the 15 wildest facts in MLS history the first ever player to sign on MLS that was Tab Ramos when he became a Metro star in January of 1995 a whole year before MLS officially kicked off but the first ever Prime Time soap opera star to sign an MLs well that was Andrew Shu when he signed with the LA Galaxy in 1996 Andrew Shu who played Billy Campbell on Fox's Melrose plays probably end up making out on the same little narrow squishy bed I've been kissing girls on since the eth grade what is your point maybe the funniest part about this all is that apparently he didn't even tell any of his coars that he was doing this like none of them knew that he was playing professional soccer on the side it would be a little unfair to call this a complete publicity stunt considering Shu did have professional soccer experience albeit 6 years prior to his mscent as the only white player in the Zimbabwe League believe it or not I couldn't find any footage of that go figure Shu finished his illustrious MLS career with five appearances and one assist balderama Donovan Keane javino via Vila Martinez all of these amazing players that have played in MLS but also all of these players I've only managed to win one MLS MVP award because amazingly enough only one player has managed to win the MLS MVP award twice in his career that being the great pry but which of his MVP years was better I'll let you decide was it the year he had 12 goals and 17 assists or the year he had 12 goals and 17 assists speaking of of MVPs did you know that that only two MVPs ever came from the M super draft those two MVPs being terlo tman who drafted second overall in 2002 and won the MVP in 2005 Magic Mike McGee here's just fourth of of G 2003 and won the MVP in 2013 mcke is also the last American player to win the MVP award the highest attended match in MLS history easy that was July 4th El traffico lafc LA Galaxy right nope not exactly because actually that's just the highest single game attendance technically if you account for double headers then it's the other La team Chas USA who hold the record for highest attended MLS Match when they had 92,50 accounted for in their match with the New England Revolution and we all know those 92,000 plus tickets were definitely there to watch Chas USA and not Barcelona versus guadalahara what and speaking of Chas USA yeah what a weird concept that was I mean having a feeder team for Liga MX that play and MLS like why do people think that was a good idea but believe it or not Chas USA were almost not the first team to do this because back in 2004 Club America were in advanced talks to purchase the San Jose Earthquakes now there's conflicting reports on what the name would have been as Tim liwicki of AEG the then owners of the earthquakes stated that there would be no name change while Club America vice president Alejandra dearo stated the team would become San Jose America and Sport the famous yellow kits as well the deal ultimately fell through thank God and San Jose would eventually relocate to Houston and then get a new team with all their history intact in 2008 oh my God oh my God you cannot be serious another team considered changing their name to a different different soccer team that exists outside of America at least it's not Liga MX this time but rather the eepl because in 2007 the Colorado Rapids formed a partnership with londons side Arsenal and at one point it was believed that the Rapids would be changing their name to Colorado Arsenal According to some posts on a Chris ker Colorado Rapids Message Board someone even discovered a link to an article dated for the future which at this point was the end of February of 2007 officially announcing the name change it seems as though the Rapids came to their senses and decided against this move and that link to that article suddenly mysteriously became dead yeah I know this is like the third wild fact in a row where I'm just talking about team names but you know sometimes the first idea just doesn't stick and you just got to go back to the drawing board this has actually happened multiple times in MLS with the Chicago Fire originally considering the name Chicago Rhythm the LA Galaxy considering the name the la groove and the New York New Jersey Metro star is considering the name the New York Empire maybe the most famous case of this is the Houston Dynamo they were originally unveiled as the Houston 1836 paying homage to the city's founding date and the logo featuring a silhouette of the Statue of Sam Houston but after immediate backlash from the Mexican Community about the name they quickly changed it to the Houston Dynamo I mean I get it but like let's be honest with ourselves this is kind of a kick-ass badge at least they kept the orange color okay let's talk about some God awful teams now the San Jose Earthquakes and DC United hold the record for most Wooden Spoons if we track it back to the inaugural 1996 season both with four spoons each but look out for Chicago and Toronto FC both right behind with three Spoons the only original 10 team not to get a wooden spoon that would be Sporting Kansas City BK these nuts inside your mouth but no one has been more miserable more pathetic as of late than my Chicago Fire okay let's just get this one over with the Chicago Fire currently have the longest active playoff drought at 6 years two more years of futility than they will be tied with Toronto for longest playoff drought in league history the fire also have the longest droughts ever for a conference semi-final appearance going on 14 years for a Conference Finals appearance also 14 years and for an MLS Cup appearance going on 20 years but wait there's more they have the longest drought for a cona CAF Champions Cup appearance going on 20 years the longest active drought for any competitive trophy win going on 17 years with their last win being the 2006 US Open cup if they do not win a trophy this year they will tie Dallas for the longest drought ever in that category so yeah in short it really [ __ ] sucks to be a fire fan now but yeah if you break it down into trophies one per season somehow someway Chicago is not last on that list that dubus honor goes to the Colorado Rapids with one MLS Cup zero US Open cup zero supporter Shields and zero conquer cap titles in 28 full seasons the Colorado Rapids are currently averaging 04 trophies of season their Rocky Mountain Rivals RSL are next worst with a 05 Mark with just one MLS Cup in 19 Seasons the best Mark it's not Seattle it's not lafc it's actually Toronto FC with a mark of 59 trophies a season one MLS cup one supporter Shield zero cona c cap championships and eight Canadian championships in 17 Seasons I think playing in the Canadian championship might have something to do with this but maybe I'm wrong and speaking of Canadian teams the Vancouver White Caps actually have winning records over both Toronto and Montreal in the MLS regular season but I've managed to capture the fewest Canadian championships of the three MLS teams with only three titles Toronto FC meanwhile have losing records versus both Vancouver and Montreal but yet have the most Canadian championships with eight the most watched MLS YouTube video it's not Zlatan it's not Messi it's not even Jeff lenowitz it's Mario batelli and his failed Trickshot and subsequent benching in Manchester City's friendly against the LA Galaxy back into 2011 yeah that was pretty bad but hey at least he's not like you know throwing darts at kids or anything oh wait so Chris walowski may have eclipsed Landon Donovan's regular season goal scoring record but one record that no one will ever be able to take away from Donovan is his playoff goal scoring record Donovan stands alone at the top of the playoff goal scoring mountain with 25 of them in the MLS Cup playoffs five of those being an MLS Cup itself which is also a record of course playing in seven MLS Cup finals will help but even still the next closest on the list of playoff goals is Carlos Ruiz with 16 nine goals behind Landon [Music] Donovan let's talk TV ratings the inaugural MLS Cup between the LA Galaxy and DC United still holds the record for highest TV audience with 3.1 million tuning in MLS Cup 2010 between FC Dallas and the Colorado Rapids meanwhile has the lowest TV audience with just 748 th000 viewers across all channels how about MLS Cup 2023 well they drew an $815,000 on Fox which doesn't sound great but remember that it's not accounting for for everyone that watched it on MLS season pass on Apple TV and while Apple TV did not reveal their numbers as they never do per policy for some reason given the amount of subscribers and numbers that were being claimed during the regular season it could pretty safely be assumed that MLS Cup 2023 brought in anywhere from 1.25 to 1.75 million viewers Al together and the final most important important most wildest fact in MLS history is that two time MLS best 11 Defender Bobby Boswell is on an episode of Nickelodeon guts Bobby lightning Boswell unfortunately he only got second on his episode losing to Robin but at least he did win the soccer Challenge and he did win the aggro crra which if we're being honest that's the only one that really people only care about right if you can get past the 240p grainy image there's actually a great video on YouTube all about it I'll leave a link in the description oh and while we're talking about Bobby Boswell he was also one of cosmopolitan's 50 candidates for Bachelor of the year in 2006 Bobby Boswell what a legend hunch over there don't twerk
