the horrors of the crm's echelon briefing have finally been revealed Rick Grimes has returned home all these years later and we think The Walking Dead original series could be getting a 12th season with Rick Grimes back in the lead welcome back to screen Crush I'm Colton Ogburn and these are all the Easter eggs references and the little things you might have missed in The Walking Dead the ones who live finale in the opening of this episode we can hear lines from earlier in the season echoing the story so far you tried to escape four times why are you here here we can see Rick raising his hand and surrender like we saw in The Walking Dead series finale and like we saw Michonne do in episode two of the ones who live right before the intro rolls we hear Rick say he said I didn't need to be scared echoing the theme of this episode and Rick's father's lesson about burning something down to make it a new the CRM seeks to burn down most of humanity in order for it to flourish while Rick seeks to burn down the CRM in order for it to flourish when Michonne arrives at jad' room to retrieve her left behind dossier on Alexandri we see a room filled with jad' art miroring all of her art we saw at the trash camp in the original series and the first person I spotted amongst these portraits was father Gabriel who we saw in last week's episode and speaking of art I wanted to let you know that we've got this great new the walking Doug shirt up on our merch store screencrush merch.com featuring Doug walking Ryan as a zombie inspired of course by Michonne's iconic chained Walker technique from the original series shopping our merch store is one of the best ways to support the channel and and we thank you very much for that support here Beal says we're the dead ones Rick this Echoes Rick's speech from season 5 of the original series when he says the classic line from the comics We Are The Walking Dead that we are The Walking Dead we've talked before in our breakdowns of this season about how the meaning behind Rick's speech was that they as survivors of the end of the world are supposed to be dead and that their sole Mission should be to do whatever they have to do to stay alive but Michonne challenged this rhetoric by insisting that surviving wasn't enough they were meant to live they were meant to build a life for one another instead of just being out here instead of just making it Michonne's sentiment about them not being The Walking Dead is what we feel inspired the title of this series the ones who live and fact in the finale of the original series we hear Rick Michonne and all the other surviving characters say we are the ones who live we're the ones who live we're the ones who live we're the ones who live a direct contrast to Rick's we are the Walking Dead here Beal is showing to Rick that he still holds a mentality of being The Walking Dead and willing to do horrible things to assure his own Survival even if it means Mass genocide while Rick on the other hand has grown Beyond The Walking Dead mentality so having Bill use a line echoing Rick from like season five when he was at one of his lowest points that was a way to draw a STK contrast between these two characters bill says the sword that kills is the sword that gives life earlier this season we saw Bill give Rick a book called martial arts and the Book of family traditions by Yago minori we mentioned at the time how in this book Yago discusses the lifegiving sword a justification for killing people quote it may happen that a myriad of people suffer because of the evil one in such a case a myriad of people are saved by killing one man would this not be a true example of the sword that kills is the sword that gives life and now we hear Beal quoting this book directly and echoing its themes of killing for the greater good which is the crm's plan and justification for annihilating entire community so that the Civic Republic and I guess in his eyes all of humanity May Prosper now you guys may have noticed that we're releasing these breakdowns before the episode airs on AMC and that's because episodes of the ones who live drop early on AMC plus they're the sponsor of this video AMC plus is home to the Walking Dead Library so you can catch up with characters like Maggie Negan and Daryl Dixon it's also home to one of my favorite shows Madmen not to mention a huge selection of movies BBC America IFC unlimited and the horror platform shutter which is essential for horror fans they even have exclusive extras like the better call saw employee training Series so be sure to check out our Link in the description below for a free trial of AMC plus terms and conditions appli back in Jess's room we can see a painting of Beal and more paintings of Father Gabriel including one where he's wearing his signature hat from the original series and we can also see another painting of Beal this shows us the conflict that was living inside of Jadis and how she was being torn between her Jadis Persona and her Anne Persona she was being torn by her allegiance to the CRM as well as her love for those back home in Alexandria when Michonne finds the briefing on Alexandria we see the following Jadis mentions in her letter her deal with Rick regarding keeping Alexandria a secret we also see mention of her trading of the injured Rick Grimes a reference back to Rick's injuries from his final episode when Jadis found him on the riverbed this mention of a hostile community in the area is likely a reference to Negan and the saviors Jadis and her scavenger group played both sides of this war during season 8 of The Walking Dead here we see written Rick LED his own Alliance of communities this is in reference to the Coalition between Alexandria Hilltop the kingdom and Oceanside we also see in this letter Alexandria referred to as the Alexandria safe Zone just like in the comics and just like this sign in the original series back with Rick and Bal we hear Bill ask what's the worst thing you did to make sure someone else survived we then get flashback from the original series showing key moments Rick had to kill people to protect his own we see Rick killing Shane in season 2 episode 12 better Angels Shane of course was Rick's best friend but proved himself to be a threat he tried to kill Rick and take his wife and son as his own putting Rick in a situation where he had no choice but to kill him Rick killing Shane was a moment in the original series that finally pushed Rick over the line he didn't want to cross All Season Shane had been pushing and pushing Rick implying that Rick wasn't strong enough to make the hard decisions and be the bad guy it was that night in season 2 episode 12 that Rick Grimes transformed into a Survivor and a wartime Rick Grimes a mindset that he wasn't brought out of until Michonne arrived and pulled him out of that darkness in the second half of season 3 now speaking of season 3 next we get a flashback of Rick killing Tomas in season 3 episode 2 sick we see Rick and the others encounter prisoners who had been held up in the prison since the outbreak and their leader toas like Shane put Rick in a position where he had no choice but to kill him in order to keep his people safe theas had taunted Rick all episode and then pushed Rick into a group of Walkers here we see Rick killing two of the cannibals at Terminus in the season 5 premiere and finally we see Rick's most brutal kill where he bit out the throat of the leader of a group called The claimers in the season 4 finale in season 4 we saw the group get separated following the attack on the prison by the Governor Rick Carl and Michonne are ambushed by the claimers a group that Daryl had fallen in with after l Beth the claimers were going to kill Rick Michonne Daryl and Carl but only after taking advantage of Carl and Michonne and making Rick watch Joe says what the hell you going to do now Sport and Rick responded by taking a big old bite of his throat hands down one of the most badass Rick Grimes moments of the entire series a moment that has stuck with Rick all of these years kill someone with my teeth like they do in the next round of flashbacks we see Rick killing wife beer Peter in the season 5 finale and then the scene from the season 3 midseason finale where Michonne blinds the governor with a piece of broken glass from the fish tanks of Walker heads that he kept at [Music] Woodberry next we see Rick in the season 7 premiere jumping from the top of this RV onto this hanging Walker this was during Rick's test with Negan to prove that he's a Survivor and a worthy servant of Negan after having been defiant following Rick's killing of Abraham and Glenn not today not tomorrow but I'm going to kill you here on the ground Michonne finds a stuffed bunny just like the stuffed bunny we saw in Gracie's Crib in season 8 episode 2 Gracie being aon's adopted daughter who was taken from a savior Outpost during the survivors war with Negan this was a really nice touch because Gracie was a Child Survivor of wartime a child who once belonged to the people on one side of the War and who was then taken in by the other side this is of course foreshadowing the crm's plan to evacuate a percentage of children from the city before destroying it giving the children these bunnies as Comfort items we then see a flashback to season 3 where Michonne and Carl are looking at this cat statue that she grabbed while Scavenging for supplies I just couldn't leave this behind this is too damn gorgeous in season 7 of The Walking Dead we see Rick replace Michonne's cat statue that was lost in the fall of the prison with this wired cat sculpture made by Jadis that he found at the trash camp and sure enough it was a wired cat sculpture in this episode that was housing the secret dossier on Alexandria in the next clip we see a snippet from from season 6 episode 9 when Carl is shot in the eye and Rick is running with him in his arms as Michonne cuts down the walkers in front of him and the next clip is Michonne in season 9 episode 14 scars when she's forced to kill these feral children to protect Judith earlier this season we had a reference to that episode when Rick asked Michonne about the X scar on her back we also see shots of Michonne with Judith and RJ and we see a shot from season 8 episode 9 when she and Rick buried Carl all of these shots are scenes with Michonne and her children back with Rick we see flashbacks to more key scenes from the original series here we see Rick in season 6 episode 12 when he and the group preemptively attacked a savior's Outpost in exchange for trade with the hilltop we also see Rick killing the leader of terminus with his red machete in Gabriel's Church that leader of course being Gareth we then get Michonne versus Merl in the woods from season 3 and Rick fighting wife Peter Peter in season 5 episode 15 and here we see Rick shooting Carol's Daughter Sophia after she was revealed to be one of the many walkers in the barn in the season 2 mid-season finale fun fact for you this was a shot that was later reused in season 10 episode 13 when Michonne had a dream about if she had never met Rick and was found by the saviors here we can see Rick falling on rebarb in his second to last episode The near fatal event that sent him down his path to joining the CRM here we see Rick seeing a CR M helicopter in season 8 episode 5 here Bill mentions test subjects and Labs up until recently we supplied test subjects for scientific experiments to CRM run Labs a reference to The Walking Dead the world Beyond and then Bill mentions taking away democracy a possible call back to this line from Rick in season 2 this isn't a democracy anymore here we can see a shot of Alexandria and here we see an oil Derek from what I believe is fear of The Walking Dead here we see Rick waking up in the hospital after having been sh shot and an aoma before the outbreak in the pilot episode of the original series this is Michonne when she first arrived at the prison in season 3 episode 6 with baby formula left behind by Maggie and Glenn when they were abducted by Merl this is when Michonne and Rick meet for the first time here we see a shot of King Ezekiel and then this is Daryl in season 5 episode 1 at Terminus here we can see Maggie in season 4 after the governor attack the prison and she was separated from Glenn and Beth and now on the road with Bob and Sasha and here's Negan and see seon 8 episode 15 of the original series we also get shots of Morgan and Eugene and here we can see Carol in season 6 episode 2 you can see a w on her forehead because she was in Disguise as a member of the Wolves a group that attacked Alexandria while Rick and the others were away and Carol stepped up and killed almost all of them here we see Rick Walking in the hospital hallway and the pilot and then we see a shot of Carl from season 4 episode 15 where he and Michonne are playing playing a game where they try to balance on the train tracks on their way to terminus here we can see Judith in the snow hugging Michonne in season 9 episode 16 after being saved by Negan and here we can see a shot of Carl's grave at Alexandria from season 8 episode 9 earlier this season Bill told Rick to look into his eyes so he would know what Rick was thinking let me ask you a question Grimes I don't expect you to answer and you don't have to I'm just going to ask it and look in your eyes and it's Rick's eyes that give away the fact that he's about to betray Beal swear on the [Music] sword no in this next round of flashbacks we see Rick killing these two guys in the bar from season 2 episode 8 Nebraska one of Rick's first human kills here we see Rick chopping off Hershel's leg in the season 3 premiere after herel was bit by a walker in the tunnels of the prison here we see Michonne putting her sword to the governor's throat in season 3 when he wouldn't let her leave Woodberry and then Rick slitting negan's throat in the season 8 finale with a piece of stain glass here Rick says we're the sword that gives life one life one Unstoppable life echoing this line from The Walking Dead series finale we together pieces of a hole that just keep going for what we gave each other one Unstoppable life I was happy to see in this scene that after Rick's time in the CRM and combat training he can finally fight I mean don't get me wrong he was always a badass but there's several fights in the original series where he gets his butt kicked here we see Rick give Michonne Bill's sword as a replacement to her Katana which was left behind with Nat in episode 2 to cover up the fact that Michonne was involved in the attack on the CRM helicopters when Rick pulls Walker bill out of the box we get this POV shot just like the shot from season 2 episode 10 18 miles out when Rick and Shane are taking Randall 18 miles away from the farm and setting him free Randall being the kid that Rick hsel and Glenn saved in season 2 episode 9 trigger finger after the encounter we talked about earlier from season 2 episode 8 Nebraska here Michonne says to Rick it breaks up quick a reference to her having been gassed earlier this season on her journey to find Rick here we see CRM officers turn Walkers echoing back to season 3 of The Walking Dead where we saw riot gear walkers at the prison earlier this season we saw Rick try to use a grenade in one of his many escaped attempts from the CRM and we pointed out at the time how Rick and grenades go way back to season 1 when he took this grenade off of a soldier in the original series pilot and he then used that grenade to escape the CDC after Dr Jenner attempted to not let them leave kind of like how the CRM wouldn't let anyone leave I had to keep hope alive didn't I there is no hope there never was it's time to accept things for what they are you cost your hand last time next time it's your life so getting to see Rick once again use a grenade in his quest to escape the CRM it was a nice touch I was also glad to see Thorne redeem herself and her her final moments by giving Rick her mask OK was right to Hope was wrong and guys I love the attention to detail here with Rick's hand nervously shaking as he returns home to see Judith for the first time in years and to meet his son for the first time we cut to this shot of Judith sitting on the steps of their Alexandria home and we can see Rick's signature cult python holstered on her side in season 9 episode 5 Rick's final episode we of course see him use his C python to shoot the dynamite and blow up the bridge and then at the end of that episode we get a six-year time Skip and that's where we first see Judith wielding her father's signature sidearm in season 9 episode 14 we get a flashback to when Michonne found Rick's pistol in the mud on the riverbed paralleling how Jadis found Rick on the riverbed in his final episode and look I loved getting to see Rick and Michonne reunite with their children but it would have been really nice to see some other characters show up as well but we'll get to that here in a little bit RJ is wearing Rick's sheriff's deputy hat which Rick wore in season 1 and part of season 2 before passing it down to Carl who wore it for the rest of the series until his final episode and then we of course saw Judith wearing that hat after the season 9 time Skip and I just think it's so sweet how all of Rick's children have worn this hat and now when Rick is meeting his son for the first time he's wearing the hat too reminding Rick of Carl and guys when RJ said I need you come back I believed me too and me too Rick Grimes is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction and I have waited years to see my man Return To The Walking Dead universe and this brings us to our theory on the return of The Walking Dead original series for a potential 12th season the ones who live was a spin-off from the original series similar to darl Dixon dead City Fear The Walking Dead and World Beyond but I think we could see these spin-off series combin into a single show where Rick Michonne Daryl Carroll Maggie Morgan Negan Gabriel and others reunite for a new era of Walking Dead stories but I'm not so sure that this series would necessarily be called The Walking Dead season 12 I just think it could be a season 12 in spirit a sequel to The Original Series featuring all the surviving fan favorites and what I would be most excited to see is Rick and negan's reunion Negan had a very impressive Redemption Arc after Rick left and characters like Maggie Daryl and Judith have surprisingly come to respect Negan so seeing these two reunite and interacting with one another after all the blood that was spilled during the war would be super interesting and maybe this new series could be the ones who lived so fingers crossed for a season two all right guys well those are all the Easter eggs we caught in the season finale of The Walking Dead the ones who live special shout out to AMC for sponsoring our coverage of this series if you're new
