Major League Soccer has seen a lot of big names come through over the years but World Cup winners only 12 of them have ever suited up for an MLS team so let's go through them all and find out who flourished and who flopped first up Claudio Ibrahim vas Leal or more commonly known as Bronco left back for Brazil 1994 played for the New York New Jersey Metro stars in 1997. the guy that replaced the guy that broke tab Ramos's face Bronco made three appearances in the 94 World Cup being the quarters semis and finals and managed to score against the Netherlands with a rocket of a free kick pretty good pretty good showing surely a player of this skill would dominate MLS right not so much I mean for one thing other than this trading card I could not find a single picture or clip of him online while playing for the Metro Stars and I looked everywhere so I'm sorry the best I can do for these next 20 or so seconds is this clip of O.J Simpson's Ford Bronco Chase for Bronco the soccer player just 11 appearances and more red cards than goals sure you can't expect your left back to be leading your team in scoring I get that but we should at least expect them not to be sent off for spitting on an opponent which Bronco did in his final game in MLS against Columbus Defender Mike lapper Metro Stores ditched him after the season lotar Matthias midfielder for Germany 1990 played for the Metro Stars in 2000. a legend in German soccer captaining the World Cup winning German side in 1990 Mattea started all seven matches in the world cup and scored four goals that helped him win the Ballon d'Or that year and also the silver ball at the World Cup that's the award given to the second best player at the World Cup it's also worth mentioning that matteus has played in five total World Cups which is tied for the most of any player so surely a player of this pedigree would dominate MLS right no no I wonder how many times I can use that Will Smith clip before people start clicking off the video matteus was fine when he arrived in New York and he told locals that he was a German basketball player that signed with the Knicks yeah he may have been joking but that should have been the first red flag 16 total appearances for the Metro Stars no goals but one trip to Saint Tropez to go Sun Tanning and he was supposed to be rehabbing yeah he didn't give a [ __ ] he treated MLS like a joke let's just say this if this signing was made today it would not help The Stereotype that MLS is a retirement League I swear it's not though okay Mateus retired at the end of the season Yuri jokayev attacking midfielder for France in 1998 played for the Metro Stars slash New York Red Bulls from 2005 to 2006. wow okay I guess everyone that wins the World Cup is playing for the Metro Stars Then a pivotal piece for France in 1998 Jackie F appeared in all seven matches starting at six tallying one goal from a PK and three assists including one of them two Zinedine Zidane in the final unlike the last two guys drakayev actually looked like he wanted to be here in fact he reportedly turned down higher offers just to play in New York and he was good damn good well for the first year anyways after recovering from a hamstring injury which sidelined him for the first couple weeks of the Season Yuri bagged 10 goals and seven assists in 2005 and was voted Team MVP the next year which happened to be the year the Metro Stars rebranded to Red Bull wasn't as successful sure he scored the first goal for Red Bull New York history but in 21 games he scored just two goals and added four assists oh yeah he also told the team he had to attend to an unexpected serious Family Matter in France and then was spotted in the crowd of the 2006 World Cup quarterfinal against Brazil now even if it is true about the Family Matter still [Music] not the best look drakaya retired after the 06 season the Nielsen forward for Brazil 2002 played for FC Dallas in 2007. okay so he wasn't Ronaldo or ravaldo but he still made five appearances in the O2 World Cup including the final against Germany considering he was FC Dallas's first ever designated player a lot of people were excited about this move Danielson was a dribbling Maestro so surely we were going to be seeing him carve up some MLS backlines right no no no no he didn't do that because after scoring a PK in his first start Danielson did precisely nothing after that eight games just that one goal and zero assists this is the definition of a bust Danielson wasn't even in the squad for the US Open Cup Final against New England at the end of the season the club tried to negotiate a smaller contract but the Nielsen opted to play in Brazil instead Thierry Henry Striker for France in 1998 played for the New York Red Bulls from the second half of 2010 to 2014. the second member of the 98 France World Cup team in many ways 1998 was Thierry Henry's coming out party despite not being the biggest name in French soccer yet he led his Squad at scoring at the world cup with three goals all of them in the group stage doing this at just 21 years old of course his legendary status goes well beyond the 1988 World Cup I could list all of his accolades at Arsenal but this video would end up being an hour long and I don't want to do that now this was it behind David Beckham this was probably the biggest International signing in MLS at the time boy did he deliver four straight seasons of 10 or more goals three MLS best 11 selections a supporter shield in 2013 and he did all this in the Twilight of his career yeah that incident with Kevin Hartman was ridiculous even if it was completely unintentional was he demanding yes did he get the most out of his teammates absolutely Tyrion Reed was fantastic for New York the only thing he couldn't do was wind that elusive MLS Cup but hey I'm not marking him down for that one no one has been able to do that for this curse Club Henry retired after 2014. Alessandro Nesta Center back for Italy 2006 and played for Montreal Impact from 2012 to 2013. a pivotal piece of the Italian backline in the first half of the tournament starting in all three group stage games including against the US in game two unfortunately for Nesta he suffered a groin injury in the last group stage game against the Czech Republic and was knocked out for the rest of the tournament like many on this list tenesta came into MLS at the tail end of his career signing in a free transfer and not a designated player deal in today's MLS getting a World Cup champ but not as a designated player is a steal something that'll make a little bit more sense later on in this video 31 appearances from Montreal however he announced that 2013 would be his last season as a professional and left the club after that Nesta wanted to hop right into coaching afterward and even interviewed for the open Montreal job but it went to Frank clopass instead oh and it should be stated that he did have a brief stint with indian-sized shanayan FC in 2014 so yeah retirement League status be damned claverson midfielder for Brazil 2002 played for the Philadelphia Union in 2013. five appearances including three starts at the O2 World Cup perhaps claverson's biggest claim to fame was setting up Ronaldo with the second goal in the final with the help of a cheeky dummy by Rivaldo surely more magic come to MLS though right arriving to Philadelphia on loan clyberson did manage to score a game winner at the depth against Toronto but other than that not much can be said of his time on the field 11 appearances just that one goal no red Curts for spitting on anyone however his MLS story didn't end after his brief playing stint because after retiring a few years later claverson actually returned to Philadelphia in 2017 to become an academy coach yeah you know the really really good Academy that just keeps churning out new players almost as fast as the crew keep rebranding and just this past season he joined the coaching staff for Union two but left halfway through the season to join the coaching staff for nycfc Kaka attacking midfielder for Brazil 2002 played for Orlando City from 2015 to 2017. okay yeah Kaka is an absolute legend of the game one of the best to ever do it but he wasn't quite the legend in 2002 yet when he was just 20 years old just one appearance in the O2 World Cup 25 minutes against Costa Rica when the score was already 5-2 when Orlando came into MLS I don't know if it was possible to make a bigger Splash than signing caca that was huge because while MLS had been signing big names for a while they've all pretty much been from Europe cacao was easily the biggest South American name to ever come into MLS no offense to Bronco or claverson and caca was pretty good but his team Orlando city was pretty bad despite cacao putting up solid numbers Orlando never made the playoffs in his tenure but he did manage to win MLS All-Star game MVP which let's be honest that's a little more important than some silly old Ballon d'Or he won in 2007. Kaka retired after 2017 but he still plays some beer league soccer from time to time Andrea pierlo midfielder for Italy 2006 played for a New York City FC from 2015 to 2017. not only did pierlo win the bronze ball that's the award for being the third best player in the world cup but he did so by racking up the most assists at the 06 World Cup of any player and he also had the most man of the match Awards with three including the final on the day of the final Pirlo told reporters that he spent all day sleeping and playing PlayStation and then went out and won a World Cup at night what a [ __ ] boss arriving in New York in July of 2015 Fearless time in MLS had its ups and downs on the one hand five assists in 13 games in his first season which that's not bad on the other hand fans criticized his efforts or lack of on the defensive end during his entire nycfc tenure and that's kind of the story of purlo's time in MLS yes he showed flashes of Brilliance but ultimately everyone could tell that he was just sort of over it a team-high 11 assists in 2016 led to a injury Riddle season in 2017. pierlo announced on Twitter following That season that he was officially retired from soccer David via Striker for Spain in 2010 played for nycfc from 2015 to 2018. yeah sometimes I forgot just how much cash nycfc spent in their early days I guess when you don't build a stadium and you play on a baseball field he got some extra bucks to spend hey I'm allowed to make this joke for another four years guys after a surprising defeat for Spain in the opening game against Switzerland David via then went on God mode to score five goals in the next four games he was Unstoppable Spain would eventually go on to win the world cup over the Netherlands and Vio was presented the bronze ball for third best player in the world cup as the first ever player to sign for nycfc Via absolutely delivered 77 goals 26 assists across Four Seasons two times MLS best 11 and he was even named the 2016 MLS MVP Sasha clashman totally got robbed but that's besides the point perhaps the only thing missing from his time in MLS was post-season success nycfc made a habit of choking in the playoffs in their first couple of seasons and even David via's magic wasn't enough to bring City to the promised land after 2018 via played two more years in Japan and then retired Bastion Schweinsteiger midfielder for Germany 2014 and then played for my Chicago Fire from 2017 to 2019. after setting up the first match of the world cup with an ankle injury schwannee eventually recovered and earned a spot back into the starting lineup Schweinsteiger was the rock for Germany in the middle and he was Paramount to Germany's success his bloody ass face he received in the final is one of the iconic images of the entire world cup even more epic than that was the fact that he didn't immediately pack his bags and leave after he was asked if he could win Chicago the World Cup let me rephrase do you expect now that you're here Bastian that uh World Cup uh goal for Chicago Fire is a realistic expectation what you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard Schweinsteiger and Dax McCarty form the best Midfield in all of mls in 2017. after years of failure the fire finally returned to the playoffs in 2017 and Schweinsteiger was a huge reason why the future finally looked bright for the fire and then they went back to sucking head coach Valco panovich felt he was out of options in the back and then moved Schweinsteiger to Centerville yeah World Cup winning midfielder let's play my defense ultimately it didn't pan out as the fire missed the playoffs in 2018 and 2019. okay so yeah if you look at the whole picture he only made the playoffs once and they got immediately destroyed by the Red Bulls but the reality is is that the fire probably don't make the dance in 2017 and probably get the wooden spoon in 2018 and 2019 without Schweinsteiger seriously the fire sucked and he did everything he could Schweinsteiger retired at the end of the 2019 season and finally the last World Cup winner to play in MLS Blaze matuidi midfielder for France 2018 and played for inner Miami from 2020 to 2021. a versatile piece for France in 2018 he started in five matches including the World Cup final against Croatia of course not the biggest name to come into MLS but given his club and Country resume most recently playing for Juventus in Syria the fact that inner Miami was able to sign him on a tam contract was remarkable Not only was this a fantastic signing for Miami but for all of MLS it sent the message that the league was becoming more attractive to International stars that it wasn't just about getting money from a DP contract hell yeah MLS is here baby it's not just a retirement League it's not just a league for kids to get their start and then springboard to the bigger leagues across the ocean MLS is now big time right no no only one problem enter Miami [ __ ] lied turns out he was getting DP money they just weren't reporting it so Miami effectively played with four DPS in 2020. in case you didn't realize this that's cheating pretty embarrassing at least MLS laid down the law they find Miami two million dollars plus Miami lost another two million dollars plus in allocations and other individuals within the organization are also fined and suspended other than that plays between these time and MLS was pretty unremarkable two goals and two assists across 47 regular season appearances he did have one more year left on his contract but Miami opted not to bring him back and my Tweety hasn't signed for anyone else since [Music] the RV next me personally I think it's going to be messy next ah crap did I just reveal what I think it's gonna win the World Cup
