so today we're going to be installing vinyl railing on the portrait we've been working on I'm using a TRX style from a company called poly rail so I'm gonna jump into it and I'm gonna show you exactly where I'm at so you guys might be wondering a couple things like one why's my dog sitting on the bench and another one is where do I start well I can't answer the dog question she's kind of a weirdo but to jump into the drawing what I like to do is I use a software called draft site that you can download for free online and I like to get an idea of what I'm gonna be building so here I put together my porch with the the deck that I built with the trim all the framing and the four by fours that extend through the through the decking the trex decking so to give you an idea it's a residential porch it's less than 30 inches high I left a three and a half inch gap here between the bottom rail and the tracks decking and that's just so you can push snow through the railing out of the box comes at 34 inches so I have that indicated here my handrail itself is guarding is this real section I'm gonna put it at a total height of 37 and a half inches and I'm gonna cut my posts at 40 inches for the cap so I'll leave about a two and a half inch gap 2.5 inch gap from the bottom of the cap to the railing and I know the cap itself will sit down a little bit - once you put it on top so I feel like that'll be a pretty decent spacing so what I'm gonna do first is I'm gonna cut this post in this post to my 40 inches that I have indicated and on the front side I'm gonna cut this one a little bit higher to account for the angle section of the railing so when I calculated it out at two point five nine inches all right forty-two inches it gives me about two point five nine inches from this point to the railing so somewhat consistent and I think that'll look pretty good so let's jump right into it and go cut our post alright guys so all I did here was I marked from the bottom of the deck to the top of each post 40 inches and then I just cut them too to height with a massage also is relatively quick and important note the manufacturer actually says that you only have to go about 24 inches from the top of the deck to the top of the post and the reason for that is because the higher you go with the post the more likely it is to warp because the 4x4 will warp I want a little bit more security you know stiffness to the sort of railing so I figured I'd take a chance so all I'm doing here is cutting the posts sleeves to the 40 inches that I had planned in my drawing pretty easy step the cuts go relatively slow but they will be covered by the skirt and the post cap you can see me struggle here a little bit set in the guide on my saw probably been quicker just to measure it but yeah not much to this to this step right here now that we have our post sleeves on on top for post anyway step one is complete make sure you put the skirts on so that when you start working on everything else once you screw it in you don't realize oh I got a you know take them off at that point and then redo everything all right what I wanted to show you guys here is I have my rail pretty much in place have it leveled clamped in and an important thing here is I spaced my first balusters on both sides the same distance from the post here so it's right around three three and the next step is to put some balusters in place so what we're gonna do they're gonna put these in without moving anything hopefully look at the phone well I'll show you what to do we'll put these balusters in place we'll push them in when I get two hands and we'll go at the top rail and we'll put that in and line it up exactly the same so we'll get the balusters level get the top rail in place so we know where it goes mark both the bottom and the top go cut it I think the manufacturer specified sixteenth either on either side to cut short so we'll do that and then we'll come put it in place all right so like I mentioned I put the balusters in set them in place put my top rail in I got a clamped on one side I'm gonna clamp it on the other if I need to I'm not sure top rail is level and then you go on to either of these balusters you can see that's level as well I'm pretty damn close so what we're gonna do is I already described the bottom Shrive there so I'll mark this side nice hot do the same on this side and that should give me equal distance from posted austere poster balusters everything should be level and once it's cut we'll go grab the brackets in will put in place quick note this railing does have a aluminum inside to it so it obviously has rigidity to the post but because I was cutting that metal I ended up switching to a an older blade just so I wouldn't destroy my new one I still just went slow and got a nice crisp cut so just something to keep in mind so you don't start chewing up here good wood blades okay so now what I did was I cut the rail and the bottom rail on the top rail to length and I used some of the 4x4 that I cut earlier and I set it to the height that I wanted from the bottom of the treks to the bottom of the rail I put the end caps on there supplied with the bottom rail for the decking I marked the center of the rail in the center of the post that way I could line the two up did both of those so now with everything leveled the right height that I want is centered on the post on both sides and these equal distance I should be able to go ahead and screw this in so I'm gonna go ahead and put these mounts right where they need to be on both sides and then I'm gonna go ahead and screw em in all right so I just installed the bottom rail I just pushed those mounts in used 2 4 screws into the 4x4 this way both sides and then I use one of the self-tapping screws that was supplied with the package to come in from this angle so I did that on both sides then this will go in it gets tapped and use a rubber mallet preferably with some white so that it doesn't know you know leave any kind of marks on the on the vinyl but right now I'm gonna put in all the balusters which I should be able to stop popping in here I have my top section right here then I'm gonna install sorry to put the end caps in cuz once you get it in and all the balusters in you're not gonna want to take it back out you're gonna want to screw it in so I should put the the bottom cap slickly they go on after so I should be able to just pop this in place I'm gonna do that now and then I'll show you after I screw it in alright guys top section is done I think it came out looking pretty good everything's nice and level I did break one little clip I was pounding this thing in so I have to get another one of those Soph to pick that up this week but I think tomorrow we'll start the the stair railing
