[Music] [Music] hello welcome to mosaic i'm so happy to see you my name is mariah mcmanus and i have been a mosaic since before i could walk and before i could talk i've been here forever my whole life and i absolutely love serving at mosaic i'm part of the hollywood team i get to write songs and sing on the worship team in our msc group and i love it i absolutely love it i serve here with my parents erwin and kim and my hero of a brother aaron and so many of the pivotal moments in my life have happened in within the community of mosaic i have found the greatest friends of my life here in this community i have realized dreams i have learned how to play music i was on stage for the very first time at mosaic leading worship i fell in love with songwriting so much of my life has been shaped within this community by the people of this community and about six years ago in the hollywood building i remember i was singing and leading worship and i saw a guy this guy had on a tank job in church and he had the most outrageous mustache you've ever seen later i found him i tried to find him he kind of like left church really fast and so over the weeks i spotted the guy with the mustache and i told all my friends about the guy with the mustache even though i'd never talked to him before later fast forward one thing led to another and we started dating and i don't know pretty much anything about this guy i had never known him we were not friends before i instagram stalked him i'll be honest with you but i had no context so i come to learn that he has moved here with his two best friends from nashville tennessee by way of oklahoma and arkansas and they came here to pursue a dream there were three guys living in a one-bedroom apartment two of them sleeping on the floor so this is the la dream you come here to pursue something and you end up sleeping in a one-bedroom apartment on wilcox and on the floor so i didn't know anything about him except that he moved here to pursue a dream to be a drummer to be in a band so as a musician as someone who loves music i've been doing this for like 12 years i'm like okay are you an aspiring drummer are you an actual drummer you know there's there's a difference i have no idea if he's talented at all but i'm like i'm obsessed with you so we'll get to that that issue when we face it we'll cross that bridge when we get to it so we're dating for like two weeks before he has his first show it was my birthday february 3rd 2015 when i heard him play the drums for the first time and two things could have gone extremely wrong on february 3rd 2015. one he could have been the worst drummer and ruined my birthday and two we would have broken up in the weeks to come slowly because if he's a bad drummer it's just hard to figure out you know and so that night we went to the sayers club in la and all of my friends were there and we were all just praying so hard that he's a good drummer that this band is good um because the future of our relationship depended on it so we're in there and out comes laney their first show in l.a and jake walks out with a white whole ensemble with his shirt unbuttoned and gets behind his left-handed kit props his leg up and starts just absolutely crushing it it was truly shocking because even though i wasn't sure what would come out i was hoping it would be decent and what it was met with was 12 to 15 years of practice of discipline a guy who had spent his entire life up to that point practicing to be the greatest drummer that he could be practicing to realize and pursue and get this dream that he had been working so hard for since he was 11. when you look at people in l.a you don't know what's underneath we work so hard on making us look a certain way we see the most beautiful the most spectacular people here in l.a but what's behind all of that skin what's underneath what are they carrying jake is the most beautiful human being and on the outside you wouldn't know that he spent his entire life working for this goal he spent every day practicing every day trying to be better by looking at him you wouldn't know the greatness that he holds within him and that's what i love there is more that meets the eye paul talks about this in second corinthians 4 7 through 12. he says if you only look at us you might well miss the brightness we carry this precious message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives that's to prevent anyone from confusing god's incomparable power with us as it is there's not much chance of that you know for yourself that we're not much to look at we've been surrounded and battered by troubles but we're not demoralized we're not sure what to do but we know that god knows what to do we've been spiritually terrorized but god hasn't left our side we've been thrown down but we haven't broken what they did to jesus they do to us trial and torture mockery and murder what jesus did among them he does in us he lives our lives are at constant risk for jesus's sake which makes jesus's life all the more evident in us while we're going through the worst you're getting in on the best see i love that paul tells us quite bluntly that we are not much to look at he says we carry this precious message around an unadorned clay pots and you might be thinking i am a fabulous clay pot i've got the best clay pot you've ever seen and when you live in a city like la you have the most bedazzled the most beautiful the most time spent on a clay pot that you could ever see you see the most beautiful talented people who spend hours and money and effort making themselves look beautiful but you never know what you're going to find on the inside have we become a society that cares way more about what our clay pot looks like than what the vessel carries i have the gift of being on a team with songwriters and creatives who write the music for mosaic and i will say that they are the most unassuming clay pods that you might ever see when i met them although they are beautiful human beings i never knew the greatness that lied inside of them if you've ever met andres figueroa he had never written a song before in his life before he came to mosaic and now he writes the greatest songs that we sing as a church ever and we all kind of hate him for that but we're grateful for him he is so unassuming he didn't even know that it lied within him you've ever met colin denard he is this little scrawny genius he creates the most beautiful sounds he is more than what you could even see on the outside there is more to you than you even know what paul is telling us is that we are nothing but ordinary in our physical being what makes us extraordinary is what lies within us even as i stand in front of you today i spent hours doing my hair i spent hours choosing my clothes i did my makeup i wanted to make sure i looked thin i wanted to make sure that you approved of what i looked like but what matters to god is not the adornment of the pot what matters to god is not that i look pretty or perfect or this or that right now what matters is the content of my soul what matters is that i have something today for you to hear because i've allowed god to pour into me what matters is what's inside the vessel not the vessel itself paul tells us what people see when they look at us and it's not super encouraging in fact it's pretty demoralizing to be honest with you he tells us that people um see us as surrounded battered by troubles not sure of what to do disoriented indecisive perplexed spiritually terrorized persecuted tried and tortured struck down mocked and murdered going through the worst looking like things are falling apart all around us outwardly wasting away this is what paul is telling us that people see and a lot of us might think i'm one of these things when you look at me i look like i'm falling apart when you look at me i look like i've been battered by troubles i've been beat down by the circumstances of my life but the problem with the way people see us is that sometimes we let what happens to us or what people say about us define who we are and even worse we let it define who we become we let what people say about us or see in us define our future i don't know about you but have you ever been underestimated because i have i remember pivotal moments in my life up until now where someone has told me that i couldn't do something i remember when i was probably 16 years old at church one of the first times that i led i had had a conversation with a successful musician at the time and he said that he wanted to give me some advice and so you know i'm on my i'm on my toes i want to hear what he has to say because this is what i want to do with my life i want to be a musician i want to write songs i want to be in pursuit of this of this goal of this dream and he tells me that the best thing i could tell you is that you cannot do it and you do not have what it takes because someone needs to be honest with you and while i appreciate what he thought was honesty a fire began in my spirit because by looking at me i might not have what it takes but he didn't know what was in my soul i had a conversation with a producer who wanted to invest in my career years later i told him the dreams that i had had for my career and for the type of music that i wanted to play i had all of these dreams for how i wanted to move forward i'd been writing songs for years and years at that point and i was ready to make the next step and he told me it cannot be done what you see for your future is impossible the kind of music you want to make it's not going to happen and i left that conversation demoralized beaten down all these things that paul's saying that's what i felt just another moment in my life where someone said it's just not going to happen for you i remember when i joined staff of mosaic i was part of the worship team as a volunteer and people that i thought were my friends at the time went behind my back and told the leaders of the church she can't do it she's too young she's too inexperienced it should be me not her and when i hear all of these things within my life all of these pivotal moments in my formative years my self-talk becomes they told me i can't do it so i won't do it they told me i can't do it so i won't do it has anyone ever told you that you're weak or incapable that you're not good enough you're not talented enough you're not strong enough you're not ready enough you're too young you're to this you're too that you're not enough of this you're not enough of that and did those words give you the excuse that you needed to live beneath your potential did those words give you the reason that you needed to give up did they give you the confirmation that you needed to jump ship stop living down to people's expectations stop letting people's view of you or words at you or expectations of you transform the future that god has for you see the scriptures they don't stop there there's more to what paul is saying but i want you to know that when you allow the wrong people to define you you let people empty you of what you should be carrying and you become an empty jar what paul says is more than just what people see it's more than just the brutal eyes and the beaten down the falling apart there's more to it he says there's a difference between the scene and the unseen the scriptures say that what people see might be one thing but it is not the end of the story this is the type of strength that we have in the scriptures it says we are battered by troubles but we are not demoralized anything could happen to you but it can't steal your joy and the hope that you have you are battered by troubles maybe right now you have endless number of circumstances you feel like hit after hit is coming at you you feel beaten down but you still have hope what a beautiful strength that we could have if we live a life like jesus you can be battered by troubles and we know jesus was we know things happened to jesus and he still had the hope of god within him he still had the faith to live another day to take another step to move forward to not let people's views and words about him define his future battered by troubles but not demoralized we could be unsure but we know that god knows what to do when we're unsure god is sure when we didn't know what if we left it in god's hands and kept moving sometimes we use overthinking as an excuse for laziness we use our ability to be unsure to be indecisive to not know what our future is and then we say okay well i'm not going to keep going because i'll just wait how many times have you said that i'll just wait i'll wait here because i'm unsure but what if we just believed that god is short and as we move god assureness god's beauty god's future for us became a reality god called you to move not know unsure but god is sure terrorized but not alone what if we let people say what they wanted to say but we know that god is in our corner we have god on our team it's okay if someone says you can't do it you're not enough you're not talented enough you're not good enough god is on my side and i can do all things terrorized but not alone you are never alone even if you're the only person who believes you can do it you have god on your side thrown down but not broken have you ever dropped a glass and it didn't break i dropped things all the time i'm the clumsiest person ever but have you ever dropped a glass and like braced for the fall for the crack for the shattering and then you look down and it's still intact that's what paul's saying that we are he's saying that we are unbreakable we are unbreakable i love the imagery that paul uses in clay pots because clay breaks we are precious but resilient seemingly breakable seemingly normal seemingly ordinary but there is an extraordinary inner working so the strength paul is talking about is strength of spirit strength of heart and strength of soul we are human we break we shatter we crack we hurt we bruise when your jar breaks what leaks when your life falls apart what is left does your confidence lie in other people what pours out of you the contents of your soul the contents of your jar reflect what you allow to pour into it are you being led by the spirit of god are you letting the scriptures pour into you are you letting people in your life more connected to god than you pour into your vessel pour into your spirit or are you letting the words of people who do not believe that you have greatness within you pour into you are you letting people who see less than what you are capable of for your future pour into you who are you letting pour into you what are you letting into your spirit what are you letting into your soul because what pours out of you reflects what you let pour into you when your plans change or your dreams are shattered when things feel impossible when you are broken this is the type of strength that lasts we are human we shatter we break we bruise we hurt but when your jar breaks what comes out when your life falls apart what do you have left there's three things that i want you to understand today what pours out of you reflects what you allow to be poured in in moments of pain does what others say define you does what others say begin to pour out do you start to believe the lies when you're cracked do you go back to that one time someone said you are not capable or do you believe that god has put a strength in you that is impossible to see with the human eye that is impossible to understand when i look at you there is a strength within you that you have to realize but you have to stop letting people define who you are what pours out of you reflects what you allow to be poured in two adorning the pot does not make the contents more valuable when you crack do you spend more time making the cracks look better rather than addressing the issue do you spend more time making your life look perfect do you spend more time on instagram do you spend more time pretending like everything is okay the more cracked you are the more effort you put in on the outside and the more neglected the inside is adorning the pot making yourself and your life your physical world look better does not make the contents of your life more valuable you have to be aware of the inner workings of your spirit of your soul when you spend all of your energy all of your time all of your money all of your effort making your life look a certain way you neglect what god is doing in your life because god cares more about the contents of the vessel than the vessel itself the third thing i want you to understand is that the cracks of your life are not your imperfections but the way that god releases what's in you as a gift to the world let your suffering be your superpower let the things that god has put in your life good or bad move you forward to helping other people let your journey be the story that puts god's power on display in my life this is still very much a process for me i've had to process through the nose and the you can't do it and that you're not this and you're not that you're not enough of this and you're not enough of that but i had to bet on myself and i had to believe what the scriptures tell me that there's more underneath the skin than i can even see there is an eternal being underneath what i can look at in the mirror there is more than what meets the eye i had to believe the people in my life who were speaking on behalf of god instead of the people who couldn't see what was underneath i had to believe my brother when he said that i could do it i had to believe my dad when he said that he believed in me that i am who god says i am that i am more more than what you can see on the outside that i have a supernatural power inside of me i had to believe because your life depends on it if you spend your life believing that you can't do it if you spend your life letting your future be defined by the people who said no or the people who said you weren't enough then you will spend your life being an empty pot see some things only fill our jar temporarily things like encouragement things like success or praise these things validate but they don't change us and we become addicted to temporary feelings we want more and more praise more and more affection more and more affirmation more and more success have you ever gotten something and realized that you weren't satisfied with that thing that you just wanted more we become addicted to temporary things and you have to come to this on your own i cannot force you to understand this you have to come to it on your own even the best things in this life even the best emotions or feelings even the best conversations or people that fill you up are temporary you have to come to this on your own even the best things in this life even the best words or the best affection even the best love the best things in this life fill you up are temporary and jesus is the permanent filling of the soul you have to come to this the only thing that will sustain you that will keep you full the only thing that makes the contents more valuable than the vessel is being filled with jesus himself you see when you are filled with the holy spirit when you are filled with the beauty and the hope the graciousness the patience the peace the kindness the love the beauty of jesus when you crack when you break when you shatter you leak jesus what you pour out is beauty what you pour out is kindness could you even imagine being broken being at your end being battered being all of these things that paul is talking about that paul is saying that we are that we look like could you imagine coming to the end of yourself and the only things that come out are good things you know i i um i love my dad and this is such a beautiful example of of my father because i've made my father mad a few times in my life but when he's mad what comes out is kindness what comes out is hope is love it's a different kind of love it's a different kind of hope it's a different kind of patience how could someone who is angry or who is broken who is hurt by me crack and pour out good things when we're filled with jesus when we're filled with the holy spirit we crack we pour out good we pour out love we pour out kindness jesus came into a jar of clay a god that could not break came into a broken vessel to tell others of their brokenness and to heal others of their brokenness and when they were breaking and beating his body on the cross what came out was love what we saw as a bloody man on a cross what we know as a man a physical human being being nailed to a cross being beaten and broken ridiculed mocked [Music] internally what was pouring out was love and what in return we have gained from that moment in history is forgiveness that moment of beating that moment of pain that moment of suffering has given us an eternity of forgiveness an eternity of hope an eternity of grace a god that could not be broken came into a breakable body and broke for us poured out the best things in life what comes out of us when we're battered and broken we're human but when you're filled with jesus you will pour out jesus and you can fill others up those around you that are empty those around you that have made their pots look more beautiful than the contents you can pour what you have into them so the scriptures go on in verse 16 through 18. it says so we're not giving up how could we even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us on the inside where god is making new life not a day goes by without his unfolding grace these hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times the lavish celebration prepared for us there's more here than that meets the eye the things we see now are here today gone tomorrow but the things we can't see now will last forever he poured out his grace his faithfulness we've been forgiven eternally and today maybe you need to be filled with something more permanent maybe you've spent too much time too much money too much effort too many of your days adorning the pot spending your time making sure your life looks a certain way making sure people know that you have this that you've got it all but inside you are carrying nothing inside you were empty but i'm here to tell you we have a beautiful god and he wants to fill you to the brim he wants your pot to overflow with jesus he wants your pot to overflow with the holy spirit so that in the coming days when you crack because you will because we're human paul tells us this is what we have in jesus we know that we will suffer we know that hard times will come we know we know we know it is coming if it's not already happened to you it's coming but i'm here to tell you that you can be so filled that when you crack you leak good things when you break you pour good things and jesus is the permanent filling of the soul so today if that's you and you want to be filled with the holy spirit you want to be filled with jesus for the first time you want your pot to no longer be empty you don't want to spend all your time on the outside but you actually want to start filling your soul with good with strong with faithful then i want you to pray these words with me jesus i give you my life it's really really simple but when we hand over this vessel of ours to jesus he begins to pour it pour himself into you for his life his love his grace his hope you become filled with joy you become filled with new things you become more focused on what you're carrying than what's carrying it all you have to say is jesus i give you my life and he'll begin to pour himself out jesus i give you my life just say it say it out loud stay in your car wherever you're watching this from jesus i give you my life and if you're praying that prayer today if you want your jar to be filled i want to pray with you jesus thank you for the ability that we have to access you over and over again thank you that you tell us that not a day goes by not a day goes by without your grace not a day goes by without your forgiveness not a day goes by without your love or your hope god i pray that right now for those of us that are coming to you and saying my pot is empty would you please fill it jesus please fill these empty pots with everything good that you are god i pray that we would become a people with jars overflowing that every time hardship comes our way we would pour out good things we thank you that you continuously pour out your goodness on each of us and i pray you would help us have strength that you would help us have courage that we would believe what you say when you tell us and there's more that there's more to us than what meets the eye that we would believe you when you say that we can and we will that we would believe you when you tell us we're capable and that we have more inside of us than we know we thank you that you believe in us endlessly and we give you our lives pour your life into us we ask these things in your name jesus amen
