there is beauty all around us if we're willing to look hard enough to find it from the teetering edges of mountaintops into the teeming under brushes of the world's rainforests earth has provided us with creatures of all shapes and sizes to live alongside beauty comes in many forms votive that form just I don't know happens to look like a football field just absolutely chock-full of writhing crabs [Music] on the 13th of October 1998 cement carrier MV Goliath pulled into port in Sydney Australia with a large fish and bailed on its bow the fish was hit by the ship off the coast of New South Wales and forced it to slow from 14 knots to 11 knots what's more is that the skin of this fish was so rough that it tore off the paint from the ship's hull down to the metal in the end staff from the Australian Museum removed the fish which ended up weighing just under one and a half tons and stood 2.5 by 3 meters it's a fish the size of a Honda Civic in fact it's the largest bony fish in the world it's the ocean sunfish or as it is more often referred the mola mola bro-bro let me take this huh I did my own research and everything bull shark and through my research I've come to the conclusion that I hate this fish very very much oh hey it seems a bit strong but its body is just a big stupid pancake with two fins sticking out the top and bottom it's also got a single large rudder I call that Clavis to something I mean they're basically just a regular fish that got squashed real bad they can survive in both warm and temperate climates and they've even been seen in waters as cold as two degrees Celsius but that's just because the two don't just stick in one place when their environment gets too cold they swim to the surface lay flat to maximize surface area and soak up the sun's rays for warmth which sounds like a good idea but these idiot fish don't even have swim bladders you know the little sacs event the fish either used to float or sink they don't have it interestingly enough though the mola mola is tissue composition actually lends itself to maintaining neutral buoyancy no matter the depth regardless of a swim bladder yeah yeah whatever get this the mola mola will also surface to encourage seabirds like dolls or albatrosses to feast off the parasites burled in the skin which is disgusting yeah some scientists once found one that had 50 different parasites both inside and outside it's pointless floppy pancake body oh speaking of plankton the mola mola primarily consumes plankton jellyfish small crustaceans fish and Stena fours what's a Stena for you ask well let's ask the invertebrate Bert hey bean drop some of that grade a tardigrade knowledge oh thanks bean you always have the lowdown on which invertebrates are fresh and which ones are whack yes of course Thank You grill for that educational tirade but speaking of fresh invertebrates who doesn't love a fresh ocean sure do they have a name this is jury hi cherry everyone loves churros and this little guy is no exception they're they're a member of the species Zeno turbo litter oh because I kind of look like our favorite Spanish pastry but actually I have more in common with a sock than anything else you know if you don't mind chill I'll take it over from here oh good he talks all are Israel son a senior researcher at the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm described as e note herbalist merely a ciliated bag with epithelial epidermis and gastrodermis a sub-epidermal nervous plexus and a ventral mouth but without an anus or any distinct organs they mean that this is just a little purple bag of skin with a mouth thank you chill and cherry zenit herb Allah have no respiratory circulatory or excretory systems just a nerve plexus a central hub for a nervous system that may sound like a brain but it isn't if we were to identify the nerve plexus on a human being it would be in the spinal cord hey whoa did you just gloss over the fact that this thing eats and poops with the same hole well I was certainly trying to nice try what else only has one hole oh I know I know um jellyfish anemone Zin sea sponges also don't have anuses so they eat an x-ray through the same hole - hey I was hoping we wouldn't focus on this part I don't know the internet at all do you sadly I do scientists tried to define Zeno turbo but they had trouble at first at first they thought we were mollusks through DNA analysis but they figured out that that was just DNA from a past meal scientists care about classifying Zeno tur below we might actually hold important keys to the development of life on earth we may not have a or organs but we're still thriving researchers believe that we could give insight on how organs like kidneys or digestive tracts come to be how does evolution go from a bag with a mouth there's something more complex to an animal with a butt hole all right boys slow down for a second sorry my good lad are you okay you look positively pale no Cheree that's just how I do I'm just impressed you boys actually did your research I learned a few things you're welcome I mean I don't know why you make such a big deal of research and stuff it was easy I just used that website you showed me website wait do you mean the grid courses plus it's an on-demand subscription-based video learning service and let me tell you the key word here is demand for instance I demanded that they teach me about animals that one is pathetic is the mola mola annabeth a video about the intelligence of marine mammals there's hope after all Pope after all what year is it where am I not into marine life don't worry about it they got more than 11,000 video lectures and you're getting it all from people who know what the doin trusted professors and experts not some lunatic with five X's in the name and an underscore is he okay did did something happen Shh don't jinx it my mans looking good when he talks smart personally I've been using them to learn about animals that have more going for them than just being dumb and flat so I started do ology understanding the animal world with wise guy Donald II more the thud I just wrapped up the 20th lecture animal energetics and the giant panda problem did you know we got a giant panda problem because we do hey bro you got I don't know I'm just I'm just really surprised right now I was surprised too before the wood lecture just conjured up images of well yo but now I think about studying the mysteries of ancient mesoamerica from any of my devices what if you're interested in keeping that mine shut they've got a free trial to get you started with or you can sign up at the great courses plus comm slash broke bro what's up with you seriously I'm getting a little worried here yeah I I'm fine I think I don't know I you did a good job grill oh thanks I appreciate that I guess oh my god are we having a moment I don't know this has never happened quick talk about something else oh do you want to hear some really awful crabs they suck they're really bad you'll hate them yes please tell me about your crabs avidin Costello here decided they take the good ocean creatures so I guess I'm left with the crabs fine let's let's get into it the Japanese spider crab or in the original Japanese Takashi Gani or tall legs crab is Wackness and Carnot whack the Japanese spider crab is the largest species of crab on earth they're also the fuel for my nightmare bus they scuttle along the sea floor with their snippy Clippy needle arms off the coast of Japan usually around geothermal vents they get their name obviously from the fact that they look like spiders they have a small rounded body and eight legs that can grow to a span of almost 4 meters though females generally grow larger than males you think that this was the worst trait of these fascinating and horrible creatures but it's not they're omnivorous scavengers who roam the seafloor in search of algae small plants mollusks and carrion there are multiple myths that detail these crabs completely devouring human corpses that have sunk down to their habitats three quarters of all spider crabs ever caught are missing a leg but don't feel too bad there have been many documented instances where a single crab had lost three limbs and continued to live normally but it's also been seen that the spider crab has the ability to regrow limbs after they've lost them there giant crabs with the power of regeneration and a 100 year lifespan have been keeping them from usurping humans as the rightful leaders of this earth is the fact that they're just waiting for a moment to strike all of this pales in comparison to the spider crabs annual tradition however in the spring time thousands of spider crabs move to shallower waters to molt their old exoskeletons and grow new ones altogether in an event known as an aggregation these aggregations can be over a kilometer long and crabs can be stacked up to ten deep it's like a swimming pool full of claws and discarded bodies in this time which lasts a couple weeks or so the crabs are extremely vulnerable their soft bodies usually protected by the aforementioned exoskeleton are exposed to the world and this makes them an easy meal for stingrays and other predators it's a dogpile from hell it's a giant horror landfill except it's not stinky garbage it's just like thousands of crabs it's the time in which they are at their most dreadful and most vulnerable ah the world is full of beauty even if we can't see it at a first glance the ocean is a terrifying nightmare world where the laws of our earthbound existence do not apply but it is both the fear of the unknown and the search for the truth that drives us to find that beauty like the arid Badlands of North America concealed the fossilized remains of creatures long forgotten by this earth the ocean likewise appears vast and impenetrable but there is beauty there too doesn't mean I'm not terrified of it though
