Damn... it's been that long already?
Sad part is that this event was a combination of catastrophic failures between so many agencies, not just the ship sinking.
So much could've been saved if the leaderships were willing to take charge.
This film was mentioned in the latest thread on this disaster, along with discussion of the factors that led to the botching of the rescue. The thread before that was even more informative, including a first-hand report from a sailor on the US ship that raced to the rescue (they were 2.5 hours away and only arrived after the ship had capsized).
This documentary is about a half hour long, and powerful. I didn’t know much about the disaster from what little was covered in the news but this film really draws out some details, all of them gut wrenching. I think I cried twice.
Almost everyone in SK was affected by this.
I tried to watch it a second time and I couldn’t stomach it.
This is infuriating. All those life-pods right there where the captain bailed. Telling people to "stay put" instead of getting them in the life-rafts in the water.
God bless all those civilian divers for doing what they did. They’re the real heroes in my opinion. That one guy said he would dive 4 to 5 times a day, which was probably exhausting.
And to do that in freezing waters with strong currents with it being completely pitch black takes a lot courage.
RIP to the one diver who killed himself years after him helping rescue, I can’t imagine to images that he couldn’t get out of his head.
Do they actually talk about how the captain tried to escape while leaving the other passengers inside?
Something that struck me about this vidoe is how bad the leadership culture in South Korea must have been. The fact that some official made an off hand remark about a video feed caused people below to seemingly concentrate on that and take it as priority. It seemed like actions were being taken to impress leadership instead of taking the best action.
I think this needs to be seen by everybody - I've never heard about this tragedy before and that movie is just heartbreaking and gut-wrenching. I cried multiple times while watching.
I was working in Korea when this happened. The news was on at the cafeteria TV. The sinking feeling will never leave me.
