246 Wood-turning the $57,000 *Crown* of the root of all evil !!!

hello there and welcome to my workshop and welcome to this woodturning of the crown of the root of all evil of course this is the other end of that tree that I turned up the other day and you seem to like that one so well this is the crown of that tree and it's a very interesting piece actually and it's very very hard wood nicosia is really dried out and have a bit of trouble cutting this one is actually a little bit worse than what the root Bowl was so the way that I'm going to turn this one off I'm going to put it between centers that's a spur drive center which is up at the the headstock end and I've got a live Center then down at the tailstock and that's the end nearest camera so I'm stared into a machine off the over add bits they're all sort of sticking out and get him down to sort of should we say reasonable material and I've actually turned to a roughing gouge here to remove some a little quicker so what i'm doing here is rounding off the the end and I've just made tenon on this so I can turn it around and catch all of it in the hole jaws of the Chuck and that there you go that's what I'm doing right now I'll bring the tail stock up support the the other end then and I can really get into it [Music] I'm using a spindle gouge the moment at some a little bit more sort of concentrated it's a smaller cutting blade then and you know you get rid of material fairly quickly and accurately and I'm using a round nose scraper now to to finish off because you'll see in a minute what I wanted to do was I wanted to leave some of the inclusions and the back in the sidewall it made it look rather menacing so I've got a 5/8 spindle gauge now and I'm starting to take out the inside and hollow out the bars all hollow form whatever you really want to call it this is the crown of evil [Music] this without doubt is some of the hardest wood I've turned for a long time is right up there with Jarrah which is another Australian wood and it's really really tough going better keep on chef and in the the tools all the time [Music] actually was so tough going but I got my carbide tool out and I started to hollow it with that I don't use the carebye tool very often I don't know why I probably should use it more than I actually do but as it as it has its purposes and in this case I used it all right on this [Music] [Music] this in fact is one of my favorite tools are hollowing things out and that is a pattern after all actually it's very very rigid and of course it has a very narrow machining cross-section so it's it's most unlikely to grab and ruin your piece so providing you can get it in there it's a very good tool you can see it's very small chips coming off and like I say doesn't it doesn't tend to grab [Music] having got rid of the center I went back to my spindle gouge and just just took out the little nub that was left and then we really start to go to town with hollowing out [Music] [Music] so after I've used my inch and a half spade bit to take the majority of material out of the center it just makes the job a lot more easier gives you a good stat and then I get my five eighths Bowl gouge and hollow the rest it with that [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I have had literally hundreds of emails asking me exactly what this coating is well it's 49% Lindsay boiled linseed oil and another 49% of cedar oil and about 2% of just a stain really of of what you found see I suppose so um there it is you know there's no great secret to it but the effect is is very pleasing you know I like that sort of redness in it - well it just sort of brings the brings a better sort of tone over the wood so I hope you've liked this video today and if you have please press like and subscribe to my channel and you know there's I think 200 and it's actually 300 videos now between the two channels that I have so I hope you pop in again and have a look at one of my other videos on this particular channel I do a lot of CNC work in actual fact we manufacture CNC rotors and wood lathe so there's that and we also manufacture and I do a lot of tuition on lasers so um thank you for watching and please call in again and have a look so it's bye for now [Music] [Music] you [Music]
