we had the most points ever in a single season we are the best team in mls history excuse me but we're the only team to win the treble oh come on dude everyone knows the canadian trouble isn't the real trouble we're the best team ever hey losers i don't recall you guys winning cockacaff we on the other hand won the champions cup and we also beat vasco de gama and copa enter americana you guys see how many fans we get at our games sure everyone always forgets the nights shut up shut up i don't care about who's the best team in mls i only care about who's the worst team in mls history [Music] here are some cold hard facts not everyone is a winner and in this video today we need to shine some light on some teams that really didn't win now in the 26 year history of major league soccer i believe that i have found the five worst teams to ever take the field so i'm gonna analyze them and then i'm going to make a decision at the end on just who is the worst of the worst now disclaimer when i say worst i do mean worst relative to the era they played it because i happen to believe that the level of play on the field in this league has improved dramatically since the 90s and i do believe a wooden spoon recipient today would be better than most teams in the early days of mls so i'm approaching this as if everyone is on a level playing field the metro star's leading goal scorer for the previous three seasons had been giovanni savaresi yeah the same severisty as the current portland timbers head coach he was traded to the new england revolution before the start of the 99 season in hindsight maybe not the best move as they scored 22 fewer goals than in 1998. the 99 leading goal scorer for the metro stars was eduardo hurtado with just seven goals they also traded away alexi lalas and fan favorite tony miola before the start of the season which probably also didn't help but things were looking okay in the beginning with three wins in their first four matches but oh did it all fall apart in the summer with 15 points in 32 games the metro stars not only hold the distinction of worst points per game mark with 0.46 but they also have a record for most losses and a single season with 25 including a 12 game losing streak from july 4th to september 12th 32 goals scored 64 goals against meaning they scored exactly half as many goals as they let in negative 32 goal differential and they also lost their only us open cup game to lower division side staten island vipers and extra time i mean hey at least you lost to a team with a badass name that's gotta take away some of this thing right the low light if there is just one would probably be june 20th against kansas city the wizards were also really really bad in 1999 having combined a points per game mark of just 0.63 which is also in the bottom 10 points per game in league history but on this day the wizards would shut out the metro stars 6-0 for their worst loss in team history shout out chris henderson who tied the record for most assists in a game with four now the argument against the metro stars is the worst team is the fact that they still played in the era of the shootout 1999 was the last year of mls shootouts the metro stars appeared in seven of them with three wins not an amazing record but still somewhat respectable the way the point scoring worked in 1999 was a win was three points a shootout win was only one point and a loss whether it was in regulation or shootout was zero points if we were to eliminate shootouts and just count those games as draws the metro star's record adjusts to four wins 21 losses and seven draws good for 19 points and 0.59 points per game still absolute trash but not as stinky trash and not their worst points per game ratio anymore and what ultimately was the last season of existence for tampa bay the mutiny most definitely did not go out with a bane like the 99 metro stars things started off promising probably even more so for the mutiny they somehow managed preseason draws to celtic fc and millionaires of colombia which like i'd be impressed by today's standards and then they went on to win two of their first three games of the season then yeah that's a lot of losses following their second win of the season came a 10 game winless run including nine losses from the end of april to the middle of june after finally pulling out another win against dc united came another string of six straight losses seven straight if you count their us open cup loss to lower division side connecticut wolves superstar and arguably face of the league at the time carlos valderrama among others were traded 12 games into the season for a couple of other players and a draft pick that they obviously never used because they folded yeah great trade guys you really got the most out of that one mama down diallo what happened to him he banged in a monster 26 goals in 2000 and then only managed nine goals in 22 appearances in a one now i do think it's safe to say that you could attribute some of that drop off to losing valderrama but actually the biggest issue for the team was their backline that was leakier than a boat with a screen door without flexi hi phil swift here for flex deal 68 goals against in just 27 games do the math that's an average of two and a half goals a game this is a team that recorded just one single shot out the entire season and gave up four or more goals five times with 32 goals four that equates to a negative 36 goal differential and with a record of four wins 21 losses and two draws the tampa bay mutiny compiled the lowest point total of any team with just 14 points a paltry 0.52 points per game with the low light of the season well i probably could go with one of the many blowouts that they suffered but instead i'll go in a different direction and go with july 4th they hosted the metro stars in front of a season-high attendance of 20 730 people they had a 1-0 lead all the way up until the 85th minute not only would this be two wins in three games but also could possibly be their first shutout of the season probably wouldn't have completely turned around and saved their season but it could have given them enough momentum to at least knock them off this list but [Music] they choked goals in the 85th and 93rd minutes gave the metro stars the win and the mutiny yet another l now the argument against the 01 mutiny is the fact that their season was cut short due to the 9 11 attacks the 01 mls season had its last couple games canceled meaning the mutiny only played 27 of the planned 28 games so who knows what happens in that 28th game or in an alternate universe what if the mutiny played 34 games in the season like it is today well then that total of just 14 points in the regular season that might not be the case anymore i've said this before i feel like it's worth repeating i feel like people forget that chivas usa wasn't always horrific in fact they made the playoffs four straight seasons from year two to year five but year one was a completely different story hiring former mls coach of the year at mls cup winner thomas rongit as their first head coach seemed like a fantastic start but they only gave him 10 games in charge and after a 1 8 and 1 mark he got the axe normally a record like this it would be justifiable for a sacking but i'm gonna go ahead and defend rocket on this one because it is clear that this team was an absolute dumpster fire in this absolute golden athletic article about stories of the early days in mls there's one about chivas usa in 2005. apparently during a meeting with some of the other front office guys in which rongin was trying to explain how he wanted to build this team one of the front office members nephew was playing fifa 2004 in the corner of the room and he interrupted the meeting to get everyone to look at a player's stats in the game and then the owner and members of the front office actually took notes on a player's fifa ratings and then made their own list of guys they wanted a target from fifa ratings and then they actually signed some of them safe to say that strategy didn't work out so well their leading goal scorer was hector quadros with just four goals and that was the biggest issue of this team well besides the front office clearly being in over their heads the biggest issue of this team though is that they didn't have a real goal threat with just 31 goals that is less than a goal a game and with 67 goals against that's a goal differential of negative 36 equal to that of the 01 mutiny despite having three total coaches during the season none of them could figure out how to win with a roster that was clearly the weakest in the league four wins two of them against fellow expansion side real salt lake 22 losses six draws good for a 0.56 points per game mark but hey at least they did win their opening round of the us open cup 3-2 over lower division side charlotte eagles in extra time but then in the next round [Music] they lost to super classical rivals la galaxy and that in my opinion is the low light of the year because their whole season was a train wreck but they could have salvaged something had they made a deeper run in the u.s open cup and despite taking an early 1-0 lead and then a 2-1 lead the galaxy eventually reigned supreme and topped chivas 5-2 now the argument against the o5 chief usa is being the worst team in mls history is that despite this team being very very bad there have been teams with worse numbers like there's been teams to give up more goals teams to have fewer goals teams to have worse goal differential teams to have more losses teams to have fewer wins like chivas usa is near the bottom in all these categories but they're not at the bottom at any of them ben olson's third full year in charge spoiler alert he would not be fired after this season this team i cannot figure out they are a complete anomaly like okay there are good teams that have that one random bad year hey that's sports but the 2013 dc united took that one bad year to the absolute extreme and considering that in 2012 and 2014 dc united made the playoffs that just makes 2013 that much more puzzling in the preseason longtime ceo of the club kevin payne dipped for toronto and the team also sold up and coming stud andy nahar to anderlecht of the belgium league before the season started even still this was a team that most had predicted to still be playoff contenders nope after starting up the season by splitting their first two games dc then went on a 13-game winless run that stretched all the way into the middle of june in those 13 matches dc was shut out eight times after that was another stretch where they lost four or five games and then went winless the rest of the year finishing the season with a couple of mls records including fewest wins with three tied for the fewest road wins with zero and fewest goals scored per game with 0.65 yeah turns out scoring 22 goals in 34 games actually isn't a very good ratio who knew duane de rosario luis silva and kyle porter all of the team in scoring all with a whopping three goals three wins 24 loss seven draws good for 16 total points a 0.47 points per game this team scored just 22 goals in the regular season gave up 59 for a full differential it is just unfathomable to me that a team can score 58 points one year and then go to potentially the worst team in mls history the next team and i know kevin payne left and andy nahar left and leading goal scorer in 2012 chris pontius suffered some injuries and signing carlos for wheeze completely flopped with zero goals in 14 games i get that i do but it still shouldn't have been this bad the low light in my opinion has to be the last game of the regular season on national tv nbc dc united trying to avoid finishing with the worst record in mls history after kevin porter equalized the match in the 27th minute former mvp and my personal favorite player to ever play in mls dwayne di rosario had what looked like a golden moment to give dc the lead but couldn't corral the pass and tap the ball into the open even though i'm not a dc united supporter as a fan of dwight e rosario giles barnes then finds a winner dc loses and becomes the first team in mls history to win less than four games in a season now the argument against dc united being the worst team in mls history is that somehow someway this team actually managed to win the us open cup which means yes they had more wins in this tournament than they did in a whole 34 game season i just don't know if you can list a team that won a trophy as the worst team of all time like yeah they didn't win once on the road in 2013 but they did manage to win three of five games on the road in the open cup including the final at real salt lake which is usually a fortress for opposing teams if lewis neil doesn't score this goal then it's not a debate this is the worst team of all time but since he did who's to say this is my wild card because actually if you're looking at points per game basis the 2021 fc cincinnati actually had a worse mark than the 2019 squad however for this one i am looking at all the numbers as a whole the weird thing is is that this team actually started out okay two wins in its first four games including blanking the last season's mls cup runner-up portland timbers 3-0 in the home opener i even remember seeing them climb up to number 13 in the mls power rankings but yeah it turns out that may have been a little bit of an overreaction because then after that fc cincinnati fell back down to earth or actually they were more like thrown down to earth their attack dried up like camp green lake as they were shut out seven times in the next eight games oh and you probably figured this out already when earlier i said they gave up 75 goals but they also weren't too great at keeping the ball out of the net since he finished with a record of six wins 22 losses and six draws interestingly enough though they finished with identical home and away records with three wins 11 losses and three draws and in 2019 fc cincinnati holds the distinction of not only allowing the most goals in mls history with 75 but also having the worst goal differential in league history with a remarkable almost unrealistic mark of negative 44. the low point of the season can i just say the entire month of june like i'm pretty sure this is the worst month by any team in league history let me just go ahead and read out the scores 3-1 loss of colorado 5-2 loss to nycfc 2-0 home loss to the galaxy and to cap it off a 7-1 loss at minnesota now the argument against 2019 fc cincinnati is the worst team in mls history is that despite these horrible stats they did still manage to win more than everyone else on this list like yeah they got blown out a lot which led to inflated numbers with the goals against and goal differential but they still won six games plus everyone else on this list won four games united won three games so six games that's gotta count for something [Music] what's interesting about this is that you can genuinely make arguments for any of these teams to be the worst ever in mls like all of them have just been historically bad i gotta come up with an answer though so let's knock some of these teams out of the running the 99 metro stars well in 1999 mls had shootouts and those shootouts were so wonky there's a reason the league never went back to them so 99 metro stars congratulations you're not the worst team in mls history oh five chivas usa yeah you guys said some hilarious stories but you weren't exactly the worst at anything in 2019 fc cincinnati yeah you guys got blown out a lot but you did manage six wins so congrats guys you are not the worst teams in mls history okay so it's 0-1 tampa bay mutiny or 2013 dc united and really what it comes down to is how much do you value the us open cup because if you take that tournament out of the equation then the answer is easy it's 2013 dc united but i happen to value the us open cup it is a trophy and dc somehow managed to win it so for that reason that's the tiebreaker dc united you're out which means the 2001 tampa bay mutiny are the worst team in mls why are we clapping that's that's not something to celebrate yes they did play fewer games than everyone but even if they did play 28 games or 34 games or however many games i don't think that would have helped them actually i think that would have hurt them because i think they would have lost all those games which meant their points per game mark would have even been lower than what it was a little ironic isn't it first year of existence supporter shield last year of existence or steven mls history if you enjoyed the video please leave a like if you want more mls content please subscribe and also if you want to further support the channel i now have a patreon i
