Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
I like this, but it's kind of disingenuous to say a procedurally generated map is larger than something that was laid out meticulously by game designers. It's like comparing apples to racecars.
I don't really understand some of these. How is PUBG as big as BOTW? The PUBG map feels way smaller.
Black Flag's map being almost double the size of AC Odyssey is blowing my mind. Is it just all the water on the Black Flag map that's skewing that in my mind? Cause there's a lot of water on AC:O too.... That just seems so weird to me. Odyssey still seems overwhelmingly large and vast to me, while i feel like i explored every nook and cranny of Black Flag.
All these years later and people still oversize the Burnout Paradise map by 10 times the size it actually is? Not to mention the map used in the video isn't even the final version but from an old beta build that had a larger map.
I feel like map size as a marketing point has died down in recent years.
Plus itβs hard to say is what these numbers really mean when so much of these maps are either dead space between regions or water. Like BOTW really is every square foot as advertised, most games arenβt.
Here is another thing that I am about to call bollocks in this video. Lord of the Rings Online. As someone who has played that game since beta for the past 13 years, there is no way LOTRO's map is 77,000km big.
Let's do the math! I know I can walk (not even on horseback) from the Shire to Mordor in well under an hour. If I was being RIDICULOUSLY generous and assumed that is only a quarter of the distance from one side to the other, (It's not, it's more than halfway the distance across a side), then that would mean I would have to be walking 69 km/hour, and assuming it's a straight path through the mountains and all the deadly wilderness. So there is no way that the map is that big.
I know J.R.R. Tolkien's version of Middle Earth may be that big, but in the MMO's version? It is so scaled down that it is impossible for the map to be this big.
Here's someone who calculated the actual size of the map, and it comes down closer to 250 km2, not 300 times bigger than that. https://www.reddit.com/r/lotro/comments/60j1ul/been_trying_to_calculate_the_area_of_the_map/
Lmao this video is full of shit
Bethesda game maps are usually the same size, roughly 2x2 square miles. The only reason Skyrim felt bigger was because of the large amounts of verticality.
Pubgs Erengal isn't 64sqr km what do you know how miserably slow that would make the game
Red Dead Redemptions map isnt 41km. It takes 10mn to ride to the furthest points on the map in horses that go pretty slow. Other users have estimated it is roughly 30km, tops.
Some random typos here and there, but generally a nice comfy video.
examples: Assassin's Creed "Originis". No [m]an's Sky (missed caps)
Elite Dangerous is undoubtable the largest game world yet.
0.011349% of the galaxy has been discovered on EDSM, it will take 38,502 years, 0 months, 11 days to discover it entirely.
