Was Kaiba About To Beat Yugi? [Dark Side Of Dimensions]

did you know there is a little bit of confusion surrounding the final duel in the dark side dimensions yugioh movie and i thought for today how about we clear that up for contexts this is what i'm talking about are you ready i'm always ready as you can see as yugi attacks for seemingly game the door is interrupted at the last possible moment kaiba's life points never technically dropped to zero and at first glance if things would have played out as they were then yugi without the pharaoh by his side would have beat kyber right well there are two tiny things that are present which perhaps if the door would have continued to play out it might have affected the outcome of the duel and these two things are kyber's face down card and the cheeky smile he does as yugi attacks both of these factors are left ambiguous to the viewer and it has led many people to speculate that qyburp might have had one final trick up his sleeve and that smile was actually confirmation that he was in fact a better duelist than little yugi and only the pharaoh was the one who could match him in strength but then again perhaps it meant something else i feel like this is worth a discussion but to start it going this far back yugi and kaiba had a total of six on-screen duels throughout the anime and while dark side dimensions is a continuation of the manga and not the anime the two mediums share almost identical win-loss records so for the sake of simplicity i'm just gonna focus on the anime for this video however here is something very important that is a crucial difference between the anime and the manga in the manga seto kaiba was not present for the final duel between the pharaoh and yugi why is this important well it denies kyber closure he never sees that yugi was able to beat a tem so in his mind is he really the greatest doorless if he didn't see him do it himself and it meant that kaiba was never actually able to say goodbye in his own kyber way which most likely would have been a duel a goodbye duel if you will so the first thing we want to look at is the dual record between setokaiba and yugimoto what was their win-loss ratios against each other who was technically the better daughters throughout the series well out of their six stools their first duel was in episode one the heart of the cards yami yugi was able to beat kaiba with exodia duel 2 was in episode 22 face off kyber beats yummy yugi with blue eyes because of blackmail as he threatened to throw himself from the castle walls if he lost he did this because if he had lost he wouldn't have been able to save mokaba which he didn't do anyway and due to this yugi effectively surrenders and makes this not a real win in anyone's eyes duel 3 episode 122 back to battle city this was a battle royale with yugi kyber joey and marek all dueling each other for the final pairings in the tournament in the end joey and marek would lose and kyber and yugi would go on to win so this could technically be classed as a draw between the two duel 4 was in episode 129 clash in the colosseum this duel ends with yami yugi winning with his dark paladin and diffusion wave motion combo and it is effectively their final duel in the main series outside of the main series though we have two movie doors duel 5 is in the pyramid of lights unfortunately though this door was interrupted as anubis hijacks the duel so this is classed as a dnf no results and of course we have today's video dual 6 the dark side of dimensions duel yugi moto pharolus versus seto kaiba with two solid wins one kind of draw one dnf and one technically not really a loss it is definitive to say yugi and atem together were better than seto kaiba throughout the entirety of the yu-gi-oh series however was yugi on his own better than kaiba based on the events of what happened in this film kaiba doesn't really seem to want to do yugi once again it's down to you and me just like old times no you aren't the one that i want to duel i want the pharaoh he seems to have very little faith in yugi's duelling abilities but was he wrong let's take a look at the duel both duelists start with 8 000 life points which as you can quickly throw out there how awesome is that a yu-gi-oh door with 8 000 life points i never thought i'd see the day yuki starts with five cards and then draws one to initiate the duel his opening hand most likely consists of a marsh macaran dark horizon metamorph fortress and a dark magician girl then probably something else it's a bit vague yugi summons macaron and sets two face downs kaiba starts his turn and his hand we can be a little bit more accurate with as it most likely consists of assault wyvern blue eyes white dragon dragon's fighting spirit high speed aria and blue eyes chaos max dragon he summons assault wyvern and attacks yugi special summons two more macarons from his deck kyber then special summons his blue eyes white dragon from his hand and activates dragon's fighting spirit to attack three times yuki plays dark horizon to special summon dart magician from his deck kaiba sets a card this is important keep that set card in mind yugi's turn he sets a card and ends kaiba attacks and yugi plays metamorph fortress equipping his dark magician to it a replay occurs since there was a change in monsters and kyber calls up the attack metamorph fortress then attacks blue eyes kyber takes 500 damage now this is a crucial moment as well kyber draws and we actually get to see his hand it consists of four cards polymerization chaos form blue eyes white dragon and blue eyes chaos max dragon he uses chaos form to summon chaos max for free since he has a blue eyes in the grave this is the anime effect of chaos form keep that in mind he attacks fortress dealing 1k damage and it's not the end yet yugi summons apple magician girl sets the trap magician's defense and ends his turn you fight me with fruit don't mock me he then attacks but yugi summons lemon from his hand and then dark magician girl from his hand chaos max is destroyed and kaiba takes 1 000 life points of damage after his monster's destruction he summons deep eyes white dragon from his hands yugi activates his trap magician's defense note the visible sweat kaiba displays when he doesn't win that turn and also just as important he sets a card face down keep that one in mind as well yuki gives kaiba his monster reborn through the effect of his magical contract door which allows him to add gandura x from his deck there's some symbolism here that's probably worth noting as well yugi's giving monster reborn to settle kaiba we'll discuss this a little bit more later but it's iconic yugi summons gandura x and destroys deep eyes which then destroys gandura kaiba now has 2 500 life points yugi has only 600. we get a dramatic puzzle scenes a bit of kyber denial and then we get this kaiba plays the trap high speed aria which keep in mind it is still currently yugi's main phase 1. he sends one normal spell card from his hand to the grave so that his traps effect becomes that spell card's effect he sends yugi's monster reborn and targets deep eyes this is crucial as by doing this he can inflict the damage to yugi through deep eyes effect winning kaiba the duel however yugi chain's final gias banishing the entirety of the graveyard except for dark magician which he summons to the field yugi then enters his battle phase and attacks successfully for game and as the life points dwindle down to zero the duel is interrupted by igame so with the stage set we have two key things we need to find out one kaiba set a face down what was it and could it have saved it two that smile what did it mean well let's start with a big one what was that face down well eagle-eyed viewers might actually know what the face down was if they've been keeping track of the duel log do you see the last time we saw kaiba's hand was right before he summoned chaos max dragon so let's follow the events of the handling shall we he's shown with four cards polymerization chaos form blue eyes white dragon and chaos max dragon he activates chaos form and summons chaos max with no tributes next turn he draws deep eyes which he summons during the same tone so now his hand consists of only a blue eyes white dragon and a polymerization he then sets a card polymerization most likely as a bluff as he has another face down card yuki then gives kyber monster reborn finally he discards monster reborn when he uses arya and after his summon of deep eyes is negated through yugi's final gears this means kyber is left with nothing but a polymerization and a single blue eyes in hand or as we say in this business a brickhand it seems as if kaiba's original plan was to use high-speed aria with polymerization much earlier on the duel because he had one blue eyes back then and a little bit later he did draw a second one but at no point did he ever have a blue eyes on the field and in his hand or just two in his hand at any point he could have summoned his blue eyes twin burst dragon but unfortunately that opportunity never came so instead he used it with monster reborn so we've established what the face down was but then what did that smile mean if it didn't mean that he had a final play left well this is just my personal interpretation but to me it's kaiba's acknowledgment that yugi really is the king of games and definitively the greatest aulist of their generation with that smile kyber humbly accepted defeat without a single word against yugi he stands proudly unflinching at the fact that they both duel to the best of their abilities and the better duelist one no shenanigans no denial just an epic duel between two of the most powerful duelists in the entire yugioh series in fact following this kaiba even willingly sacrifices himself so yugi could continue the duel against igame as he knew he was the stronger of the two and well of course because why did you do that for him the pharaoh and honestly with all that said i feel like we've covered everything well except for one thing we know now that kyber didn't have a play left however did that really have to be the case because i think he might have misplayed you lie you see there was an option available for him to survive one more turn and all he had to do was wait to activate high speed area you see he didn't need to rush the summon of his deep eyes and if he had waited he would have been able to chain his trap to yugi's final geass allowing him to summon perhaps instead of deep eyes as it would have had zero attack and wouldn't have been out to do any damage maybe he could have summoned that of a blue eyes that was in his grave with that on the field depending on if yugi had any further plays kyber could have at least survived for that turn and then at the start of his turn depending on whatever card he drew potentially could have resulted in a win keep in mind however that he would have been unable to use his polymerization because remember he still had a poly on the field so he would have had one blue eyes on the field one blue eyes in the hand and polymerization set face down in the field however his high speed aria made it so that he couldn't activate a spell card during his next turn so his twin burst dragon would have been unavailable for him to use and while it's always to be a captain hindsight and just speculate on what could have happened after it's already happened this isn't what happened and it's not what would have happened either because yugi knows kaiba he knew that if he gave kyber monster reborn he would want to end the duel quickly and as yugi planned kyber went for what he thought was a surefire win summoning deep eyes to inflict effect damage for game all before yugi can declare an attack you might have noticed that when kaiba received the monster reborn off of yugi he seemed quite angry by it and this can be interpreted in a few different ways because monster reborn is quite reflective of the pharaoh himself so yugi giving monster reborn to seto kyber is also saying that he's not going to bring back the pharaoh if you want to look that deep into it anyway however on a more superfluous level kaiba simply believes yugi has made a foolish move and has sealed his own fate by giving him such a powerful card however in reality this is what yugi planned for he read his opponent in the same way he was able to defeat the pharaoh he knew atem would use monster reborn to defeat him back then and this same method is how yugi spiritually defeated kaiba in the exact same way definitively proving that yugi is the king of games and well that's it some of you might disagree with some of the things i've said
