What's Wrong With International Dubs of Despicable Me?

it's been 14 years since illumination started taking over the world with minions as of writing this script the fourth despicable m movie is hitting theaters and while the quality of the films might be getting worse I still think the first one was pretty decent that's why I recently decided to watch it in many different languages Spanish French Turkish Chinese Russian polish Ukrainian German and even Armenian believe me these versions were packed with unexpected changes compared to the original so without further Ado let's dive in the Polish version added swearing in one scene it's dead and famous polish word you're seeing on the screen right now sure they didn't say it entirely but it's close enough that anyone who's heard it will know exactly what they meant in the American version Gru has a pretty specific accent it makes us German Spanish and Russian I mostly hear the Russian influence your dog has been leaving little Bombs all over my yard and I don't appreciate it and that's where the things get interesting see the name grw is basically an abbreviation of the Russian Federal agency guu or Gru so it seems like the original grw is meant to evoke this image of a Russian spy or mobster interestingly in the Russian version of the movie grw doesn't have any accent at all but other versions get creative here in the Ukrainian up they turn Gru into a Frenchman for some reason he constantly uses French words and speaks with a heavy [Music] accent it's pretty bizarre and I'm not sure why they did it like this and in the French dub Gru has a thick caricatured Russian accent the movie's title also has some interesting twists let's start with the Polish version where they call it minions how to steal the moon yeah for some reason they decided that was the best way to translate despicable me this caused some problems later when illumination released the actual Minions movie in the Turkish version It's called crazy Thief which is also a pretty unusual Choice the Spanish DB went with grew my favorite villain and it's unclear whose favorite villain he is probably Margot in Armenia it's ugly me and in German it's I'm simply encourageable let me know in the comments what the movie is called in other languages you know I'm sure everyone would love to read these types of comments me included now in the Spanish version Gru's mom is voiced by the same actor who voiced guu himself it's probably meant to be a funny little joke and it does come across is pretty amusing take a look by the way here's a fun fact in this version Marco is voiced by Anna D Aras here's another thing about the Spanish version the minions don't speak their madeup language in this one they speak Spanish just like all the other [Music] characters again it's a strange choice that kind of takes away from the minion's unique charm all right let's keep going remember are those minor characters from the beginning of the movie the ones who went to Egypt in the original that little boy's name is Justin but in the Ukrainian version they changed it to athus and in the Chinese version he's called [Music] Tintin speaking of that scene there's another weird change in the Ukrainian version in the original the man and woman are husband and wife but in the Ukrainian dep the man is the woman's son a have no idea why they changed that honey take my picture I got the pyramid in my [Music] hand in the scene where the girls first enter Gru's house idth calls him a sadist in the Ukrainian version while the original has reference to the musical Annie when we got adopted by a bald guy I thought this would be more like [Music] Annie the French version replaced the any reference with one to Sleeping Beauty at the movies beginning in the Mexican DB grew jokes about being Bol it actually came out pretty great nice work got to be pulling on my leg in the Spanish version there's a funny little mistake at the very end the news reader accidentally says good new instead of good news it's a hilarious moment this time good Triumph there's also a scene in the crinian version with a pretty obvious joke about a certain male body part for me it's hard to say if the American version also has this kind of joke but the Ukrainian one definitely does try this on for size now let's talk about some interesting and adult-oriented moments with Miss head first in the Chinese version her name is scaa hi Miss we're back second in the scene where grw adopts the girls there's a joke about a donkey face in the original you have a face well the Mexican DB changed that so g talks about Miss H's body he says it looks like a to a musical instrument at the beginning of the movie The American version has a song with the lyrics despicable M is so to see Despicable Me in the Russian version they completely removed the lyrics and left only the melody it's not clear why they did that but that's the way it is despite this the Russians did some interesting things with the English text in some scenes for example in this one Gro voiced the text and it looks quite fitting also in another scene the bank's name is voiced as if it were coming from a loudspeaker nicely done [Music] Brothers in one scene Agnes calls grew Santa in the original like Santa their arm minan version kept Santa but interestingly this version was officially shown with their minion subtitles and in the subtitles they mistakenly wrote Satan instead of Santa it's quite an error Sant the Polish version replaced Santa with St Nicholas he's basically the equivalent of Santa but there are still some differences there's also a scene with grw in the original where there's a joke about farts I said dart gun not okay many versions successfully adapted this word play but I can't show you all of them because it's hard to translate however the Turkish version did something very strange they left the word dark in English making the whole scene confusing for Turkish viewers only those who know English would understand it I'm not sure why they chose to do [Music] that the German version did something really cool throughout the movie Margo uses formal versions of words when talking to GRU in the German DB this creates the impression that she doesn't see Gru as a close figure which is understandable but she starts using informal words when Gru redeems himself and truly becomes close to Margot this shift shows that she's finally accepting him all these versions of the movie were pretty interesting I especially enjoyed the Mexican Spanish and Ukrainian dubs by the way guys as you
