the term user is an understood and accepted word in the knife world however user implies the existence of another category of knives you own but you'd never use now through your screens I see them heads in Aden it's all very clear you have your safe Queens and these are your users now I have occasionally deployed the word when communicating with other knife pros hi I would like to borrow this knife for a review but is it a user do I need a box of nitrile gloves is to not give it a snail trail when field testing it through a log so then I guess a knife like the deadlock here clearly Falls in the quote safe queen category and I don't really like that word but I think tool REE as a word makes a little more sense and makes me sound kind of clever see jewelry is kind of a useless accessory that people buy to make them feel special and pretty and on the other hand tools have a utilitarian function which is being a collection of rarely used things in your garage you leave your children to fight over when you die you may have been an average father but damn you had some nice tools it'll make up for it right another way to look at it is how car enthusiasts have a daily driver acknowledging they also have a secondary classic or high-performance car they drive sparingly but for fun we call those sorts of cars Miatas but my hope is you get that a deadlock is a functional piece of jewelry you mean like a damn and pinkie rare heart necklace well yeah okay but more appropriately like watches to Lhari oh boy am i smart you may not need it but it makes you feel special and pretty in a tactical way Tori so what makes a deadlock special why does it cost so much when you can buy an importer cheap out the front for under 50 or you know you're on the American kick you have out the Front's here from mid-sized to large companies like micro tech Guardian tactical and benchmade that started around 250 but you're more likely to pay 350 to 550 for your favorite pretty color and blade style you know don't even ask about the hand rubs those are gonna cost you Hawk on the other hand is a much smaller company that until recently was just father and son grant and Gavin in India you have to pay more for a product for a smaller company that has slower processes or can't scale up manufacturing processes like large companies can so I guess you're paying for some inefficiency there or probably a better word for that I don't know what it is because I don't have a lot of words that said even after their modest hiring of new employees a deadlock is made in Idaho by a still tiny company is it safe to say under one roof I haven't seen the building I don't know it's a design that has been refined over the years and has a unique patented mechanism that gives it smooth operation and a solid lockup which is actually not something seen in other out the fronts they're made in small batches with high-end materials have near-perfect quality control and warranty service but you don't have to take my word for it though because if you treat a knife real nice it holds its resale value on the secondary market but before we go any further I know I've been talking a long time already let's take a look at the dimensions of the batch 7 carbon fiber deadlock like the overall length and weight the version seen here the marbled carbon fiber is about $1,350 yeah shipped which is probably twice the credit limit on your current 22% interest rate credit card blade sizing cutting edge skipping this could have got me about halfway to a new editing computer I realize that cranking out some 4k product reviews handle size and grip area you know the dryness of my hands can really only be appreciated in 2160p on your cell phone spine thickness and handle thickness it really would have brought the channel into the age of pestilence known as 20/20 tallness --is but for now because of my purchasing decisions you'll have to deal with my awkwardly cut fingernails in just 1080p Hawk offers a knife and basic trims of carbon fiber and titanium and two or three different finishes of those materials as much as we like to hear me drone on about the options for the next five minutes for now please visit their website for more info if you want to buy the snipe you'll need to sign up for their newsletter that's the only way look below the video or the link to their website otherwise wait for some capitalist warrior bar to sell one for 1500 bucks on reddit's knife swap accompanied by eight paragraphs of flowery prose do taling why he deserves a finder's fee Saharawi deserve the hock is currently on batch eight of the deadlock and the one seen here is batch seven and marbled carbon-fiber there are no real design changes between these two batches other than new pretty color options for the switch and textured inlays starting with the blade because I want to feel like hot [ __ ] I opted for the double edged dagger instead of the single edge because you know the deadlock looks weird with a single edge finishes bead blasted and the blade looks to my eyes to have an ever so slight cave inward is it a hollow grind I don't know I'm not really a knife guy the blade is made from what I think is the current knife hassle favourite crucible 20 CV 20 CV is according to blade HQ chart gonna have a long lasting edge and decent corrosion resistance remember youngins toughness is a blades ability to resist breaking or chipping blades with higher hardness or edge wear rating will often trade off in toughness they chip easier or break easier that said the steel is the raw material the heat treat and hardness are dependent upon the manufacturer or who they get to heat treat their blades for him so the charge is a guide only the blade was razor sharp out of the box with a good-looking even blade grind that I knocked $200 off the resale value of by dinging the tip on my glass computer screen because I was [ __ ] around which brings us to the rare or can I say singular achievement of the deadlock compared to other out the front switch blades it's about the only salad out the front because of years of concentration on refinement of the parts and the mechanisms inside the knife some companies will spend their time designing new and unique ugly knives or adding jade scales to existing products however the Hawks have been working on making this one perfect for years the actuation of the blade with the switch has a certain sound and smoothness a typical out the front doesn't the blade has no play partially due to the precision tolerances of the opening and how the blade locks internally that's the patented part I can't say play generally hurts the performance of a standard out the front since they're kind of toys but it's something you tube knife review artists often harp on about I'll link a podcast below if you're into the sort of thing we're at Grant and Gavin talk about the deadlock patent law pricing stabilizing horse hooves and Chris Reeve before is disappearing act off the public stage and they talk about these things for about two hours hey I found it interesting okay slide the button forward sneaked back shaked and then you can really get it going by strategic to get is substantially easier to actually can say an ultra tech or cheap a Casey as far as construction this one has a titanium frame that I paid the extra $100 for to get flame bowed that's not the technical term by the way the flats of the body on this deadlock or marbled carbon fiber but you can opt for the standard Honda hood weave of a regular carbon fiber you or you can get the whole other version that's heavier it replaces the carbon fiber flats with titanium the button and grip inlays all have very nice textured pretty perfect jimping friendly on the palm and finger meet because it gives friction without sharpness the body and hardware have all been chamfered in edges have been knocked down a knife comes with lube a Torx driver a velvet bag and some chapstick the deadlock is held together with hardened stainless steel screws which doesn't sound like that big of a deal except when you realize other unnamed but very Spyderco light companies use cheap soft screws that often strip out it's just not Spyderco okay they would rather you to not ever be able to remove the screw because you've stripped the head rather than break it it's very smart the knife itself is comfortable to hold and provides an excellent hand fondling experience now the flamed titanium sections like the pocket clip or all the you know inlays are susceptible to cash depreciating scratches ensuring a mini meltdown the first time the frame grazes the rivets of your True Religions well told you you should have locked it in the safe out the front switch blades are not the best everyday carry knives because they tend to have to be broken down and cleaned and get all kinds of gunk and goo inside I prefer to use them as light everyday carry knives that are fun to fidget with deadlocks internal mechanisms have been attested to surpass 200,000 actuations so right about the time you go back to work the pocket clip the titanium pocket clip is a unique design to like someone pointed out on Instagram the hawks reappropriation stick chip clip technology pivots on a hinge and the idea is to hold securely to the pocket without destroying it on the other hand the evil rivets on your jeans your freedom ating seatbelt the swingset the mean garage floor or the tile tops of your kitchen counters will give you constant anxiety about resale value the irony of the deadlock is the people who will buy it are the same people who don't have one thousand dollars saved for emergencies how many dollars does each scratch remove the deadlock is kind of thick in the pocket it's not like you could afford to carry anything else in there anyway comparisons first the deadlock I don't like using the G word I think you know what the G word is but this was my ultimate pocketknife I had a trouble choosing between the titanium and which type of carbon fiber and then also not spending the money I had saved hey at least we're no longer in suspense about any of those things what I sell it what I really like it what I use it turns out I love it my heart still wonders what the titanium would look like in my hands and in my pants it's smooth all the parts are solid there's no blade play no switch rattle the pocket clip is easy on the pants sometimes I hear a spring rattle when I shake it that I hear on the inside maybe it's a piece of dirt maybe it's my imagination or the first stage of degenerative brain disease even though it came with a Torx bit I have yet to disassemble it though now let's compare it to the ultra tech Bounty Hunter switch is rough on the finger meat not as easy to actuate there's blade play which is a comment on all out the Front's I've handled I like the way it looks though because Star Wars it's lighter but the quality between the two is pretty different both are very functional and the Bounty Hunter is a limited knife released rarely when you have the money for it costs about $325 new now the benchmade pagan it has a spring year mush ear and lighter touch of a switch I like the deadlock but it's a bit smoother of a knife than the ultra tech the knife has a decent handle feel but I'm not big on the full chisel blade because I'm not smart enough to a Shadid apparently this particular out the front is discontinued but cost in the mid 300s if I remember correctly now the AKC f-16 it's about 50 bucks and it's Italian made it's cheap painted kind of ugly lower end blade steel and materials fires really hard rattles like a micro tech has a very musical spring ring but it's a pretty good starter out the front there's a charm to it I think moving on standard out the side single action auto the hawk mud auto this was the USA made the company millet produced a knife and Hawk assembled it they're currently on hiatus but these cost about 400 bucks new now they're like 600 on the secondary market because of [ __ ] tax but I love it it's a bit chunky like the deadlock in the pockets thick but it's solid you can use it in the dirt and wet no blade play either let's see the sexy fool $45 bokor coalition acaba desert warrior this one's no longer available someone told me these go for 200 bucks now when they originally cost 40 now the standard kalashnikova is but not the color scheme seen here anymore it's pretty awesome fires hard harder than the Hawks that isn't necessarily a metric of a better Auto but one Instagram bro said the Hawks were almost too smooth they're too nice no thanks that's true some models feel like they'll fly out of your hand like hey for example the protec Don tiny and light fires hard about 280 bucks I think it's a touch more than my dad paid in child support in the 80s we're gonna wrap it up now as I sit here and finish writing I see the wall of text before me and realize I've already set a whole lot about a [ __ ] switchblade and wonder what that means compared to the size I wrote for my grandmother's eulogy I guess I like it okay like it's not something I can recommend to a casual knife person you have to be mostly insane and justify it because you have a hobby that sort of pays for itself is it worth it absolutely it is it wasn't you couldn't resell it for the same amount or more than you paid for it if you purchased the right knives you know they're better investments then say automobiles which are a terrible investment it's a collector's knife that doubles as a very functional pocketknife it's kind of thick in the pocket like I said earlier be nice if they slimmed it down and made it a little more refined but you know whatever you change because of the deadlock not the other way around but it is my favorite pocketknife in my whole collection was stuff like knives cars watches Victorian porcelain dolls the cave of evil what you have built up in your head is what you get out of it the first part starts with liking the looks if you don't like the looks you know you won't like it I mean you know even if you hated the looks holding it in your hand and using it especially when you have other switchblades as a reference it's on a whole other level it has a different sound feels different in the hand and it's pretty comparatively solid to any other switchblade and it fills that hole for about 24 hours it's serotonin melatonin you know what I'm talking about anyway if you like this sort of review which I guess this would technically be melatonin subscribe to the channel say hi to the patrons they're saying hi back they make the channel and the journey possible big thanks to you and all the
