well on the way up to Maine uh since it's right off I95 uh I'm going to stop there's this woman up there jod uh she's doing her own roof and her own flashing work on her chimney and she called me and had some questions about it and I'm going to stop and see if I can help lead her in the right direction so uh she's really interested in doing it herself and anytime that anyone is interested in doing stuff like that themselves like uh I love it I think uh I I love when people can do stuff on their own house and you know especially a roof like the quality of roofs in my area now are so bad like any homeowner could pick up a bundle of shingles read the directions on a bundle of shingles and probably do a better job than the roofers around here so uh pretty happy to see she's uh you know able to to do her own roof and she's not intimidated by it uh and her own flashing so she's having trouble on the back of the chimney I guess she's flashed up both sides a big chimney uh so just where she turns the corner in the back and then up the cricket so we're going to stop in I got probably an hour and a half drive to get to her place uh we're going to stop go over things maybe I can lay out the chimney uh what she needs to do uh and then I'm going to be on my way up to Maine hey everyone this is Jodie hey heyone jod is doing her own roof here and she is uh asking for a little help on her flashing job uh Jody what made you think you could do your own roof um because I love being outside and I know how to use a hammer I'm do you have a background in construction uh no although I grew up farming so I have a background in working hard do you think that this roof uh is there any chance that this roof is going to leak sure every roof will how did you learn how to do it um well I write read instructions um I got on YouTube there you go and YouTube was I just said Hey how do I figure this out I get really tripped up when it came to the flashing part though um I mean I feel like every roof's going to leak and it might as if it leaks because I did it wrong there's only one person to be mad at there you go um I think uh for for me like I feel like Roofing is pretty easy and you can learn a lot of it on just the instructions on the on the wrapper right yeah totally um and cutting shingles and laying the shingles is definitely not difficult right getting the straight line and going for it but so so this roof is super easy anybody could do that yeah but when you get into when you get into um like where your Dormer comes in there sometimes that stuff gets a little tricky and flashing up against these walls right yeah and it's where we had leaks so I knew that it needed attention yep um and I was worried that if I just hired a roofing company they would just come in and throw a new shingles on but not fix the problems that I've been struggling with and I'm sick of having big storms come through and my ceiling's getting wet well how did you the other day we got all that rain yeah nothing I even climbed around in my attic nice and there was nothing in there I was pretty excited very cool except for I needed to call out for the big guns because I wasn't sure about the chimney well I'm actually I'm excited to come out here and help because I love when people can do their own work um there's no reason why somebody can't do their own roof I get why some people don't want to go 30 40 ft in the air cuz they're just petrified to Heights but you wouldn't believe the kind of money people spend on roofs like this uh I see it every day and the roof jobs are just they're done so fast and so poorly uh that you've just literally pretty much thrown money away you know yeah in quotes we estimates we're getting anywhere from 14,000 to 22,000 wow just for this yeah and and to fix the the flashing and to do fix St flashing and I thought jeez I priced it out and I could get everything for 6,000 6500 6500 for material yeah I'm probably closer to 7,000 now because I had done a few things and then was like oh I need to yank it out and redo it yeah so but that's how I learned and now I feel like a pro yeah now you could actually make money doing it I know right if my knees could hold out yeah um okay so you did the um you left the flashing on here coming through but you said you got some ice and water Shield up under here even though it was was a little bit yeah I used the trick I saw in your other video and I got this piece of metal and I gave it back so it didn't fold forward and I got when the when this lead was out I took it and I tucked it back under and then I pinned it down with a couple Nails I overlapped it you know I started at the bottom all the way up and then I pinned them down just with a couple nails so it it's stable and it's behind this lead and I took the grace ice and water and put it around and tucked it up underneath so that this the um aluminum here is holding the in the air behind it and then it's nice and stable then I folded the the lead down perfect and and so on this one uh you can't really use a tall piece of metal because she left the lead flashing and the lead flashing comes real close to the roof so uh she couldn't get a tall piece of metal in here so this this short piece of metal worked uh perfect in this spot yeah what I didn't realize and I just learned from you earlier is that this piece of lead from here actually extends all the way over behind it because I haven't had any of this pulled away I didn't realize you were saying that it's literally this metal that's behind here is my problem and that makes a lot of sense cuz I was struggling to get this behind it yeah so that gets really close to the roof in spots like an inch or something yeah or or maybe an inch and a half so you can't really lift it up out of the way to get the ice and water under so I had to lay flat on the roof and was upside down in there with that Grace on a hot day it was sticky but I managed to do it the whole way nice and no water through the chimney so far yep okay I'm not sure if this part up here this this is my I don't know what they had done here you could see there's inside my attic you can and there's we had a leak since we've bought the house you can see where this the um 2x4s inside have gotten wet over the years yeah and when we pulled all this off you can see there was all this tar but somebody had literally like cut the lead um like all the way it's gone oh they they cut it the bottom here against the roof line yeah so when I pull this up when we pull these up there's nothing under here but um the wood so I left all of these loose so we could yank them out yeah everybody's wondering what all this wax paper's for to let me know where it's not been nailed in so I could easily just grab them out oh that tar is actually on there pretty good now yeah right oh you know what you did shoot you know what you did you nailed this one on right here oh did I and P it in so right here under this one so this one comes out so when you nail this one what what happens when you nail this one it goes through the back of the one below it yeah right so you have to really fight to get that out now yeah so well if you want them to slip out what you have to do is lift this one and pop the nails out of the one above it if that makes sense because it's gone right to the back and that's how they're designed so if you put six Nails across the shingle you actually have 12 Nails in each shingle if that makes sense because it's going the six Nails across the back to so I've got work for myself now yeah a little bit more work but damn it it's all right so let's work we'll leave that there and we'll work on the cricket you you can redo these CS right yeah okay so what we've got go ahead it's also really early in the morning yeah so the shingles they don't come up easy when they're cold right no okay so you got the ice and water Shield here and it goes up the roof yep and it goes underneath up up here as well did you get this to tuck under I got it as far as I could this again is so close you'll see when we get in there there's not much yeah and did they they adhered all this stuff to the chimney as well yeah and it's full of car they've been trying to stop it for years here so what you're thinking is that this lead doesn't come far enough under and it really doesn't come that far under at all okay uh so what we're wanting to do is either um should we pull this out so we could either if this flashing has enough overlap we could either counter flash it I mean well we could we could cut this and and redo this counter flashing and weave it under or if this is good enough we could step flash it coming up and leave this lead which would be a lot easier for you yeah um and when I step flash like this I usually like to leave it or I I like to use the lead flashing and I just make little flashing cards out of it oh to yeah and then you go Up 3 in here and if you want to come out 5 in on this side or 4 in it depends on what kind of lead you have yeah and then you just put your little flashing cards in there as you go and you could actually leave this stuff on top uh and then you'll have your step flashing underneath yeah so you so if this is working right now you know just step flash under there as you as you come up with your shingle you put a flashing card under yeah just like a would step flashing on just like the aluminum cards over there yeah and I just use lead here because uh lead against lead is is better than aluminum against lead and then when you get to the corners here this this one will bend around the corner a lot better aluminum doesn't bend it just will tear around the corner you know okay I've had a hard time with do you not cut the lead cuz once you cut it it tears do you bend it just bend it real slow yeah so okay uh we'll rip this off and pull this uh we'll pull the lead up we'll grab I'll grab a couple tools and we'll pull the Le up and see see if we can do it uh with just some step flashing should I pull these out yeah okay all right so we've got a game plan here we're going to uh finish taking these two shingles out and this lead although it's a bit ugly uh we're going to we're going to reuse this and we're just going to step flash up up the back so what we're going to work on right now is getting some Edge metal on on here because there's there's a gap here so we're going to nail some Edge metal and we're going to redo this ice and water Shield up uh a little higher make sure we get it under this underlayment here um and then uh it's back to to Roofing so after I get the edge metal on and the ice and water Shield I've given her strict instructions on how to do the Cricut that's right and so she knows exactly how to to St flash this and put the new Cricut back on uh there were a couple issues that we noticed so some of the nails in the valley um so now when we've redo this we're going to make sure the nails stay out of the valley um and then also how to how to nail these uh how to nail these these shingles on that go in the Cricut um we don't want to nail in the valley we're going to nail higher and then we're going to nail higher here and stay out of the out of the valley great so we just redid this one put this step flashing folded it in and anchored it up here before we really got a fold on the bend and we got just this clearance here under this drape and then we had to get it around here to make the ear on that corner yeah and we nailed it way up way up top and out of my Val out that's why we made this piece of Step flashing so long so you know normally they're pretty short and we would be nailing it here close to the valley so we just ran it all the way up and the next piece of Step flashing uh can be much shorter than this because it's going to start up here somewhere anyway and get nailed once in the corner way out of the valley so we're going to do one more St flashing that's going to set yep like right about is the end right about here well wherever the shingle wherever the shingle comes so the shingle will come to the corner here right somewhere that somewhere like that right and your next piece will set on there like that so it can be much shorter piece and it GL Nails in over here y exactly and am I going to do two more of these you might do two more of those and then to get that and to get that bend over that that roof there so then the next one would be like that and then the top one would have like a little lip yeah so yeah we'll just kind of you'll you'll we'll cut from the corner kind of like you did with the ice and water shield and bend it up okay or and then bend it down and over yep and then this long one's going to be the same we're going to put it same on that side so you can we you can actually pin that right there with the nail and then we're going to bend it down and then bend that around the corner like that brang it into place yep and then step flash a couple up I have a question so when this last one's going to come up do you do that extra little Ridge thing that yes you do y so there's that extra one that comes this way and you just kind of fold it into place and it grops yeah and then that will come up and it only has to come up like an inch and if you only come well this one because the pitch is shallower you could come up higher you could come up an inch and a half maybe and still get that bend on without the metal ripping without the metal ripping on a steep uh Peak you have to go you can't go up high without the metal ripping you know what I'm saying yeah right EXA cuz then it's just going to keep tearing back and the whole purpose of it and so so then that will come over come up here an inch and a half and then this will fold down over it now some of this stuff is ugly so you're going to have to work on getting some of the tire off if you want um but it will be it will be ugly but uh functional and a lot easier than cutting it all in when I have these when do I fold these drapes in so I have another step flashing over top of you so step flash all the shingles in do everything first yep and and then this stuff can fold over top of it it's loose and and look uh you can you can leave it like that or you can cut it nice and clean so you can measure and have a uh and just do like a nice straight line with it if you have enough though cuz some of these are cut short so really short I say we just leave them if ugly is not a bad thing if you don't mind ugly just leave it ugly no one's going to look up here except me and you okay everybody on the internet it's going to be like oh my God they should have put new flashing in but that lady should have done it fancier yeah so do I use uh the ridge caps over this piece that way at the very end yep and they're going to tuck yep Up and Up and Under okay and these guys are going to tuck this one's going to come and if you have a problem with the ridge cap like cuz remember I said you got to slice the back of it to get it to bend here oh right the if you have a problem with that and it's going to hide you can take a piece of Grace as long as it's is going to hide like no if you got your ridge cap coming up right and you're going to have to put that cut in the back of the ridge cap so it so it VES out like that so it will bend down y um over that V you can put a piece of lead over that or you can put a piece of Grace over that if you have a hard time with it just to kind of like make it more stable just just so it's not ever a water problem in the future if we have water coming back up in here because of an ice dam or something you know totally y so then so then I go the the uh step flashing shingle so first first you got to put this shingle back in here the shingle that runs into the chimney this way K you know I think it yeah and I feel like it's too much now well I feel like you know what we should we should have um we got ahead of oursel and we probably should have put that shingle in under it under this under this piece yeah I went and nailed that piece down but this shingle really really how it should have went is this shingle should have went on and then and your cut goes up the back and then the step flashing so yeah I messed up on that one so we'll pull that nail and then uh so I'll just pull and then get and then we'll get these two shingles in now that we have got ice and water shield on but put these two back and then this piece bends over that this will go on and bang this guy in yeah would I just bang this guy in like here well no you got well just you get to you nail it on that side and whatever this side does let it leave leave this yeah just just yeah make sure that side's nice and straight before you nail this side of course and then and then nail it high and then that will hold this thing yeah you could do that too yep nail this one high here through the both and hold the top part in yeah cuz I can just give it well nail the shingle separate get the shingle nailed in so it doesn't move and then put the lead on yeah yeah but I again when I nail this shingle I stay out of the valley so out of the valley way up yep and then I'm going to tuck this guy in bang it around nail it banging around yeah and then take and take a look at where the take a look at where the water is coming out here okay yeah so now now when if you're up here you know where the you know where the water is going to be pouring out here so look look don't want to be nailing in here right so make sure you keep your nails back from you could go to there that's fine and then if you want to put an extra nail in just put it high up out of the way that makes a lot of so all the water runs and it doesn't rust out a nail somewhere you know MH so then this one's under here but you're saying that before I do the step shingles this gu's under here I'm going to need to put in this shingle yeah put in that shingle first so we'll have to get before I go like this okay Y and we'll get a couple new shingles yeah recut them but these are my my markers yep perfect okay that one then this then this one then a flashing and this I want these all probably to come over as close as I can before I start going up uh after after these ones these guys which goes in here and I have this guy I need to put back over yeah so what I would what I would say is what you want to do is you you put this one and put this down and then and then get your shingles to come up here first oh okay all of them step Flash the whole thing up yeah and they're going to be right up here and and then those ones will come over and those ones will be the cut on the valley okay does that make sense and no small pieces so You' got to stagger you got to stagger so you have cut them on the shape of the valley give it the triangle cut yes these guys yep and make sure there's no real short pieces cuz we don't want to we don't to have short pieces here just longer pieces like what you have is probably fine Y and then these ones come in and those ones will and these are already gone up so I don't have an underlay problem so then I can just cut a nice pretty line yeah exactly and then once that's all cut then I do my short based Ridge caps yep exactly so I'm wondering um when I fold this lead in and how when these come up and over I I understand that I need to have this flopping over the top and having this up high so it's covered by the ridge cap my concern is we weren supposed to put nails through thead very so when I'm anchoring this thead under it so the difference is between this lead and this lead is this lead is fixed to something that doesn't move okay okay this lead is fixed to something that moves okay your roof and your house move right that's why so when I put this lead on and I'm using this as the counter flashing and and I go under the shingle with it I don't want it to to nail to it because your house moves just slightly so it might wear on the lead over time this one moves with the house this one stays with the chimney so we're independent so if we get a couple nails through this not a big deal copy that makes a lot of sense the chimney is Stone so it's more stable this has to move with it and this is attached to the roof so it's okay yep that's cool all right yeah thanks for explaining that cool I'll send you photos along the way yeah I think you're going to nail it yeah it's going to be awesome thanks this has been so fun appreciate the early morning hey you know what I love this stuff if if you're doing your own stuff and I can help out just by giving a little advice I'm all about it well and then hopefully we can help up some other mom that wants to put I know right we need more women uh in the in the roofing industry that's what we need and the and the lead flashing masonry industry meticulous of the details yeah you're going to be a leading example for everyone now that's right I got a whole new career ahead of me shining down on me feel good I believe sh [Music] down
