hey guys we're Evan and Katelyn and today we're gonna be eating potatoes we're not gonna be eating these potatoes we're gonna be using them for science sort of science we're gonna be using them to make master molds for our concrete and resin so why potatoes we normally do 3d prints when we're making molds but 3d prints take a lot of time and a lot of work to get it right formal making so... so we're gonna use a potato the humble potato so potatoes are gonna be great because we're using a vacuum former which this goes over the form of anything it could be 3d print it could be... a... potato we should be able to carve the shape we ultimately want vacuum form over it pour our concrete and resin into it and I think it's gonna look really cool and not like it came from a potato I'm gonna try to make it look like a gem I can't this is the bottom you can't really undercut it too much notice slightly at all verticals bad verticals bad well vertical is okay you should always be like from the top down you should be going out so this is already ruined is what you're saying cuz this this isn't going did you slice it like potato surgery is it art yet it's all right so Katelyn went a little bit ambitious because taller than it is wide yeah I'm gonna make something a little less ambitious okay so we're starting with Evans because apparently his is more likely to work than mine but first we have to put in the our raw material place this here lift into place and this year potato and then we just gotta wait for this to melt ready yeah you got too hot I think you see those little ridges right there yeah there's too much material it didn't like pull tighten up too much belly oh that's perfect potato gem yes work it yes yes my little fierce tot hot potato that's just what I wanted it totally looks like a gem it takes a little bit of practice to get like the exact droopiness like height of thing you're going around I don't know words but these are recyclable so I don't feel too bad lower tray hold down the top you gotta get up bang oh no lift it up all right you might need more sag than me well we'll see yeah yeah and you don't have time you can go down gentle it's okay noises of you grunting in the background but we do want to thank quikrete for sponsoring this episode we have been wanting this countertop mix for so long today oh gosh oh no we should put on a mask today every day concrete is a great material to experience to experiment with because it's really cheap meelk. it's a meelkshake po tato oh yeah there it is all righty you ready to do some resin oh yeah oh we gotta get things going it's like literally go time okay I need to pick some colors I had really thought about this almost are mixing resins I'm gonna do like a ruby how many uh we should man we should have thought about a lot of things I'm just gonna do clear and then I'm gonna do some alcohol inks oh you crazy so give me like three colors surprise me something bold can I get like a light color like I do so I'm gonna do three things with my three gems one I am just gonna do resin and I'm gonna layer it on another one I'm gonna do resin and then right on top of it immediately without waiting I'm gonna do concrete on another one if I'm going to mix them merge them and smash them and it's like I like fuse a little bit of resin a little splish-splash of color bing-bang one red right there that's it simple bang bingo-bango this one's gonna be blue white bingo that's really cool watch this all the sinks cool cool again that's crazy now on this one I'm I'm going to start with concrete and then whoa oh yes yes yeah oh my gosh and now oh my gosh whoa whoa whoa I don't know what I'm doing oh my gosh yeah they're like like veining down into the concrete this looks so freaking cool okay we gotta go I still have to to mine all right we're going I'm gonna start mixing my colors I'm gonna give you this camera I'm gonna take off primary gloves to reveal secondary gloves you're such a cool person I don't really know what I'm doing it actually start from mixing in some pigment and I'm already covered in no no I need it like a fourth color and I'm panicking I want it really pigmented at the top this little guy is gonna get cookies and cream kinda want the resin to stay on top that one I'm stopping now now you just got your big boy big BOY I do want to try a mixed look but with the pigment because yours was mixed and only alcohol ink I think that the concrete should act as a little bit of a heat sink absorbed oh this is wicked cool look at that it looks like blood huh really good helping your case just kinda looks like a fleshy color maybe if I add some blues blues blues blues oh whoa oh gosh It's not helping now it's just all brown and black ahahaha this is my big one! don't make me regret you you're just flinging concrete everywhere I'm panicking! I kinda just have to like keep going I don't know what else to do this is still an experiment this is take one we'd like to have potatoes yeah we can make more we have the technology we have the potatoes don't look at the bottom this is the most ho t mess creation I have ever made hey you know what it might transform overnight let's set this down gently let's drop it oh my gosh not worth it okay okay I think this is end of stage one well let this cure a lot of things learned we learned a lot of things I think we're done for now yeah we'll see how this turns out in the morning oh boy who do I get to go first since you have the camera here's the question can you save the mold hmm very helpful people in the comments saying "you guys should use mold release" say a word for this mold goodbye mold you worked I guess that's one benefit to these plastic molds though you know they're not as precious as the silicone it's coming slow oh my god the surface finish whoa so on this side it's super smooth all the way up but right here when I was ripping it off I ripped off a thin layer of epoxy and it exposed a rougher the straight concrete you feel that it's super smooth just in case heating it up helps Oh maybe puts a sad music on the same cuz I feel like that's gonna happen to all of these the Big Kahuna your beautiful fleshy creation don't call it that ok I have a theory I think we're gonna have to do things this way where we pour a layer let it fully cure before we pour the next thing whether that's another resin or another concrete and that will be cool it will be cool but I happen to give it up I will beat my head against all and I want to figure something out I feel like there's like some way to mix them and merge them maybe we wait until the epoxy is partially cured before we mix in the concrete and then that way it's thicker there's ideas in here that are happening okay this is very important time to mix things up their gold alcohol ink I'm gonna see what happens if I pour a little bit of extra on top I'm going tone-on-tone I think I've four distinct as I can for you my gosh so jeez I really wanted to see this alright so end of day two yeah I thought your continuing oh I'm just pretty excited I cannot wait till the reveal tomorrow I've been trying to behave and not peek no you have not tomorrow's we'll find out how they all look yeah camera it's the next day and we're about to open up these second molds hopefully we won't need these oh my god see the mold release were cool where you can see the concrete through the resins so this is one where they poured the concrete into the resin and kind of sunk in because the resin was only half set this one is the exact opposite where everything fully cured oh that's kind of cool oh this one doesn't have mold release what the heck Oh see this one comes out more usually it's a bad time not enough mold release or something we just noticed something just from the same mold look at that look at the tops this one melted it melted the plastic this is never coming off what those are happen let me recreate this for you I hope that yours work looks good that looks really good look at that alright guys I'm looking through my three remaining ones this guy I can tell he melted the plastic this one I think you can get it on the coolest one - there's a lot of cool things going on I mean it's a little bit I think we need to do am lessons learned using it sit down and drop some of our hard-earned knowledge can you grab me a towel yeah I touched something something sticky alright guys so lessons learned potatoes make good molds it's a rule one if you're gonna do resin and concrete mixing do resin first let it start to harden and then once it's hardening then do the concrete fully intermix with the resin because when that happened we got these really thin sheets of resin on the outside of the concrete rule number two I would say is when you're pouring the resin don't get too ambitious with the pour see how thick this was that melted the plastic no no this is good come in here with a caveat we got two different materials that we can use with the vacuum forming one was a lower temperature material which was clear and I thought that'd be really cool yeah this is higher temperature it's like thicker and sturdier well that cuz I wanted to be clear I wanted to see it while we went and made sense in my mind but if you're gonna do thick resin pores resin has an exothermic reaction which generates a lot of heat we saw it melting deforming try to use something that can withstand higher temperatures are just poor thinner layers or does poor thinner layers lesson three mold release it does help I think good does help a little bit are those all the lessons are you guys learned up we also have a bunch of general resin lessons on another video we'll link to that cover is like the materials that we use pigments the alcoholic inks in general I really like the white concrete though I'm really excited to do some white concrete projects which one is your favorite this was my favorite just because of that like clear crazy thing going on there my favorite is my least favorite on that long tone yeah it's very subtle some of these look a little crazy i might not put them up on a shelf to be honest with you guys these didn't turn out exactly as we envisioned in our heads but we're still happy with how they turned out we still ended up with cool things but I think the most valuable end result of this video and of this project is the knowledge we gained on vacuum forming and resins and concrete you know everything individually worked perfectly but you know we're still learning how to mix and match things together so thank you for being patient with us as we go on these little adventures and we're excited to roll the knowledge that we gained in this project into future projects I like bananas and I like pasta to maybe put bananas on my pasta dough mix red in with white red red in I know using resin I rock and roll all day long sweet Susie
