and welcome back to our very last day of learning how human beings are studying how to become invisible day 5 week 23. uh at the end of this uh you'll see on teams there's going to be a link to two videos one of the videos is just on retro reflection which we're gonna learn about uh today and then the other one is top 10 other ways and one you'll find electromagnetic cloaking or meta materials on that list 10 ways humans are researching invisibility it's really kind of a cool video some of the stuff's a little far-fetched above your head and some of that some people actually said the guy was cheating because he used um no his this one guy you'll see his cloak it looks like it really looks work it works but he hasn't proven it anywhere else it looks kind of fishy but some of them they have some realistic things going for them okay you're gonna learn about here they are other ways of becoming invisible the way we did them we uh we talked about metamaterials they refer to it as electromagnetic cloaking that's what we talked about electromagnetic field and electromagnetic cloaking you're telling it to go somewhere else we're going to learn about optical camouflage today which is really kind of fun here are some other ways are you ready quantum stealth that's really cool spectral cloaking a carpet cloak the rochester cloak um which was actually made at the university of rochester one is called the invisible glass so those are different ways scientists for many years have been studying some of them are still in their infancy meaning it's still going to be you know many years before this is mainstreamed and mainstreamed means people are starting to use them but they have all sort of advantages of why we would want to make things to become invisible so without further ado we're going to finish together on 242 and ours is going to be optical camouflage another technology can create a kind of invisibility optical camouflage when you see the word camouflage you might think of the pattern uniforms that soldiers or hunters wear to blend in outdoors or the way chameleons change color to match their surroundings optical optical camouflage is not quite so simple so when you think of camouflage you think of you know the color just whatever shirt you're wearing it blends in with the background right that's a little different optical camouflage is going to use cameras optics it's going to kind of trick the viewers into seeing these things so here's the first thing you will need the first thing you will need for optical camouflage is a special item of clothing a cloak that is covered in very small beads these beads have been engineered to refract light in a precise way so the light bounces back in the same direction that it came from this process is called retro reflection retro reflection exists in everyday life for example bicycle reflectors are retro-reflective and can be seen by nighttime drivers signs big stop signs those are electro electrical retro reflective not electricity electro no those are retro reflective um if you have shoes that are running shoes mr van namey has a running jacket that i wear it's got retro reflective stripes down the side i got a couple of shorts also that have some retro reflective materials because if i'm running at night or if i'm running very early in the morning the cars the the light hits it perfectly and they can say like hey someone's kind of running you're supposed to wear those sort of things when you're out running out and about so retro reflection that's what we have there so they kind of work like a retro reflection but their process is also going to have to use something else the cloak is just the beginning they're saying so you got to have a very special fancy cloak that you wear which has made of completely retro reflective um material your cloak is just the beginning you will need some other equipment first set up a digital video camera so that it is at your back so imagine putting a camera behind my back here point it away from you record video footage of what is happening behind you so that's exactly what would happen it would be recording anything that's going behind me then you'll need a computer that will process the images that are being recorded you will also need a projector so again i have a projector in my class there's let me go zoom up there whoops there's my projector right so a projector like that so you need to have a projector that can display the images on your special rectal reflective coat so you're gonna have those images that are being recorded that are behind me and then they're gonna come from my projector and they're going to show up right on me all right you will also need a projector that can display the images on your special rectal reflective cloak the film must be must be projected through a very small hole that the images in the film match up with the size of your cloak so there's the problem think of your projector my projector is a big rectangle right squarish it's more of a rectangle it's long on the top and shorter on the sides there you would need one that perfectly fits to whatever i need so if i'm wearing this cloak that camera needs to be completely perfectly on me alright you will need one more thing of course a special mirror this mirror will reflect the film onto the cloak and will send the film images back to the viewer the mirror will also direct other surrounding light to the viewer the mirror is important for the final effect viewers should be able to see the environment what's going on behind me as well as the person who is wearing the cloak the final effect will be similar to what happens when you walk in front of a movie screen while a movie is being projected you take on the appearance of your background but the background will blend into the image on your co on your cloak and you won't cast a black shadow behind you with optical camouflage you won't be completely invisible but you won't be immediately noticeable either some invisibility is possible today but only through complex and expensive technologies like metamaterials and optical camouflage in the future this is why i like to teach this in the future there will likely be simpler more accessible ways to become fully invisible invisibility will no longer be a fantasy but a reality so i'm going to show you just a couple things here so you're going to look at these two things and be like okay mr b i've seen it before a computer a laptop wireless open it up and you know how that's used right i in your age at your age this wasn't around this wasn't around okay i had computers they were big honking things with my little mouse button there i had keyboards tower bigger monitors almost like a big tube like thing everything's right here look at how thin that is look at that boys and girls you can see my whole entire face almost there it is look at that look how thin that thing is okay so 20 30 years have gone by look at the invention look at that ah here's an obvious one right my cell phone my ability to communicate with anyone look up music you name it my video the cell phones were around when i was younger they were big massive things almost like earbuff size you'd have to put them over right big giant things you'd have in the car and they're only for people who had lots and lots of money like a car phone nowadays everybody got one right so don't sit there and go ah this thing of invisibility it's never gonna happen if you told me as a kid that i could go ahead and play little video games on a device like this with sound and you name it i would have told you you're nuts here it is 20 30 years so if you're gonna defeat and just think that's never gonna be a possibility then you're not going to be much of a scientist and i think a lot of you this is right up your alley and this is why i want to for the rest of my video give you guys the luxury have some fun with this you're going to pick either optical camouflage or the amount of materials and you're going to talk about how you could become invisible all right you're going to use that guide and remember that guide there is just three little things and you're gonna make sure you talk about the electromagnetic spectrum and how waves work and how energy how we see just that visible light and that was our first day and then you can talk about either metamaterials or you could talk about the optical camouflage okay and i only want like a two minute video doesn't have to be long if you want it to be a little longer that's fine but don't have it be too long because what we're gonna do if it's okay with you we're gonna share it with the class okay if it's not i still want to see your video so i want everyone to make a video but we won't share it with a class i'll just watch it so i want to see you guys just create like a little tiny lesson doesn't have to be much you're i know you're shy in front of the camera that's perfectly fine you yourself don't even have to be in it right you can kind of have your hands maybe pointing up to the board your face is off to the side like this not bad maybe try to talk and they say hi there all right don't be too shy um i know this is new to you but again making it fun teach us about invisibility okay so that is your job for today i'm ending this video in a couple of seconds here um but i wanted to go over that with you guys we've talked a lot about invisibility and it's kind of a cool thing who knows what the future brings when you guys come back to me i'm gonna teach you guys a lot of other things things that make your mind go what huh in the future really that okay the future's kind of weird when you think about it 30 40 years from now we're still alive my my 70s my 80s right i'm not going to be inventing things but you are though 20 30 years from now who's to say that you're not working with metamaterials and you're in a scientific lab helping people invent some sort of invisibility cloak that's going to save people's lives or help people for the better okay so i have also posted two other videos in microsoft teams where you guys have watched this link one of them is completely on retro reflection that one's about a 20 minute one i want you to watch at least the first three minutes because that's a good job and it shows you how road signs work road signs in the middle of the night work let's say that again we know how road signs work you look at them you read them road signs use a good amount of retro reflection okay if you want to watch the whole video you can i watch the first three to four minutes uh it's not too bad and then you have another one really kind of cool ten ways we are figuring out how to make things invisible really cool you're gonna hear the two ways that we did they call it electromagnetic cloaking though we talked about meta materials that's was the amount of materials remember that little ball that i had there that was day four so you have meta materials and then they have all bunch of other things cool video to watch it's really done done really well the only thing make sure sorry about the commercials the commercials are gonna happen so if you get a weird commercial like mystery i saw a commercial about this i apologize in advance i do like to show kids these technologies because it gets gets you interested uh let's be honest mr mandami teaches you all these things but someday you're gonna be an adult and you're gonna have to do something and maybe most of you maybe some of you gonna want to be an inventor a scientist you got these great crazy wild ideas imagine the person who invented a cell phone was told no that's not silly no one's gonna want to carry around a device to communicate and talk to people that's crazy right well guess what it's a real thing now and one of the biggest things that i can think of is facetime the invention of a video chat on your phone is insane i would watch movies in the 1980s and 1990 where that was like what what i could communicate with someone by then just talking to them no way yeah way we do it all the time it's called facetime right that wasn't around when i was your age okay all right guys have fun with it enjoy it uh love this science to little technology here and anything new be inventive maybe you someday will uh invent some meta materials or you will find ways to make humans and other things invisible bye
