Who Could See Thestrals by the End of the Series? (How Many People Witnessed Death?)

thust rils are one of the most interesting characters in the Harry Potter series they are skeletal wied horses that can only be seen by those who have witnessed death there were a few characters who really did see these creatures during the course of the seven books but I got to thinking how many characters could see these beasts after the series ended I started to research for this video and it took me way farther than I thought it would I put together a list of well over 100 characters who witnessed death at some point and in this video I'm going to go through each character explain who they saw die and see just how many people can see thestrals now for the death to count according to official Harry Potter Cannon it must be an intelligent being normally ones who were able to speak so witnessing beings like goblins house elves and Centaur die would count but seeing cre features like Phoenix's bass lisks and other being similar to them would not count if you enjoy this video hit said that let's get the video started we're going to start with hog Legacy which is the only Harry Potter video game that is actually Cann to the books therefore it's the only game I'm including in this video other games like Hogwarts mystery and Magic awakened do not count in the opening few minutes of Hogwarts Legacy you see George oric get eaten by a dragon which then allows you to see the thestrals pulling the carriage you're in so the Avatar of the game meaning you the carriage driver and a leer fig are all able to see the winged horses in a flashback of the game we see isidora be killed by San bakar meaning that himself peral rackam and Charles Rookwood three of the four Keepers witness the death and can now see thestrals the fourth keeper Fitzgerald was knocked out when this happened so she did not witness the death we also have Nat oai who witnessed her father's death when he sacrificed himself to save her on top of that we have Sebastian Salo who saw his parents die from a toxic poison his sister and Salo might have been there as well but that's not confirmed however ever she did witness a goblin die right in front of her later in the game when Sebastian used the imperious curse on him forcing the goblin to stab himself toward the finale of the game ran Rock killed his brother Lodo meaning he himself witnessed to death in canaly thestrals and Victor Rookwood was also present for this meaning he was also granted the ability to see the winged horses so right off the bat we have 11 characters who witnessed death so far now moving to everything that happened before the seven books we have the Bloody Baron who is an interesting case because he's obviously a ghost before he was a ghost though moments before he died he witnessed Helen a ravenclaw's death who he actually stabbed and killed now a question arises here can ghosts see thestrals personally I'm going to say yes and this also brings up another question I wanted to ask you guys does a ghost's own death count as witnessing a death so basically do they witness themselves die if that's the case that would would mean that every single ghost could see thestrals let me know in the comments below Ariana died right in front of them next we have Mrs Cole the matron of the orphanage who obviously is a muggle I did even more research on this and I came to the conclusion that Muggles can see thestrals I say this because in the book fantastic beast and where to find them which was published back in 2001 it says that all winged horses thestrals included must have a disillusionment charm upon it to make sure that that Muggles do not see them so yes Muggles can see thestrals if they witness death but getting back to Mrs Cole she witnessed marip gon Voldemort's mother died right in front of her after she gave birth to Voldemort himself and speaking of Voldemort he witnessed death when he killed his muggle father and his grandparents this incident also means that two of The Riddles would be able to see thestral after watching Voldemort kill whoever was first this was very brief though because they died seconds later but they still had the ability to see thestrals so I'm going to count it another one of Voldemort's murders led to someone else being able to see thestrals as hokei the house self watched the dark lord kill her master hepsa smith however this one is tricky because Voldemort had actually modified the house elf's memory making her forget that he did it and instead making hokei think that she accidentally poisoned her master either way though no matter which memory she remembers she had the memory of hepsa Smith dying in front of her meaning that hokei had the ability to see thestrals next we have rubius Hagrid who witnessed death sometime before the series started as he took care of the Hogwarts herd of thestrals during his time as gamekeeper long before the first book I would guess based on context clues from the novels that he was with his father when he died which would have taken place the summer before his second year or the summer before his third year the year he was expelled which granted him the ability to see the winged horses Alister mad Moody was another person who witnessed death before the series as he killed Evan Rosier and watched him die in front of him Rosier is dead a piece of me with him me however it's possible that before he killed Rosier he witnessed Fabian and Gideon pruit die as he told Harry that Molly Weasley's Brothers fought like Heroes to the end the person that killed the puit brothers was Anon and doof meaning that he witnessed their deaths and therefore was able to see thestral as well after that we have creature the house elf who watched his master regulus black get killed in the cave where Voldemort's locket horcrux was meaning the creature could see thestrals following that two of the for Marauders Peter pedig and Sirius Black were part of an incident where Peter set off a blasting curse killing 12 Muggles in front of both of them which means from that point on they both had the ability to see thestrals in the fifth book in the series the book in which thestrals are introduced both Neville Longbottom and Luna loveg good are able to see the beasts we find out that Neville could see them because he witnessed his grandfather die right in front of him meanwhile Luna witnessed her mother Pandora love good die when Pandora was experimenting with spells something went wrong and Luna watched her mother die thus granting Luna the ability to see thestrals we also find out in the care of magical creatures class in which thestrals were properly introduced to us that a student named Theodore not could also see the creatures so that now adds 22 more characters who can see thestrals meaning we have have a total of 33 people who witness death and we're not even to the main series yet moving to the Fantastic Beast movies we have Credence barbone AKA aelia Dumbledore murdering a few people including Henry Shaw Jr which both Henry Shaw senior and langen Shaw witnessed meaning these two Muggles have the ability to see thestrals also Credence witnessed this death so he too can see the winged horses in the crimes of grindle vaal nini witnessed Irma the half house self get murdered meaning she has the ability to see thestrals we also have the ant who watch corvis L strange drown in the Shipwreck then we have the Night in Paris at gindel va's rally there two different people died the redheaded girl killed by or cassus Bell and leadless strange killed by Gall grindal the people who witnessed these deaths include n's Commander Theus Commander Tina Goldstein Queenie Goldstein Jacob Kowalski leita who had a clear view of the red headed girl before she died and many orders but we only know cassia's Bell and Chang's names so they're the only two that we're going to count also yes Chang as in Cho Chang's grandfather a fun little Easter egg I wanted to point out for you guys then we have the members of grindle va's acolytes who were also present which includes vinda Rosier Caro crawl abery Nagel and craft so adding fantastic Beast characters to the list of people who can see thestrals we have 19 more people which brings our total to 52 characters moving to the events of the actual series now B Crouch Jr witnessed his father bardy crutch senior's death when he killed him in the Forbidden Forest on the Hogwarts grounds which also means he might have stumbled upon aestral right after because that's where many of them reside in the Forbidden Forest wouldn't that be cool following that we have Harry Potter himself who witnessed Cedric diery die right in front of him when Peter pedigree used the killing curse on him also so I know people in the comments are going to question why Harry couldn't see thestrals before Cedric's death so I'm going to address it many say that Harry saw his mom die but witnessing his mother's death didn't count because he was just a baby meaning he was too young to process the death and you have to be able to process it to be able to see thestrals also the reason he didn't see thestrals at the end of his fourth year when he was riding the carriages to go home even though he had already seen Cedric die this is because the death of Cedric had not yet sunk in so it didn't count those are JK Rowling's explanations I'm just the messenger but let me know in the comments below what you think also one thing that I've seen many people point out is that Harry saw quirrel die in his first year which is true in the movie but in the book Harry passed out before he died meaning he missed quirl burning to death so that one is actually explained in the books the next person to witness death was olymp Maxim she and Hagrid while on their mission to recruit Giants watched carcass battle to the death against goath and she and Hagrid watched as go maath killed carcass by beheading him Maxim witnessed death in that moment meaning she could now see thestrals just like Hagrid during the events of the fifth book brri bod was a casualty of War as he was killed by venomous tentacula sent to him by Death Eaters while in the memory ward of St Mongo's hospital this would have been witnessed by gilderoy Lockard another patient in the ward along with Miriam stoud the matron for that wing of the hospital meaning they could now both see thestrals Neville's parents Frank and Alice long bottom were also there for this and I put a lot of thought into this one and I came to the conclusion that their minds were so far gone from being tortured into madness that I don't think they would have been able to process the death much like baby Harry meaning they wouldn't be able to see thestrals so that now adds five more characters to the list of people who can see thestrals bringing our total to 57 people following that we have a death that many people witnessed and that is of course the death of serious black during the battle of the Department of Mystery on the order side Remis Lupin and Kingsley shacklebolt both saw this death meaning they were granted the ability to see the winged horses on the Death Eater side Bellatrix lrange Lucius Maloy Augustus Rookwood Mr Goyle Gregory goyle's father Mr Krab Vincent Krab's father rodolphus lrange mulber Json Avery not and Walden McNair all also witnessed sirius's death Honestly though I'm sure that almost every single one of those Death Eaters had already already seen death but this is the first time we have proof of it with sirius's death that adds 13 more characters to the list bringing our total to 70 people who can see thestrals after that we have another death that adds a lot to this list this time during the battle of the astronomy Tower Dumbledore's death was witnessed by sever a Snape who killed him Draco Maloy electo cararo Amicus Caro thwen ra Corin yaxley fenri greyback and Gibbon once again I'm sure that almost all of those villains besides Draco Malfoy had already seen death before this and yes that includes Snape I think I'm pretty sure he killed before this because Dumbledore said he didn't want draco's soul to be split by murdering him implying that Snape doing so wouldn't matter because his soul was already split from a previous murder and going to greyback seeing Alba Dumbledore's death he almost witnessed another death earlier in the halfblood prince book when he killed the Montgomery boy but the Montgomery boy didn't die on the scene he died at St Mongo's Hospital hours later meaning the greyback did not witness his death but anyway with Dumbledore's death we add seven more characters to the list meaning we now have a total of 77 characters who can see thestrals after that we have another death that took place during the battle of the astronomy tower that being the death of the Death Eater Gibbon he was hit by friendly fire when the killing curse shot by thorf and raal hit him manura MGO and nador Aon definitely saw this because they were right next to him when it happened so that granted them the ability to see thestral also if you're wondering why Tonks didn't see Sirius die during the battle of the Department of mysteries it's because she was knocked unconscious before that happened some other people that might have witnessed Gibbon's death are jinny Weasley Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger however it's not definite that these three characters saw it but each one saw a death later on in the series Ron saw wormtail die right in front of him when Peter pedig choked himself to death with a silver hand as for Hermione she saw Dobby die right in front of her on the beach in Shell Cottage and as for Jenny she might have seen Fred die though it's unlikely given the explosion that caused it which would have made it really hard to actually witness him die later on though she saw her mother kill Bellatrix L strange so at some point in the series all three of them saw a death at some point or another now adding those characters to the list we have five more people meaning we have a total of 82 people who can see thestrals in the opening chapter of the Deathly Hallows Voldemort killed the Muggle Professor charity Burbage in front of his Death Eaters but most that were there have already been accounted for in this video the only person there that hasn't been listed as seeing a death yet is Narcissa Malfoy in the movie Pious thick Nest was also there to witness this but he wasn't there in the book and for this video we're going by book cannon not film Cannon during the Battle of seven Potters Bill and Flur as well as Hermione and Kingsley flew on thestrals based on whether or not her miny saw gibbons's death she may or may not have been able to see the thestral she was riding which is interesting to think about because the book never makes note of this As for Bill and flury an thestrals we're actually not entirely sure who Flur saw die that allowed her to see the creatures As for Bill he might have seen Gibbon die during the battle of the astronomy Tower but other than that there's not another death mentioned in the series that he could have seen so if he didn't see Gibbon die that's a mystery that JK Rowling never explained after that we have Dean Thomas who most likely witnessed Ted Ton's dirt crestwell and the Goblin Goro be killed as he was traveling with them when they were caught and murdered if he didn't see them die though he would have seen Voldemort die in the final battle we also have the goblin grip hook who was also traveling with Ted Durk and gorach when they were murdered meaning he most likely saw them die as well again though if that's not the case he would have seen many people die during Voldemort's Rage which used to be just a movie thing but rolling has now made it cannon that grip Hook was there for that in the novel as well so grip hook would have had the ability to see thestrals for a few few seconds before he was ultimately killed but I'm still going to count it after that Gregory Goyle witnessed Vincent crab fall to his death in the burning room of requirement and before those of you who have only seen the films run to the comment saying that Goya was the one who died please listen to this because I don't want people in the comments saying that I'm wrong which always seems to happen even when I give a very clear explanation this scene was changed in the movie as blaz saini took goyle's place in watching his friend die Goyle took crab's place of dying and crab was cut out of the scene because of legal issues the actor had so just to get it straight this video is based on the novel not the film and in the novel Blaze was not there so he could not see thestrals and Goyle saw crab die which granted Goyle the ability to see the beasts after that we have Percy Weasley who like Jenny might have seen Fred die though again I find it unlikely with the explosion but it's more likely for Percy because he was right next to Fred before it happened if he didn't see Fred die though he definitely saw Voldemort die at the end of the final book we also have lavender Brown dying in courtesy of fenri greyback and Cil trani most likely saw this death happened as she was the one who chased greyback off in the novel if she didn't see it though she for sure saw Voldemort die in the end after that we have Molly Weasley who of course saw Bellatrix die when she killed her toward the end of the battle of Hogwarts with that we add 10 more characters who witness death meaning we now have a total of 92 people who can see thestrals then during the final battle in the Great Hall a whole list of people witnessed either Bellatrix or Voldemort die because unlike in the movie where no one saw Voldemort's fight with Harry the novel had every character who survived there to watch this final showdown the people that were there who had not yet witness death up until this point include George Weasley Charlie Weasley Arthur Weasley Sheamus finnean Lee Jordan Cho champ Angelina Johnson Katie Bell Oliver wood Alicia spinit fillius Flitwick Horus slug horn Pomona Sprout Poppy Pomfrey PVA Patel Padma Patel cormack mlagan Ramil Dain Michael Corner Anthony Goldstein Hannah Abbot Ernie McMillan winky the house elf sylvenus kettleburn austa long bottom and finally the death theater Travers this adds 27 more characters to witness death meaning we now have a total of 119 people who can see thestrals then moving to the sequel of the Harry Potter series The Cursed child which I debated putting in this video because it's so disliked and so discredited by most Harry Potter fans but JK did say it was Canon unfortunately so I'm going to put it in in the play Harry son Alis seus Potter and draco's Son scorpus Maloy witnessed Voldemort and bellatrix's daughter delini I know just from that sentence alone it shows how God awful this play is but the two boys St delini murder a Hogwart student named Craig this adds three more people to the list meaning that 122 characters can see thestrals in the series man that was a lot I did not expect this high of a number when I came up with this video idea but once I actually sat down and thought about it I realized how extensive the research for this video would be hopefully you guys enjoyed it though I
