Why Does Everyone Hate Haley?

hey everybody and welcome back today we're going to continue looking at the NPCs of stardew Valley that's been a minute huh last time we talked about the very exciting Harvey and today we're going to talk about the flower Queen herself it's Hayley's day in the Sun but isn't it always though Haley gets a lot of flack for being well Haley to new players but I really do think that she's one of the top tier marriage candidates in the game if you can handle getting there when you start the game Haley provides one of the least friendly introductions surpassed only by probably Shane but honestly I think people hyper fixate on Haley more than any of the other marriage candidates who also act rude to you in the beginning no one is exceptionally kind to you in the beginning and if we stick with our first impression I think most of us would only be friends with a select few members of the community even Linus who is one of the most beloved NPCs in stardew Valley basically tells you to leave him alone at the beginning of the game and no one is shooting eggs at his head for fun besides at least in my opinion one of the best attributes in a person is their ability to grow from their experiences and there is no one in Pelican Town who changes more over the course of their heart events than Haley before we get too far here though I just want to remind you that if you like the white knighting or I'm a Haley apologist or whatever down below anyway Haley lives with her sister Emily at two Willow Lane in a house that definitely could not support a family of four in its current layout despite their parents merely being on vacation no matter how long you play their parents will never ever ever return to the valley which gets a little weird after like three years but okay while Emily works at the saloon for an ungodly number of hours for a part-timer Haley kind of just floats around the town she takes pictures by the lake relaxes on the beach and spends time with Alex despite her hostile early dialogue this is actually my biggest pet peeve with Haley Abigail is taking classes online and every other marriage candidate is working in some way to provide for their household except maybe Elliot and Leah whose stories in later heart events revolve around monetizing their creativity and I mean who would do that what kind of weirdo tries to make money from their hobbies that is such a quick path to burn out and come to resent the things you once enjoyed and isn't it crazy how I used to do these videos once a week weird but Haley doesn't really do anything to support her family at two hearts she even argues about having to do one chore around the house Emily calls her out by saying she does way more for the two of them before the ball is put into your court for some reason Hayley will eventually agree to help out in the tiniest way possible but this is not a good look for her and if this were how Haley acted for the entirety of the game I would understand why people have such strong feelings about her like if I were single and moving to a new town and I hopped on stardew Valley's version of Tinder the wiki and on our very first like get to know you event some girl asked me why her sister makes her help clean the house I would simply move on and hang out with someone a little less whiny pretty much all of the dialogue around this point is rude conceited and self-centered and if this is where you checked out on Haley I kind of don't blame you she talks about shopping and how weird her sister is she insults you for basically no reason and she has zero empathy for your lifestyle as a farmer she is dare I say kind of a jerk right now and if you're playing casually and just talking to her randomly when you see her or giving her liked or neutral gifts you'll be stuck at this level of dialogue for a while I usually get decent hearts with her early because of the early birthday so it's not a huge portion of the game for me but let's be real if a normal human in your everyday life treated you the way that Haley treats the farmer you just simply wouldn't want to get any closer to her that's a fact unless you're like into that in which case you know what go wild Trend but I also have to wonder if her dialogue at lowered heart levels is at least slightly affected by the lack of her parents we know that they're not coming home anytime soon but how long have they actually been gone Emily will tell you they've been gone for two years in her dialogue but that dialogue never updates with the passing of time right so is two years just kind of a fill-in did they disappear from Haley and Emily's lives frequently I don't want to get too deep into the weeds here but Haley shows an initial hesitance to display any kind of emotional intimacy it actually takes a while for her to warm up to you and I'm curious if that might be because she's used to the people close to her not really being present she might just be protecting herself from future pain I mean even her sister who actually lives with her spends more time at work than at home not that I'm blaming Emily for having to pay the bills but it might explain why Haley doesn't really understand emotional security not to mention her best friend in town is Alex who has his own issues to work through it just really reinforces to me that the whole town needs a therapist her for heart scene isn't exactly a turning point for Haley either in fact it's kind of just a throwaway event for me you show up she asks if you're strong you can say yes or no and gain or lose friendship with her but I mean you open the jar either way then the next day she gets a tool to open jars in the future I I just don't really care about the scene is it supposed to show that she manipulates people that she's weak that the farmer is strong I have no idea so let's just move on at six hearts things do change though and I think that if you make it this far with Haley you'll probably appreciate her every marriage candidate has more lines added to their potential dialogue options at six and eight hearts but Haley undergoes a dramatic change her six heart scene is a very sweet one as well where she departs from the kind of vapid consumerism she exhibited before find Haley on the beach upset that she lost a bracelet Haley has frequently mentioned shopping in fashion before but this seems to be more important than just a lost accessory the bracelet is a Keepsake from her great grandmother and when you find it further down the beach and return it Haley will abruptly hug you and express her appreciation you don't have to see the scene to get her six heart dialogue but I always imagine that this situation is kind of what sparks a change in Haley it's here where she realizes that stuff isn't everything and you know what else it's not lame to care about things like your family or your community my only complaint here is that I wish it were a little bit more gradual but since you probably don't talk to her every day in a casual playthrough it might not be super apparent that she has done a complete 180 and now appreciates the country life eight hearts though this is the one this is just such an incredibly sweet heart scene Haley who we know loves photography and who has slowly grown more open to life in the valley wants to learn how to approach livestock over the course of several pictures you see her approach feed and climb on a cow then fall in the mud at two hearts Haley wouldn't have even considered doing this and even further into your relationship I think she would be upset that she got all dirty but at this point she's finally coming around to the idea that a pristine manicured lifestyle might not be something she wants to strive for she still doesn't get a job though so we've seen what I consider to be the most important pre-marriage heart scenes the 10 heart scene is cute but that's kind of all it is you check out her dark room and have the chance for a little smooch nothing groundbreaking here but Haley's post-marriage heart event is fabulous here we have the meme girl who didn't care about anything but shopping the beach and being hot and she wants to give back to her community she puts together a cakewalk which is something I have never heard of before this a bake sale meets musical chairs kind of anyway she puts together this whole event and then at the end reveals that it was all a fundraiser for the kids to get new books for their education Haley has never shown this kind of initiative before so it's really heartwarming to see her not only talk about taking an interest in the community but actually follow through by doing more for the kids than oh I don't know mayor Lewis ever has like seriously this event doesn't change anything in the world so it's not as impactful on gameplay as Alex's for example but it is so sweet so what's up with Haley this seems like a good story right the materialistic star becomes a humble Community staple I actually married Haley for the first time in a joja run like six years ago when I wanted that achievement for the first time because I thought she would be the perfect spouse for someone who wanted profit over everything but she's not she shows an exceptional amount of growth over the course the game and it really makes me wonder why people are so against her I guess I understand that you might not want to interact with her after a bad first impression and maybe people really don't want to give her the time to flourish I really can't understand how you can see those six and eight heart scenes and still hate Haley what do you think about Haley is she the best marriage candidate in stardew Valley or am I too biased toward her
