what exactly does the rest of the frostpunk world look like it would be easy to simply imagine it as a snowball earth scenario however considering historic information and the game's own lore this might not even be necessary remember that the generators that the game is based around were built in the resource-rich north where they could be isolated from the collapse of civilization this means that extreme cold temperatures we experience in the game aren't necessarily representative of the conditions in the rest of the world there are multiple possible scenarios for the rest of the frostpunk world 1. a prolonged year without summer type effect in which the grounded rivers have difficulty falling in the spring and growing conditions are limited 2. severe abnormal winters with limited to no growing season in europe or the rest of north america three nearly year-round snow and frost in europe but not necessarily the same extreme cold that we see in the game i.e heavy glaciation of the northern hemisphere similar to the ice age 4. the whole world faces a snowball earth type glaciation like in snow piercer scenarios 1 and 2 are realistically within the realm of possibility would make sense as explored in the last autumn mission the events tell us that many of the workers and convicts are there just to get steady meals it also explores conditions within the rest of the british empire as the frost creeps and causes crop shortages and the cold drives migration to the warmer colonies within the timeline of frostpunk the last autumn probably takes place a year or two after the initial eruptions as the situation of severe frost famine and unrest forced the government to pursue radical solutions like building the generators however the frost hasn't taken serious hold yet at the start of the last autumn as people doubt whether or not the generators are even necessary this would suggest that at least at this point even as far north as the generators are supposed to be it still is not under a state of perpetual frost at least not yet considering the fact that frostpunk 2 is going to take place in 1916 around 30 years after the events of frostpunk and the frostlands are still a central feature of the world which suggests that there has been a feedback system that has kept the world cold other than the volcanic winters this would mean that there has been such extensive glaciation that the earth's albedo still remains as high as during the volcanic winter it would then appear that frostpunk's world actually proceeds through all four of these scenarios however i would suggest something between three and four to make the most sense both realistically and in universe the main theme throughout every scenario in frostpunk has been how far is humanity willing to go in order to survive frostpunk's main goal unlike other survival games is not only ensuring the physical survival of your people such as against starvation or the cold but you're also tasked with maintaining the survival of society and civilization it would then follow that the collapse of civilization due to the frost famine and unrest rather than merely the cold itself is the real impetus behind building the generator cities consider recent real-world cold snaps in texas and maryland it isn't that humanity is incapable of building infrastructure that is resilient to such conditions for instance the great lake region around upstate new york and ohio faces much colder temperatures than texas or maryland and also faces the heaviest snowfall on earth on a regular basis the issue here is that the infrastructure of texas or maryland isn't prepared for such abnormal conditions which leaves critical infrastructure vulnerable when such conditions arise if such conditions were to persist for an extended period of time combined with famine and the government's inability to do anything about it would assuredly lead towards social unrest and then the government would do one of the only things they could do in such a situation hatch an escape plan and all it would really take to set this chain of events in motion would be a couple of major eruptions in the spring to prevent the world from waking from its winter slumber and you will find yourself living in the world of frostpunk
