on May 17 2009 the world would change forever now that might be a jarring way to start off this video but it is true the world would change forever just slowly over the next 10 years or so on that day in 2009 minecraft a video game created by Markus Pearson otherwise known as knotch would be released onto the tig source forums for the world to obsess over for the next decade and more but this isn't just any video game when minecraft was released there was a monumental shift in the landscape of the world of gaming on the rise while games certainly did exist that did not have a heavy emphasis on graphics with Minecraft even being inspired by a game called infiniminer minecraft was being made and released in real time with versions coming out as quickly as notches fingers could even type a little over 10 years later minecraft would become the most sold video game of all time simply put there was no going back this game on a scale that's been absolutely unmatched has inspired millions of individuals it's given people a canvas unlike any other and an all new way to create artwork of any kind minecraft is a sandbox game a game full of infinite wonders and endless possibilities now the term sandbox game has existed for quite a long time before minecraft came about with games like Garry's Mod coming to mind but not Chuck the concept to a different level if you had an idea it was possible within Minecraft and if by some strange chance that your idea was not possible chances are there was an update on the horizon that would eventually make it possible I mean seriously who would have thought that these two items a redstone torch and redstone on their own would allow for a 16-bit arithmetic logic unit to be created inside of a silly little block game minecraft has been people's playground for almost 11 years now you don't make the world's best-selling game of all time without leaving a last impact but now I want you to think about something else throughout the course of history people have asked existential questions to anything culturally relevant what would life be like without the Beatles where would we be without star wars what about Harry Potter these things are all extremely difficult questions to answer undoubtedly the music film and book landscape would be very different than the world we live in today due to the absolute magnitude of Minecraft I think the question could easily be applied here as well which is what we're doing for this video while I could sit here all day and talk about Minecraft successes we eventually have to roll the intro at some point so without any further ado let's get right into it this video is sponsored by MC pro hosting [Music] like I said on May 17th 2009 the world would change forever knotch the creator of Minecraft uploaded the first rendition of what would become Minecraft to the take source forums before we get too far there's absolutely no way that knotch could have ever imagined that his own game would have gotten to the point that it's gotten to today his idea was simple take games that inspired him and give them a clearer image games like infiniminer and Dwarf Fortress were the basis for this creation and from there well the future was bright if not she had never created minecraft though what would have happened well infiniminer may have still existed although it may have not gotten much bigger than it alternately did in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun Zakk Barth the creator of infiniminer stated I stopped working on infinity miner when the source code was leaked it was totally my fault as that's what I get for releasing an unmet assembly but it nevertheless enabled hackers to create hack clients and players upset with my balancing decisions to fork and write their own clients and servers he then said the act of borrowing ideas is integral to the creative process there are games that came before Infini miner and their games that will come after minecraft that's how it works and honestly he's not wrong ever since the initial release of Minecraft we've seen exactly what Zach Barth has talked about happen games have taken what they've seen and loved from Minecraft and utilized that inspiration to create bigger and better projects one very big and notable feature has been the retro aspect of minecraft design when minecraft was released players were pretty quick to say it looks retro it looks old I'm not gonna like this now it's just synonymous with Minecraft without minecraft graphical design choices we may have not seen the massive influx of retro inspired graphics in today's landscape as often as we do games like terraria may not exist at all voxel-based engines also probably wouldn't have taken off as much with independent developers games like cube world trove block fortress Ace of Spades and the upcoming hightail game would have probably never existed at all in game creation elements also probably wouldn't be featured as heavily in other games while yes games like Garry's Mod came out upwards of 5 years before minecraft Garry's Mod wasn't as easily accessible as minecraft its impact was never dismissed but it was fairly difficult for the layman to understand minecraft was released and that was changed entirely it was difficult to understand at first primarily because finding information on the game was really difficult and required a lot of research but it was possible to figure everything out without a tutorial and that's where minecraft biggest strengths came in if you could think it you could build it one block at a time if you owned a copy of Minecraft there's a good chance that you have a deep personal history with the game I think it's safe to say that without Minecraft your history would probably be much different in the case of myself I would probably be in a different situation I mean my history with video creation dates all the way back to 2004 through the Tony Hawk video game franchise which I still actually make videos for today I mean the antvenom youtube channel isn't even my first youtube channel it's my fourth before minecraft YouTube videos became my full-time job I was actually going to a vocational school for computer tech and computer science training it's safe to say that if minecraft and this channel hadn't taken off the way that they did I wouldn't be where I am today not even close as for Michael McGill he probably wouldn't be doing what he's doing now I mean he currently helps co produce content for this YouTube channel and as well live streams on Twitch making primarily minecraft content without minecraft there's no telling where he'd be on YouTube or twitch simply put but we're not the only youtubers that would have been affected without Minecraft the YouTube landscape would likely be immensely different than it is today minecraft heavily popularized the serialized formula of Let's Plays and gameplay content on YouTube yes it absolutely existed but minecraft made it huge careers and channels were blasted into the stratosphere and some celebrities were made overnight with Minecraft content is easily bin jabal meaning that if you watched one video you probably were going to watch another and another and another without the creation of Minecraft almost none of your favorite creators would be where they are today I mean cutie pies first video was minecraft while it wasn't his most popular upload who knows how the course of time would have worked out for youtubers like him youtubers like CaptainSparklez may have not been CaptainSparklez he still would potentially be making call of duty videos people like skydoesminecraft wouldn't be sky does MINECRAFT he would be sky the kid the runescape youtuber minecon events and all of these amazing stories wouldn't have happened at all friends you wouldn't have made SMP live would have never existed at all we wouldn't be making this video you wouldn't be watching this at all life in reality would be different without this game we'd all probably be in a very different place in more ways than we could possibly imagine minecraft has connected millions of people has enabled money to be raised for great causes both officially through Mojang and unofficially through creators people have been helped communities have been formed and that's literally only scratching the surface that's just the tip of the iceberg knotch Mojang Microsoft everyone involved thanks another company that I want to thank sincerely is the sponsor for this video MC pro hosting if you guys
