chapter 20 verses 2 and 20. seventh key the ten commandments exodus chapter 20 verses 1 to 18. first of all the commandments is hear o israel the lord is our god the lord is one and thou shalt love the lord thy god with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind and with all thy strength and the second is like namely this thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets the morning's reading lesson was deuteronomy chapter 3 and 20 and 4 and 20. there were no seven key precepts i will now recite a memory verse on behalf of the school deuteronomy chapter 3 and 20 and verse 3 and 20. that which is gone out of thy lips shouts excuse me that which has gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform even a free will offering according as thou has bowed unto the lord thy god which thou has promised with thy thymous these two chapters from the morning reading lesson focused on laws and ordinances with a list of what to do how to do and what not to do and i encourage us all to continue to read and study the word of god and to read the morning lesson to glean lessons to help us as we tarry on this journey called life and now we will go into our sabbath school lesson uh yes [Music] great [Music] ah [Music] please and that is today's lesson this sabbath is one that we've never seen before and one we will never see again it is the sabbath between rosh hashanah and yom kippur the sabbath of return shabbat shiva where we pledge our return to god's commandments his ways and to walk in his truth we pray to god thankful for his remembrance and his goodness through our lives thus far and we seek forgiveness as we prepare for the day of atonement during these days of all days spent contemplating and searching seeking purging and praying these days of inner reckoning repentance forgiveness and hopefully to walk in a new way on the other side these days are days that i take quite personally and so if i may i would like to share my own process to act a c t act is an acronym that may stand for to be accountable compassion and truthful things now of course to not only be accountable for my own sins but also to display compassion for myself and for others to be truthful honest and always to thank god for another chance for the lessons learned from my pants so this call to act includes some items to help me turn as the sabbath of return i am seeking to return to god and to god's plan so this call to act includes the mirror now the mirror is for introspection oftentimes we look at ourselves and we look at a regular mirror but this week i'm flipping it to the enlarged microscopic lens to see these pores these ingrained hairs the acne the moles it's a week for me to look at myself and ask who is khadijah what is she about how does she live and how does she treat others what is her god-given purpose and why does she behave as she does good and bad this is a time for me to turn inward and to list out with pen and paper to document my behavior over the last year it's a time to calculate my calculations so that i can turn back to god now psalm 139 states search me i ask god and trepidation and humility to search me verses 1 through 4 say oh lord thou has searched me and know me thou knowest my down sitting and my uprising thou understand us my thoughts are far off lord have mercy thou compasses my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways for there is not a word in my tongue but lo oh lord thou knowest it all together this psalm ends in verses 3 and 20 and 4 and 20 which says search me o god and know my heart try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting and in this searching like the song says to turn us again o lord psalm 80 verse 3 says turn us again o god and cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved and verse 7 continues turn us again o god of hosts and cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved and even further in verse 19 which ends this psalm turn us again o lord god of hosts cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved psalm 85 and verse 4 states turn us o god of our salvation and cause thine anger toward us to cease psalm 119 and verse 79 admonishes let those that fear thee turn to thee unto thee and those that have known thy testimonies now i also have my bible the word of god all of these scriptures speak to the power of turning sometimes to turn towards something but also when you're turning towards something you're turning away from something and honestly that is what we need to do and that is what i need to do i pray to turn inward and to turn towards love to turn towards loved ones to turn to the truth and to turn not only to peace but to turn with peace and in peace and with compassion and humility to ultimately turn fully to god so i have the bible to assist me in this act of being accountable confessing and tenacious in this blessed opportunity to turn zechariah 1 3 says therefore say thou unto me thus says the lord of hosts turn ye unto me saith the lord of hosts and i will turn unto you says the lord of hosts lamentations 3 and verse 40 tells us let us search and try our ways and turn again to the lord hosea 12 6 tells us therefore turn thou to thy god keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy god continually proverbs 9 and 20 and verse 8 states scornful men bring a city into a snare but wise men turn away wrath and that is the part of turning to turn away from evil doing thoughts and actions so as i'm turning towards love i'm also turning my back on ego malice jealousy i'm turning away from confusion i'm turning away from gossip and mean-spirited talk and negative energy i am turning away from evil ezekiel 14 6 therefore say unto the house of israel therefore say unto the house of israel that says the lord god excuse me repent and turn yourselves from your idols and turn away your faces from all your abominations i am working on turning from social media and television and radio and other forms in my life that have become idols this turning from is like a detox a everyday detox a occasional detox it's even like when you have to get that pumice and scrub that dead skin off i am getting rid of those toxins and i am working to rebuild my system to cleanse to restore to refresh and rebuild sometimes we detox we have to detox internally and we have to detox externally we are shedding and shedding is good sometimes we shed naturally the hair sheds naturally and the skin sheds naturally it is our body's natural way to get rid of what we don't need and to help restore what we do need so i am turning away in order to turn towards god so i can live ezekiel 3 30 and verse 11 tells us say unto them as i live said the lord god i have no pleasure in the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from his way and live turn ye turn ye from your evil ways for why will ye die o house of israel further on in verse 19 it states but if the wicked turn from his wickedness and do that which is lawful and right he shall live thereby and we all know ii chronicles 7 14 if my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then will i hear from heaven and i will forgive their sin and will heal their land so i am in a a.c.t act of turning to god and turning from evil and sin this is my turn this is my time and my turn to act to ask for forgiveness to confess my sins and to turn anew turn around and turn away this is my time to act with attrition contemplation and thanksgiving this is my time to act to apologize to consider and to but and to be tenacious for the lord this is my time to act to be in a tomb bringing into harmony to coalesce to grow together and unite as a whole together with my brothers and sisters this is my time to act to acquire peace to calm my fears and to turn today this week right now towards god this is my time to act to apply to commit and to tarry in truth yes we are also seeking forgiveness from one another and of ourselves ultimately asking god's forgiveness we can turn to psalm 3 and 20 and verse 5. acts 3 19 james 4 7-8 first john 1-9 if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness we all know the 51st song to create in us clean hearts romans 12 1 first chronicles 16 and verse 11 and 1st thessalonians 5 and verse 16. these scriptures written thousands of years ago apply today they all call for us to turn a shift and act a movement towards love towards forgiveness towards compassion and towards peace as it states in micah 6 8 when we act we do justly we love mercy and we walk humbly with god we are full of peace and strengthened by god as it states in isaiah 6 20 verses 3 to 4 thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee trust ye in the lord forever for in the lord jehovah is everlasting strength strength to act strength to turn and the almighty will turn to us as it states in micah 7 19 he will turn again he will have compassion upon us he will subdue our iniquities iniquities and thou will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea when we turn to god god is right there he is already turned to us so we may see and feel and become enveloped in god's saving grace and power now this is just my personal act applying contribution today but as the song says god will turn us again he will cause his face to shine and he will ultimately save us thank you for hearing my act and i welcome you to act and to engage in accountable compassion with truthful thanks um yes [Music] [Music] oh again [Music] i turned the sabbath school into the hands of our beloved leader chief rabbi philip e mcneil grandfather abraham amen amen think a dj amen what a beautiful and creative and inspiring lesson my colleagues and i were were in a debate wondering where that creativity of yours come from does it come from your father or does it come from your mother and we came to a consensus which we'll share with you later what we are about we are about and she put so so plain we are about our own earthly mortal turning and she gave us a nice act formula but there's a divine turning and she put it so well that also accompanies our turning and it's certainly the case if the lord sees you trying to turn he'll be more than happy and more than willing to complete the process turn us again he will turn us again and and that and that again is significant because it means that we we have a tendency as humans to turn the wrong way we're so easily distracted oh we come out of these these celebrations on such a high note with resolutions and and we're and we're ready to go uh but but the mortal pitfalls inevitably uh get into our way uh give obstacles in our way and the lord has all day and the lord knew what he's when he's ordained an annual anniversary of of requiring us to assess where we are that's self-inventory an annual self-inventory where are you how far have you strayed how much have you turned away from the source of your salvation well here's your opportunity a.c.t is your opportunity what was the accountability what was the second um accountable compassion compassion and the third truth truthful truthful and then she worked some other acts into that into that process it's a beautiful i can't wait to get my hands on that presentation i also told the people sitting around me that she's that she preached my sermon so when when it comes time for for sermon i'm going to call on saint khadija to to to to complete the process but the spirit the spirit is one the the spirit is one so thank you so much khadijah and i and i encourage you brothers and sisters to to get into those scriptures to get into those scriptures that she that she laid down those are some powerful scriptures of course with this youtube presentation you can go back play it over again and get those scriptures and go and study those scripts it would be a good idea to study them during what i call this middle passage middle passage between day of remembrance and day of atonement to try to get your get your get your orientation to get your orientation corrected to to um to get what what amounts to a to a course a course correction right chain changing direction and that's that's the beauty of this technology the lord has provided this beautiful youtube technology can go back study the presentation pull off those scriptures and go to it now these these scriptures a form a a a a kind of a a blueprint a a a way a way forward to get closer to our father in heaven and i'm encouraging you get get into those scriptures get get the goodies out of them get the comfort get the patience as the scripture says get the knowledge and the inspiration that has been provided by god himself through these inspired through these inspired scriptures so thank you so much saint cathedral miller for this very fine worship session teaching and learning growing and developing and inspiring so at this point we will we'll we will take a a moment or two to um refresh ourselves if necessary and and prepare for the worship service during this uh doing this brief three to five minute intermission we'll be making some announcements about future about future services we are going to have a a a beginning of yom kippur service on wednesday evening at 6 00 p.m by youtube and of course you'll see the announcements and we will have a an early morning prayer service at 4 00 a.m on thursday morning yom kippur day we'll have a morning yom kippur service and we and we'll have an afternoon yom kippur service of course we will begin our fast our yom kippur fast as dictated by the scriptures we'll begin our young kippur fast on wednesday evening and we will terminate that fast on thursday in the in the afternoon thursday in the evening but these um these events have been have been mandated have been passed down to us from our biblical forefathers they've been done by our forefathers through the years and we thank god for sending us his prophet who reconnected us you and me reconnected us with the faith of our fathers uh with the with the re-establishing the reconnection with the faith and the traditions of our of our forefathers going all the way back to our father abraham himself aren't you glad aren't you glad god sent his problem i'm overjoyed that god favored us by sending us his prophet william saunders crowding so let us rejoice and be glad so at this time we will take a moment or two of intermission prior to our sabbath chuva service asking the lord to bless each and every one of you i know some of you are going through some trials and tribulations some have illnesses of one kind and another some have crises of one kind another and and i commend to you prayer and supplication and worship to get you through these trying circumstances so at this point let us now take our three would be three or three the three to five minute intermission and i think we're going to have some i think we have some music as well i think we're going to have a a a surprise this this is the first sabbath in brown and of course if we were in we were in the tabernacle at some point we would jump up and say 36 sabbaths in the year we were liberal i don't know probably during the choir march oh i i miss church brothers and sisters i miss it but i'm staying i'm staying faithful to our our father in heaven because i know that sooner or later he's going to make a provision for us to worship together glorifying his holy and righteous name in spirit and in truth and together in his sanctuary all right let me turn this off let me turn this off before before i preach my sermon right here now well i don't have to preach hey saint khadija's already pre [Laughter] all right let us begin our intermissions [Applause] there are three brilliant colors beginning [Applause] the blue and brown according to the holy sing unto the lord let us make a joyful with noise royal colors on is teaching on the sabbath of the lord all the saints shall be red and blue and brown sing unto the lord let us make a joyful noise roblin blue and brown with these royal colors on is teachings on the sabbath of the lord all the sake shall be reigning blue and brown again the blue [Music] in the city [Music] [Applause] [Music] the blue and brown according to the holy [Music] all the songs we sing and the armies that we wear they are the saiyans of the prophets that came down from above and are risen in saint john 6 45 our doctrine may seem strange though it's in the savior's name all the songs we sing and the armies that we wear they are the saints of the prophets that came down from above we were [Music] okay behold the brown the blue [Applause] and brought the light that we might see straight from earth to glory behold the brown the blue and brown thirty-six the blue and brown the blue and ground [Applause] oh foreign ah now [Applause] is for me crazy oh oh is through [Applause] is foreign is [Music] yes [Music] oh hey [Applause] oh oh [Applause] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Applause] amen amen what a beautiful beautiful song we were just talking about the mastery of that song going from the somber tones of through all trials and tribulations uh in in in that that sad part of it and then all of a sudden came on man and we were looking at the we were looking at that ensemble some of those ladies looked like they about ready to jump out of those chairs all but one day brothers and sisters and it won't be long we'll sing together and we'll prance together and we'll praise god together in in his sanctuary but until that time of this this technological medium is just going to have to suffice to suffice and and it's and it's good and we thank the lord we thank the lord for the blessing of this technology so on this beautiful sabbath again i want to greet all of my brothers and sisters from tabernacles in the united states our tabernacles in south and central africa our tabernacle in kingston jamaica and greet any who are visiting and worshiping with us on this beautiful sabbath day this is the day which the lord hath made and we ought to rejoice and be glad in it we and we have plenty to rejoice about the lord has certainly been good to israel to our brothers and sisters in the communities in which we serve and indeed in the world in general i i noticed on the screen the reminder that our children have gone back to school and i want to take this opportunity to ask the lord to to be with our children to bless them to put his arms of protection around them relative to this dread and of course i encourage our children to be safe to be cautious to wear masks to not congregate in large crowds when necessary i noticed the other day at some of those football games lord i looked at i looked at that crowd and i wondered didn't see a whole lot of mass over there i wondered how many of those people are going to come away from that large gathering having contracted that that that virus but we're praying and asking for god's mercy to relieve us of this dread disease and we know he's able and we and until he does we just have to put our trust in him and do the best that we can let us now turn to our worship service uh we we're pleased to have to do the call to worship saint rachael crowley vulcans of washington d.c our service will be led by elder william billingsley of roanoke virginia he will be assisted by responsive reader saint sharon thompson of brooklyn new york the scripture will be read by saint susianna anderson of los angeles california and this script calls for a sermon by chief rabbi philip e mcneal a grandfather abraham and i'm i'm still debating brother whether to have saint khadija to step in for me but let us now get serious and turn to the reason that we have we have come together and that is to worship and praise the god of our salvation and we will have the call to worship at this time by saint rachel crowley vulcans to the house of israel giving honor and praise to this true and living god to chief rabbi philip e mcneil grandfather abraham to the ministerial body to the sons and daughters of grandfather abraham all hail is it well with thee all is well thanking god for allowing us to assemble on this beautiful sabbath day on this special occasion to usher in the blue and brown the change of seasons the change of heart a change of spirit a change of mind changing hate into love changing weakness into strength turning our sad days into good days we cannot survive in this world without changing and we cannot survive in this church without changing change is a part of life i get it can be scary going into something totally foreign leaving behind everything you know to evolve and shape into the person god wants you to be to be the person strong enough to help lift up others instead of putting them down but look inside yourself right now it's a time of reflection ask yourself is this who i really want to be stuck in this moment am i really happy the way that i am is this who god wants me to be or is something missing is there something i can do to become who god wants me to be the answer is yes and now is the time as we change the outward we must also change our mind and our hearts because we cannot live like this any longer how many times are you going to write the same sins on your piece of paper over and over again how many times have you looked back and that list has only gotten longer we are killing ourselves why are you treating yourself with medicine that will not work when the real medicine has always been right in front of you it's always been there having a deeper and more spiritual relationship with god and each other and holding ourselves accountable when we don't we need to change because we will keep hurting if we don't saints now ask yourself the question how do we change well first let's start by doing the one and only thing god has asked of us the one thing praising his holy name the psalmist said it best in psalms chapter 1 and 50 in its entirety praise you the lord praise god in his sanctuary praise him in the firmament of his power praise him for his mighty acts praise him according to his excellent greatness praise him with the sound of the trumpet praise him with the sultry and harp praise him with the timbrel and dance praise him with strained instruments and organs praise him upon the loud symbols praise him upon the high sounding symbols let's everything everything that hath breath praise the lord praise ye the lord saints we are called to worship house of israel please pray for me as i continue to pray for you oh oh [Applause] [Music] uh [Applause] [Applause] [Music] oh [Applause] oh [Applause] crazy [Music] amen amen and now let us worship we'll turn the service into the hands of elder william billingsley of roanoke virginia guys speak all these words saying i am the lord thy god which have brought thee underlined out of the house of bondage thou shalt have no other gods before me [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] beyond [Music] uh [Music] glories very fine service and i'm impressed by the fact that we were able to hear from the choirs in each of our districts here in the united states and and that beautiful choir from es watini this is truly a family affair an international family affair thanking the lord for the very fine narration from ella billingsley and sister thompson of brooklyn and i love that that nice that that nice duet responsive reading that was that was sweet brothers and sisters the lord is the lord is good i i don't know i don't know what you're thinking about the lord is good and his mercy is everlasting and now let us turn to the reading of the scripture for today to be read by saint susianna anderson of los angeles california saint susianna our scripture lesson is taken from hosea 14 verses 1 through 7 and micah 7 chapter 7 verses 18 through 20. o israel return unto the lord thy god for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity take with you words and turn to the lord say it unto him take away all iniquities and receive us graciously so we will render the calves of our lips as assurer shall not save us we will not ride upon horses neither will we say any more to the work of our hands yea we ye are our god for in the fatherless final mercy i will heal their backsliding i will love them freely for thine anger is turn away from him i will be as the dew unto israel he shall grow as the lily and cast forth the roots of lebalon his branches shall spread his beauty shall be as the olive trees and his smell has lit libyans they shall dwell under his shadow they shall dwell under his shadow shall return they shall receive as the corn and grow as the vine the scent thereof should be of the wine of lebanon who is god like unto thee that pardons iniquity and passes the transgressors to the remnant of his heritage he retains not his anger forever because he's delighted in mercy and he will return again he will have compassion upon us he will subdue our iniquities and those who will cast all their sins into the depths of the street see thou will be performed the truth of jacob and the mercy of abraham which the eye has sworn unto our father from the days of old allah [Applause] behold the lord is [Music] from the beginning [Music] from the foundation of the lord [Applause] is is [Applause] is [Music] is [Music] is black and white from the beginning is is is of the earth from the beginning amen i'm sorry about the delay but i was i was up prancing and had to readjust the camera after i sat down to the house of israel i'm giving thanks praise glory and honor to the best of my frail ability so this god that we serve the god of abraham the god of isaac and the god of jacob this god from whom all blessings flow and regardless of what we're going through during these trying times the blessings of the almighty continue to flow continue to overtake us and we continue to have something to be thankful for i'm acknowledging the officers and members of this great congregation church of god and saints of christ in this country and as in in other countries i'm thankful for the opportunity to worship and fellowship with you on this beautiful sabbath day we're broadcasting on our youtube channel from canaanland belleville virginia this land that god gave to us through god's prophet william saunders crowd thanking the lord for the coming and the sending and the receiving of prophet william saunders crowding for without his coming we wouldn't have knowledge of this great way of life that we enjoy today thank the lord for letting us reach this this milestone if you will uh this this sabbath shuffle sabbath between the day of remembrance and the day of atonement this sabbath is coming really exactly midway between those two ordained days as we say we've we've come this far as the song says we've come this far by by faith leaning on the god of our salvation trusting in his holy word for truly he has never has never failed us so we're on a journey so to speak brothers and sisters from from rosh hashanah to yom kippur i i liken it to the journey that abraham made from caldea to mount moriah i suggest to you that life life itself is is but a journey a journey along some road and i contend with you that in the final analysis there are only there are only two roads that one can journey in this life the road to god and the road away from god saint cathedral suggests that there's only two directions toward god and away from god but like it or not brothers and sisters there are two roads and either you're either you're coming or you're going either you're coming to god or you're going away from god and that's one of the lessons of this of this season turn from running and start running towards this dichotomy of of two roads it's sort of supported supported by a well let me put it this way this this this two road dichotomy can be expressed in a couple of scriptures the first scripture the call to your attention is luke chapter 15 verses 11 through 24. you recognize that scripture that's the prodigal son scripture luke chapter 15. and the second scripture is the one that we that saint suziano read that hosea scripture hosea chapter 14 verses 1 through 7. and those uh two scriptures can are are supported by a by a third scripture over in matthew chapter over in matthew chapter 13 i believe matthew chapter 13 where jesus said broad is the path some writers say smooth and wide is the path that leadeth to destruction and many there be who who walk on that road that that that that road is is that's that road is full of folks they say narrow is the path that leads to life indeed to life eternal narrow and straight and sometimes hard and rough that that road leading to destruction tends to be downhill full of people heading down but that narrow road that leads to life is uphill straight narrow and few there be the scripture said that find it and walk there on so i so so indulge me a little bit with the with these two scriptures luke chapter 15 that's that familiar parable of the of the prodigal son prodigal what's the word prodigal mean some people say wasteful the wasteful son but you know the story this father in the parable and of course a parable is just an allegorical story that has hopefully has a has an object lesson a metaphorical lesson involved but in this story there's a father who has has two sons and he promises to allocate to his two sons a portion of his of his goods and the younger son as as second sons tend to do got a little restless and he's and he said father give me mine now i can't i can't wait get give me mine now let's do you have a second son in your in your family is it familiar give me mine now and the father patiently allocated the son's portion to him and the son got on on the road he he got on road number one and and that road led him to a to a far place and in that far place he did all kinds of things and eventually he squandered he squandered his inheritance and the scripture says with riotous living he he must he must have had of all he wasted or wasted or squandered all of the goods that his father had given him and that road that road led him to a a place of devastation that led him to uh to hunger and led him to the low position of having to take care of pigs and swine led him in in a word and i've heard one preacher put it this way led him to the pig house now this alleged this this this parable is allegorical it's metaphorical the the father in this story i think is is pretty well understood the father in this story is god almighty the father's house in this story is can be regarded as the place where god dwells it's a pain it's a place of love and place of peace place of joy and abundance and fulfillment and and the road in this story is the road that the sun took away from god away from the father and as i said he he must have had plenty of company right that road was that road was smooth well paved easy to go down and and it was downhill the far country was some distant place far away from god as the song said he he had wandered far from god song says paths of sin too long he tried and and the pig pen that place of devastation the pig pen is nothing but a place of torment despair and disappointment and devastation i don't know you you might you might call it you might call it hell because it seems to me that he caught hell in that place in that in that place far away from god and who is the prodigal allegorically speaking who is the prodigal in that story well the prodigal in that story it seems to me is you and i you and i we you and i have a tendency to travel down that down that road far far from god and some of us have wandered far from god and thank god he's given us this this period to hopefully to hopefully stop this this descent down that road and some of us have gone down this road so far that we're almost out of the out of the reach out of the shadow out of the reach of the almighty of course his reach is infinite you can't you can't get out outside of his reach the scripture in in isaiah 59 and 1 in that song we just heard the lord's hand is not shortened that he cannot save and neither is his hair heavy that he cannot hear but that scripture says your iniquities your iniquities have separated between you and your god and your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear some of you you and i are in this or in in this in this boat and there's a companion scripture that i found over in jeremiah chapter 5 and verse i think is verse 20 verse 25 24 and 25. in verse 24 it describes some some good things that the that the lord has for israel but then in verse in jeremiah 5 25 it says your iniquities have turned away these good things and your sins have withholding good things from you is that you is that me yes that that's that's you you you and i are guilty if you break god's commandments and and we and we break them all the time if you break god's commandments if you lie and cheat steal and hate slander engage in malicious gossip lust and murder even if it means assassination of somebody's character then you and i are on that bad road and the scripture that that leadeth to destruction on the wrong road going away from god these are beautiful garments that we're wearing today this this white that i have on and these beautiful brown uniforms those are nice but if they are used to promote conceit and arrogance and vanity and and heavy-handedness divisiveness then i don't care how good we look you and i we're on that road that road to destruction in a more in a more practical in a more practical thing how how many of you are still on that stuff i don't have to say what stuff it is everybody's on some kind of stuff but if you own that stuff you're on the wrong road you're heading to the pig pen in quotes and you may be headed and you may wind up in the pig pen without a liver without kidneys indeed without a brain if you own that stuff you on the wrong road let's let's let's put it a little more plain if you're addicted to those pork chops and those ham hocks you can't get enough of those ham hocks and pork chops you're on the wrong road and you may wind up in the quote pig pen with diabetes with high blood pressure with heart with heart trouble if if the church if if our congregation is not does not rise up and live out its true mission namely the fostering of the love of god the love of and the uplifting of broken humanity feeding the hungry clothing the nectar healing the sick if we're not living out our true godly mission the church itself the congregation itself is on that bad road and is leading to destruction and maybe to distinction if this great country of ours to take it take it a little higher if this great country of ours as strong as it is as powerful as it is does not rise up as martin luther king said does not rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed what's that greek we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal that all of its citizens should have the equal opportunity for life and the pursuit of happiness if this country is not living out is true it itself is on the wrong road and it's heading to destruction yes brothers and sisters the prodigal son and you and i have a tendency to be on the wrong road but but the message of this season the the message of this season is that you if even if you own the wrong road you don't have to stay on you don't have to stay on the wrong road and and the prodigal son in this story did not stay on that wrong road he he had as it were a a moment of clarity can i put it that way a moment of clarity the script said he came to himself his his memory of the goodness of his father his memory of the of of the peace and the love and the fulfil and the and the plenty in his father's heart that that memory it seems to me he he had a he had a he had a day of remembrance he had a yom he had a yom ha sicaron and he remembered how good it was in his in his father's house he had he had as it were an isaiah moment where he said woe is me for i am a man of unclean lips and he had what i like to call a a ray charles moment he had a ray charles moment i'm thinking of ray charles classical song georgia on my mind i was going to have him play this but we can't play it in this in the sacred in the sacred setting but but it but but down in that song and it comes to one part where it says other arms other arms reach out to me those are the arms that are ushering you down the wrong road other eyes smile tenderly those are the enhancement the in the enticements that you get on that on that bad road they want you to come down but he says still in peaceful dreams to me those are those are the memories and peaceful dreams i see the other road the road that leads back to you and and the georgia in my in in my metaphorical notion that georgia is god himself the road leads back to the god himself so in this prodigal story the the prodigal son entered into what what amounts to phase two can i put this way phase two of the isaiah religious experience and in that phase two if you recall that that involves self-introspection uh humility and confession and repentance regret and you and and you you you can you can see it if you go to loop let's see if i can find it here and you can see it if you go to luke 15 where it says and when he came to himself when he came to himself he said how many hired servants of my fathers have bread enough to eat and so on and i perish with hunger he said i will arise he said to me that's like that's like that's like a prayer i will arise and go to my father and say unto him father i have sinned there's confession i've sinned against heaven and sinned against thee and and there's an element of humility in there i'm i'm not worthy i'm not worthy to be called your son so he so so so he so he so he had an an isaiah moment that isaiah moment that occurred in in the middle passage as i've been as i've been saying between remembrance and atonement and he decided he said i'm he said i'm i've decided i'm i'm going i'm going home he said i'm going to get on another road that's heading back to god and he started up this this good road and the scripture said he didn't get far along this this new road before his father looked out and saw him coming and his father came down from the house and came down to help to usher him up the road and and brothers and sisters that that's that's the message of this season if if you if you decide through humility and through repentance through confession that you want to turn to get on that that second road the lord himself will assist you you you don't have to go far the lord himself will assist you and that's where that second that's where the second scripture hosea comes in he says israel return for thou has fallen take with you the words and turn to the lord and say unto the lord take away iniquity receive us graciously and over in verse four in in in hosea chapter 14 it says and and and the law and and the lord's seeing that you have a mind to turn to him says okay okay i'll come down and help i will heal their backsliding i will love them freely for mine anger is turned away from him i'll be as the dude the branches will spread and they that dwell under the shadow though though they aren't there shall return and revive and grow as the vine but it is clear from joel chapter 2 that this return this going up the right road though the lord is available for assistance it's an individual thing that one has to participate in for in job chapter 2 and verse 12 it says therefore saith the lord turn ye even to me with your heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning and rend your heart and not your garments and turn to the lord your god for god is gracious god is merciful god is of great kindness look it's interesting to look up the hebrew for those three words gracious merciful and kind and he will assist why now you go over to micah chapter seven why micah chapter seven why because he delighteth because he delighteth in mercy and and if you turn and start up that road that narrow road that leads to him he will turn verse 19. he will turn again and he will have compassion and he will usher you along that road but that's the message brothers and sisters of this of this sacred season you and i have have have wandered as the song says far from god but the message of this season is beckoning you and beckoning me to to come home to get on the right road that road that leads to god we we've want we've wandered far enough and now it's time to come home and receive the blessings that the lord has in store for us it's time to get on road number two and road number two sometimes is is it's a little tough it's a little tough it's not that wide easy road that that's downhill it's a little tough it's up here you're going up but but the lord is available the lord is available to assist your journey to him come unto me the scripture said all you that labor and are heavy laden i will give you i will give you assistance right i will give you rest two two roads two two entities as one said that they're only the only two two men doing business to two entities that one has to face in life the the one entity is described in over in revelation somewhere where it says behold i stand at the door and knock and if any man hears my voice and i'll come in and i'll assist you to get on the right road but but that but there's another entity trying to pull you downhill it's described over in that that story of cain and abel where where lord told told cain that there's no reason for him to sin and suggested that there was sin at the door just waiting on him to do the wrong thing so brothers and sisters i i encourage you to get on that road get on with prayer get on it with reading the scripture get on it with fasting with humility with confession with introspection during that that middle passage that we have between between rosh hashanah and yom kippur and to offer a sacrifice to the god of your salvation to as a marker of your of your good intention and i guarantee you the lord will come and assist to usher you into true reconciliation true atonement true oneness with him so get so get so get on that get on the right road i think there's a song that get on the right road and i and others who are commissioned to to lead and to help should be available and are available to assist in this in this in this turning that saint cathedral said it must happen in this turning first and then to step out heading heading god heading heavenly i pray and i ask the lord to give you a mind to turn from your wicked wicked ways to to a mind for us to turn from our wicked ways and to get on the path get on the right road towards him i pray that this this this season of repentance this this season of introspection will result in a new path for you and a new path for me and certainly god is there to assist in in the effort i'm asking the lord to bless you and to keep you i'm asking you to i'm asking the lord to give you a successful a successful a successful atonement experience and when we come when we and when we come out of that experience i'm expecting you and i to decide that we're going to walk a different path that we're going to make ourselves available for god's work we're going to pray we're going to pray without ceasing we're going to assist our fellow man and we're going to walk upright in the presence of the almighty god the lord bless you and the lord keep you this is my prayer and he showed me a pure river of and she yielded her food every month every month and the leaves [Music] of the nations hold on come shall be i am alpha and omega the beginning behold i come quickly and my reward is with me to give every man according as his world shall be i am alpha and omega the beginning [Laughter] is the spirit and the [Music] is [Music] [Music] whosoever will let him is hold i come quickly and my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be i am alpha and omega the beginning and me the beginning [Laughter] amen and amen thanking the lord for this for the service i want to remind us that we have some traditions associated here in the house of israel with the service we'll we'll have a a beginning of the beginning of the yom kippur service on wednesday evening at six o'clock we'll have a prayer service on thursday morning at the 10th hour at 4 a.m we'll have a morning service at 10 am and then in the afternoon we'll have an afternoon service in which i as high priest of this congregation will go into the holy of holies and pray for the sins of this people as as mandated by scripture our tradition is that we those those who who wish to do it are encouraged to write down confessions confessions that i won't see or nobody in my office will see but you're confessing not to me but confessing to god and i encourage you to take take the time to take inventory of yourself see what road you own and write down your confessions and send them in we'll be receiving those those uh confessions uh up to um well up up to up to wednesday we will be receiving those and of course our tradition and our practice is that we'll burn symbolically burn those confessions on yom kippur day um attendant to those professions we're encouraging you to submit a sacrificial offering as mandated by the scripture um to me that that offering is just an act of sincerity showing the law that you are serious about trying to change your ways and trying to get on a different road to him so i encourage you to write your confessions and get them to my office by let's say by wednesday of next week the practice of the the high priest going into the holy of holies to pray is is simply a a gesture that the scriptures mandate that the high priest calls on the lord asking the lord to hear his prayer and hear yours to wipe away those those sins to clean the slate for the individuals so that they can start the start the the new season with a a new frame of mind a a rebirth a rebirth of sorts i i've lost i've likened it to the to the birth of a brand new baby i want to see some brand new babies running around here in the house of israel we talked about we talked about the road away from god uh when when when the child is born the the child comes out with with no sin right the child is as close to god as as one can get dependent on god and i've thought on occasion that the the first spank that that child receives puts him on the wrong road [Laughter] but in his own little way he starts cursing and and and the child's life without instruction without encouragement without bringing bringing him up in the admonition of god the child the child stays on that road away from god until he has the frame of mind until he has the spirit to turn that same candida put it so well to turn and turn back to the god that created him that's you and me rosh hashanah to yom kippur so i'm thinking thanking the lord for for sen for sending us a prophet lord have mercy for sending us a prophet who gave us the opportunity to participate in this great progression from rosh hashanah to yom kippur so as we close this service i again let you know that i'm in prayer for you for your families i'm certainly in prayer for our young people that there was one illustration that i meant to include in my sermon i forgot to do it i meant to say to to the children if you don't obey your parents if if you don't if you're not diligent in your schoolwork you're on you're on the wrong path right you're on the path to to certain destruction perhaps incarceration right but i'm certainly in prayer for our young people our young people have a have a tough road to hold during these days and we need to bring them to us and nurture them and love them and bring them along in the admonition of the god of our salvation i'm praying that the return to school will be safe and and productive and some of us are going back to work because of the of certain mandates that have been made some of us going back to work after a long time i'm asking the lord to be with you and to put his arms of protection around you as you go back to the workplace but i caution each and every one of us to beat to be careful wear those masks stay out of large crowds i recommend you don't go to these football games that's my recommendation where large crowds are gathered of course you you know you do what you want to do but that's my recommendation but i'm certainly in prayer for you asking for god's protection asking for his mercy and his blessings on each and every one of us so as we close this service i want to again thank the lord for his goodness and his mercy and letting us have this virtual shabbat shiva service it didn't have to be thank you my father take this opportunity to thank all of the participants who did such a beautiful job the sabbath school was magnificent i i love that call to worship i'll get a name wrong saint rachel i started to say leah coming to us from that heartfelt that heartfelt call to worship she had some good instructions in there for each and every one of us thanking the lord for the splendid narration by elder i'm thinking
