can't find my files where's my files they'll tell you where your files are so a lot of people ask me where does DaVinci Resolve store my files I can't find them I don't know where to look for them how do I tell it where I want to store my files and I get that question pretty often so we're gonna jump over into DaVinci Resolve here and I'm gonna show you exactly where you can find all your files [Music] all right so as I mentioned a lot of people always looking for their files in DaVinci Resolve I can't find my files where's my files so we're gonna jump over in DaVinci Resolve and I'm gonna show you exactly where DaVinci Resolve stores all your files all right here we are in DaVinci Resolve and there's a bunch of different locations where resolve saves various files so I'm gonna go through the different file types here and where they're saved and how you can change where the Vinci resolve saves them so the first one is gonna be right here it's gonna be in your project library so the first files we want to talk about is your database so you want to keep your database on your local hard drive this is gonna allow DaVinci Resolve to access the files as quick as it can and your project files are really a file that tells resolve where to find everything else in your project so you want resolve to be able to access that pretty quickly so originally I had started with it on an external hard drive and after talking with Blackmagic Design they said make sure you keep it on an internal hard drive that's gonna give you the best performance in resolve so make sure your database is on your internal hard drive and if you have a database in there but you're not sure where it is if you right-click on it you can do reveal and find her and it's gonna show you exactly where it is and if you're just creating a new database it'll ask you the location of where you want to save your database all right so the next files that we're going to talk about is all of your media files that you need to create your project that includes all your footage all of your graphics and if your audio or anything that you're gonna need to create your video project so I keep all that on an external hard drive so I use a Samsung t5 SSD it's a super fast hard drive and it works out great and this way I don't fill up my internal hard drive with all of my project files one thing to note if you want the fastest access to your files then you want to go ahead and put that on your internal hard drive but then when you're done with the project maybe move it off to somewhere else so now that we have our project media files in a location of our choice we've got our database set up let's get in to resolve and we're gonna talk about some other files so if we come down to the little gear icon here called project settings and click on that we're gonna come up to this item here master settings and we're gonna scroll down and look under working folders and that's going to be the location where any of your cache files are stored and that means pre-rendering and a viewer fusion clips or any where it might render a file for you the cache file is gonna be located in this directory here which is wherever you choose the cache files location is also where your optimized media will be stored a lot of people want to know where is my optimized media well that's where it is and I don't know that you can go and grab it and use it for anything else and if you ever lose the file locations or they get moved or something happens you can always just tell resolve to find it and it should be able to relink those clips for you so you can click on browse go find wherever you want say I'll just pick DaVinci Resolve working files is just a folder that I made up and I'm just going to say in capture right below that we have gallery stills location so that's going to be the location where any of the stills that you might save throughout your project in the color tab where it's going to store those and again just click on browse go find wherever you want to put them and that'll be where they're stored the next setting that you can change if you come down to capture and playback and scroll down to capture I don't know if you're gonna use the capture settings or not but if you were and you want it to save clips right down here under capture it says save clips to click browse and you can select the location where DaVinci Resolve would save any clips that you may capture now that we've looked at those couple locations let's cancel that and we're gonna come up to DaVinci Resolve at the top and come down to preferences so if you come to the system menu here over to media storage and then in this area here you have the ability to add in a file location if you look down here it says the first media storage location in the above list will be used to store gallery stills and cache files this location should be permanently connected to your system so you can add that in there if you want next we're going to come over to the users section come down to projects save and load and if you come down here under save settings project backup location so resolve has the ability to perform backups in my case every five minutes here you can change that to whatever you want and you have the ability to specify where you want those project backups to get saved so again just click on browse go ahead and select where you want your backups saved I created a backup directory on my external hard drive so that's where I have DaVinci Resolve backup all my projects and you want to make sure that you have project backups checked on here so that way the Vinci resolve will save your backups and I'd like every five minutes because if I forget to save it and oops it crashes or something happens then you've always got a backup of your project alright guys there you go that's where all your files are stored in DaVinci Resolve and how you can set where you want them stored so if you got any other questions feel free to leave a comment down below if this video was helpful give it a thumbs up and if you're into DaVinci Resolve photography Photoshop and Lightroom consider subscribing to my channel thanks for watching and I will see you guys in the next video peace did I say cash right that time so I know it's on my other videos I said cash eh oops Hey am I gonna do right what people were quick to point me out on that woops I can't find my files where my files [Music]
