So that's why the shift supervisor wants everybody within their line of sight unless on a call
That is one old ass defib, honestly looks pretty cool though
I can definitely taste a difference after a code compared to a doa
Whoโs about to get an SOP named after them?
There was a long running CBC variety show called Vinyl Cafe that included storytelling about Dave and his humorous misadventures, think Prairie Home Companion but in Canada. Most people here would be amused by the story about the neighborhood defibrillator and the beef roasts.
Makes me think of a story I was told in Paramedic school. The college had some old defibrillators for their little EMS museum. A year or two before my class came along, a couple of idiots wanted to see if โOld Sparkyโ really did still work like our instructor said it did. One student shocked another one. Yes, โOld Sparkyโ still worked. The students were cut from the program for being idiots. Same class, more students were cut for trying IVโs in boob veins. Lol.
Defibrillated our thanksgiving turkey (a long time ago) at... 500J (ancient monitor even at the time).
Turns out electricity arcs when you cut out the middle of the bird for dinner.
Smoke and everything. It was fun.
Didnโt save the patient though. Typical code.
Kinda want to try this...
Technically the station is not my home....
I was surprised that he thought the steak would jump, but I guess thatโs why heโs the โBackyard Scientistโ and not just a scientist. A person jumps when you defibrillate them because their muscles all depolarize at once. As time passes after something dies, the ions diffuse throughout the tissues and the concentration gradients that were actively maintained in the living cell are no longer there. Not to mention that the enzymes that catalyze the activity of the sodium potassium pump, as well as others, are likely not functional at less-than-body temperatures.
