What Happened To Everyone Who Joined The Superman Family?

a superhero is only as liveable as the supporting cast that surrounds them i mean where would batman be without robin or spider-man without jay jonah jameson the same is true of superman who has a wide range of amazing and iconic allies that comprise the superman family but where are these heroes and characters now with the winding paths of dc continuity making fans unleash their inner anti-monitor things can get more than a little bit confusing i'm ewen this is one culture comics and here's what happened to everyone who joined the superman family number 10. superman there's nowhere but at the start than at the beginning with the guide this surrogate family is named after the man of steel himself superman we'll know the lesson of krypton's origin by now seeing as how one of those seems convinced that it's the only superman story that can ever be told outside the comics medium but enough of the films the past decade has seen some of the most interesting changes ever brought to the character when it comes to the comics first of all there was the new 52 which was a well it was a time go check out our video on it if you want to learn more about how wild it was and especially for superman it was a big deal but after the 2016 reboot known as rebirth things really turned around for superman with the new 52 clark kent dead he was replaced by the og superman who had actually settled down with lois lane and had a son named jonathan in more recent news superman finds himself infected with an alien parasite that's also slowly killing him which just so happens to line up with a timeline of the recent dc story future states which shows superman as having died in the years between the current dc timeline and the 31st century so while superman is technically still around the mantle has kind of sort of been passed on which i'll explain more about in a bit number nine lois lane even before officially becoming a part of the ken's family lois lane has to be on a list like this she and superman are inseparable supes and lois have been married broken up just friends complete strangers and dc even tried to hook up suits of wonder woman of all people and leave lois in the dust but lois and clark always find their way back to one another even if dc has to swap out superman with an already married version of himself in order to do it the only major difference with the current lois lane is that in her original universe she married clarke years back and they had a child but fortunately this has allowed her to take a much more active varied and even invested role in superman's stories she recently took up a leading role in greg rooker and mike perkins solo comic of the same name which was really good and also in event leviathan where she assembled her own secret team of elite dc detectives to unearth a shadowy conspiracy number eight john kent rounding out the first three and the core members of the super fam we have by far the best thing to ever happen to the superman mythos in a long long time john kent aka superboy john is the son of clark and lois inheriting all of his father's powers but having the advantage of having a guy who's actually been around the bend with this nonsense before as his father knowing he's half alien basically since the beginning has his subsides and downsides though on one hand it's easier to keep the secret now that he knows there's a secret to be kept but on the other he's a little boy with the temperament demeanor and maturity thereof who is fully aware that he has godlike powers fortunately john's a sweet kid and clark and lois are great parents so he never goes full bright burn on us which is a good thing given the amount of evil superman stories that have come out in the last decade have made my eyes bleed recently john went through something of a soft reboot when his uncle offered to take him into space to do some good old-fashioned exploration for a few months in a shockingly scientifically accurate twist for a superman book the story remembers that time works differently out in space than on earth so a few months to us is over a decade to john this change is one of the better received retcons of brian bennett assistant on these super books and with john officially taking over a superman from his father in the upcoming tom taylor series it looks like this change is here to stay number 7. kara danvers aka supergirl there are so many versions of supergirl over the decades that it's nearly impossible to keep track of all of them no seriously please don't make me do that because good lord that's a big old can of writhing kryptonian worms to open so if it's all the same to everyone i'll just stick with the original that everyone has actually heard of cara zorel well after the rebirth event rebooted her continuity to fit more in line with the insanely popular supergirl cw show the maid of might has mostly been doing what she's always done kicking around with her cousin helping out however the recently launched supergirl woman of tomorrow series by tom king and bill chris evely has introduced quite the shake-up for her status quo supergirl is now currently traveling the stars of an alien girl named ruthie and crypto the superdog since the series has literally just started it's not clear where this adventure will take cara but there's definitely an interesting shift in her storyline all the same number six conor kent if there's a runner up for the most complicated character in the super family behind supergirl it would be conor kenz aka superboy superboy is a clone created after superman was originally murdered by doomsday at least that's the post-crisis pre-new 52 origin for him but him being a clone is consistent across all modern versions of the character conor has been kicking around since his inception but no one really knew what to do with him until the original young justice came along and showed that his cocky abrasive nature can become electrifying when given the right team of characters to bounce off of since then he's been switched between young justice and the teen titans the former of which he resides with currently in the ongoing injustice series alongside other underrated characters like wonder girl and amethyst number 5. john henry irons another addition to the super family from the death of superman saga this time someone who ended up becoming a completely separate hero in their own right but one who was inspired by the masterial sacrifice to do good in the world it's steel steel started out as john henry irons an easy-going star lab scientist who like many idolized superman so when supes died at the hands of doomsday irons decided to try and carry on the legacy of the man of steel by taking that nickname to its logical conclusion essentially turning himself into a diy iron man superman hybrid steel as he proceeded to call himself became one of superman's most stalwart allies and one of the dc universe's most underrated characters as what he's doing now steele is currently operating out of metropolis alongside superwoman and his girlfriend lana lang number four jimmy olsen like lois lane jimmy olsen has been there since the beginning he's just one of those characters whose absence makes the superman universe feel incomplete as a character though jimmy has gone through quite a few different interpretations some versions portray him as a simple but earnest fool while others show him as a hard-hitting journalist in his own right likewise his status as superman's pal is either portrayed as jimmy being a tagalong who often has to be saved or as superman's most stalwart supporter we most recently saw jimmy take center stage in a 12-part maxi series about him by matt fraction and steve lieber which can best be described as the most wonderful kind of cuckoo bananas ever in this series jimmy's affinity for finding the weirdest parts of the dcu and then poking it with a stick is officially monetized with their daily planet because well that's the only way they're making any money anymore the jimmy olsen series has won the best books of the last couple of years and we can only hope there's more superbugs like it to come in the years ahead number three kong cannon when you're an icon like superman people pay attention to everything you say and do so it's no surprise that countries like china hear truth justice and the american way and think hmm this guy might not be on our side when the chips are down and so they try to remedy that by making their own superman with blackjack and hookers the lucky fella chosen for this was kong kennen a young man living in shanghai who was recruited by the government into the superman of china project when he impressed one of their agents by defending his bullying victim yeah he has some issues from a super villain they thus imbued kenan with the life force of the man of steel who was dead at the time while giving a schoolyard bully the powers of superman himself would be a planned destiny for disaster in any other scenario in canon's case the power and responsibility as well as the influence of superman after he was revived for the millionth time and track down his chinese counterpart helped him to mature greatly into the hero china needs we haven't seen much of him since since superman counterparts have always done poorly in their own solo series regardless of quality but we occasionally do hear from him so hopefully we'll see more out of the character in the future number two krypto the superdog crypto the superdog has been a mainstay of the superman universe since the silver age not necessarily since the beginning but long enough to become an inseparable part of superman's cast even at its edgiest and faux darkest no writer can resist finding a way to put crypto back in one way or another because he's such a good boy oh yes he is it's a good boy oh well anyway crypto is a dog from krypton gifted to a baby kalel by his parents if you're wondering how and why an alien planet can have dogs visually indistinguishable from earth dogs the answer is no one cares and neither should you crypto came to earth shortly after clark landed where he became his most faithful animal companion currently though he's traveling through space with supergirl as she tries to find her own way in the universe while crypto follows along to keep her company and number one lana lang lois lane is the woman clark married but the first woman he fell in love with was his childhood sweetheart lana lang and for the longest time that's all lana ever was a sort of what could have been character for clark sort of along the lines of gwen stacy and spider-man back when she didn't have a character obviously in recent years that ceased being good enough when the new 52 superman died his energy passed on to the new 52 lowest not the one who is john kent's mother the other one yet it's complicated as well as lana giving them different aspects of his abilities they rounded out into their own separate power sets although both got the basics like super strength and flight and so on and so forth lana got an evolved version of superman's heat vision gaining the ability to convert silver radiation into different forms of electromagnetic energy sort of like the superman red and blue stuff we got in the 1990s the two became superwoman with lana getting her new boyfriend john henry irons to help around a steal rounding out their team we haven't really heard much out of her since her short-lived solo book which concluded with her losing her powers but she is alive and well and that's what happened to everyone who joined the superman family who's your favorite character in superman's comics
