since the Inception of coarse field in 1995 the ballpark has gained a reputation for being kind to hitters and being unkind to Pitchers why is Coors only kind to some well much of it has to do with the Field's high elevation which stands at 5200 feet above sea level which is 4 100 feet higher than the next closest with the addition of large outfields it's no surprise to see this field consistently rank among the highest OPS average run totals home runs triples and doubles hit there every year but with the natural advantages hitters have here we asked today what if every single player in MLB history played at this home run Haven well let's find out totally sport task Major League for this video I have to thank Sports reference for The Unique tools they give out along with being able to find almost any stat you can think of throughout the history of the four major American Sports they allow you to examine how players would fare and neutralize settings in any park in any year and the benefits of the site don't end there you can compare teams and players in any way you possibly can imagine want to know what plumber was the best hitter in 1906 they got you want to know who was the best hitting plumber in 2023 they got you and guess what you can get 10 off your annual membership by using the code esk10 links will be available in the description and pin comment and how is the great site known as Sports reference able to make these projections we're going to see they do this as they explain by accounting for player stats number of games played ballpark Factor number of games expected runs scored in the league that year and other factors that are adjusted to find these projections the ID idea is practically the same for pictures except for a few very simple mathematical equations of course these projections can't factor in things like an increase in level of play caused by integration mergers improved Talent levels training and needles accidentally Landing in a player's butt cheek and for this video we will only be looking at players who had at least three thousand played appearances or pitched at least 2500 innings in Major League Baseball's modern era we will not be including any independent leagues for Seasons we will be looking at players who had over 500 played appearances and pitchers who threw over 200 Innings and at the end of the video we will give out the 1999 coarse Fields Cy Young and MVP so stick around to see who takes home the prestigious award and you may ask why 1999 course field because that's the year Coors was at its friendliest and considering that balls weren't being put in humidors yet and the amount of players who may have been taking sensible injections as prescribed by their doctor then it's no surprise how friendly this park was to hitters so let's start out by looking at the careers of hitters in the stat everyone was waiting for home runs [Music] ever played at 1999 course field for their whole career the all-time home run leader would be none other than hammer and Hank Aaron and all in all he would hit 1014 home runs just below the average career home runs for players and Road to the Show Hank would also compile the highest RBI total with 3630 which is 1300 more than the record he said and you know normal conditions Hank would also be the only one to hit over a thousand home runs as Barry Bonds would finish with 998 home runs Willie Mays would add 225 home runs to his total to finish with 875 home runs to surpass Alex Rodriguez and leave him out of the top five the only player to join the top 10 would be Reggie Jackson who would add 213 home runs to his total to hit 776 career home runs and leave Jim Tomy out of the top 10. among players who started their career in the 21st century or played at least 10 years in this Century Albert pools would of course top the list adding 206 home runs to his total to be the fourth member of the 900 Club A-Rod would finish behind him with 847 home runs followed by Jim Tomy with 761 and Manny Ramirez Miguel Cabrera David Ortiz and Nelson Cruz would all join the 600 home run Club as at the time of recording this video Manny would hit 696 home runs Mickey would hit 666 home runs Big Papi would hit 660 and Nelson Cruz would have 624 the 500 home run club would no longer be as exclusive as instead of 28 players being a part of this club there would be 69. nice nice and for those who are curious Bartolo Colon would still have his one home run okay for his first hit of the year he drives one deep left field that goes Upton back down the wall it's out of here Bartolo has done it The Impossible has happened moving on to career batting average seven of the top 10 would consist of players who start their career before the first world war ended with Ty Cobb topping the list with a 431 batting average interestingly Ty Cobb would also reclaim his title as the all-time hit Leader by compiling 5818 hits in 1999 Coors Field and stats like this are why the missing factors such as integration change in style of play and mentality can't tell the whole story but going back to the top 10 the player with the top average outside of players who began their career before Woodrow Wilson left office is Tony Gwynn who would have hit exactly 400. the other two in the top 10 are Rod Carew who would have hit 394 and Ted Williams finishing 10th who would have hit 388. in the top 50 there are only two players who started their careers in the 21st century those two are Ichiro Suzuki and Michael Nelson trout who plays 40th in 149th Ichiro would hit 368 and Mike Trout would be just behind him as he would hit 365 at the time this video was recorded and what the batting average stats show here really is how little batting average is valued now as including child in Ichiro only seven of the top hundred would be players who started their career in the 21st century or played at least 10 years in this Century so let's move on to a stat that is valued by fans young and old a stat that has replaced batting average on many scoreboards in a 2018 poll asking 70 major league players what they feel the most important stat in judging a hitter is the top answer was on base plus slugging and why may this be well Charlie Blackman mentions if you're a non-base guy it accounts for that if you're a slugging guy it accounts for that if you can do both you get rewarded big time so let's take a look leading the way in the valuable status none other than the shoeiotani of The 1910s Babe Ruth the Sultan of Swat who leads us at in normal conditions would have an Ops of 1.302 playing here and right behind him would be Ted Williams having an Ops of 1.244 interesting here is that three of the top 10 or 21st century players who are still playing and number four is Mike Trout with an Ops and 1.192 at the time of recording and rounding out the top 10 are Aaron judge and Juan Soto would judge having an Ops of 1.139 and Soto having an Ops of 1.128 and 12 players started in the 21st century or played at least 10 years in this Century join these three on the top 50 list and 17 more join within the top 100 a massive increase from the amount of 21st century players making up the top hundred in average showing how valuable Ops has become and how the game has changed for those who don't know how slugging percentage is calculated it's found by taking a player's total bases and dividing it by their at-bats it has a number of home runs has increased over the last few decades a player's slugging percentage currently carries more value and speaking of slugging percentage let's look at the s in Ops topping the list is Babe Ruth who would add 89 points to his regular slogan percentage the slug 779. Michael Nelson trout would be the only player to join the top five after adding 124 points to his percentage to hit 709 and kick Mark Maguire out of the top five along the way three 21st century players placed in the top 20 and they are Yankee teammates Aaron judge and Giancarlo Stanton along with known Yankee killer and in-game high-fiver Manny Ramirez judge with slug 689 Manny was slow 659 and Stanton would slug 646 an additional 13 21st century player to join these three in the top 50 and 24 more would join to complete the top 100. when we move on to the O in Ops topping the list is Mr Frozen head himself Ted Williams who would add 47 points to his regular on base percentage to reach 529 the only player joining the top five hero is Ty Cobb who kicks out Lou Gehrig and Garrick actually completely drops out of the top 10. the only 21st century player in the top 10 here is Juan Soto wutai Eddie Collins with an on-base percentage of 491 only Mike Trout would join Juan in the top 25 and four more would join Juan and Mike in the top 50. including known on base guy and guy who barely made the 3 000 plate appearance cut Nick Johnson it should also be noted that Billy Hamilton comes in at 17th but he played 120 years before that Billy Hamilton looking at the careers of these incredible hitters if they all played at 1999 coarse field throughout their entire career unsurprisingly they would be even better stats Rose for everyone across the board and interestingly some head stats rise higher than others and from these stats though numerous factors can't be included we can still see the evolution of the game from changes in hitting philosophies to values and certain stats now let's look closer at these changes and see the seasons hitters would have if they played at 1999 Coors Field runs that slightly open stance feet fairly close together crowding the plate the picture [Applause] starting off with the set that everyone wants to see the single season home run leader would remain the same and that's 2001 Barry Bonds who would have hit an insane 95 home runs in 2001 which is a home run every 1.7 games and regardless of narrative Barry Bonds played in a park that wasn't friendly to hitters Oracle Park in 2001 ranked third to last in park Factor so jumping from a pitcher-friendly park to a hitter friendly Park bonds would naturally put up rookie mode video game numbers but be we're looking at the rest of the Home Run list I want to highlight who would be behind him if all leagues were included 1937 Josh Gibson would have hit 87 home runs in 1999 Coors Field important to note here is that Gibson played in The Negro leaks that year and only played 39 games but in those 39 games he absolutely went off hitting 20 home runs driving in 73 runs and hitting 473 while having an Ops of 1.474 due to these incredible stats he also would have had the highest RBI total in his 1937 season by driving in 331 Runners then just two years later in 1939 he would have driven in 298 Runners of course numbers like this make us realize how much of a shame it is that we never got to see these great and Eagle league players play in the mob a small sample size in the game being different is why we see players from the live ball era make up a majority of the top of the RBI list and interesting to note leading the way in the stat for Seasons played after the second world war would be 2020 Jose Abreu and of course we have to remind you that only 60 games were played this year so this is why 2020 Jose Abreu was projected to have 238 RBIs tying 1927 Lou Gehrig at second all time in 2020 Luke Voigt is projected to have 77 home runs tying 2017 Giancarlo Stanton for seventh all time going back to home runs matching Josh Gibson with 87 home runs and finishing second among major league players would be 1998 Mark Maguire and following him would be none other than 2022 Aaron judge who would have hit 85 home runs four more than 2001 Sammy Sosa and five more than 1998 Sami Sosa and in real life baseball and angered college football fans watched judge go down to the wire to pass Roger maris's 1961 Al home run record by one in 2022 but if they both played a 1999 Coors Field then the race would not go down to the wire as judge would have hit eight more home runs than Maris in college football fans would have been able to watch Education Connection versus Monsters University in peace for seasons in the post-bond era rounding out the top three after 2022 judge would be as mentioned 2017 Giancarlo Stanton tying 2020 Luke Voigt with 77 home runs per second and tying for third would be 2013 Chris Davis and 2010 Jose Bautista who both would have finished with 69 home runs nice before looking at average let's look at an important stat for Barry Bonds it's no secret that Barry Bonds was the most feared hitter in the game for many years and when you may be the most feared hitter in the history of the game you're not going to see a lot of great pitches to hit Barry Bonds has the three highest season Walk totals with this 2004-2002 and 2001 Seasons bonds had a combined 607 walks in these three seasons with 223 of those being intentional but if he played in 1999 Coors Field he would have added 179 by drawing 786 walks in just three seasons I'm sure the total would have actually been higher because it's probably best to avoid a guy who would have hit 95 home runs in a season noteworthy of Bond's incredible walk total his bonds had three seasons that would rank in the top 50 that predated when he supposedly accidentally stuck a needle in his butt cheek so regardless of narrative these stats further cement that Barry Bonds did not need needles to improve his puke moving on to average unsurprisingly the top of the list is filled with dead ball era players 1924 Rogers Hornsby would add 60 points to his record average to hit 484 but aside from horn speed the list is dominated by Ty Cobb with six of the top 10 seasons coming from him and when you compile 5818 hits you're bound to have a few good seasons of the 26 times hitters would hit over 450 only three of these Seasons would occur after the end of the second world war with 1994 Tony Gwynn hitting 451 important to note here is Gwen did not get to play a full season that year due to the strike England's Chase to a 400 average is one of the many story lines we missed out on thanks to the strike and aside from 94 Tony Gwynn there would be 1977 Rod Carew hitting 455 and 1980 George Brett hitting 456 to be the only other two post-world War II players to surpass her 450 average if we lived in a world where everyone played at 1999 Coors Field the 400 average would no longer be the Milestone it is as 320 hitters would surpass the 399 Mark of those 320 Seasons only 27 occur in the 21st century with only six of those making the top hundred 2002 Barry Bonds would lead the way with a 441 average behind him would be 2020 DJ Lemay Hugh hitting 430. once again if you didn't hear the news there were only 60 games played that year the other four of these are 2012 Melky Cabrera hitting 425. important to note here the Milkman missed 50 games this year due to PD use in 2009 Joe Maurer 2008 Chipper Jones in 2004 Ichiro Suzuki would all hit 422. moving on to Player's favorite stat OPS this stat is absolutely dominated by early 2000s Barry Bonds in 1920s Babe Ruth with nine of the top 11 Seasons coming from bonds or Ruth the same three seasons Bonds hit walk records he also set Ops records with his 2001-2002 and 2004 Seasons all reaching an Ops of 1.594 or better and the only other player to reach an Ops of 1.500 would be 1920 Babe Ruth and looking at the top 100 on this list 22 of those 100 Seasons would be from Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds with the Babe having 13 and Barry having nine the player who denied a top 10 of just Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth would be Ted Williams as is 1957 and 1941 Seasons would make him just a third player to Eclipse a 1.400 mark year among 21st century players aside from bonds six would have an Ops over one point 300 2001 Jason Giambi 2015 Bryce Harper 2002 Jim Tomy 2022 Aaron judge 2001 Sammy Sosa in 2020 Juan Soto moving to the S and Ops we still have a top five of just Barry and the Babe though he would have 1998 Mark McGuire 1994 Jeff Bagwell in 2001 Sami Sosa joining the top 10 and they all looked down at 2001 Barry Bonds but between 2001 Barry Bonds in 1939 Jimmy Fox 49 of these 100 Seasons occur between 1993 to 2022 and for added context 1993 was the first year that 4 000 home runs were hit League wide in the mob and since that year there have been only two seasons without 4 000 home runs being hit in both of these years were shortened so these stats give us greater insight to why slugging has Rose like a Tyler Rogers pitch in the this time O2 pitch got him and when we look at the O and Ops all before and after are looking at a different Berry this one being the 2004 Barry walks a lot bonds we have a newcomer to the top five with 1941 in 1957 Ted Williams joined the top five on base Club interesting to note here is 2012 Joey Votto would be the only 21st century player not named Barry Bonds or 2021 Soto within the top 35. the most interesting man in baseball had a great chance at winning MVP in the year the world ended but his season was cut short due to a mid-season knee surgery following 2012 Votto 10 21st century Seasons make the top 100 with three of those Being Mike Trout seasons and an additional Berry bond season this one being the final Edition of the top 50 highest single season Ops in will be history only one comes from the year 1999 and who could it be yes you're right it was a Colorado Rockies right fielder Larry Walker in that season Walker won the batting title by hitting 379. while hitting 37 home runs and driving in 115 Runners he also led the league in the O the S and the o plus s which led him to an All-Star selection a Silver Slugger and a top 10 finish in the MVP voting he also won a gold glove despite giving a ball to a fan with two outs five years earlier and Walker doesn't know how many outs there were [Applause] yeah and when we look at his home away splits for that year we see a real-life example of the advantage in just 66 home games Walker hit 26 of his 37 home runs hit 70 of his 115 RBIs had a batting average of 461 and an Ops of 1.410 and in 1999 Larry Walker wasn't the only Rocky hitting at Coors Field that year the Rockies led the league in home batting average home runs RBIs Ops hits and runs but in a way games they finish in the bottom five of those same categories along with the expected poor pitching performances the huge splits are part of the reason the Rockies finished 18 games under 500 leading to a last place finish in the NL West after looking at the video game numbers these hitters would put up every season it's time to look at the real victims of this situation pictures they ask you how you are you just have to say that you're fine when you're not really fine but you just can't get into it because they would never understand a known problem for the Colorado Rockies besides giving up generational talent for nothing is the reluctance top pitchers have in signing with the team given the disadvantages they have and the numbers back it up since their Inception in 1993 the Rockies have finished in the bottom 10 of Team era and home games in all but one season That season was 2007 where they went to the World Series and in team era and home games they finished 11th and in the year we're looking at they set a team record by having a team era of 7.11 in home games was no surprise pictures aren't sliding down the mountains to join the Rockies for a look at pictures we will primarily focus on season stats but looking at career stats unsurprisingly eras it's aloud home runs allowed and walks would all go up putting things into perspective the all-time career Era Leader would be none other than Clayton Edward Kershaw who would have a career era of 3.74 a whole 1.21 higher than his career era at the time of recording and interestingly 1.08 lower than his career era at Coors Field many of the pitchers near the top in these categories are dead ball pitchers and if you want to learn more about how and why dead ball pitchers were so dominant and how the dead ball era ended with just one tragic pitch delivered to Ray Chapman then check out my latest video to explore more on the topic but aside from deadball pictures the modern pitcher ranking second in Era and first in whip would be Pedro Martinez and let's focus on what many consider to be the greatest pitching season of all time and that's the 2000 season of Pedro Martinez there's been many dominant Seasons By pitchers 1966 Sandy Koufax 1968 Bob Gibson 1985. Gooden 1997 Roger Clemens 2021 Anthony Rizzo factor that separates the season of Pedro in 2000 is his competition the steroid era perhaps had its peak from 1998 to 2002 with the excitement of hitters putting up insane numbers as told throughout the video the two years that Pedro won the AL Cy Young gave us the two highest OPS totals League wide in MLB history and aside from the year 1930 the 2000 season gave us the highest League wide era of 4.76 and what was Pedro's era that same year 1.74 so from this single stat alone it's easy to see why most would pick 2 000 Pedro as the greatest ever but what if 2000 Pedro pitched in the most hitter-friendly Park of all time as you may expect his numbers would still be incredible Pedro would be the only pitcher to finish the season with a sub 2 era reaching an era of 1.95 Pedro would also have the greatest whip of all time finishing with a whip of 0.809 0.133 lower than the next closest of 2019 Justin Verlander in the dominance of Pedro in this time does not just stretch to one year just one year prior Pedro put up a season that was near as dominant ranking third on the highest year by year era League wide and second in Ops is the 1999 season and in that season Pedro finished with an era of 2.07 while striking out 19 more hitters than he did in 2004 less Innings and how would he fare a 1999 course field he would still rank top 10 all time with an era of 2.56 the same as 2015 Zach Greinke and along with Greg Maddox he would be the only pitcher with two seasons in the top ten and for whip 1999 Pedro would finish fifth all time with a whip of 1.031 giving him two top 10 seasons and making him the only one to accomplish his feat and similar to the way 2001 Barry Bonds played in a park that wasn't friendly to hitters Pedro pitched in a park that wasn't friendly to Pitchers 2 000 Fenway Park ranked fifth in park factor that year and the year before that the park ranked third so to put it simply 1999 and 2000 Pedro Martinez would dominate anywhere and actually how about we put 2 000 Pedro Martinez in the most picture-friendly Park available which is the 1908 St Louis Cardinals home park Robinson field and why was this park so friendly to Pitchers well like many ballparks in this time there were strange Dimensions Robinson field had a 500 foot center field 520 in left Center 470 to left and 290 to right and along with 120 foot backstop it was pretty easy to keep balls in the park but if Pedro went back in time to 1908 to pitch with Adam Wainwright in his rookie year 2000 Pedro would have an era of 0.7 while having a 0.568 whip and compiling 18 wins and 5 losses he would also strike out 270 batters just 94 less than what 1973 Nolan Ryan would do here and let's be real if 2 000 Pedro Martinez did Pitch here his numbers would probably be way better than this because I'd really love to see guys like Patsy O'Rourke or red Murray or Ray Charles face 2000 Pedro Martinez their heads would spin before they went back to work at the coal mine the absolute dominance of Pedro that year is the reason 2 000 Pedro Martinez will not just be receiving the 1999 course field Cy Young he will also be receiving the 1999 course field MVP make it simple obviously hitters would Thrive here and well pitchers wouldn't having this version of Pedro would make him the most valuable to any team in this situation for my top three I have to put 2022 Aaron judge ahead of 2001 Barry Bonds simply because Aaron wasn't taking the same prescriptions as Barry obviously Barry and even 1998 Mark Maguire had better numbers on paper but we can only imagine what judge would do with these injections and for hitters and pitchers who pitched in the first half of the 20th century it's hard to compare with the competition players in the later half and 21st century faced and going back to judge he put up these numbers in the era of analytics and the final year of the shift and as we see from this point on it appears to beat shoayo Tani in the MVP race you're going to have to put up generational numbers and speaking of shohei if we had a fantasy draft for this fantasy world of 1999 Coors Field being forever and always of course I'm taking shoheiotani first for the simple fact that you are getting an elite hitter and pitcher at the same time and taking a look at shohei Stats here among starting pitchers who have pitched at least 400 Innings shohei would rank in the top 10 of era and the top 15 of whip as for his offense he would rank in the top 100 for both slugging and Ops and comparing to the other most famous two-way player Babe Ruth shohei has more strikeouts than him and 900 less Innings so it's pretty obvious I'm drafting shohei Otani first overall with pumpkin head era Berry bonds behind the stats found thanks to the great tools given by stathead are not to be taken too serious it of course is just fun and interesting to see how hitters would terrorize pitchers if this was their reality and how the great pitchers throughout the last 50 years would still be great here but before we go I just want to remind you once again you can get 10 off your annual membership at sports reference by using the code esk10 while we have looked at a lot throughout this video there are still so much more to look at links will be available in the description and the pin comment and by the way if you are interested in watching games at a ballpark where offense is high and as a result pitching becomes mediocre all the while the GM keeps selling off valuable pieces for very little return well then have I got the team for you foreign
