david lee miss jen short miss suzanne spitzbergen [Applause] and mr patrick carradine [Applause] this is the first time that i've had you assembled in front of me since the beginning of your junior year this year i actually missed giving you the speech as we started this year usually i stay senioritis is a real disease make sure you don't catch it also make sure that you do what you need to do so when may comes around you're not asking me what do i need to do to graduate because you're sitting here without that speech you were successful to the class of 2021 or should i say the class of dedication or the class of overcomers or the class of resilience i thought the class of 2020 had it rough when they had a few short moments of virtual learning but your class has already proven to the world that you can get the job done with any obstacle that is thrown in front of you i never had i never intend to have a long speech because the day is not about me it's about you and most of you will probably forget what i'm saying as soon as i take my seat i just want to leave you with some encouragement and motivation before you go into the world but before i start i want each graduate to stand up and give a round of applause to your loved ones here and everybody that's watching through the stream please stand up and give your family a plan of applause you can have a seat now you have all worked hard to get to this point in your life but these people have been behind you throughout your journey and they will continue to be behind you as you go into the next chapters of your life after this ceremony will leave the john dixon school and go into various future endeavors some college military or the workforce but i have confidence that you will make a positive impact in whatever that you do you will have some failures and you will have some successes throughout this journey of life whatever you do make sure you learn from each of them recently i've been listening to a motivation speaker by the name of inky johnson if you follow me on twitter you see little snippets of some of the things that he says he has a very interesting backstory inky johnson was born in atlanta in a crime-ridden neighborhood he was one of 14 people that lived in a two-bedroom house growing up he would sleep on the floor he was allowed to sleep in the bed one day a week with four other siblings or family members him and his cousin that slept in the bed over numerous times started playing youth football and they made a deal to themselves that they were going to use this vehicle to make sure that they go to the next level so throughout middle school i'm not working our way to high school they did just that working late at night working extra hard so that they can make themselves better athletes as well as students when inky johnson got to high school mind you his high school sent more people to prison than they did to college when he first walked in the door the security guard said what are you going to do with yourself he said because you're real little inky johnson when he went to high school was about five five 125 soaking silken pounds wet he told him i'm going to get a scholarship and work to get my family in a better place the security guard said good luck with that i don't think you'll be successful fast forward to it his senior year by his senior year he earned a full scholarship to the university of tennessee for on for a football scholarship who do you think the first person he went back and talked to he went back to that security guard and said thank you for the motivation for doubting me when he went to college at the university of tennessee a reporter came up and said you're a real little guy this is sec football i think you'll probably play special teams for about three or four years and get a college degree he told that reporter he said i plan to start by his sophomore year he was a starter by his senior year he was a top prospect to be drafted in the first round of the nfl draft his senior year the second game of his season he went up to make a routine tackle it was his last tackle ever he broke his clavicle and it severed several nerves in his arm he had to have emergency surgery just to live he has no longer use of his arm or his hand and the reason that i'm talking about this young man is because instead of giving up now he goes around and encouraging people and he has one saying that i want to leave with you he used to sign the saying empty the bucket that means give everything that you have in everything that you do if you empty if you don't empty the bucket and you leave and you keep something in the bucket you'll always have regrets but if you empty the bucket and give everything that you have and it doesn't go in your favor you'll be able to walk away with your head held high because you did everything that you were capable of doing empty the bucket is what i want to leave you with make sure in the next phases of your life that you empty the bucket as you go out here they're going to be some sexes and some failures that's okay just remember once you go out there you can always come back as long as i'm here if you need anything that i can do i'll be willing to help you letters or recommendations if you got a degree and you want to be an educator come on back you'll get an interview and hopefully you're the best person and then you'll get a job the only thing that you cannot come back and ask me for is money because you will get a no i love you dearly but you will not get any money from me lastly parents i want to thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child's life for the past three years it has been truly an honor like i said i'm not long thank you god bless each and every one of you and remember grand pride at this time i would like to bring to the stage the superintendent of the red clay consolidated school district mr darrell greene good evening the john dickerson school class of 2021 let's give it our form on behalf of the red clay consolidated school district members of our school board district leadership staff our educators support staff to our graduates we say congratulations to our parents family members guests friends we say welcome as we all emerge from the haze that is known as covet 19 to celebrate this milestone in person we say thank you we thank you for your resilience the sacrifices you've made and your uncanny ability to adapt to the life circumstances complex life circumstances that have been thrown our way over the past year and in all honesty to our graduates you are the graduating class who demonstrated resilience during a global pandemic that's not to be taken lightly you are blessed to be here today we are blessed to be here to celebrate this event with you again congratulations class of 2021. as principal saunders said we're here to celebrate and recognize you so i will be briefing my remarks as well but i will leave you with three matters of fact or points of life that we hope you will take along with you in your next journey the first is that your lives are invaluable i'll repeat that your lives are invaluable they're priceless gifts that you should never take for granted you are deserving of every opportunity that will allow you to boldly and vibrantly live out your purpose give thanks each day even when you feel like you don't have enough be mindful to give thanks be open to all that remains possible in pursuit of both personal success and selfless significance the world is going to require more of you and based on your resilience this past year you've demonstrated that you can handle just about anything know that you're leaving here with a strong foundation a foundation that's aligned to the iv philosophies of academic rigor environmental stewardship intercultural understanding and the pursuit of positive relationships health and well-being class of 2021 you have a unique perspective that's different than your parents that's different than your grandparents that's different than us as educators so as you move on to college the military trade school the workforce or you're still seeking direction don't stray away from your friendships and the relationships that have gotten you to this point it'll be easy to get discouraged as you move forward understanding we all do just know that accountability rests in the choices and decisions you make when you face adversity not adversity itself therefore don't fall for the common traps that life will present making everything look easy because it's probably a filter a bot or an algorithm we are indeed a society that loves to celebrate and promote false narratives tracking success through wrong metrics so utilize your talents for a cause that is worthy of your brilliance a cause that has the potential of bettering the world and ultimately one that fills your soul starting with this moment i urge you to push forward against pessimism cynicism racism sexism tribalism and all the other isms that can dominate our culture i challenge you to seek a life that embodies all that is good all that is right and all that is possible don't chase likes followers or immerse yourself in the council culture use your disagreements and differences as a way to learn through meaningful discussion and debates that build new and meaningful relationships which will ultimately lead to meaningful positive change if we'd all commit to that the disenfranchised and disconnected would truly feel like they're part of the collective we are the people most importantly in life's journeys you're going to enter a world where individuals are going to make you feel like they have it all figured out when actual we all don't whether it's finances relationships family dynamics professional growth emotional well-being health we're all in process if we've learned anything over this past year it's that we need each other we all benefit from being there for one another asking for help doesn't make you weak it makes us real and if there's one thing we need it's real people to do life with so in conclusion whatever road you choose to travel seek justice grant mercy and walk humbly to the class of 2021 we celebrate you we salute you congratulations job well done and to our families thank you as well it is my pleasure to introduce the salutatorian of the class of 2021 the salutatorian of the class is a student with the second highest eligible cumulative weighted gpa this student's cumulative weighted gpa is 5.22 this student has received nothing but a's she's part of the all dickinson's all-nba every mark period except for one pesky b-plus in math first semester of her freshman year this student transcript shows 11 honors level courses 14 ib courses one ap course one dual enrollment course this student will leave dickinson and attend davidson university to study biology and spanish the salutatorian of the class of 2021 is ms sarah delwolf [Music] thank you mr saunders families friends guests and administ administrators and faculty especially my fellow graduates good evening my name is sarah dilworth and i have been a student here at the john dickenson school since seventh grade when the school first opened that's when i entered the ib program ordinarily i think most of us try not to look back in the past but today at this momentous occasion i think it's valid to do so with that being said please bear with me as i recall memories from our high school experience as a runner i think of high school as the mile run for those of you who are not distance runners the mile is four laps around the track which is roughly 1600 meters let's think of each of those laps as one year of high school the first lap our freshman year was a time when we were all trying to fit in trying to find our speed we were all trying to figure out who to stick with and how to keep up as high school went on the courses became more challenging just like each lap of the mile grows increasingly more difficult sophomore year we started to hit our stride we set our pace and set goals for ourselves our study habits were put to the test as we took the psats most of us experienced driver's ed and took that big first step towards adult responsibility as we got behind the wheel as a runner the third lap is when i start to pick up the pace i know that the end of the race is near and i think a lot about how i want to finish strong faster than when i started i think our junior year was similar we knew we were nearing the finish line the end of high school but we needed to sharpen our skills and make a plan for the future whether it be the sats college visits the asvab job internships or interviews and then the unthinkable happened the pandemic hit and school shut down we did not have a prom we did not have pep rallies instead we had to endure more than a year of technical difficulties and social distancing the finish line seemed very far away instead of coasting during this last lap we instead found ourselves running completely uphill we became online remote learners forced to work more independently than ever before we faced a lot of challenges like learning how to navigate zoom and staying awake during virtual classes we had to remember zoom passcodes and meeting ids even to remember to show up to class at all however we did develop new skills we learned to manage our time to communicate with our teachers and our peers whether it be in a chat or via email we had to be self-disciplined and focused luckily we had great teachers who kept pushing us reminding us to stay focused on our goals we have faced unprecedented challenges but we did it all together we made it through this our senior year after a race i often ask myself could i have gone faster did i push myself hard enough class of 2021 the mile run looks different for all of us because we have to run the race that's unique to us we have our own goals strengths and experiences the important thing is that we finished today we find ourselves gathered one last time at our finish line celebrating our graduation together from here we will go our separate ways some to college some to the armed forces some to a trade school and some straight into the workforce wherever we go we will hold the memories of the last four years close in our hearts we are thankful for all we've learned and even the difficulties we've faced we've had an amazing group of teachers coaches guidance counselors and administrators they have blessed us all with their wisdom and advice along the way and we will forever be grateful congratulations to the class of 2021 it is a significant event a milestone best of luck to all of you thank you thank you sarah the valedictorian of the class of 2021 is a student with the highest weighted eligible gpa in the class our valedictorian's cumulative weighted gpa is 5.253 every final grade on this student's transcript is an a in fact they have never received less than a in any course than their entire career this student's transcript shows 11 honors courses 14 ib courses 1 ap course and 1 dual enrollment course this student will leave dickinson and attend virginia tech to study engineering the valedictorian of the class of 201 2021 is miss abigail campion i want to start by welcoming everyone today and expressing my gratitude and happiness we were able to meet together in person as we fought through this year we were faced with an uncertainty of what graduation would be like yet here we are smaller in number than a typical year he had still gathered to celebrate the work we the class of 2021 have put in to make it as we gather today i'd like to ask this to reflect on our past and how far we have come as i stand here in front of this microphone preparing to give a speech i'm reminded of a time i had not thought it possible as far back as eighth grade i had started gunning for the position of valedictorian i knew if i pushed myself i could excel and even the most challenging classes grades were and are important to me so i knew if i worked hard i could earn the top spot however there was one major obstacle in my way public speaking it started eight years ago in fifth grade i had pushed the day off for as long as possible but it was my turn to walk down the hallway to the main office pick up the phone and read the pledge of allegiance to the school for morning announcements i stood up shaking and nervous i only made it as far as the corner of the classroom where i sat down and started sobbing i couldn't do it my fear had taken over today however i made it out of my chair i knew that if i had to give a speech i would my fear of public speaking or not and well i'd say today is going much better than that day in fifth grade this small victory i have reached today is not unlike those all of us have reached today we achieve one of our largest goals the culmination of 13 years of schooling we are graduating from elementary school until today all of us have have had goals and dreams we face challenges in our lives some bigger than others but all meaningful and important to us as everyone gathers today we find ourselves in a room of success we all made it we find ourselves a class of young adults who faced one of unimaginable challenges like learning during a pandemic yet here we are among us our friends and peers going off to top universities trade schools serving our country in different branches of the military and going into the workforce each and every one of us has achieved something today each little bump in the road and every full-blown mountain we have climbed has led us to this moment here i ask that everyone here reflect back to elementary school families and teachers that includes you the world back then was still unfamiliar and new driving cars getting a job those things seem like things that only old people did back then even something as small as saying the pledge of allegiance was daunting and cause for nerves but today as we all look onto our lives we can see the goals we have reached and are setting for tomorrow and we can see how far we have come all of the ways we have grown and all of the places we have found ourselves in have worked to prepare us for our futures we have faced challenges with athletics and academics we have made friends and lost them while navigating the rocky terrain of high school through each rough patch we have persevered we have gained many skills like how to problem solve how to approach and engage in challenging situations and arguments in thoughtful manners how to think for ourselves and how to persevere even when faced with what seems like a cliff pointed straight up in our time here at dickinson and before we have made lifelong connections with friends found mentors for life and teachers and created a place that we can always call home thank you to all of my peers for becoming a family to me and pushing me thank you to my parents for creating a foundation for me to succeed thank you to my teachers for not letting me slack off and turn it and forcing me to turn in my highest quality of work and thank you to the friends and family gathered here today in support of this class as we close one chapter of our lives and move on to the next as we go forth from today i wish everyone good luck i look forward to meeting again and seeing where life has taken us all this class has become a true family to me and i know that everyone here today will find themselves in a place of success in the future we made it through one of the most challenging high school years ever seen so the real world can't be that much more difficult right thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] abby i also too hate public speaking i just fake it real well up here a member of the international back lawyer program our next speaker is academic leader and class officer do not let her small size fool you she is witty and spirited to present the the gift of the class of 201 2021 senior class vice president miss tricia borgia good evening teachers administrators family guests and fellow graduates i would like to congratulate the class of 2021 for making it through a global pandemic empowering through a very stressful time i'm honored to stand before you today on behalf of our class to present a special gift to the john dickinson school the student council went back and forth on what we wanted to leave dickinson in memory of our year and we thought it best that we left our mark by starting a new tradition for all future seniors we decided to leave behind a rock yes you heard me correctly a very large rock each senior year the class will collectively decorate the boulder to to commemorate the end of their high school career we hope to inspire future generations to leave their mark upon the school that we consider home we would like to thank our fellow graduates officers and senior class advisor mrs williamson for their support that's it [Applause] it is my pleasure to introduce the president of the class of 2021. this student is not only a leader of the class assembled here she is the voice of our morning announcements immensely talented the student sings plays several instruments and does them all well smart gifted kind she's an ib student planning to study pop and commercial music at loyola in new orleans i'm coming to visit to give the farewell address please welcome the president of class of 2021 miss cason cottrell welcome dickinson seniors parents siblings staff and loved ones it's been a crazy year to be quite honest it hasn't even fully hit me yet that i'm standing up here about to say goodbye to you all forever so if you see my eyes go wide like a deer in the headlights then it probably finally hit me i've been dreaming of giving this speech since i was in the eighth grade and i can't believe i actually get the privilege of doing it today it's been a long year but i don't have to tell any of you that and to be quite honest i don't want to give a big long speech about how hard it's been surviving covid we all know that i want to focus on the good stuff and the fact that we all made it out on the other side but before i get into some fun little stories i do want to get serious for a second and give a big thank you to our teachers and administrators for getting us through this year i know [Applause] i know it hasn't been easy on the other side of zoom without anyone ever responding to your questions you all were so patient with us and we greatly appreciate it in case you didn't know i choice into dickinson i live all the way in newark so lots of people ask me why i drive so far for school there's a very clear answer the people teachers administrators staff members every single person at dickinson cares about us so deeply and that makes a world of difference so thank you for pushing us loving us checking on us and genuinely caring about every single one of us during this extra challenging year now on to some fun stuff i've been at dickinson for six years that's a long time and a lot of shenanigans and fun stories i remember our freshman spirit week that terrifying feeling of walking into the gym for my very first pep rally i felt like a tiny little minnow in a sea full of big fish and i thought that i would disappear in that sea that day but i didn't all of us freshmen became a part of something bigger screaming at the top of our lungs as our classmates competed in all the different events we listened to our friends sing and play in concert and watched as they performed clue to a standing ovation you can think of all the games that we got to attend friday night under the lights at the football games tuesday nights screaming as we watched our boys basketball team make it to the tournament sweating in the pool area as we watched our peers swim their fastest races we were all there watching from the stands or competing in the races and we were there to support each other until the pandemic hit fast forward to our junior year we had our last real home coming together when our class turned a chunk of the hallway blue with our carnival decorations there were so many late nights spent at the school setting up those decorations and even though we didn't win it was a lot of fun and even when the pandemic shut down school we were still there showing our ram pride we may have had to wear masks to compete or practice in a bubble or cheer on our friends via live stream but we were there and recently the fun that we had at our senior send-off making the best of the situation at hand i couldn't ride the mechanical bowl because my dress was too long but it was very fun to watch everyone hanging on for dear life or even dancing to the cupid shuffle in the middle of mccain's football field no matter what our class has always been so full of spirit and energy and even though kovid stole so much from us i will never forget all the fun we managed to have before and after the pandemic struck fun stories aside i want to say something to my fellow classmates before i wrap this all up you made it no matter the struggles of this year you did it now you can start the next chapter of your life and turn the page on this insane year that we've had whether you're off to college trade school the armed forces or straight into the workforce i know that you all are going to do great things no amazing things you have so much more strength than you know because you were able to make it through a global pandemic and still manage to graduate that's no easy feat and i'm so proud of each and every one of us for being able to walk across this stage today it's a big deal the steps across the stage may seem like scary ones because real life begins now but you all are ready i know you are now comes the really hard part actually saying goodbye dickinson became so much more than just my school it became my family my ramily pun intended i want more than anything to leave the school making every single one of you proud you all played such an important role in shaping who i am right now even if it seems small at the time and i wish i could say a personal thank you to each and every one of you but we do not have anywhere near that kind of time being a singer-songwriter has always been my dream but it's scary to put yourself and your music out there the only reason i got brave enough to do that was because of all the encouragement that i received from people at dickinson this school is a magical place where you will be supported and surrounded by people who want you to succeed and be happy whether it was mr paradise letting me write a song for one of his assignments freshman year or mr hall letting me use his keyboard to write music during his class my sophomore year there was moment after moment of endless love and support that's why i love dickinson and that's why today is bittersweet we're all moving on to do amazing things in this next chapter and i'm so excited so let's make everybody proud and walk across this stage and on to the rest of our lives mr green members of the board of education having duly certified that the members of the john dixon school class of 2021 harris symbol have
